The best oxtail soup in the city! Our family has been coming here for over 10yrs and it still taste so good, we definitely recommend their chicken fingers and steak for their midnight specials as well. It doesn’t matter if we come on the weekends where they are super packed or just a regular night all the staff we’ve had are friendly and accommodating.

I stayed here in August, 2017. Beautiful refurbished rooms with large comfy beds. Great location downtown. Outstanding staff, service, gaming, restaurants. Very reasonably priced in every aspect as are all Boyd Hotels. I go to Vegas often and always stay at a Boyd Hotel. Have for the last 17 years!

After gambling downtown some friends and I needed food. As any Hawaii visitor knows, you can't go wrong with the local kine grinds at the Market Street Cafe inside the Cal. I got the Loco moco and it had a good patty and gravy. Over easy eggs were just right too. Rice could've been better but that's me trying to nitpick. Cheap and filling, if you want a taste of the islands, this is the spot.

We ate at the Market Street Cafe because friends recommended it. I have to have gluten free food (and so does the friend who was with me) and hoped that the prime rib would be. However, I knew my friend and I were in trouble when I asked if the kitchen was aware of gluten free and I got a blank stare by the waitress. When I tried to pare it down to "does the kitchen have good practices for keeping wheat/bread away from the prime rib, " we were told "Oh yes, they make sandwiches way on the other side of the kitchen. " Needless to say, my friend and I gambled and lost. I should have known better, and after several days of miserable stomachs, my friend and I have gone back to reiterating that we can't just hope that the kitchen knows gluten free, even in Las Vegas. However, if you don't need to eat gluten free, and if you love an 80's diner lounge vibe (including drifting cigarette smoke), and if you like a great deal with tolerable food, this place will probably be perfect for you.

Great location. Clean rooms. Bed was extremely comfortable. Every single staff member we spoke with was amazing. Machines were stingy but they did have the old timey coin machines, so that was pretty neat. We will probably stay here again on our next Vegas Vacation!

This is my first visit to the California. I'm here with my partner's family who all love the Boyd properties. I have had a pleasant time. I cannot think of a thing to complain about. The beds are comfortable and the rooms clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. I've gotten to know many of the bartenders and staff well, and I have truly enjoyed the personal connections I have made with them. The public bus also stops right outside of the hotel, and Fremont Street is only a block away. There's a lot to do near by!

I visited the hotel as a tourist to caress the belly of the Buddah.

I like the Cal. It's not extravagant, but has everything I want in Vegas, great table games, great slots and decent rooms after this latest remodel. My only issue is with the sports book staff and cashier's. If you don't know exactly what terms to say, they give you nothing but grief. Crusty Jim at sports needs to be replaced with a machine. They don't eye roll and say Jesus after placing 4 small 20 dollar bets. Then beware of Lisa's scorn if you don't say "take out a marker" instead of some other similar terms. Despite these areas I will be back to enjoy the wonderful table dealers, cocktail servers and aloha specialties food upstairs.

The five star rating is for the Cal Coffee Shop open 24 hours. Awesome Hawaiian home style food. Oxtail Stew, Oxtail Soup on Friday night after 11:30 and Saimin noodles all the time. Price is very affordable, each entree large. Their Prime Rib dinner was tasty, tender and very nice portion. I asked for 'rare' which you never every get but pretty pink so I was pleased.

I just went to eat at the house of noodles, I got a good soup.

5 nights spent here, very nice, clean large rooms. The bathroom was a bit small but modern. Very comfortable beds and despite being close to Fremont Street halfway quiet. Very nice casino and extremely friendly staff — I would definitely book the California again.

We love staying at the California. The amenities are great and service is wonderful. The casino is newly renovated, is spacious and there is a game for everyone. Their B-connect program provides fantastic room, food and casino incentives. They offer a shuttle service to other properties as well as to the outlet mall. The Fremot experience is just a block away.

Great room. However, due to the proximity to the Fremontstreet something very noisy. Comfortable beds.

