Most unfriendly pub in the lakes staff have a poor attitude and are quite frankly rude ive worked in the food industry for over 30 years the burger was sub standard for the price and raw in the middle wouldn't recommend if you happen upon it.

Never fails in the quality and consistency of their roast dinner, I took 2 friends to experience Blencathra and told them about the roast dinner and they were very impressed and it's one of the main reasons I hike this area is to visit the pub with it's friendly accommodating staff and the locals are welcoming to.

We've just had a family meal tonight 1st time here as were camping near by. It was very nice we had rib eye steak & 2 children's meals with desserts we couldn't fault. Would recommend.

We arrived a few hours ago so have not slept the night yet but the bunkhouse is everything you could need.
Wonderful friendly staff at the pub and we've just eaten the most delicious meal. The sweet potato fries are the best I've had anywhere else and the ribs are lovely.

Lovely place we came to the lakes on Friday and ended up eating here Friday, Saturday & Sunday, friendly staff, gorgeous food and my dog loved it.

Stayed here once with my husband and our two children; I didn’t expect a lot but I was wrong! The beds were comfortable, the pub staff were all amazing and the food was perfect! Booked again for NYE with the family… can’t wait!

Very clean and friendly place. The staff are very helpful. The kitchens are well supplied for cooking anything. Apart from this it has a beautiful setting in the hills. I would recommended and stay again.

Been here quite a lot but the last visit we encountered two stag parties who where drinking and doing what stag parties do. These guys were sick in the pub toilets and the next morning hanging out sick covered sheets. So so disappointed as this is a great place for walker to base. I emailed a complaint and got a generic one back saying they don't ask for party details as are they stag parties which I understand. But surely would discourage this kind of thing. It was so bad I got out of bed and left for home. It's a great place but be aware. I just hope it was a one off. I do think the response from the email could have been better. The food in the pub was great.

A no nonsense pub. Reasonable food reasonable prices. Went there 2 days on the trot when on holiday… will go back again!

Ok at best, food is pretty much akin to a weatherspoons, not really what we have come to expect when comapred to other pubs in the area. Without a doubt the poorest place we ate at in our week in the lakes, all that said it's perfectly acceptable, just nothing more than that.

Great beers and food, indoor and outdoor tables to suit all weather. Friendly staff and fast service.

Had a roast beef dinner and was not disappointed, absolutely beautiful. Kids mac n cheese went down a treat with our 7 year old and 9 year old devoured the curry. Most definitely recommend trying this place.

Called in for Sunday lunch on easter Sunday after climbing Blencathra had roast beef Sunday lunch and would rate it as one of the best today's I've ever eaten, will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

Traditional Lakeland pub in the hamlet of Scales by the A66 and Blencathra. Good honest pub grub with decent local ales. A cracking wee pub handy for nearby walks including the infamous scramble Sharp Edge. Bunkhouse accommodation too.

Lovely little pub with brilliant food in generous portions, three happy children and one happy pregnant woman.

Visiting family at a nearby caravan park. Had a lovely lunchtime meal. Very friendly staff. Food was lovely, will definitely return.

Perfect end to a Blencathra walk! Fire was on inside and welcomed muddy booted people (though worth wiping or rinsing dirt off using tap outside). Staff smiled on entering and behind the bar! Great selection of drinks on draught (at reasonable prices! ) and food generously portioned with traditional classics (noticed on customer's plates). Dog's welcomed too. Seven picnic tables outside lookimg out onto clough head and towards Meswick. Plenty of parking seconds from the pub entrance. Lots of indoor seating and privately spaced tables so you're not ontop of each other! Recommend for families, couples, dog walkers, singles! Please note: No contactless. Chip and pin only.

Love this place! Been driving past for years but only recently stopped in. Delicious food and lovely and cosy when the fire is on.

Was our base for a walking trip. We stayed in the bunk house at the back. Bunk house has a shared toilet/shower facilities as is the kitchen and dining area. All very clean and secure. Ate at the pub on 2 of the 3 nights we stayed. Food was lovely and good portions. Also took part in the weekly quiz which we failed miserably at. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Ample parking. If you are into walking it's a great base with a route to Sharp edge right at the back of the pub. Lovely old pub with open fire, would stay again.

