Had afternoon tea at The Great Northern Hotel on Friday — what a disappointment, the worse afternoon tea I have ever had. Arrived with my parents for a belated birthday treat, our booking wasn't on the system although it was in the diary, shown into the cafe for a coffee whilst things were made ready. We were shown into the restaurant (we were the only ones there). The presentation of the afternoon tea was as if it was hastily put on a plate — looked nothing like the afternoon tea images on the website. Nearly half of the items were missing and what was on the plate didn't look fresh and tasted dry. Dad had a mans' afternoon tea which should have included rarebit, pork pie, scotch egg, chutney, cheese scone and fruit cake. No pork pie, no rarebit, no chutney, no fruit cake. Instead Dad had a scotch egg that didn't look fresh and when the yolk fell out the white was rubbery and could be stretched apart. No pork pie or chutney but instead a bowl of apple sauce! We had no choice of plain or fruit scone and several of the cakes were missing although we had a quarter of a biscuit. The Manager listened to our complaint and tried to make amends by bringing Dad some pate. The pate was sliced but no toast or crackers to go with it, just pate. A bowl of chutney was brought out after we had finished the little that was edible. All in all greatly disappointed in the presentation, quality and freshness of the food.

Opposite Railway station. Safe, friendly and nice helpful staff. Rooms have everything you need and unlike chain hotels are not hermetically sealed up so not airless. Good fresh cooked breakfast. It’s not 5 star but perfectly good as a local base.

Stayed yesterday.
By far the worst hotel I’ve ever been too. From the minute we walked in staff said there wasn’t hot water, we either stay or cancel. Room was full of dust, not clean, windows wouldn’t even open fully open and it was red hot weather, bugs in the room. Fan wasn’t working, so we asked for a new one and we was told they haven’t got one and we have to deal with it because they cannot control the weather which is rude. Overall. 0 rating. Staff have no respect to there customers and service was terrible!

Amazing venue for our wedding. The staff were attentive and worked well with us to deliver our dream day. Thank you everyone at GNH and we will be in soon to have a drink with you all xxx.

Why does the receptionist ignore people who walk past them into the bar knowing that there is no body there to serve them. I shouldn’t need to come back out into reception to speak to them, I’d just walked past them. Awful, no customer service at all.

Went for afternoon tea very nice staff very friendly and couldn't be more helpful.

I only stop off on the way to Newcastle on the train but always a friendly atmosphere and live sport.

Very good experience and helpfulness of all staff during our overnight stay as coach drivers doing railway replacement service. And managed to get an early breakfast at 0730 even though it didn't start until 0800. But I explained on check in that we were doing a service run at 0820 the concierge at reception checked with the chef to see if possible for 0730 and rang me in my room to say he would do it. Excellent customer service…

Had a fantastic Mans afternoon tea and a superb gluten lactose free afternoon tea. Thoroughly enjoyed both of them especially the variety on the gluten lactose free tea where these was a variety of cakes unlike another establishment in Peterborough who give you a fruit kebab as the cakes side of the tea. Would highly recommend The Great Northern Hotel.

I stayed a couple of weeks ago. Had a problem with insects in the bed. Squashed 17 bugs on pillows, sheets and duvet in couple of hours. I complained at the time, and have written twice and still no response. Nice hotel, poor management in lack of response, bugs in beds unacceptable.

Walked in and police everywhere I felt intimidated left our drinks and left the hotel. Never again.

I highly recommend this place. We had our wedding there a year ago and they made it the most perfect day. We then went back for a meal there for our 1st wedding anniversary, the food was amazing and they made it so special. All the staff put themselves out to make our anniversary one to remember. Thank you to you all for your kindness. X.

This hotel is a little gem amongst the modern giants, is long established and in a perfect location for travellers. The doors are heavy, the floors creak and even has sash windows… and I think it’s great.
The service we received from Megan was outstanding, from beginning to end.

We had our wedding here on 22nd of September and I couldn’t recommend this beautiful hidden treasure enough, right from the moment we went to have a look around we where made to feel welcome, the wedding planner Lizzie went above and beyond to try and make our wishes become a reality! Tracey the events coordinator really was amazing she was on hand from the moment we arrived to the moment we left! All the staff where amazing and our wedding breakfast and evening meal was truly amazing everyone said how beautiful it was. So from the bottom of our heart I thank you all so much… from the newlyweds Mr and Mrs Bourne.

A lovely hotel near the city centre opposite the train station serving fantastic real ale.

Comfortable bar with outside seating available. Service wasn't swift and drinks a little pricey.

I stayed here on 14th July 2018. I found the staff to be very helpful, polite, knowledgeable, & friendly. My room was very spacious, clean, comfortable bed, & an adequate bathroom. Breakfast was delicious, I recommend the full English. One reservation I have is that there are no lifts, which makes it almost impossible for wheelchair bound guests to access the rooms which are only on the 1st & 2nd floors.

