Great wish they were still in florence al great affordable place.

This hotel needs to be condemned! It was definitely not clean. The online picture on website are far from what these rooms look like. Corporate has missed this hotel or something. Homeless people live on the back side of this hotel. The phone in the room did not have a dial tone. The towels are stained. The toilet had smears in it. Dead bugs on the wall. Holes in the wall. Mold on the ceiling. The room smelled awful! DO NOT STAY HERE!

Friendly service and glad swimming pool was open.

Do not stay here! We checked in with 6 young kids, I have never felt more uncomfortable. Rooms were dirty. Not dusty. Dirty! I am a housekeeper, these rooms were unacceptable, we tried to switch hotels but everyone was sold out. ALL NIGHT LONG, adults in pool area, yelling, screaming, drinking, loud music. Staff sitting outside smoking. It was scary, we had conjoining rooms and you could tell the door had been kicked in. Unfortunately we had to stay or sleep in our vehicles, needless to say no one slept well at all. We stayed in our rooms unless we were leaving for an event… took our valuables with us. I definitely do not recommend this for families, need to party and do some drugs… its the place for you! I'm just thankful nothing horrible happend to our family during our 1 night stay!

Room was filthy, didn't even stay because stench of smoke made me sick.

Do not stay here. Our first impression was good, we got to our room and quickly things got bad. The WHOLE CELLING FELL IN! My boyfriend got stabbed by metal from that whole incident. We had to move rooms. Our next one was fine. Until we started looking deeper into the room. Found mold everywhere. The room stinks so bad and definitely was not cleaned. All we could hear all night was running water which was so weird. But middle of the night our room is covered in roaches. Literally horrible don’t stay here.

It was run down. Room wasn't very clean, no towels brought to room after asking 2 times, and there was blood on the blanket. Fighting outside at 1 am. I will never stay there again.

I have mixed emotions about my stay. I can say I will NEVER be back. We booked rooms online and upon arrival our first impression was great the woman at the front desk was very nice and had given us a complimentary upgrade to poolside from an outside room. Our room REEKED of stale cigarette and had definitely NOT been cleaned. The housekeeper ‘Manny’ was brave enough to leave her card saying it was cleaned. I went back to the front desk and let her know what was going on and we got another room instantly. It smelled better but was still filthy! The pool is very nice from a distance but also very dirty. The hot didn’t work at all and was barely warm and very noisy! You can tell it was once a very nice place but the housekeeping staff is obviously a complete joke. Not to mention there were homeless people helping themselves to breakfast :/

Very poor service, my spouse and I went to stay the night here back in late October and had a family emergency so we ended up leaving ten minutes after check in, and we still haven’t gotten our refund back like they said we would, apparently the manager is just never at work to get ahold of. Very poor management, the whole place is just ran down, stains on carpet, missing paint, pretty sad. Do not recommend to anyone no matter how desperate one is. The pictures they use to show everyone online is very out dated and misleading. It isn’t worth your money.

Love, Love, LOVE the style and craftsmanship in this hotel! It really does feel like I just walked into Bourbon Street! Pool and Hottub were pretty decent size and Breakfast was Hot and ready to go!

Hot tub was nice. Pool was ice cold, even though it says heated pool. They charge you a 100$ deposit in case of damage, if paying by cash or prepaid card. No where on the website does it say anything about the deposit. Bed was hard, mattress needs updated — you roll to the middle. Housekeeper's need to learn how to dust. Inch thick dust on top of the baseboard behind the bed, dust on top of electrical outlets, dust on lamp shades, breakfast was good. Back door slammed shut at all hours of the night. Freezer needed defrosted badly. We wil NOT be staying here again.

Dissatisfied experience. All looks great til you lay on the delapitaded mattress and water backed up in tub when showering. I'm hoping a remodel is in the near future for this beautiful hotel.

We come back here year after year because it has character and is affordable. The pool area is spacious, roomy, and airy. It has a fun, unique vibe. They provide free golf clubs and golf balls for the kids to putt around with. There are also pool tables and action hut by the pool area. Lots of fun. They have seemed to regulate the temperature in the pool area better than in previous visits. Super cool pool area. There is a hugecold ballroom and the entire property has an unique feel to it. This property must have been quite the beauty when it first opened. They truly don't make them like this anymore. Negatives are that the place is older and a bit run down. It must be difficult and expensive to manage a property like this. The rooms are small and basic. The housekeepers could do a better job — if you are a neat freak don't stay here. If you can put up with a few bumps and bruises and looking for something just a little different then give this place a try. Within walking distance to Burlington Bees minor leagues baseball stadium, casino, and waterpark.