I came here for dinner at their Hawaiian inspired restaurant (can't recall the name) and it was excellent. The oxtail soup was amazing! Very diverse menu. Staff was friendly albeit a little uneducated on menu items. They still went above and beyond to answer any questions. I would def. Recommend this place to a friend.

I love visiting the California Hotel. It always feels safe and comforting. The staff is helpful and happy. They really know how to go above and beyond to treat each guest as ohana without making you feel like a"customer. " Great food and amenities. Love the vibe here! Always cheerful and positive. The rooms are updated, clean, and comfortable. Hot showers, huge TV, and big, clean comfy beds! ☺️ I will be back several times per year as always.

Friendly staff. Clean room. They gave me a non-smoking room, but it still had hints of cigarettes. In-room safe and refrigerator worked great. Soap, shampoo, conditioner and moisturizer in the bathroom. Toilet is squeezed next to shower. Very cramp. Wouldn't keep towels on shower door handle because the pressure assisted toilet creates a lot of spray. Didn't replace plastic bag for ice bucket. Didn't tuck in the bedsheet under the mattress on one side the bed. Close to Fremont Experience. Can be a little noisy. Mob Museum is 2 to 3 blocks away. Free parking. No resort fees. Connected to Main Street Casino and Hotel via enclosed bridge.

This was our first time staying off the strip in Vegas but we planned our trip during CES so everything was expensive but we got a room at the California Hotel at an excellent rate. They have a big parking garage and its free for guests. Check in was pretty simple but they had issues processing American Express and Discover for some reason even though they say its accepted. The room was excellent. Spacious, clean, and modern. Huge led tv. Its probably same as a room in a 5 or 4 star hotel. Very nice. There are not many cons. If I had to pick on something it would probably be the music and noise that you can hear from Fremont street until 1 AM. Also the Market Street cafe was like a cheap cafeteria and the servers were not very attentive. Overall this is a very good hotel outside of the strip. We had a car and the drive to strip was a breeze. I would definitely consider staying here again and recommend this place to others.

Parking was plentiful and affordable in Downtown Las Vegas. $5 on weekdays and $10 on weekends. They offer validation with a $10 purchase. The casino is one of the cleaner and nicer ones in downtown. The bathroom was very clean. I will consider eating/staying there next time I visit downtown.

This was my first time at the California and I'll be back! The casino was clean and had decent gaming options. There was plenty of tables open with no waiting at some. At one point, there was no line for craps too. The hotel was great! The room was spacious, had a fridge, and it was recently remodeled. I couldn't say greater things about the room! The hotel doesn't charge a resort fee either; this is one of very few in the Vegas area that doesn't charge one. The walk to the Fremont Street Experience was minimal as it's only 1 block away. Overall, the value is outstanding and I highly recommend the California!

When in Vegas my family and I love the California hotel. They have good food at fair prices. We especially enjoy the breakfast buffet and the dinner specials. Be warned that you need to eat early or there can be long lines however. The casino is fun and the staff is friendly as well.

We stopped here just to grab the graveyard special of oxtail soup at the Market Street Cafe (11pm-4am, if I remember correctly). So worth it! The hotel and the restaurant are typical for the downtown area (not as new as the strip but homey). We sat at the bar hoping for quicker service. Took a little longer than I would have hoped for the server to come and take our order but at least the food didn't take long to be served once we did. Alcohol not served in restaurant but they'll order you a drink from the bar and they'll bring it to you. All in all, definitely not glitzy but the food speaks for itself. The oxtail soup was a bit on the greasy side but we're in Sin City, so screw it! But the meat… The meat! Each huge piece of tail bone had so much meat, I wondered how big this ox must have been to have so much meat in the tail! And it just fell right off the bone. Good God! Going back for this with my wife, for sure. Perfect for hangovers. Don't know if I'd ever stay at the hotel but definitely coming for late night oxtail soup!

