Just got home after a pleasant two night stay at the May Garland inn. We were happy we was able to bring our Lurcher along with us! Who was happy to have some ear scratches from the bar staff. Very nice and clean room, bed was very comfy to sleep on! (we were surprised as we quite often have a poor night's sleep when we go away) Good stopping point for our day trip to Eastbourne. Staff were very polite and friendly, we had lunch on the second day which was also very good, service was quick and friendly. From calling up and booking the room to ordering a cider at the bar the night before we left we have been met with very friendly people, thank you.

Great value for money drinks are reasonably priced bar staff are very polite and welcoming hardly any traffic noise at all the manager is nice and polite and will help you as much as he can rooms kept clean and tidy and comfortable aswell the food is spot on deffonatly recomend this place everyone here is so friendly 5 star rating.

THE MANAGER SHOULD BE FIRED! Booked the event room. For a 30th birthday! Was buying drinks at the bar all night when the manager can in and shouted at my girlfriend saying he lost £30 in sales and that we would have to pay it. Making her cry! What a bully! Will be emailing them owners! He should be fired!

We stopped for a lunchtime bite to eat on the way home. Thoroughly enjoyed the Scampi and chips.

Amazing food by the new chef Adam, great bar staff, brilliant for live music, this place has come up in the world.

Great place to stay with easy access to Eastbourne. Room was well appointed. Excellent bar food available. Really food value!

Stayed here last weekend. Got a voucher for Christmas for a night stay and on arrival the pub inside is quite pretty, the outside is in desperate need of attention. The room was described as luxury in the book. But in reality it’s a tiny room with non matching curtains and bedding and smelly headboard. The floor was so dirty we kept shoes and socks on because we didn’t want to walk on it! Food was lovely and staff that we met were nice too. It’s a good place for food but I wouldn’t stay again or recommend the rooms.

This is a hidden jem. What a lovely place the Sunday roast was absolutely amazing, everything was so fresh & hot, plenty of food, lovely helpful staff Thank you.

Though small the room was clean and comfortable. My first impression on arrival was not good, the outdoor area & entrance is in much need of some TLC. The place was locked, which seemed odd given it was advertised as having on-suite accommodation. The breakfast only offered fried/grilled food — no cereals, fruit or continental breakfast. It did not give me any encouragement to sample the evening meals. Sorry will not be back.

Good pub grub and selection of ales, nice sitting out area at back despite being on a busy road. Place has character. Service was poor (ordered food but order was forgotten and place was far from busy). Maybe barmaid was having a bad day as everything else was fine.

Only stopped for a quick drink but will definately go back as menu looked fantastic x.

Nice cold Fosters. Tired old decor. Sad gardens and outdoor drinking area. Mediocre menu and this place still has inexperienced staff in people skills.

Went for World Cup game. 2 screens up, staff very busy & food looked nice (I didn't eat there). Just surprised at drinks prices (eg £5 for bottle of Old Mout Cider).

We were given a gift experience voucher, we chose the two night get away. We decided we would try Eastbourne so booked up with The May Garland Inn. According to their website it is a bed and breakfast facility but THIS IS NOT THE CASE. We arrived on Tuesday we were told they were not serving food therefore had to make our own breakfast arrangements. The room is dark and tiny, not remotely inviting. The duvet was king size stuffed inside a double duvet cover. There is no mirror in the bedroom therefore is very difficult to get ready. The bathroom is disgusting, the toilet seat stained with urine and mold in the shower, the shower head did not spray properly and temperature kept going from hot to cold. Some TV channels not working properly. The kettle did not work properly had a faulty connection. Had to keep moving it to get it to boil. At 5pm me and my partner were just having a little lay down before going out for dinner and the girl from behind the bar just lets herself into our room without knocking. Luckily we were decent but completely unprofessional. When we wanted to check out we couldn’t leave our key at reception as it was closed and would not be opened until 11am. We had to leave key inside our bedroom. Would I recommend this accommodation? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Just lacks character and the landlord struggled when trying to smile … Serves normal pub grub and the drinks are very English pub. Fine for a pint not much more. Left feeling that someone with passion could make so much more of the pub.

Lovely pub, lovely staff! Kids love the ‘treehouse’park which you can sit and enjoy your meal whilst watching them play safely! Will be revisiting again very soon!

