Afternoon tea with Mam for a special big birthday. Forgot to let them know in advance we had a veggie in the party. Handled with absolutely no fuss at all. Food was delicious and staff attentive without being annoying. Thank you very much for helping us celebrate Mams special day.

We stayed on the 20 th Dec a group of ladies the night before my daughters wedding.
Stuart the porter could nt of been any nicer and helped with so much stuff ie 3 trolley full of dresses. We had food was lovely staff were really helpful. Rooms were stunning. We ran late on the morning we had to leave stuff behind which they kept safe till we returned.
Will be fetching my hubby for a night away very soon.
Thank you to staff at the marriot for helping to make my daughters day perfect xx.

An excellent traditional hotel with the sort of service that one would expect from a first class hotel.
Recently refurbished rooms are extremely comfortable, clean and quiet.
Proximity to the city centre means that numerous restaurants and bars are just a couple of minutes walk and the cathedral, castle and ‘Bailey’ colleges are just a further couple of minutes walk.
The staff on reception, in the restaurant and the bar are probably the most friendly and helpful I have come across in my many hotel stays on business and leisure.

Easy to find hotel with plenty of parking for guests. Comfortable and spacious room that quiet. Service was good over breakfast and at the bar in the evening. Good venue from which to explore Durham.

A fantastic hotel. Our dinner & breakfast were delicious with lots of options. Location within Durham is ideal. Room was spotless, spacious and they catered well for our 3 year old daughter. The staff are friendly and were always asking if they could help. The Sunderland fan barman was especially interesting to talk to & very professional! Highly recommended — we intend to visit again.

Great service and location. Clean rooms and good food. Car parking costs £7 a day for residents and you're a stone's throw from the Cathedral.

I have been to multiple Marriott hotels around the world and they all have a high standard of service. The Durham Marriott is no different. It is an older building which has charms and quirks but the staff are lovely and ever willing to help. I have found them kind and courteous. My room was large and well laid out as would be expected. The prices are higher than the Travelodge but the level of expectation of comfort and service is much higher. The staff show initiative problem resolution.

Very disappointed. I'm a Marriott regular. Last stay was met by room of 29C when outside night temperature was 14C. Ambivalent staff seem to think that's fine. A take it or leave it approach. Room was run down. A poor standard Marriott. It has a good location.

Went here for my birthday and I really had a great time. Very centrally based which is ideal for a night out in Durham. The hotel staff were very professional and welcomed us with a glass of Prosecco which we thought was a great touch. The restaurant and bar food was awesome. I would definitely return as Durham is the most classiest city in the North east and the hotel more than reflected that.

Lovely Hotel in a lovely city. It's very close to the fantastic Durham Cathedral. Spend as much time as you can in this wonderful area, it really is an experience not to be missed.

Arrived at check in and greeted with a lovely smile from the lady behind the desk. We were told we had been upgraded to a suite complimentary! This was a wonderful start to our stay and the room had lush view's over the Durham bridge and river. Room 233. There was a small Hall entrance after the door opened to a seating area with tea and coffee making facilities. Then this led to a beautiful soft bed… best nights sleep I've had in ages. The bathroom was lovely too with a Jacuzzi bath which was huge! The breakfast again was great choices from a cooked breakfast to fresh fruits and breads etc to choose from. Thanks again for a great stay and room upgrade ~

Excellent customer service and beautiful hotel. Check-in was probably best I've had! Upgraded to a nicer room with a massive tv. AC not the best on a hot day but evening and over night it was fine. Breakfast was nice but would have liked more options. Location is perfect for station and city centre.

Fantastic place to stay. Facilities are excellent , staff are wonderful; helpful and knowledgeable, food is excellent — breakfasts are a delight, a marvellous choice from cold to hot food, the cooked breakfast is not greasy/oily, evening meal choice is plentiful and good quality. We advised the hotel that one of the party is Gluten Free — staff went above and beyond to assist with dietary requirements. Hotel location Ideal.

Went in Easter Sunday for the night hotel was fab. Young girl in reception when we arrived was so lovely and genially happy to see us as was the young lad on reception when we checked x got two free drinks in the bar and 2 for the Starbucks in the morning we got an upgrade to a suite as we where celebrating my birthday. Room was really nice decor was lovely. Breakfast was lovely and the staff where very attentive to all the customers needs. Highly recommend this hotel which is in a great location. We definitely stay again.

