Lovely staff and nice size room. Safe parking for £5 a night is reasonable. The big downside is no lift or porter for luggage. Bouncing a wheeled suitcase up 3 flights of stairs is no fun. Even some sort of luggage lift would be welcome. Would re-visit but request a down stairs roomthank you.

Well appointed, with a long history, one of oldest architectural landmarks in the town, very olde world ambience… highly recommended, and a great vantage point from which to explore the centre of Shrewsbury. Very friendly and efficient staff and super comfortable rooms.

Stayed one night dudnt expect such a big room. Could not fault the hotel snd the bar man was great.

Didn’t stay but got a parking ticket for parking there for 11 minutes while we had a very quick visit with someone staying there. Traffic in Shrewsbury due to Covid made it difficult to find somewhere near by I won’t be giving them my custom yes we should not have parked there but that’s just money grabbing.

Fantastic Location for visiting the medieval town of Shrewsbury the hotel has lots of parking space, it is dog friendly, and the service is absolutely 5 star there is a.
So a well stocked Bar.

Food is great and the atmosphere throughout the hotel is exactly how you'd imagine it.

Superb afternoon tea, great service, good atmosphere.

We went in for lunch but they were only serving sandwiches and a set festive lunch. We settled for sandwiches and they were beautifuly served with rocket and great tasting crisps. We also had the mulled wine which was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. The place is in need of bit of TLC but it's so full of character that you can see pass that and enjoy it. We will be back. Thank you.

Lovely hotel breakfast was good only fault was the lift was out of order & the stairs killed us.

What a Fantastic place to stay. Open fire in a beautiful venue. Warm, cozy and the room I stayed in was simply best value for money at £50 a night. Check out the Ball Room. Definitely worth a visit.

I hosted a charity event in aid of Cancer Research UK last night, staff were all amazing and continuously went the extra mile to ensure my event went smoothly, and that they were available to help if needed.

An amazing higglety higglety hotel lots of stairs and corridors in this ever so slightly tired old coaching inn.
Room was spotless (full marks to housekeeping) all the usual amenities but no air con which is to be expected in such a historic 500 year old building. Bathroom was more than acceptable and again spotless.
Great breakfast but luke warm baked beans on day two slightly let it down. My fault should have said something.
Great burger for an evening meal complete with chips and green salad (I've got a healthy appetite and it beat me.
Bar staff very welcoming and chatty telling me about the hotel ghosts.
The hotel us wonderful and the staff are brilliant.

Lovely couple of days away. Staff are really friendly and our room was amazing. Building was built in the 14 century so lots of beams and wonky floors.

Went for a rare and very valued date lunch with my wife, now spending my evening with my face in a toilet bowl. Did not taste good the second time.

Would like to thank everyone at the lion hotel for an outstanding venue for our most beautiful wedding. It was a truly magical day from start to finish. A massive thank you to our wedding coordinator Jessica with a first class service. Would definitely recommend this beautiful hotel for a wedding venue xx.

Went there for dinner. Poor menu. Food served not the same as described on the menu. Very disappointing.

Right in the middle of the town. Comfortable and clean rooms. Helpful staff and lovely breakfast.

Pre-booked afternoon tea for 9 people. I would never go again! Instead of having tiers we were served a tray of sandwiches, a tier of brownies and slimy cheap cheesecake and a tier of just raisin cheap scones that were dry and hard. I had to question how it would feed 9 people and how they justified us having to pay £84 for it. It was supposed to be a birthday treat but it was an absolute disappointment. There was 1 person on shift and 1 receptionist and majority of the time they couldn't be found. This service, food and cost is unacceptable from a 3 star hotel!

I was at the lion hotel for my daughter wedding the weekend Friday and Saturday there choice of venue being local new the position of the hotel could not have been better.
Building full of character in many ways.
Food excellent not just the wedding food excellent room package price for the wedding stop overs.
Staff very very good and helpful.
Car park is smallish but was not a problem for the party.
Finally the lady wedding organiser congratulations you did a job well and above thank you for your effort.

