Small, thin walls mean you hear everything. They turned off wall power so appliances didn’t work or charge. Given a smoking room and a tiny bed when booking a non smoking. Cheap for a reason.

A basic budget hotel, it's right on Birmingham New Street so handy to everywhere. Don't expect luxury or frills, in fact there's no double glazing so there's quite a lot of street noise. But there's everything needed for a city break on a budget. I enjoyed my stay here and I would definitely return, I had no issues with the staff or the cleanliness. Very good!

Yes there are faults — boiling hot in reception, run-down décor, round pin electric sockets, drunks shouting in the street outside. But it was also clean and tidy, the bed was comfortable, tea/coffee facilities in the room, powerful shower, and very helpful staff. Also excellent value for money considering this is the centre of Birmingham. I would book again.

Old rooms, dated and scruffy. Hard to flush toilet and shower only put out boiling water and cold tap wasn't working to mix water. Sheets stained. Extremely noisy all night had no sleep with the homeless outside shouting all night. Fire alarm went off at 4 an. Only good thing was the breakfast in the morning!

This hotel is definitely not three star. It also is very run down and old. The location is fantastic but my goodness not a recommendation. Staff were doing there jobs and were pleasant enough. A bar which isn't open so hpep you like vending machines.

The hotel looks very scary and with a look of burnout which don't inspired much confidence. Once I walked in the reception you could see some odd arrangements and a special scent that you might find at your grandmother house. The stairs are pretty confusing where it stops on one floor and start on another side on the next floor. One of the lift was broken and the other one got stuck with people in it. Not very promising. Once you find your room on the Labyrinth and corridors with a lot of mirror and odd painting, the room looked very pale and bed very old which you can feel the Spring. That just means they need to replace them. Shower was ok but the amount of limescale could have been removed and presented a bit nicer. The old fashion 3 pin plug should have been removed and I ended up to have one or two free plug where I can actually use. Breakfast was terrible. Coffee with no taste, pastry that taste like they left there for days… Not very impressed. It's ok for one or two night but eat out and have breakfast in somewhere else.

How the hell can this be called a hotel in the first place? I have regretted booking the hotel for two nights I should have rather slept in my car not worth paying two nights for £135 This is what I would call a student hostel and guys be warned it’s not a 3 star like it says online it’s one star in my opinion. I have slept in so many hotels all over the country as I travel around often with work and this is by far the worst experience I ever had. It was shocking straight from entry it felt like an oven boiling hot. And the astonishing noise you hear when you flush the toilet or have a bath it’s like the buildings about to cave in, the whole room just vibrates.

I cannot describe the nightmare experience I had on arrival at this hotel because it would take too long. Just say this is not an accessible hotel if you are a Wheelchair user at all & has the least helpful staff I have ever had this misfortune to come in contact with. Passive aggressive & confrontational, we ended up being stuck in a strange city with no hotel due to God awful physical access and the rudest manager on this planet, or possibly any planet in the universe.

Hotel in the Center of Birmingham. Very old and tired. Rooms could definitely do with an overhaul. Good breakfast. Booked two nights but only stayed one. Would not stay again.

Bad smell, dirty, can't use toilets in the bar area unless you have a room key card & told to go downstairs. To use disability loo you have to ask bar man for the key & when he is busy you have to wait your turn (wet floor). Manager we met has small man sindrom, we get more respect from the people who cleans our car at Sainsbury. After all of the shower blew of the wall leaving a 15mm pipe in the wall with a jet of water hitting the other wall of the bathroom, I was told I had the water on to high, (sorry I have no control over water pressure) no apologies made. Lift intercom do not work as we found out while stuck on the 6 floor, told reception, didn't bat an eye (must happen all the time) staff banging bins in the night. We would pay not to stay in such a poorly run and dirty old hotel run by young staff who don't care. (run away while you can)

What should you say in England is hotel moderate and the food bad.

I did not think that such a shabby hotel can still exist: foul smell from the reception to the rooms, I put a s to rooms because despite us, we visited 2. In the first one that was assigned to us, there were people lying down! It was very unpleasant for us as for the surprised people.
The carpet was worn up to the rope in the hallway leading to our first bedroom.
The second bedroom had no window! There is a heat not allowing to sleep.
The mounters are dirtier than the subway mouths: you have to step over the trash that is littering the ground.
The photos we had seen on the Internet had to be very old and did not look like the Hutch without a window that we were given as a room.
On 3 outlets available in the room, only one works. One of us had to go to the common areas to charge our second cell phone at the same time.
Wi-Fi does not work in rooms but only in public areas.
We fled the establishment as soon as we assumed the day was up.
3 stars, this joint joint has only the price: £94 per night.

