Everything and more — atmospheric, welcoming attentive team and excellent foods with a twist. Definitely worth the 1 hour drive and look forward to our next return.

We went to the Wensleydale Heifer for my husbands birthday a few days ago what what a meal. The staff were fantastic with our two boys and food and service was excellent food was out of this world. What a great place.

I booked lunch here to treat my hubby for his birthday. Upon arrival the table had a helium balloon, birthday card and chocolates waiting for him. All of the staff were great so friendly and helpful, even our dog was given water and treats. The meals were absolutely fantastic, some of the best seafood I have had in years. Huge king prawns for starter, my hubby had half a lobster which was done beautifully and omg I had the controversial dish with king prawns, scallops, lobster, maple belly pork salad and croutons fan flipping tastic. We will be back when I'm in the area again and highly recommend.

We have just returned home after a fabulous 2 night stay 😍😍We stayed in the Champagne room and it didn't disappoint. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. The food was on another level,. We didn't go mad on the first night but did indulged on night 2. We shared an Oyster starter before tucking into the Lobster Thermidor Surf and Turf, accompanied with a nice bottle of Bubbles 🍾, We finished with the cheese board and port. Make sure you wear something stretchy for the expanding waistline 🤣🤣We retired to the small bar area where we met up with some fellow guests. Kieron is fairly new to the team but has an excellent knowledge of drinks and kept us all entertained. During the day we planned a walk which took in the waterfalls and stepping stones before we meandered up hill and back across to West Witton. The scenery is stunning and we were blessed with great weather. We will definitely be going back, everyone makes you feel so welcome.

Had a fabulous 50th birthday surprise at The Heifer. Gorgeous food, amazing room, customer service was the best ever. Beautiful scenery, even the sun had its hat on. Met some lovely guests to share a drink with, introducing me to the best cocktails 🍹 Got the biggest surprise when the milkshake maker 🐮 mooed 🤣. Thank you so much Wensleydale Heifer — we will definitely be back.

Gorgeous food very friendly staff.

So if you want cheap then this is not the place to go. If you want to treat yourself and experience cooking and ingredients at a very high level then I cannot recommend it enough. The food and the service is superb. I could fault nothing at all. Save room for very impressive deserts as well!

The Heifer was the venue for my niece’s wedding. The whole event was fantastic. The food was absolutely outstanding. The Heifer champagne we were served was superb. The staff were fantastic. So efficient and so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The service was perfect. They were also friendly and warm. They are an asset to the Heifer. The staff cleaning the rooms were also great so helpful and friendly.

Just home from an amazing gourmet experience! Everything was perfect, amazing friendly staff, stayed in the chocolate room — fab! Kitchen tour, followed by a lovely lunch, afternoon wine tasting was fabulous, then evening meal — best food I’ve ever had and a lovely breakfast to finish it all off. What a lovely welcome from staff which was recommended by our friends who had visited before. The choice of menu was very good and would suggest it would meet everyone's needs. The staff who served us were very friendly, approachable and exceptionally professional. Now, to the food… wow, it's been a long time since we have had every course to the exact same standard, and that was probably the best restaurant meal we have had in a long time. Thank you, we will be back.

I have been looking forward to eating at the Wensleydale Heifer for years (as we stay in Askrigg regularly) and we visited on Thursday… l wasn’t disappointed! From the friendly welcome by the lovely staff to the superb food it was a wonderful experience! I had the Smoked Mackerel Pate followed by Seabass, the presentation and taste were perfect! I just wish l had room for dessert. Maybe next time ha ha ha!

This is a Hotel with seafood restaurant but they do other food as well. Great menu and good service, staff friendly and helpful. It is spotlessly clean, tidy and comfortable. I have attached 2 pics that are on front of the toilet doors.

Had my 50th Birthday here. Staff were lovely and managed to cope with 9 of us with no fuss. Gorgeous food.

My daughter took her husband and my wife and I yesterday for a belated Fathers Day treat, and what a treat it turned out to be. It was the Chateaubriand deal off Travelzoo, so we were thinking a downsized version. That was a big mistake, us two fathers decided to order a seafood sharing platter. It was a lovely assortment and all four of us shared it. The battered Calamari was the best I’d eaten. Then when the main event was brought in we were amazed to see two fine pieces of fillet steak. We all had four thick slices of beautifully cooked beef. It turned out to be quite a struggle to do it justice. All the staff that attended us were very friendly and provided excellent service. My only gripe is with the drinks. All these type of establishments hardly ever cater for beer drinkers. I enjoy a basic bitter beer, not fancy craft ales or continental lagers at £4.50 & £5.50 Pint. However, I would not hesitate in returning and highly recommend it.

Surprise Anniversary TreatMy husband booked in the restaurant for our anniversary dinner. It was made extra special by the red rose, balloon and card. Thank you. The meal was perfect in every way. A tempting menu. Beautifully served. Taste wonderful. We enjoyed main courses of nidderdale lamb and hake. Followed by desserts and coffee. The staff were attentive and friendly. What more could you want. Perfect.