Good parking. Limited disabled accomodation. Reasonable conference facility.

Popped. For a quick meal between trains, only had an hour. Asked can you fit two courses in and get me back on train, they checked with kitchen and said yes. I was really glad they could as the food was amazing. I had the Ham Hock, Foie gras with pickles and quails eggs followed by the belly pork and scallops. I really think this is a well hidden little gem. It's under the noses of everyone, but overlooked. I may have to try the rooms next time!

Took my mum, who is a regular Sunday lunch dinner here on Mother’s Day for Sunday lunch, we both had the pork medallions for starters with pork cracking my pork cracklings was soft, as though it had been cooked and left for ages, I had the beef for mains, and it was so over cooked and tough, the Yorkshire pudding was stodgy and tough, mum had the chicken which was also far too over cooked and dry, we had booked the meal, so there was no need to pre cook everything so far in advance, I have dined at The Ritz and been to McDonald’s and most places in between.
When our waiter came up to us AFTER we finished and asked how everything was I gave an honest appraisal and was told, I’ll give your feedback to the chef which for the money the bill was, I’m sure a lot of families in the UK would do a weekly shop for, mum has had a couple of bad experiences here the service was slow, to be fair the drink waiter was very attentive and done his best but I would not recommend based upon my experience.

Highly recommend the Great Northern Hotel. We went for Mothers Day afternoon Tea & was very impressed. Good value for money & a lovely experience in good surroundings. The cakes were delicious.

Friendly staff, building could do with a good clean inside and out but overall good. Perfect stop of before getting on the train.

Not great access for disabled users or people with pushchairs. No lift and poor signage about doors & ramps suitable for wheelchairs. Main entrance not suited to people who cant walk up steps.

Decent room and decor in the hotel, nice food, although took a while to be served both evening meal and breakfast, evening meal especially was worth the wait, and very friendly bar staff. The shower in the room on the other hand was just rubbish, no pressure, running hot and cold and just not good enough. Great location to get the train.

Spent a day here on a training event. Great venue with on-site parking, large room with lots of windows that open (how I hate sitting in dungeon-like air conditioned training rooms! ). Great refreshments — nice coffee and a choice of caffeine free teas — and a lovely lunch that included good gluten free for me. Clean, pleasant decor. Wifi was OK. Overall a great venue. Update 19th December Sadly the venue has gone downhill. Here all day for another conference, parking was impossible (competing with Christmas shoppers) and food was uninspiring and dry. 3 stars.

We had a fantastic work function. Best surprise was the food. I wasn't expecting the finely and colourfully presented quality dishes. The staff were very attentive and organised. The main areas and bar have an old style charm. Thanks for the party. Can't comment on the rooms as haven't stayed before.

Very easy to find (directly opposite the station), but couldn't here any trains while there. Staff is very friendly and helpful, food was good, facilities are clean.

Stately Hotel located next to the Peterborough train station and a few meters from the shopping centre. Parking and large halls are also used for weddings and other celebrations.

Being right opposite the train station is ideal for me as I have regular office meetings there. Friendly and helpful staff. Although the room I've stayed was a little backdated but the facilities overall were reasonably in good order. Good service and the food was great!

Tired. Attended a meeting, receptionist didn't know which was being used. The room which we were using was very traditional in a 1980's way. However the drinks and meals were tasty and we'll presented.

Arrived mid way through a cold train trip. The lady serving my hot chocolate brought me my own personal radiator to warm up with. Very grateful! Thank you.

We had our wedding reception there last year and we're amazed by the experience. The staff were attentive and very friendly. The food was amazing. It really was a great day. We went back for our first annerversary, as guests of the hotel. Again the staff were incredible. I cannot recommend the hotel enough.

We held our wedding celebrations at GNH last year. We knew right from the wedding open evening that we wanted to celebrate there and it’s not let us down at all. They were great through the planning process, amazing on the day with both us and our friends and family, and we’re just back from complimentary dinner, bed and breakfast there, to mark our first anniversary, where we were treated to fabulous food, drink and hospitality. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at GNH and the calm atmosphere is such a lovely contrast to the busy vibe around it. Thanks for having us. See you again very soon. Sarah and Andrew.

Went to the cafe Had a great atmosphere, much nicer to be in than the pumpkin cafe across the road. Staff occasionally were not always around but otherwise polite and helpful.

Attended a wedding reception was very pleasant friendly staff and food was good but felt toilets let it down bin was overflowing with tissues looked as though hadn't been checked for a while.