Good hotel in great location between colleges and university. It has a swimming pool and spa overlooking the river. Not recent rooms but with bathroom with bidet, rare thing in England.

Staff are very friendly and helpful. The room is nice and spacious and you are able to do room service. Has a gym and swimming pool which is also good. Food is also nice from breakfast to tea. Would recommend it.

I came here on a business trip and was very impressed by everything. Hotel and room facilities were spot on, clean and comfortable. Most importantly the staff were amazing. I suffer with epilepsy and unfortunately collapsed at breakfast. My colleagues couldn't praise the hotel staff enough for their quick and professional responses. A fantastic team and lovely hotel.

Lovely stay at the mariott. The room I had was very spacious, with a large comfortable bed. The pillows were maybe a bit too soft for my liking. The staff was very pleasant which always makes a stay better. I've only used the gym facilities and they were small but adequate for a hotel. I would definitely recommend.

The room was spacious and very comfortable with the king size bed. They keep the old style in the room but very clean and tidy. Breakfast was good, but not many choices for vegetarian. Staffs were all friendly, especially during the breakfast. Very helpful!

Absolutely great venue for a Christmas Eve get together with family and friends. Good food, great service, parking no problem too.

Room was big, TV didn't work though. Unfortunately the hot tub in the spa was also not working and the sauna and steam room both smelt rather mouldy. Pool was nice though and staff were friendly.

Really nice hotel, the receptionist on check in and out was brilliant!. Durham is a lovely city but VERY hard work if you have a mobility problem.

Event was well hosted. Good quality food. Excellent venue.

Rooms need update and recover of furniture. Leather chair at desk was in poor state despite staying in an executive suite. Writing desk too was in need of refurbishment. Bathroom clean but poor attention by maintenance had left the panels looking like they had been glued back on by a class of school children. Bit disappointed really. Especially for the reputation and price. Breakfast and pools are superb.

The Durham Marriott is an up market hotel. There are parking facilities for those who intend to stay there and it is free, however you must pay for you parking and reclaim a refund at reception. If you are only visiting you must pay for your parking. In the hotel there is a Costa coffee shop for the use of residents and the public. It is a busy area and parking can be difficult.

Minor thing — The pool and jacuzzi were cold. Other than that it was a lovely stay at a great location. :)

Nice, Centrally located hotel. Top wlan, nice rooms, floors in hallways and rooms — the age of the house well-paid — quite uneven.

Popped in for breakfast with my wife where we were married 31 years ago. Staff and food were excellent. Oh the hotel is beautiful.

Lovely big room. Hotel was very busy but service remained very good. Shame parking for disabled people is not guaranteed or free.

Alright hotel. One would expect better for the price. Not great: my room was super-hot! Maybe because it was located above a swimming pool? No air-con. Breakfast not that great. Seemed all a bit stale / overcooked.

Set in a great area with good access by foot to the city centre and by car to the motorways. Lovely surroundings, great staff. All you could ask for really.

Stayed overnight at the Marriott hotel, Durham. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located close to the town. Only a few minutes walk. The rooms were quite dated and the bathroom shower area was a bit grubby with black mould on the silicone and grouting. This is normally expected, but it was a little worse than usual. Bed was comfortable and had a good night's sleep. Only other gripe was the cost of the breakfast, at £16 per person is very steep. However it was rather nice. Plenty of choice and fresh, even later on in the morning. Make it a tenner and I'd be willing to pay. Overall decent stay, rooms just need a refresh. I don't think the location can carry the hotel for much longer.

Have held several corporate events at this hotel and can't recommend them highly enough. The level of service and quality/choice of food is excellent at a very competitive rate. De and Josh have been our points of contact and any requests that I have were met with a can do attitude and dealt with swiftly. A venue steeped in local history which always adds to our events as we have a lot of national and international visitors. Well done Marriott Durham, always a pleasure.

We stayed at this hotel last night, it was one of the most special nights of my life, as me and my boyfriend Of 3 years got engaged. The room was beautiful and the food and drink were exceptional. But to top it all, the staff were amazing and went the extra mile to make our night even more special, including rose petals on our table at our evening meal aswell as many other things. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone and will definitely be returning!

Great location in the centre of Durham, less than 5 mins from the shops. Very clean and tidy rooms with comfortable bed. Staff all very friendly.

Very relaxed pleasant space. Great hot chocolate with a variety of hard chairs or relaxing sofas. Clean and efficient with free Wi-Fi. I will be back.