Have you ever wanted to go to sleep and couldn't because there was tons of screaming children and people making noise at the pool that is in the center of the hotel? Have you ever been startled awake by a cleaning lady flipping out in the room next door about what the guests before did to the room? Have you ever stayed in a hotel that makes you question your standards of quality and cleanliness? Have you ever really pondered what transpired in the room before you stayed in it? Have you ever been to a hotel where everyone seems to know each other and you are the odd one out? All I am saying is that it seems more like Burlington, Iowa's country club and not so much a hotel for people passing through. The people seem nice enough but there is definitely a vibe of community going on there and if you're not part of it you will most likely feel left out. I had a hard time sleeping, due to the all nighter happening in the room next door. The room was dank and felt lived in, something you don't want in a room that is supposed to be clean and ready for a relaxing night of sleep before you hit the road again. I don't recommend staying at this location, I question the cleanliness of the establishment and the quality of the stay that can be had here. All of these things are relative and my personal opinion. Enter at your own risk.

Ok, where to start? I guess this review is for people traveling and not the residents of Burlington, Iowa. My honest opinion is if you stay here get a room facing the outside, the indoor pool lies in the center of the hotel and it is a constant generator of noise and racket that will stop you from having any kind of relaxing experience, unless you are at the pool lol. It seems more like a local gathering place than a travelers hotel. It seemed everyone knew each other patrons and staff, which was off-putting. Also there is going to be a large population of children present, screaming and yelling, being children. If you are passing through town I can't say I would recommend staying there but if you do get an outside facing room or there will be constant unavoidable noise. You will thank me later.

Awful! The minute we drove up to this place it felt like a time warp from the 70's! Old building, needs a lot of updating! They did upgrade our room to inside near the pool. But later we realized that wasn't a great perk! Music playing loudly kids screaming and people talking loudly till after 10. If you enjoy that then it's a plus for you! The minute we walked into our room it reeked of cigarette smoke, Room was outdated, no fans in bathroom so you have to leave the door open unless you enjoy saunas, the water pressure in the shower was laughable and The carpets were stained! One day we left early in the morning and came back later in the afternoon to find our door hadn't been completely closed by the cleaning staff! Luck for us we took most of our valuables with us! The breakfast was terrible! The pool area was really the only somewhat pro of the whole place! In the pool area are inside rooms that look like new Orleans style house fronts. Kind of cool.

The only reason I have one star is because I can't give negative stars. At one time the hotel was gorgeous, but the last time I was there was 10 years ago. It needs to be updated. There is drenched dirty stained carpet all throghout the common area surrounding the pool. Hello soaking wet carpet? The room carpets are generally stained as well including the fabric accent chairs. During our stay we walked into our NON smoking room and the smell of cigarette smoke was so thick I had to back up a second, we let it be known to the from desk and decided to keep our room. The next morning while cleaning up we noticed a dirty condom on the floor next to the bed, so we switched rooms. As we had other family in the same hotel they found ants, or garbage in their rooms upon checking in. Simply they need a better cleaning routine and to update a few things and make things cleaner.

What the HoJo Burlington has going for it is that it's cheap and there's a halfway decent free breakfast, that's pretty much it. The whole operation seems like it was nice once upon a time, but hasn't seen regular maintenance or thorough cleaning in a very long time. Check in was not really a problem but I couldn't find the room and the desk didn't know where it was, I had to ask a janitor. Room door was filthy and rusted, patio was pretty gross, lots of cigarette ash and random office furniture outside. Inside the carpet had every stain and was threadbare, the furniture was pretty worn. Bathroom was very clean though, and the bed was incredibly comfortable with clean linens. A weird issue was that my keycards stopped working on three different occasions. Unless you really don't care where you stay and just need a shower and a bed, look elsewhere.

I was visiting a friend who was a guest. And the pool area was beautiful. And clean. The room was spacious and very clean. Overall it was a great visit.

Room was to warm, turned thermostat down to 60 and still didn't help. The chlorine smell was terrible. Had to wait at front desk for at least 10 minutes cause she was out smoking : (

If you don’t care about hygiene or a comfortable bed this might be the place for you. The kids will enjoy the swimming pool.

The greatest little bar pool side and the rooms have adequate storage. Love the fact that you can leave your blow dryer at home. In room refrigerators and microwaves plus coffee pot is outstanding!

Our stay was one of the worst stay I have ever had we had to have 2 rooms. The first one had ants in it the Second one had drugs on the TV stand. The kids could not sleep becouse people we being loud. The breakfast was bad. I had to call the cops twice.

The hotel it’s self I thought was nice for the price, it had a certain charm to it. The service for only one staff members attitude could have been better. But overall I enjoyed my stay.

The staff were very welcoming and accommodating-just ask. The indoor pool and hot tub are great especially when it's cold outside. Overall, it felt like a good family environment.

Great place to stay. Great price as well. Thank you very much Soup for being such an awesome bartender down at the tiki bar! We really enjoyed our selfs. Will definitely stay again.

This is the dirtiest, most nasty motel we have ever stayed in. Clothes still in drawers, pubes all over the bathroom, hairy, dirty, unchanged bed, dead bugs all over, dusty spider webs, trash around beds, under tables & corners, dirty sink, poop on back of toilet seat, "new" toilet paper that's obviously gotten wet, quarter inch dust on lamps & dirty fridge… Sadly enough I'm probably forgetting something… Oh and this is the 3rd room we've looked at in the same motel. Waste of money & time… So much for our anniversary! Thanks Howard Johnson for a memorable time! Other family were staying here tonight too & they're not happy either! They were given disinfectant & new sheets to clean their OWN room & weren't offered a different room! We ended up leaving & going back home at 1130 after stepping on someone's eyebrow ring w my bare foot! Disgusted & disappointed that our anniversary & hard earned money were wasted.