I went to the Cal for breakfast with the family, some gambling and to walk around the area. I felt all of the staff were friendly and helpful. This was a great surprise since it happened to have been busier than usual. My family loves it here. They recommend staying here whenever anyone comes to Vegas.

Daughter coming of age birthday bash. I wanted to have her introduced to Las Vegas slowly and downtown Las Vegas, specifically the Cal was perfect for that. The slower pace is great to learn table games and slots while not getting caught in the glamour of The Strip has. The food is great (if you are particular to the flavors available in Hawaii). The homey feelings this place gives off makes for a very comfortable environment all the while giving you easy access to the variety of downtown Las Vegas.

Com Booked a room on there and they had the best rates around… The downtown location was easy to access and close to the freeway. The rooms were recently renovated and are very modern and stylish. The casino is much smaller than the fancier ones on the strip, so it's great if you don't like the big crowds and loud noise. My wife and I love going to the Main St Cafe, especially for a late night snack. They are known for their oxtail soup and you won't be disappointed. The Cal caters to the people from Hawaii so you'll definitely feel the aloha spirit.

We stayed here this past June. It was my first time here and it was recently renovated. The rooms were nicely done and had shower stalls rather than bath tubs. I much prefer the shower setup. We asked for a room close to the elevator and got what we wanted. Not much of a view other than the water supply company. The location was just fine for us. It was a close walk to the Fremont street experience and the other casinos and shops. There is no buffet here but a short walk to the Main Street fixes that. Overall a nice, enjoyable stay. Would've been better if we won a little at the casino…

Last time I had visited was seven years ago and wow what a difference the renovation made… bright casino, clean and modern casino restrooms and the guest rooms are gorgeous! Suite (photos shared) 2308 was beautiful, spacious and close to the elevator and couldn't hear any hallway noise (there was a great group of class reunion folks gathered in the next suite and we couldn't even hear them once our door closed). Same great service and friendly staff from valet and reception to restaurant and casino dealers. I felt safe during my 3 day/2 night stay whether I was with my husband or with my female friends, especially during the early hours of morning. Would love to visit again and won't wait another seven years.

Friendly staff and service for the most part. Very comfortable for us since a lot of people from Hawaii stay here. It's close to other hotels and some pretty good restaurants. The new wing has some very nice rooms. Great value for the price. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that someone left a drawer full of underwear and socks and it wasn't cleaned out before we checked in. Went to the front to ask them to clear it out; they said they would but it's still there.

Nothing fancy, but the accommodations are acceptable and a decent value. The rooms are not in the best of shape, but they seem to be going through a comprehensive remodel and retheme of the hotel and Casino. If you're looking for a no frills place to stay downtown, California will do the trick.

Average. Inexpensive. Had to stay overnight due to no working AC in my home in 105 degree weather. It was very convenient. Very clean. Rooms were decent. Nothing upscale but the beds were comfy and not cheap like a motel.

Badly disappointed. A/C was not working good. So to say the room was not pleasant. The hallway to our room was much more colder. Main door for the room had a gap on the bottom nearly an inch and a half. I saw other rooms that also had the same gap. My problem with that is who's to say there are no rats running around there. The worst part of the stay was the pool was not in service. On a day of 118*F that would be unacceptable.

They give you a book of coupons for free while eating your vacation. Almost everyone in the hotel is Hawaii. The bathrooms in the rooms not serve well. You have to pull the lever for much time and when turn light is strong olle.

Extra crispy bacon at the Market Street Cafe is an excellent option. Don't miss out on the cheesecake at the Redwood Bar & Grill. Probably the best part is that after only a couple of days the waitresses started to recognize us! They were all so friendly and helpful. The location is also great, easy access to nearby other casinos and Fremont Street. Also a covered skywalk to Main Street Station.

Came for the oxtail soup over there. The main restaurant was closed for cleaning so we going upstair to the Ohana room for it. The soup was really good and big though it is not hot enough. The server was really nice and we really enjoy it. Would come again in the future.