I loved it, stayed there for several nights, lovely bed, decadent shower and bathroom. Lovely old furniture, clean and spacious room. Wonderful staff and huge breakfast, didnt need to eat until sundown. There is an attached Starbucks, pubs close by and shops a short walk across the bridge. All in all a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

A very tired hotel in desperate need of updating. Beds uncomfortable Air conditioning dirty, noisy and ineffective holes in the walls dirty walls and carpets broken and collapsing furniture cobwebs on the fixtures! Not worth the cost the premier inn is cheaper, cleaner, newer, larger rooms and more comfortable Avoid.

Was there in December using one of the suites, fantastic service from everyone in the marriot especially Simon! Was there again on Thursday just to visit Starbucks and again great service from friendly staff.

Lovely hotel, staff incredibly helpful and friendly. Only negative was the room was cold. Everything else was brilliant.

Service was good, food was fairly nice. I had a rump steak with peppercorn sauce which was nice, though the sauce wasn't amazing. We were sat in a fairly cold dark part of the restaurant, when there was a nicer looking light part next to us which was empty. Service was good though and dessert was nice.

The elevator and the passageways are narrow so that when you arrive it might scare you a bit, but the breakfast is not only delicious but also of excellent quality and in addition the presence of Ellen in the dining room makes the experience in this hotel something great.

Christmas night out-food was average and it lacked atmosphere but staff were nice and the hotel seemed clean.

It was a good stay for 2 nights, though the breakfast wasn't that good.

I really cannot recommend this Hotel. I did not consider it good value for money. I was surprised by the quality of the 'deluxe' room and bathroom — ie lack of quality. The latter did not smell at all pleasant. The staff on reception were helpful but the staff in the restaurant were rather mixed in terms of their professionalism. The food in the restaurant was mediocre and we paid more for wine than we would in London. There was a good selection for breakfast, probably the best bit about our visit, but we did have to wait a while for a table. The location was also good. However I would not stay here again.

In the month of August I was in Durham on Business and stayed in a few different hotels in the area. The Marriott was one of the best for location and it does have spa facilities, but as for anything else they were trailing behind their competitors. There was no consistency in the way the staff on reception dealt with their guest. I don't know if this was due to personal issues or prejudicial issues but it is not acceptable for any hotel never mind an internationally renowned hotel. I had an issue with my slippers being removed from my room, I was later informed by the hotel manager the following day that they were in lost property and had been removed by the cleaner who I was told thought my room was vacant, although I had a suitcase and clothing in the room, items in cupboards yet it was only my slippers that went missing and it was only the cleaning staff that had access to lost property — very dubious. On my last stay at the hotel I was supposedly upgraded. I can confirm that rooms on the second floor appear to be more spacious than rooms on the first floor, but that’s all… the standard was poor. The room hadn't been checked prior to my stay and obviously hadn't been used for at least a few days as there was a cobweb from the bed pillow to the ceiling, the room needed a good clean, dirt marks on the bath, the toilet flush felt like it was going to come out of the wall, rusty bath plug, definitely not up to standard.

Awful old room with blistering paint, black lines of crud under the sink rim, furniture fell apart on moving for 4". Tried to have a shower to find the bath is raised off the floor making anybody over the height of 5ft 10" tall their head hit the ceiling. The bed was lumpy and old under quilt was smelly. The resturant was over priced simple fair in a fairly dull and badly kept area. Food I had was burnt and in one case my crab cakes both had crab shell, found out the food the sea food is not prepared on site and was shipped in. Do stay at Marriot on a regular basis but will be giving this one a wide birth in the furture. In house bickering in buplic places made the staff seem churlish.

Stayed there for about a week, and it was a very nice stay overall. The rooms are very comfortable. Although it was extremely hot indoors, the hotel provided fans which helped cool the air down in the evening. Overall the service was extremely good, in the bar, the restaurant and across the hotel. Staff appeared to be quite attentive to customer requests and access to the leisure club was both easy and free for guests. Only downside perhaps is the quality of the food at breakfast, which I found to be slightly under par: scrambled eggs were unappealing at best, bacon was quite oily. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a magnificent city.

Have stayed here twice on business. The experience depends on the room you get as they seem to be a wide range of sizes / shapes. Need to have more people working on reception — takes ages to check in or out. Nice breakfast, £16 is a bit steep.
