Hotels Near Darwin Martin House, Buffalo
The Darwin Martin House is a historic residential complex located in the city of Buffalo, New York. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the complex consists of six interconnected buildings that were built between 1903 and 1905. The complex was commissioned by Darwin D. Martin, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist who was a close friend and patron of Wright.
The complex is considered one of Wright's most important works and is a prime example of his Prairie School style of architecture. The buildings are characterized by their low, horizontal lines, overhanging eaves, and use of natural materials such as brick, stone, and wood. The complex also features a number of innovative design elements, such as a central courtyard, a pergola, and a long, covered walkway that connects the various buildings.
The main house is a two-story structure that features a large living room, dining room, and library on the first floor, and several bedrooms and bathrooms on the second floor. The house also includes a number of unique features, such as a built-in desk and bookcase in the living room, and a cantilevered balcony that overlooks the courtyard.
The complex also includes a carriage house, a conservatory, a gardener's cottage, and a large pergola that connects the main house to the carriage house. The pergola features a series of skylights that allow natural light to filter into the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.
Today, the Darwin Martin House is open to the public and serves as a museum and cultural center. Visitors can take guided tours of the complex and learn about the history and design of this iconic piece of American architecture.