I had the misfortune of spending 2 nights in this Hell Hole in February 2018. I even invited my daughter and her partner down for a night and booked a room for them. The rooms were dirty and smelly. The bath was covered in hairs. We also paid for breakfast. The Restaurant was freezing, the food wasn't much better. Cold and tasteless. Staff were arrogant and didn t seem to care about anything to do with the guests. I wouldn't let a dog stay in this hotel now. Take my advice and stay well clear of this dump. You would be better sleeping on the streets, they are probably cleaner.

Great location close to the train station and right in the center of Birmingham. We had room 204 which is spacious, restored and has an interior facing. The room 216 is small, with the bathtub and the taps a bit dated but for the price it's not bad at all.

Some of the rooms are alittle run down but renovations are underway. We stayed there for work. We found that if you ask they'll put you in a newly renovated room. Great staff.

Probably the worst two nights sleeps I've ever spent in a hotel. The walls are ridiculously thin, every time we turned on the tap, the pipes sounded like they were causing an earthquake, the other guests seem to think it's acceptable to run around the corridors in the wee hours of the morning, banging on walls and doors while screaming (two different cohorts). The first room we went to looked like it had blood stains on the ceiling of the bathroom, there was a leak, the advertised double bed was two single beds put together, no electricity sockets and it looked like a 1960s B&B. There was no Wi-Fi, and both rooms (we asked to switch rooms after the first room made us feel very unsafe) were incredibly tiny. The room they moved us into had no windows and was no bigger than a standard bathroom.

Very shabby. Room without a window. Very dirty. It's not worth €80 a night. The only good thing is the location, in the middle of the shopping area.

The one star is for the location, it is right in the center of the city, Unfortunately that is it’s only redeeming feature. The room was horrible, first thing we did was try to plug our phone chargers in and found that although there were 4 plug sockets only two worked and these had the TV and lamp plugged into them, my boyfriend then went to the bathroom and found the toilet was like that you would find in a primary school, it was tiny, especially for a 6ft guy. The handle for the window was falling off and the bar that stops the window being opened too wide had broken and whole window was loose, this is a huge safety risk as we were on the seventh floor, if either of us had tripped and fell into the window we would have gone straight through. Lastly the bed, by far the worst thing about the room, it looked lovely when we entered the room but soon discovered that what we thought was a double bed was actually a double bed frame with two single mattresses on it, this meant we Had to keep getting up in the night to push the mattresses back together or risk an arm or leg going down the gap in the middle of the bed, if I pay for a double room I expect a proper double bed with a double mattress. Other issues. Wi-Fi only available in public areas. Mirrors literally everywhere, I counted 6 full length mirrors in one hallway. Unhelpful staff. Dirty bath. Broken drawers.

The room was very clean and tidy, we always had towels changed, only had to take stairs every time because lift was taking very long. Good location. Also we got some refund because we're checking out few days earlier.

Great location near New Street station. Very British. Old House. WLAN does not work everywhere. Ice Cold in the breakfast room. Nice warm in the rooms.

Room seems clean and bathroom looks to have been recently refurbished. A colleague stayed on a different floor and their room was extremely dated, rusty with cigarette burns in the carpet etc. A window would be nice but a fan was provided. No phone in the room and no internet access unless in reception. Main issue — the walls appear to be paper thin & there’s a lot of noisy guests that to like to stay up late shouting & banging on doors! Room is near the lift which you can also hear.

Hotel a little run down but that has a certain charm, ideally located in the heart of the city center for shopping and some tourist walks. Given the price of the rooms (very advantageous), no reproach to be formulated.

The room was clean and the staff were very nice. Sunday did not work the elevator for the 2nd floor where we were given the room, which in the end moved us to the 4 floor.

This was actually a decent place to stay for the price and the facilities were also acceptable, however there are a few things that really let the place down. The hotel is pretty big and we weren't escorted to our room, we were left to locate it by ourselves. The mattress was rock solid, both me and my partner had problems sleeping. The final and worst thing was that every time you used the shower, sink or toilet there was this really loud sound that could only be a described as a large drill which meant every time you used the bathroom you not only interrupted anyone else in your room but the the rooms around you also. Location is perfect and this could be a great place to stay if they just showed more enthusiasm and gave the place a bit more tlc.

Didn't even want to give this hotel a star (had to for being able to post this)! Absolutely terrible! The manager on shift during our stay was VERY rude and doesn't how to give good customer service when a problem arose which ended up being down to them! didn't even apologize and blamed the issue on us! The supposedly hot food during breakfast was cold! The room walls look as dirty and gross as the outside of the hotel does! Not going back!

