One of the Best Sunday lunches I’ve ever had. Bold statement I know but it was, I’m a northerner and do find it difficult to get Yorkshire puddings and gravy right in most places, but they were both perfect. Pate for starter which was absolutely delicious. The lamb was soft in the middle and a little well-done just on the outside. Vegetables beautifully cooked and the roasties crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Service was warm, attentive, friendly and swift. Dog friendly both inside and out. Dogs even got some biccies too. Lovey stretch tent outside with quite a few tables and a decent field /hill view. Unspoilt What an amazing little gem this is — that is off the beaten track. So quiet and relaxed Highly recommend and I will certainly be back. Coming from a hospitality background I don’t give out recommendations for anything above an 8 or a 9/10. This is definitely a 10!

I've always had a brilliant experience at the Compasses. It was recommended to me by my neighbour when I moved to the area and I've been taking family and friends there ever since! The food is always delicious, with lots of interesting things on the menu (which changes constantly). The staff are incredibly polite, helpful and attentive — to a fault. And for when the sun is shining, there are large gardens both to the front and rear. Genuinely, this is my idea of the perfect pub!

The Compasses has to be one of the best places to eat and drink. I live in Devon but go there on my way up country and I wish it were nearer. So friendly and with DELICIOUS food. Go there if you can.

Gorgeous roast beef today in such a beautiful setting — thanks for that tip off on the Bakewell Tart, it was lovely! We were lucky our host for the weekend recommended lunch with you.

Beautiful old pub, original flagstone floor, oak beams, open fire and thatched roof. Amazing menu and wine list. Stylish rooms above and quaint cottage to rent right next door which will even allow very well behaved dogs.
We stayed in the cottage and will definitely be back, especially for the breakfast, divine.

What a wonderful and secluded place. Met here tonight for leaving drinks, so cosy. I didn't get to try the food, but will definitely be going back for that. Absolutely loved the atmosphere.

Plenty of charm. Limited menu with average flavours but pleasant setting and friendly service. Will return from time to time as we live nearby.

Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Food was excellent and the location was perfect. Rural enough for quiet and relaxation, and close enough to just about anything a traveler wants. Stayed 4 nights, much recommended.

I have been going to the Compasses for 40 years. It hasn't changed at all and remains completely authentic. The beer and food is and always has been wholesome and the staff always attentive. Trouble is it's miles from anywhere!

Lovely place. Been there for dinner. Super old looking in a good way. Food was good. With a good selection even though a bit pricey. But worth it every now and then.

Gorgeous setting. Absolutely adored the pub — coming from New Zealand the age of the place was a huge drawcard for me. We have NOTHING even close to that age. Plum Cottage was cosy and very comfortable even with Beast 2.0 arriving just after us.

Wow a little gem of a village pub deep in Wiltshire. Amazing food and staff. Much needed after a 6 mile walk through some stunning villages like Teffont Evias… just beautiful. We will be back for sure. Thank you for making us feel so welcome in your snug pub.

One of those pubs which still has the look and feel of being original and not a terrible branded pub which seem to be everywhere. Looks like original fittings. A good menu and definitely not a freeze and microwave job. Reasonable prices. Pubs like this make up for the desperate pubs I have visited in the local city. Staff are friendly and professional.

Kindly fitted us in even though they were full, and still managed a great meal with hardly any wait.

Lovely place. We had room 1. The room has some old features. It has 3 windows one at the front, one at the back, both of which have shutters. There is a small window at the side of the building that does not have shutter or curtains. The window is small so early sunshine is not a problem. We ate lunch and dinner the day we arrived and breakfast the next day. All the food was excellent and service had that perfect blend of friendliness and professionalism. Would definitely stay there again.

An absolutely superb Inn, quite possibly the best I've ever been to. The food was beautifully cooked and delicious as we sat opposite the open fire with a pint of proper ale. The rooms are astounding, extremely spacious yet homely and with beautiful wooden beams and shutters for the quirky windows. … The staff were all extremely friendly and wonderful, can not rate them highly enough. I could live there. Oh, and the bed was soft and delightfully comfortable and made a great nights sleep alongside the blissful silence and rural darkness outside.

It is rare to find a pub that captures all of the best things about dining out and makes them work together so professionally, effortlessly and informally.
The welcome is warm, service is highly attentive and professional whilst remaining very relaxed. The food is just exquisite and amazing value, although you could look at the prices and think otherwise, but the quality of ingredients and cooking make it more than worth it.
The staff were happy to go through the menu and check about gluten free ingredients and make any changes. It was unusual that both sauces we chose didn't have gluten anyway.
The bar is good. Well stocked and the wine list the same, and again, good value. There are local beers and ciders and the pub is lovely — nothing has been done to detract from its history. The furniture, fittings and furnishings compliment the history and look as if they've always been there. It's snug and cosy and there's a piano at the end which you can play, and it's pretty much in tune!

Great location on hill in the middle of the countryside. Menu looked interesting but were too late to try it out.

Good Ale, nice pub food, open fire, a good all rounder with an old tavern feel (mind your head! ). Seemed to be a lot of locals in there which is nice to see.