We had our wedding here on the 17.06.17 and I cannot thank the team enough for their efforts and attention to detail. Compliments received by numerous people about the food being the best they had ever had at a wedding! They catered for everyone including those with dietary requirements and went above and beyond especially with our fussy daughter. The staff were phenomenal and I can't thank them enough, we will be returning when in the area and would recommend to anyone.

Two stars seems harsh since it's perfectly fine but I've stayed in four hotel in Peterborough and this is in the bottom two. One really hot days (not that it happens often) they do not have AC. Worst shower I've ever taken. Ages to get any heat and zero, I mean zero, water pressure. It was just dropping out. Would have gotten a better shower standing in the rain. Also I could hear the train station announcements through my window. Decent staff, but nothing special there either.

Old fashioned Hotel, like the style. Great Breakfast. Only negative point is you can't open the windows completely; would be great if it would be possible for "fresh air lovers" like me.

Attended for a private dining birthday celebration. All staff where attentive, professional and efficient. The food was very nice, and the portion sizes where generous. The room was clean, however it was very warm but when asked to have a window opened, this was done immediately.

Overall, very good. Food was great, the room was decorated to a very high standard, though it's an old building so the old-style windows wouldn't stay open when slid up. The staff were all very helpful and friendly.

Went there for a job interview. The lady who worked at the reception desk was very nice and helpful. The location is very convenient since it is right in the city centre and is very easy to get to in no time.

Well priced food but slightly pricy drinks, quick service so ideal as a stop in whilst waiting for a train.

Always a comfortable stay. Large rooms, always clean. Always enjoy the splendour of the old bathrooms on the 1st floor, the modern 2nd floor bathrooms aren't as glorious.

Running late for my train and with the station carpark full, the parking attendant squeezed me in to the hotel carpark. Upon my return to my car I arrived to see my driver side window covered by plastic sheeting. Naturally my heart sank having assumed my car had been broken into. It wasn't until getting into my car I realised the window was intact! In my rush to catch my train I had done the unthinkable and left my car window wide open! The parking attended not only sealed my window but placed cones around my car to ensure my car was not blocked in. I have never stayed in the hotel or bought a drink there, but if the parking attendants high standards are anything to go by I'm sure the rest of the staff and facilities are great!

From the outside in the middle of winter it doesn't look anything special, but inside is lovely and warm with a classic feel. Room was clean and nice and enjoyed the shower. Drinks a little expensive in the bar though.

Fantastic place to have a wedding we got married on Sat 29th Aug staff amazing repaired our broken wedding cake the whole weekend was perfect staff couldn't do enough for us food was amazing Zsofia wedding Co odinator was amazing chef and food amazing. Nice place and I'm from Lincoln. A well known Travel Scenic Photographer but usually allover Wilts/Dorset and ALL of Cornwall… nice Staff there… can't hardly 'fault it'… for those of us who know!

We spent 2 days/nights at the hotel. We were allocated a room which exceeded our expectations. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The chef, Mark, catered to all our needs and presented us with an excellent choice of menu. All freshly prepared. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Peterborough which has a lot to offer. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel The only drawback is that there is no lift. We stayed in the hotel from June 7th to June 9th 2014.

Having been caught up in today's travel chaos I was informed I could get a free drink and rest while alternative travel arrangements were made to get me home at your hotel. I entered the hotel noting the so called warm welcome to the public to use the bar or coffee lounge. I decided to use the toilet first and upon seeing a sign for said facilities. As I tried to enter I was accosted by and snooty little toad of a man who upon seeing me wearing a red baseball cap and hi vis vest over my normal jacket. Said little toad demanded to know who I was and why I was in the hotel. I informed him of my desire to get a drink and use the facilities then became very rude. Had my travel companion not intervened this would have become a very heated exchange. Oh and don't worry I didn't use your poxy toilets and got my coffee and left as soon as possible as I was obviously not welcome. But your sign should be altered as you do not welcome the public at all. I felt it was purely because I was not wearing a suit although clean shaven and smart in appearance. You should train your staff not to judge on appearance alone. Very poor show.

Over all the hotel was great and a good price. Its is 200 yards from the station and close to the town centre. The room was clean had a good size TV and modern design even if it was a very old building. The breckfast was freshly cook and very good. There was a little noise from the station until after the last train but this was hardly noticable, only if you are a very light sleeper. The hotel dose not have ant lift which was no a problem for us but might be for less able people. One one thing I did not like was the shower over bath was not very good but I did manage to have two showers.

I arrived in Peterborough by train to find this fabulous hotel right outside the station. I didn't have a reservation but was welcomed by the staff as though I was a friend. After enjoying a fabulous meal in the restaurant, I had a great night sleep in a gorgeous room. Service was excellent and this independent hotel was full of charm. Absolutely would stay there again. A little gem.