An excellent place indeed with a great choice of food and ales, had the Cumberland sausages meal which was delicious and the salmon dish my wife had was superb indeed, however the prices are quite high to be fair when you consider that 6 miles away is Keswick and the same meals you can purchase for half the price, don’t get me wrong the place and setting is lovely indeed and we will return if the prices were lower.

Lovely warm welcome from the staff and lush food. Quite large amounts so be prepared to be quite full afterwards!

Food not great. Cumberland sausage 'bland' more like a bratwurst. Mash was powered mash potato. Gravy was tasteless. Home made burger had bun so hard could not be eaten. Should have complained but owner more interested in booking his own holiday rather than looking after his customers so did not think worth while.

Stayed here this week from Tuesday to Thursday… loved it, kitchen in bunkhouse very well equipped… stunning views, amazing food in the pub, fab quiz night on a Wednesday evening, ideal location to stay at to go and see everything or do everything you want… situated at the bottom of Blencathra. Only downside but NOT a negative would be to take your own fold up chairs for your room to sit in if you don't want to sit in communal kitchen all the time… bunks are quite low and not easy to sit on if you want to stay in your room for a bit… this will not stop us from coming again… but slightly uncomfortable if you have a bad back. Communal kitchen has two long tables and benches with seating right round (in the newer section), as previously said well equipped it has washer, dryer, tall fridge, pots, pans, oven, hob, plates, cutlery, bowls, microwave etc… lovely table/benches to sit at outside all along the bunkhouse to admire the view, available to hire quilts pillows and sheets (we took our own duvet covers and pillowcases) … lovely clean toilets and showers… fab that dogs are allowed as well… amazing prices when sharing and lovely staff in the pub which is 400yrs old and has a lovely atmosphere. Look forward to coming again soon.

Friendly staff and good food and views to die for.

It was extremely pleasant. My Gammon steak was succulent and flavorsome. And they can't screw up a diet coke so all round it gets 5*. I completely recommend this fine establishment.

Sunday lunch At £ 10.50 ish was expecting quite a good meal and to be fair it was not bad. Well presented with vegetables served separate, beef Yorkshire pud and gravy coming out on plate. Beef I think was either very slowly cooked or braised very moist and tender. Veg well cooked but not mush. 3 hand pull beers available at the bar.

Great food. Good selection of real ales friendly staff. Dog treats. Roaring fire. What more do you want from a country pub. Excellent.

Lovely welcome. Dog friendly pub even for our damp hounds who dried themselves in front of an open fire. Cosy and warm. We had super ploughman's big enough to share. And the dogs got a couple of treats!. Just what was needed after a walk in the rain.

I've stayed here a few times now. The bunkhouse is 1st class. Everything you need after a day walking and great price too. In the pub the food and ale is excellent. Plenty of specials to choose from and a good selection of real ales. I couldn't fault the service from the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Each person I spoke to was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this place.

Called in twice last week whilst on holiday 6 of us in total. food is superb, relaxed feeling, friendly staff. all our meals were 1st class my fav was the battered chicken fillet pieces with salad and sweet chilli dip and for main the giant yorkshire pudding filled with braised steak and vedg side of chips. Had it twice I couldnt finish it once, big portions. My better half is vedgie and was very pleased with her choices and enjoyed her food. Go eat enjoy Paul.

Happened upon this place by chance while driving past and decided to give it a try. It's lovely inside, very warm from the open fire, friendly staff, reasonably priced, great view out the windows, and probably the best steak dinner of my life. Will definitely be going back.

Friendly and relax atmosphere, great food! must try the battered chicken fillet, best chicken fillet ever.

Firstly, no where did this place state that there may be access issues. I found stairs to be steep, perilous and slippery I'm able bodied but I found them to be really unsafe. We weren't expecting a belgian chocolate on our pillows every night or anything of that ilk, we knew the accomodation was basic but it felt like the horses had only just been moved out to make room for us! The fridge was awful, really smelly and tiny to boot. The rooms were cold, no bedding provided. Toilet rolls were in short stock. Soap dispensers were empty and the toilets and basins were not cleaned. The management seriously need to go on a customer service course. Most of us would have been out of a job for speaking to reasonable customers like that. That said the beds were comfy and the showers were fairly nice. Won't stay here again. Won't recommend this place to anyone! Andrea B.

Fantastic pub and the bunkhouse is just great for stop overs. Stopped off after a sodden walk out today and grabbed a pint and bite to eat… some great ale on tap and food was lovely indeed… staying in the bunk at end of May.