Located in downtown Las Vegas the "Cal" has comfortable rooms and the "aloha spirit ". This hotel caters to many Hawaiian Island visitors and as such has foods available with an "island flair"… yum. My personal favorites at the Market Street Cafe are, Philippine breakfast — 3 eggs, rice, tocino (Filipino sweet bacon) and toast and for dinner either the prime rib dinner, which includes salad bar and dessert or the Butterfield which is my all-time favorite. One bite and you will know why. Prices are very reasonable. Conveniently located near US I-15 and Hwy 95, The Cal is close to all attractions in the Las Vegas Area, including the Hoover Dam.

Friendly people. A bit older but a very comfortable feel. If you like feeling like you're with regular people and comfortable and relaxed then this is a good place. They had 4 craps tables going last night and they were packed. Try the little Hawaiian restaurant upstairs.

When staying downtown, we always make it a point to eat at aloha specialties. My friends and family have been eating there for 30 years. Most recent visit did not disappoint. I got the 3 item Teri combo plate. Friends got the siamin. Everything was excellent.

Been coming to the Cal since I was a kid. It's a good place to stay if you wanna check out DTLV. It was recently remodeled, so it has more of a modern vibe now. I come down for Market Street Cafe, a popular food spot. They're well known for their specials and oxtail soup.

I like a lot, but you have to prepare the wallet.

Friendly service, great atmosphere, great newly remodeled casino with a nice hometown feeling. Market Cafe is a nice cafe with a good and diverse menu.

This was my first time visiting the older part of Las Vegas. I loved it. Cheaper, dirty, and entertaining. You can feel the ghosts of the legend's from the golden era. When I opened the doors to the California casino I was hit with the smell of 50 years of cigarette smoking, it was an instant time warp to a special time. Some of the machines still pay out in coins.

Best Hawaiian food you can get in Las Vegas. I got the Aloha bento which is comparable to Zippy's zip-pac. 5 of 5 stars here.

We arrived a few hours early and checked our bags like we had done dozens of times. After grabbing lunch, we went back to the bell desk to get cash that was left in a wallet that was inside a closed backpack. The cash was 5 twenty dollar bills folded in the change pocket. We could immediately tell the bag had been gone through. We asked for hotel security to let them know what had happened. They said that the room that bags were kept in had no video because of renovation. They gave us the number for corporate and they told us there was nothing they could do. BS! On the bright side our toilet was clogged up and the grout in the bathtub had a ton of mold on it… Rude staff, reeks like decades of cigarette smoke. Oh, almost forgot, two very sketchy blocks off Freemont Street. Thugs and homeless hangout. horrible!

It is pretty empty during super bowl and lunch time. The dealers don't look very friendly either. You can tell that renovations are happening. The lobby has been renovated and does not match the rest of the casino. It looks like it is going through an identity crisis right now. The temperature inside is much warmer than other casinos. There are also dead spots where the air feels stale.

Had lots of fun in the casino. There were lots of options for playing. The room was descent, clean but dated. Overall was a family friendly environment from arcade, dining, shops, ice cream and close proximity to Fremont street. We will probably come back in the future.

We were only at this hotel for the casino and meals. It is connected to our hotel, Main Street Station, by a walkway over the street. The Redwoods Bar and Grill was a fine restaurant with a great bartender and terrific wait staff.

Horrible place for non-smokers and families traveling with children. The entire hotel reeks of cigarettes. I mean everywhere! Even our Non-smoking room! Stay away. Worst Vegas experience ever.

The Cal Hotel & Casino is the place to eat, sleep and gamble if you're Hawaiian. The Hawaiian restaurant Aloha Specialities is up on the second floor that serves all things Hawaiian down to serving Hawaiian Sun drinks. There is a Lampert's Ice Cream shop and a seed and snack shop called Vegas 808 that sells Asian Hawaiian snack foods, including Chinese sausages (lop cheong) Even the employees are wearing Aloha shirts. The only con is this place is OLD in terms of Vegas years. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, don't go in. The place reeks of cigarette smoke and your eyes will burn and sting. Smoke and smoking are everywhere.