Cheap, and not particularly cheerful. For a city centre hotel in a prime location, the Brittania is pretty rough. The corridors stink and I don't think there's been a lick of paint in the place since the last time I was there 20 years ago. Credit where it's due, the bed linen seemed clean and the bed was OK, but I found a bit of crusty bread under the bed and a hair grip on the floor, so the room hadn't had a good clean in a while. There was a tiny balcony (bonus! ), with a decent view of New St, but the balcony had an old pizza box and a load of cigarette butts on it. Sort it out, this could be an amazing hotel. At the moment, it just isn't.

Leaves to be desired on many aspects. Wifi only in the lobby, furnishings and rooms of 50 years ago.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location and proximity to new street station and the bull ring. The room is dated and rusty — literally! The lifts take an eternity to come down, the heating doesn't work and we ended up falling ill after one night in the room. Fortunately, they gave us a portable heater on the second night. There was also no Wi-Fi in the rooms which was beyond the shocking to us. Overall I would not recommend this place unless you're only out for a bargain and great location.

At the time of Queen Victoria sure was a great hotel.

Typical British hotel by its decoration. It is located right in the city centre so convenient for sightseeing and shopping.

Good location; Everything else is not satisfactory: W-Lan does not work in the rooms, the toilet flushing was broken, the windows incredibly dirty, the key card did not work at first, a day came room service for inexplicable reason not at all, the Only outlet in the bathroom has a wobble contact, in the corridors hangs a very unpleasant smell, the breakfast was very poor: Between 8, 45 and 8.30 there was no coffee, tea no choice (only stale black tea) The rooms to the pedestrian zone are among others. Extremely noisy because of the easy-glazed windows. The whole hotel is very run down and would need to be renovated urgently.

We found that there were no windows in our room. No windows in the corridors. There was one small window in the back of the dinning area which made no differences to the natural lighting. The doors and skirting boards where painted black, which obviously made the hotel very dark. We would not recommend this hotel to our friends. We recommend redecorating in bright colours. And introducing natural light.

The room that I stayed in was very narrow and small for 2 people, the walls were thin and lots could be heard through them. The alarm went off in the night unexpectedly, which made it hard to fall back to sleep. The breakfast is overpriced and not of a good quality compared to other hotels. However the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was very nice, except for the rather small tub.

Possibly ideal if you like a sauna for a bedroom and people shouting and screeching and fire alarms going off whilst you attempt to sleep. For normal people, not even worth 1 star. Avoid this place like the plague. Our room had no window, no extractor fan, no air conditioning or even just a bog-standard fan to take out the heat and give some fresh air. Could the staff do anything about it despite being asked at least 4 times from 15.00 on the day of check in? No they could not, each staff member we asked said all they could do was to look for a fan and that other than that, their hands were tied as the hotel was full. I honestly don't even know if there are fans in the hotel or if this is their standard answer to get us to go away. We asked for a discount seeing as there was still no fan by 23.30, and we had been told we couldn't move rooms due to it being full, and were told we would have to wait until check out when a manager with some authority would be on. We checked to see if we could book a room online for the same night and we could. The staff seem to say anything just to try and make you go away. Overnight, to add to our sauna of a room, we could hear every single noise made in the corridor, from the lift beeping, to those quietly chatting as they made their way to their rooms, to those shouting and screeching and banging on walls and doors. Is their behaviour the hotel's fault? No.

Really like staying here. Close to all shops. Very safe place. And it has a bath. Huge bonus.

Fire alarm that went off that didn't help the situation but as it is right on the high street you will hear that. As well as the really annoying automated message from the high street bollards. The room and the hotel really need to pick if they are modern or classic. They kind of mix both and they don't come off well as a mix of poorly implemented modern assets in a classic architecture. Also old circular plugs mean you can't cannibalize the plug for your charger.

Friendly staff. Clean but very dated. Took a long time to be allowed in by the night security checking everyone had a legitimate reason to be there but I can understand why they do this. I don't think I would pay that price for a place to stay again unless is was 1 of my last options. Purely down to how dated it was.

Pretty cheap, but noisy until late. One night a fire alarm woke the entire hotel up without any explanation. The reception said it was a fire alarm test (in the middle of the night). I saw the fire alarm test notice on their desk and the date and time were not matching. The lifts are incredible slow and unpredictable — at some point I was pressing both up and down to call it because I realise sometimes it just ignores you. The pub is nice but the food is not traditional (fish and chips is actually fried fish from frozen — nothing special and you don't get peas as the menu says).