Down at heel place with very poor service. Dismal function room and rude staff caused us to leave before ordering.

Popped in for a drink mid afternoon on a Tuesday so expected it to be quiet. We asked for the tonic not to be poured into the gin but it was anyway and had to ask for it to be replaced. Otherwise pleasant, felt like a real pub with little nooks. Toilets clean and serviced. Nice appearance from the outside. Well positioned on the road as a going home from a day out good and drink stop.

Great place. I love it. Regular live music from bands to open mics and jam sessions. Great selection of beers, wines and spirits and the food is great.

Had a nice breakfast which was a good size for the price. Couldn't finish it. Was very nice.

Visited 2 years ago when I was staying nearby on Holiday. Staff were lovely and friendly and it's a very relaxed atmosphere.

We stayed for a night in the week, I explained to the staff that we were travelling from Derbyshire and would be arriving quite late, and kept in touch with them throughout the journey there the sound of the noisey traffic from the main road kept my wife and I awake, staff seemed to be uninterested and grumpy, I the morning I was disappointed to find out that they did not serve breakfast, and further more directed me to a cafe down the road… absolutly diabolical for £66 broken sleep and no breakfast.

Food good but staff and cleanliness not so great!
Staff stood around chatting to each other, which they obviously thought was more important than tending to their customers! Chewing gum under chairs and table. We asked for a high chair for the little one, were given a dirty high chair (which we cleaned), dirty plates left on table long after we finished eating, eventually, as we were getting up to leave, we were asked if we wanted the desserts menu. Would not recommend and will not be eating there again!

The May Garland is such a wonderful place to visit. I'm based 45minutes away and I'm happy to go that distance as it is so difficult to find a family friendly pub, that supports live music and where the staff are friendly.
The drinks from soft to alcoholic, largers to ales, wines to spirits are all kept exceptionally well. The food is fantastic, there's a large variety of choice all freshly prepared in house and all the ingredients carefully chosen. That's not even mentioning the freshly made pizzas that are featured one night of the week.
Having visited and worked in many venues on a professional level, I'm always astounded by the fantastic facilities this place has to offer. It's very difficult to find a "pub" that is so well equipped for any music event be it inside or out.
There are regular "jam nights" that really are great fun and a regular "acoustic ambience" evening where you can enjoy a plethora of great, unsigned acts who showcase their skills. There are also quiz nights as well as regular screenings of sport events. Once again, they consider everyone and if only a small selection of people wish to watch a sport event, they've been known to screen it in their separate function room so as to not interfere with diners or the majority of others who may not be interested.
The May Garland has a main bar, a dedicated dining area, an outdoor seating area, a secure children's play area, a function room and ample parking.

2 members of staff were arguing, I believe they are/ were a couple… Very unprofessional. But then the blonde girl only looked about 16/17 so I suppose she could maybe get away with being so childish the boyfriend maybe about 21/22 was disgusting in the way he spoke to her and should have known better, more fool the landlord for employing them both… Food was dreadful waited ages for it and I wouldn't of fed it to my dog… Will we return definatly not, and will put this review everywhere as it was such a horrible experience and have never come across it in all my 52 years of life…

Very friendly and lovely family atmosphere, also a great Breakfast until 11.30am.

A warm friendly welcome on New years eve lunchtime, My elder brother and our friends enjoyed a well presented lunch Fish pie and Sussex smokey well received along with 2 Rib eye steaks done as we like them. If I am to make one small criticism it would be the chips! they would be more at home at McDonald's than a Restaurant!, Chunky ones would be more appealing and in keeping with the Steaks The House Merlot was a good choice of red wine by the barman. The staff polite and attentive, And not over crowded or rushed One final if you are over 6ft tall DUCK as it is as it was built! and it still is! it has low ceilings I am 6ft 1in and my brother 6ft 4in so be warned! But you will get a warm welcome! So enjoy.

As it has just changed hands the new family owners are fully refurbishing the May Garland. They have obtained planning permission to add 10 B&B rooms at the same time they are landscaping the gardens to be more attractive and family friendly enlarging the bar making a better entrance and enhancing the range of food and of beers and wines offered so the May Garland can resume its place as an important amenity and landmark in the community of Horam and East Sussex.