We like both the Cal & Mainstreet Station for our stays in Las Vegas. The staff at both Hotels have always treated us well, from bell staff, front desk, house keeping staff and B Connect staff are always friendly and helpful. We just got back to Honolulu on Nov 11, 2015 and enjoyed every day of our stay even though Hawaii lost to UNLV. Thank You Byron & Myran.

Unless you're from Hawaii this place treats you like crap. We come to Vegas every weekend and The Cal has the rudest, most unprofessional front desk staff we've ever encountered. Bathtubs don't drain very well so you have to take quick showers. Actually getting the room type you booked can be challenging. During our last to trips staying here I actually checked in to the hotel without the front desk employee saying one world to me. Casino is mediocre at best. Most of the dealers don't have any personality or the common decency to thank you after tipping them. With the exception of the ice cream shop every restaurant worker has been rude to us in one way or another. We know this isn't a Ritz Carlton but there is a basic level of customer service you'd expect from any business…

They have the best Ice cream place and there are very friendly people who stay there. There are always nice older men and woman from Hawaii there. Did I mention great arcade no other casinos have arcades in downtown. They have great buffet's for dinner along with the brewery which are in main street the hotel has a bridge that goes across to main street.

I tried to cancel my room here weeks before I was suppose to arrive, the lady on the phone said they would refund me 6 out of the 7 nights, which was fine I read that on the site. So I was about to leave for my trip and I went to see if I got refunded yet still nothing I call again and they reassured me that I would. Never did dont ever go there, or trust them!

Great hotel food increible pool bery clean I love the casino.

The hotel is very quiet, the beds and pillows are comfortable, and the sheets are light. The AC doesn't really cool the whole room. The shower was small and it drained poorly. The TV is old and the cable is very fuzzy. Worst of all, the pool was closed for maintenance. There was no offer to help us use a different pool. Overall, this is definitely a room that you'll just ant to sleep in and not necessarily spend a lot of time in.

Rooms could use some updating and dusting, but California is a good deal for the price. It is also one of the few Vegas hotels that doesn't charge a resort fee. It is very close to the Freemont Street Experience, and if you don't want to leave the property, you will still have all of your gambling and dining needs taken care of. A lot of Hawaiians stay here, so food served on site tend to have a similar bent.

The Cal is GREAT! 2 nights this week (11th and 12th). Room, king size bed, 17th flr. Clean, quiet and full of suprises i. E. ; 3 king pillows, extra towels (every day), 40"+ flat screen, HOT, HOT H2o and Cold, Cold AC (outside was 102-104). * Rode "Grey Dog" from Phoenix, arrived 6:30 A. M. Checked in and in my room by 8:00 a. M.! * Later checkout granted (2 hours)! * Bell Desk and Luggage Stor SUPER (had 6+ hrs to kill before departure at 8:30 P. M. )! Food "A Killer"… Philippine Bkfst. Oxtail Soup and Prime Rib (for $9.99 incl. Dessert) A MUST! (I am a former chef, gourmand and wine tasting dinners person from N. Cal. 17+ years… JUST AS GOOD as "MOST " ON THE STRIP… trust me). I will return!

The room was very clean. Usually you have some type of oder for cheaper places but I give 5 stars. Very inexpensive and the lobby was packed full of people.

My frd told me that this hotel no charge resort fees so I will get room regular then come mostly come vegas in a month.

Lot safer than most places around and lot more laid back. Cocktail waitresses will keep em coming whether you're playing the $100 tables or spend all night at the penny slots. Friendly dealers too.