The room was very cheap, and so this is more a know what you're getting review than a negative one. For your forty quid, based on my experience, you will get a good firm mattress in a decent sized room in an old hotel building. Single glazing in the summer meant it was quite noisy from outside before midnight, and the cheap rooms meant it was quite noisy inside too with "revellers" returning slowly to their rooms, and a fire alarm going off at half past midnight may have been related to this, although it shut off quickly. The fixed shower wasn't tall enough for me at 6'4" but only required a little bending, and there was soap and a shampoo/shower gel pump provided. Breakfast would have been an additional £10 per head to be paid in the morning, and that seemed a bit much when £3 will get you a supermarket meal deal, so we went for the latter option and can't comment on the hotel breakfast. For £40 it was acceptable, but not a complete bargain. If the same rate can be had for couples sharing, that's pretty decent for city centre accommodation with a good mattress if you're not looking to be pampered on your stay but just for a room to sleep in after a day of doing things.

This hotel is in a very convient location situated on new street which is full of a range of bars and restaurants and is only a 5 minute walk from the Bullring. The hotel has a vintage 1940s/50s look to it and with very spacious bedroom for an affordable price. There is also an inexpensive bar and restaurant that offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. All the staff are very helpful and friendly, it was a very enjoyable get away.

The entrance to the hotel is not easy to find despite being in the middle and the hall does not bode well, very gloomy. The rooms have medium size and are quite clean. The windows are not airtight, it enters air from all sides. There is no Wi-Fi in the room but only in the lobby (for this very crowded). All in all for one night can go!

Words fail me on this experience, only thing missing here were guests were not in hand or ankle cuffs or in orange boiler suits, certain out of the way prisons would have better conditions and facilities for their inmates. The Hotel was filthy outside and inside, so outdated its unbelievable that it is allowed to be kept open what with all these Health and Safety and various other regulations that have to be adhered to in the year 2016 it amazes me that the place hasnt been bulldozed. Ignore the website and great adverts guys, rooms stink of old fags, leaking water in the bathroom, sun cracking the stones but rooms so dark you have to leave the lights on all day, open your window at night and all you hear is shouting and roaring from the streets below, shut your window and you can still hear it all, mind you inside the hotel was much the same doors banking all night stags and hens and various other fancy dresses in and out all night, no harm to them they just having a good time but no good if like me you fancied a good nights sleep. Got there after booking an evening dinner got told when checking in Restaurant closed no dinner, maybe just as well as attempting to eat breakfast I had to give in and leave it on my plate the food so cheap guess thats why they allow pets to stay in hopes that maybe they eat what the human species cannot.

The rooms looks so old and smelt of smoke. It felt more like a lodge than a hotel. It's right in the city but the smoke free makes it smelly for non smokers. Bed was rough, not worth it.

Disgusting prisons are cleaner than this place rotten carpets leaking taps HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA I wish I could describe the smell of the Hotel no room service when I asked they replied sorry mate not enough staff absolute DIVE should be shut down I paid for my room but after spending 1hour there is just left shocking how is this place open.

Could be so great, but it's falling to bits and every corner possible is being cut to try to keep the place running. Awful meat at breakfast, everything is the cheapest of the cheap. Worst of all, the place was not clean. It was an extremely depressing place to stay for 5 nights, full of stag do's and people that just wanted the cheapest place possible for a night. The fact that there needs to be a bouncer in the evenings tells it all. The younger staff were totally useless. I would love to be able to support an independent hotel but I would have to pick a chain over this place every time. None of the basics are done right. Needs a massive refurb, much more attention to maintenance and better cleaners and more of them. Loved the old fashioned style of the place but did not like the dirt and slapdash staff. Please also get Wi-Fi for the rooms.

As other reviewers have stated this hotel is very dated, however I did not find it to be unclean. I found the room to be comfortable and I quite liked the bar and the bar staff. The location is excellent, very close to everything. I found it a little noisy at night however.

The hotel is in the Center with all the benefits that entails. The price is fairly tight, and the staff is very good. However, there are certain aspects to improve the cleanliness of room and the noise. Despite this last is a highly recommended hotel.

Vile, cheap, dingy, dated and rude staff. Paid for breakfast but decided not to eat there. Low standard. If you want cheap and non cheerful this is 5*.

Outdated and un-clean. Room was like something from a cheap (-£10 per night) B&B. Will be sticking to Premier Inn etc next time. Shame as it has a lot of potential with its location.

This hotel is cheap to stay at but the quality matches the price. I was thown back to the 70's with the decor. Like mirrors? This place is full of them, too many in fact. I was slighty concered by the burn marks next to the majority of light bulbs in the restaurant. My friend did like the cutlery.