To be honest this is more than five stars. The food was second to none, the service was brilliant and the surroundings were just what you want for a cosy meal out. Only one problem! I couldn't manage a pudding so going to have to go back tonight and try again as they looked like works of fine art.

To celebrate my birthday (don't ask.! ) we wanted something a bit special. The Wensleydale Heifer did not disappoint. We stopped in over a mid-week lunchtime, albeit out of season, and were warmly welcomed. Once we had given 'a cursory' we inquired whether we could be fitted in that evening. The lunchtime staff were very accommodating and with a little rearranging, fitted us in. Spoilt for choice with the evening menu and although the place was quietly buzzing, the staff took time to genuinely check that things were OK. It certainly made an excellent holiday more memorable. Limited on-site parking was my only observation, so parking on the main road was the only option. I don't think that the hotel could do much about that though.

Really good first visit here. For us, it was all about the seafood. Lovely canapes to start us off, and I would recommend the seafood platter.

Recommended to us by a friend so when in the area myself and wife popped in for lunch. We were not disappointed. My wife had the seafood club sandwich and hasn’t stopped talking about it since, “best sandwich ever” she has been telling everyone. I had the burger, couldn’t fault it at all, the chunky chips are to die for. Will certainly be going back in the future and may even stay as the rooms looked fab. Beer and service was also of a high standard. Another reviewer mentions the service charge that was automatically added, it’s a tricky one, personally I don’t have a problem with this, if the service is up to standard (which it was), and if it wasn’t it’s your opportunity to give your feedback while asking them to remove it from the bill.

We traveled over 60 miles to this restaurant and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent and I had a steak which was one of the best I have ever had. Lovely place to stay with themed bed rooms, Whisky Room, James Bond Room, and more. Lots of quirky things about the place. Nice and clean and great service.

The Wensleydale Heifer is our escape from the world. From the moment you walk through the door, their magical mix of luxury, comfort, gourmet food and friendly attention weaves around you, shielding you from your worries and concerns. We have stayed in half a dozen of the rooms, all of which are tasteful, luxurious, supremely comfortable and (just a little bit) mad. The food is imaginative, creative and cooked to perfection. What makes the Heifer extra special, though, is the staff. Julie and her team are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all the food created by David and his chefs in the kitchen. Vince is Yorkshire's most knowledgable sommelier / bar manager. And Lewis has such a passion for the whole hotel that you can't help but be enthused about the tiny details which set it apart from similar establishments. When the stresses and strains of life get too much, retreat to the Heifer and let yourself be spoiled. It works wonders.

Cosy sofas round the log burner, had oysters to start, food was delicious, service impeccable, would definitely recommend.

After a recommendation from family who visit regularly, we came along for a little Christmas treat.
Our stay this weekend was perfect. Really comfortable room with lots of lovely additional touches.
All the staff were wonderful and very attentive.
As for the food, possibly the best we have ever eaten! Huge compliments to the chef’s as it was simply beautiful to look at and tasted amazing!

Many years ago this was a favourite Egon Ronay (that long ago) recommended restaurant so I was looking forward to lunching there again. We had a bad start when seated at a place with the constant annoyance of staff and customers squeezing past the back of my chair being compounded by the waitress calling us "you guys". I am a strong tipper on merit but opted out of the 10% service charge UP FRONT. This resulted in us being noticeably ignored. We felt invisible. I have had better service at Wetherspoons. The food was ok but not outstanding for a mid price range restaurant. It didn't warrant the insulting 50p tip I left.

Great food! We've actually booked to go back here twice and stay one of the nights. Highly recommend visiting this place if you enjoy good food.

The food in the restaurant was wonderful. The room was very warm. The bed and pillows were too soft for me.

Celebrated a belated 70th birthday for my husband with a lunchtime meal of chateaubriand. It was superb! Staff were lovely and all of the food delicious. Only downside was no disabled toilet facilities. I appreciate in such an old building this may not be practical but even a grab rail in one of the cubicles would make a big difference. That apart I can't wait for a re-visit to sample more of their wonderful menu. Thank you also WH for your surprise birthday balloon and chocs. Much appreciated.

Sensational Sunday lunch after a little wander around the village and surroundings. The food was beautifully presented and delicious — a feast for the senses. The only slight downside was the wait staff who seemed disorganised and there were delays with things like getting the bill. However, No need to rush on a Sunday — so this wasn’t a big deal.

Both the food and rooms are second to none. The lobster festival menu was a experience in its self, and really was the icing on the cake to a special weekend away.

The room itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable and appointed to a very high standard: which we enjoyed very much. The evening meal and service was excellent, and to be highly commended. Your staff at table are quite excellent, and the quality of the food service was impeccable. Of course the cooked breakfast was among the best we have ever been served or have served myself!