California Hotel and Casino (Cal) was the best value for the money. First the Cal charges no RESORT FEE per night. That a big savings if you are on a budget. Unlike the strip there are a lot of places to eat for a good bargain in and near the Cal. If you gamble the table games have lower minimums then the strip which means you can gamble longer. Second the Cal is near the Mob Museum and about 4 minute bus ride to the North Outlet Mall. If you are a beer drinker go to the Main Station Casino and use the skywalk inside the Cal. Also, the Cal is a block from Fremont Street. This is where all the serious people who like music and beer hangout. Usually 4 bands perform during the evening. This is entertainment you can't find on the strip. For the rooms nothing special. No coffee maker and the TV stations are very limited but then who stays in the room to watch TV. If you are looking for a big pool forget about it. The Cal has a small roof top pool but its hardly used because the Cal is mostly older people from Hawaii. That a good thing because the casino has no loud music. If you are looking for a casino that is wonderful with a big pool then the Cal is not the place for you. Essentially you will have to stay on the strip and pay the extra Resort Fee of $30 a night. Although the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street is step above the Cal you still pay $22 a night in Resort Fees.

Enjoyed every moment at the Cal! The people, environment, food, rooms, services! We will definitely be back.

Came in with a coupon discount which they did not valdate. They had promise a free buffet which we used, however they ened up changing the meals to our rooms. Stay away if ur looking to save money.

My wife and I went here a couple times this week. The first visit was ok but mostly because my wife hit a jackpot. Second visit (a few hours ago) was going well the wife was enjoying slots while I played craps. While the dealers were changing positions I took a drink that went down my air pipe. I turned my head away from the table as a cough happened. I had my mouth covered but fluid got onto the table near the main dealer. Two of the dealers made comments. I apologized and explained that the drink went down the wrong pipe. The woman dealer continued to make a big deal out of the situation. Another lady came a used a cloth to wipe up a little bit. I apologized again. Two more comments were made by the dealers. The other customers seemed to understand but at this point I am extremely embarrassed so I took my chips and walked away. I understand that the situation was less than appetizing however the staff could have at least acted as though they understood and accepted my appology. I feel horrible about what happened but it is something that does happen with every human on the earth. The dealers made me feel like I was a horrible person. My wife and I left and won't be going back.

Regardless of what they say "Aloha" is definitely not spoken here. Don't expect and you'll be fine. Staff can be really rude and unwelcoming unless you're from Hawaii. Easily the smokiest casino I've ever been too. Table games staff does not like serous action. If you play more then 25$ a hand and spread your bets expect to be watched. Hosts do not like table game players so don't bother. Table game comps (including rooms) are handled through the pit.

Room was dirty and a lot of the fixtures were rusty People weren't very helpful casino was alright, and the shops inside were okay overall I'd say stay here if you don't wanna spend a lot of money.

I have been going to the California Casino for years. I enjoy the Hawaiian atmosphere. I haven't visited in a while. On Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, I went to your hotel to cash in chips I had won. I was very disappointed to hear from the clerk at the window that I would not be able to cash the 7 and 10 dollar chips. Basically telling me that the chips were worth nothing. I asked to speak to a manager and was told the manager was out to lunch and would be available in 1/2 an hour. I returned to the window after 1/2 an hour, stepped to the end of the line. When I reached the counter, I was again told the manage was not there. After waiting 2 more times in line and a total of 50 minutes, there still was no manager. Is it common for you to allow workers to carry on business without the supervision of a manager? Is it common for you to make customers wait for something that your clerks never plan to follow through on? After 50 minutes, said clerk would still produce no manager or cash in the chips. This clerk was extremely rude to me as well. Finally, a coworker said she would honor the chips and gave me the face value of $113.00. Why would you render your own chips worthless? I won these fair and square while gambling at your casino. This is certainly no way to treat a loyal customer. You can be assured not only friends, but my family from Hawaii and Las Vegas will be advised NOT to patronize your establishment.

The amenities are basic the water pressure ducks toilet stops up frequently staff is helpful and polite.

This is where we almost always stay in Las Vegas. There is a restaurant open 24 hours a day. Someone returned the wallet I dropped, with everything in it. The pillows are a little flat, the towels are a little thin, and the place is smoky. But you can't beat the price and the location. Plus, all the Hawaii people.