Old hotel on a hill in the centre of Shrewsbury's retail zone. Some good features n helpful staff but rooms can b a bit dated and spartan. Food v good.

16th centuary building with creaky floors, and lots of history. Felt like staying in a National Trust property. Furnishing in our room had seen better days, especially the curtains, but it was clean and the bed was super comfortable. A little TLC would go a long way. We had a travelzoo deal in a standard room. Both Evening meal and breakfast were lovely and staff helpful and attentive We returned home feeling happy and relaxed from our break.

A lovely hotel Central to the town that had great good served by really great staff. I've spent a few evenings dancing here on a superbly ornate dance floor upstairs.

A tastefully decorated hotel with soothing background music and lovely food. In a nice location. I enjoyed my stay and the room I was staying in was pleasant enough but was not very airy. There are special offers for stays at the hotel too with breakfast included. The hotel also has a choice of lunches and evening meals at a reasonable price.

Wouldn't recommend. Bar ran out of beer and bar staff were not great. Place seemed fairly shabby. I am sure it was nice once but it just felt like it was on its last legs. Food was OK but nothing more than that though I ate in the bar so I cannot comment on the restaurant. Our room faced the front and was quite noisy through the night. Rooms hot in summer too. It's a shame as the building has historic interest and had some beautiful features. Wouldn't visit again.

Do not visit in summer. No air-con, rooms were roasting hot (though Luke warm water at best in the shower in the morning helped this! ). Cannot open windows and expect a good nights sleep here as traffic noise and drunken revellers constantly using the car park as a walk through. Breakfast was table service with one person serving who seemed very annoyed at this fact, and a lot of the restaurant did notice. I waited 20min before I got up and left and grabbed a to go breakfast elsewhereOh, and doors aren’t sound proof (about 3 inch gap at the bottom of mine) so you can definitely hear your next door neighbour in a lot of the rooms. Lack of care about all these issues by the front desk, productive feedback was met with an ‘Oh’However location for town is fantastic.

Nice location in the high street. Close to the river and town. Went for afternoon tea, well presented. Bar man very professional and friendly. Enjoyed the experience.

A lovely hotel in old historical buildings, right in the centre of town. It offers comfortable tastefully decorated en-suite rooms. There is a bar and lounge area in the old part of the buildings with high ceilings, exposed period timberwork and lovely fireplaces. The Restaurant serves some fine dishes too and the breakfast was amazing. From the moment I entered the revolving front doors til the moment I left the staff were very friendly and courteous from Management to waitresses to housekeeping all greeted me with polite mannerisms. This place is a real gem. I will stay again.

A lovely stay in a very quaint hotel. Location was perfect. Room was clean and bathroom was lovely with a great shower and very hot water. All staff were very helpful. Would definately stay again.

Wouldn't recommend this place even for a drink — not unless you're out of breath halfway up the hill. Staff are non-existent and when they are they're half asleep. Drinks were very poor; asked for two different drinks from the bar menu, neither available. No wonder we were the only 2 in the bar.

Lovely stay beds very comfy. Lovely breakfast wish we could stay longer. We will return.

Evening dinner menu was good and the food cooked well. Bar service may be slow at times and maybe not all drinks shown on the menu are available. Good range of cask ale. Staff are friendly and courteous.

Lovely old world hotel. Lovely staff plenty of parking. Rooms are dated but cheap. Excellent location near shops reaustraunts bars and town centre. Good venue for conferences and couldn't fault the food. Will stay here again. Just remember you get what you pay for rooms are dated and worn but can't help but like the place.

I love this place! Oldy world expecting Miss Marple to appear at any moment. A perfect escape for a few days. Staff are friendly, welcoming and polite. Perfect!

Quaint bespoke and charming… staff pleasant and welcoming… food good quality well priced and well presented. ADAM food and beveragemanager a real character went out of his way to make our stay special.

An old coaching inn, and traditionally one of the best hotels in Shrewsbury. I have known it for around forty years. During that time, it has had several owners, mainly corporate. It is a large, fine old building, with many quirky rooms and staircases. Old furniture and pictures abound. It has a fine old ballroom designed by Adams, and still hosts many special events, including weddings. My wife and I recently enjoyed a short stay here. Well behaved dogs are welcome, which was a plus for us as well as several other guests. Garage parking is available to the rear. Food in the restaurant and bar was good, but not exceptional. Two real ales were offered in the front bar — but neither proved palatable. Not a problem as the service here, as throughout the hotel, was friendly and helpful and the acetic beer was readily exchanged for wine. I do hope that one day an owner will be willing to invest enough (probably a very large sum) to restore this splendid hotel's former glory; without spoiling it's immense charm.

The food was good but the decor is tired and old fashioned. Sofas in the lounge area looked pushed together awaiting an auction sale. We had to search for a barman and carry our own coffee to a coffee table after our meal. There was no fire in the fireplace and the room was cold and rather resembled a morgue. What a shame a nice meal was spoilt by a hotel desperately in need of a total refurb. Needless to say I won't be going again for quite some time.

Had a family boxing Day meal. Staff were fairly attentive but not particularly friendly. Perhaps the time of year was a factor. My cauliflower soup starter was very good but the gammon main course was canteen type quality and the dessert were tired. The décor is very traditional and clean is that is what you like. The price for drinks is over the top but I guess this is typical for a hotel. Based on food and service I'll not be coming back in a hurry.

Lovely warm and cosy hotel. A short walk to the centre of town. Haywards restaurant is excellent. We had a three course meal. The food was beautifully presented. Breakfast is very good. The staff are attentive but unobtrusive creating a relaxed atmosphere. The age of the hotel and slightly crooked floors etc add to the ambience.

Having Lived in Shrewsbury for many years then moving away, I had been to the Lion Hotel many times for drinks and occasions but never stayed over. I visited Shrewsbury to catch up with some friends and family and booked into the Lion as it has always been regarded as one of plush places to stay and decided to treat myself. The Lion is a Grade 1 listed building and rightly so, and I love the old worldly feel it offers. Some comments have stated that the place is dated, my opinion is then go premier inn. The place is dated because it’s a Grade 1 listed building and I had a great nights sleep in a lovely cozy room. The staff were attentive and the breakfast was perfect, just right! I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone and if I had any bad comment to make it would be that the room was to warm for me but hey ho I opened the window to keep the temperature ambient. Can’t please everyone!

I specifically said I had to have gluten free and they brought out the main with stuffing and sausage, that took a while to get in the first place as they dropped the plate and then they bring me ice cream with biscuits under it… I ate around it and said to them they could get another one, I felt like you know what just forget it… Lucky I didn't have a nut allergy, might be a death on their hands. Food very mediocre, your local carvery for half the price better food! Service was so so… Give this place a miss. Shame as I good venue, but no!

Came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon in November. It was quiet in the restaurant, the service was prompt and courteous, the food was lovely but could have been a tad warmer. In the lounge area the fire was lit and they were serving afternoon teas. It was a lovely visit.

We came here for a wedding, and left knowing we would never return. For starters we arrived and were informed that we are on floor 3. After lugging our suitcases up 3 rickety floors we were amazed to find that there is a lift that was literally outside our doors (we were never told there was a lift). We then went out as a big group to eat out and have some drinks to celebrate. When myself and 2 cousins returned and asked the night porter (Steve) if we could access the bar he told us "the bloke who runs the bar took them home" After a lot of back and forth we never got any further and then later found out the next day "he just didn't want to serve us" he never did show up to work the next day. The bed was incredibly comfortable but I was woken at 7:30am by the sound of the lift which physically shook the room. The other guests in different rooms told us similar stories also. For breakfast I asked for 2 poached eggs. I got 2 eyeballs rolling around on a plate, no toast, no pepper, nothing. Onto the wedding… After the ceremony we were greeted by a table with warm flat champagne that was obviously poured an hour or so before, and then after that I had to go and grab someone from the hotel to go behind the bar as it was empty for around 40 mins directly after the ceremony. After a few drinks the whole thing became more of a running joke then a problem. But can honestly say it was the worst service I have ever come across. So much so for me to write this review.

Had a lovely stay at the lion hotel in Shrewsbury very relaxeding place to stay breakfast exclent be back to say a gen lovely please for meal recommend 10 out 10 Mr & Mrs rowson the bedroom plenty of 119 room big bed fab stay.

Fantastic offer from Travelzoo. Incredible value for money. Cozy bed, good breakfast and excellent restaurant. Small car park fee was good as it costs to park everywhere in this lovely town. All members of staff were very friendly, maybe wine training needed as our bottle of red was opened at the table with the comment, 'let it breath for a minute and it'll be perfect'. I love the quaint history and atmosphere of this hotel which is disappearing from our shores.

Lovely building, Was put off by £5.90 for a pint of Cider and a small blackcurrent cordial.

Enjoyed the food and the service was good. The hotel is perhaps looking just a tiny bit tired now. It's an historic place. So it needs to keep its integrity, I'm aware of that. It just requires an injection of enthusiasm and passion. However; I think it is a good hotel on the whole. Bathroom facilities were spotless too.

I found lift was incredibly noisy tho not much can be done with that I suppose without major reconstruction of the building! Staff were very nice and helpful also polite. So that's nice… also it's prob missing a star as I didn't try the food and I am told it's very very good!

Very nice evening meal. Got a voucher for 3 courses and glass of prosecco for under £30 for 2 people from travelzoo.

Great deal with the offer we had. Main course was superb. You wouldn't expect it from just walking past. Popped into the tutor house before and after for cocktails excellent evening.

Had afternoon tea yesterday. There were 12 of us. We had pre-booked and advised 1 of us was vegan and 1 gluten free but nothing prepared for this Thus my 3 star rating. Service was good, lots of tea and coffee, lovely sandwiches and scones but really naff cupcakes and boring flapjack… just a bit disappointing for afternoon tea, we've had lovely cakes with fruit and cream elsewhere. But on the whole good for the price and would come again.

Lovely, helpful characterful staff but tired hotel rooms. Noisy, jaded and not clean enough.
We were in a suite and the noise from above at 0630 on a Sunday was unacceptable. EVERY noise could be heard and it sounded like a room full of staff getting up for work. The sound of someone having a wee right above you isn't great for a £115 room. Also no hairdryer, no biscuits and cheap nasty coffee in the room.
I did complain and received a generous discount. Fare enough but wont be going again.
The staff in the evening were very overworked. The barman had no glasses, was serving food, changing barrels and anything else-all on his own-not good.
The breakfast was ok-cereals etc-the full english was miserly-no buffet option here! Poor quality sausages and bacon and silly surplus's for salmon/scrambled eggs.

Stayed over Easter weekend loved every moment hotel was beautiful very clean, folded toilet paper, breakfast was flawless had choice of menu plus large buffet table with a wide range of pastries meats chesses fruits list endless worth every penny spent so we are returning next weekend just to have time out from our busy work lives highly recommend to everyone.

Fabulous location. Lovely traditional hotel. Beautiful building room nice and breakfast fabulous. Roaring fire and big sofas in the bar area and yes there are very creaky floor boards but we didn't hear anyone elses and they did not cause us a problem.

I have been coming to the Lion for a couple of years, eand on the whole the food was good. Except for last Saturday the dining room was empty when we walked in no staff to be seen. When the food did arrive it was poor. The fish and chips came out of the freezer the chips were on ration and the Rissotto tasted of nothing much. If I had more time I would of made a complaint. So its the thumbs down average service and average food.

It was shocking! The first shock was the 'deluxe' room that had 'supposedly' been newly refurbished. Deluxe my a**e! There was nothing distinguishable from a standard room and that room! The heating was on full blast. All night, and despite our attempts with all the windows wide open, it didnt touch the unbearable heat that was uncontrollable. The bed was noisy everytime you moved, noisy to the extent that it woke you up everytime! Then finally, we woke up to the ceiling leaking over the bed! and judging by the cracks in the ceiling, it was not a new leak! So yeah, not an enjoyable or pleasurable stay at all and I certainly wouldnt pay to stay there again! I would rather sleep on the street.