It was a nice room, but the maid service left something to be desired. Our first night, the soap was open and appeared to be used and the shower wasn't clean. One of the pillows had a stain on it (blood maybe) but there were 4 total so no big thing. We just didn't use the stained one. The sink was also not cleaned well. The second night it looked like they made the bed, dropped a couple towels (but no extra as we requested the first night), a fresh soap, and left. Dirty sink and shower, and if it was vacuumed at all it was a bad job. The front desk was nice and responsive to requests. Overall an average stay. We got a good price, but shouldn't have to give up good standard service to get it. Small things, but irksome…

I have stayed there two separate weekends and had great rooms. The inside rooms by the pools have all been redone and big tvs fast response cables which is a lot better then the casino.

DON'T STAY IN ROOM 119! BED BUGS! Both bed comforters had food stains. They did change bedding and were nice about it. Apparently after 2 nights you wear out your welcome, they stop leaving toilet paper and towels. My husband had to ask for them, they gave him a key to the room next door to get toilet paper. I had bites that at first I assumed were mosquitoes from fishing, but they were itching really bad and hurt. My husband and step son got them too. After a 17 hour drive home, I had to wash our clothing and throw away anything we didn't need. Needless to say we won't be staying there ever again.

Staff very helpful. In wheelchair and helped getting stuff for showering out a 20 foot uhaul. Helped with getting me to the free breakfast bar. Barb was extremely helpful at night. Would definitely stay there again.

Remodeling was finished in our section, we had 2 rooms, both were clean south side rooms w/ good beds and showers. Great price. Indoor pool area was large and appears clean, very nice. Staffing was very friendly and accommodating. Thanks.

Nice for the price — older property needs some renovations. Jacuzzi and pool were fun. Hot breakfast was cold but coffee was good.

This is an older motel but very nice. The staff is very friendly and helpful. In its time it was an ELITE motel for only the very well off. Now it shows its age and but the rooms are clean and have been updated. The inside pool area is amazing… you just have to see it.

I was surprised by the interior which had been made over to look like a square from New Orleans. Each room had a small semi private patio with a wrought iron table and chairs. The staff were friendly and cheerful. The room was clean and comfortable with mini fridge, micowave, coffee machine, iron and ironing board and a large flat screen TV with full satellite channels. The free breakfast was nice too.

Definitely one of the best hotels i've stayed at in the States. Considering the star of the hotel, this was definitely one that went beyond my expectations. The rooms were great, the pool was amazing, the place was clean. Most importantly, the employees were amazing, making the trip that much better. From the management to the cleaners to "Soup" the bartender. All made this a very memorable trip.

Choose to stay here as a small getaway for me and my boyfriend but we had to move room because we had an outside room that the heat wasnt working and the vents were painted shut. Once we switched room the heat in the new room worked great and my boyfriend and I were playing cards when I cockroach ran across the table. We called down to the front desk and she gave us back our deposit but told us she couldn't give us back the money for the room her manager had to do that in the morning and she would call us first thing in the morning! It is now 3pm we have not gotten a call and when I tried to call only got the answer machine!

Definitely not a positive experience. Though the staff was helpful, and friendly the common areas and the room certainly showed age. Our room had poor touch up work, a door that wouldn't shut without force, a fake thermostat in the room, and worrisome stained ceiling tiles. Again, staff was helpful when I had to remind them to restock the biscuits for "biscuits and gravy"; unfortunately the biscuits were stone cold. If you do not make it to breakfast early, they do not replenish the food without you asking them to. Although breakfast was out of biscuits, cream cheese, and poorly stocked with other items the manager strolled in at nine and the entire front area staff took a smoke break with her for fifteen minutes. I lived on Army food for 9 years and the quality was well below that. The central pool area was really nice looking and impressive; certainly the best part of this hotel. If you choose to drink at the tiki bar the price is decent but if you order something more complex than a Captain and Coke you won't be happy. The hot tub wasn't working and had an exposed pipe. Please wear non-slip shoes when trying to cross the area between the hot tub and pool area. I cannot speak to the quality of the other hotels in the area but if I ever came back to this city I guarantee you I would not stay here again.

Cute, quaint, quiet, recreationally all inclusive, 2 pools, 1 hot tub, putt-putt golf, arcade, poolside bar, french quarter inspired interior. Spacious quiet room. Some of the interior walls and doors leading to the outside had seen better days; however for the price and entertainment; plus environment… worth a few cosmetic flaws.

Horrible experience. Came into town for work decided to stay here because of decent rates. Set everything up for an extended stay with the front desk weekly. Decided to move due to lack of cleanliness and just run down condition of the place. Went to the front desk to pay for one more night before moving to another hotel and they advise me that they do not have a room for me. Pretty funny how I go from being weekly extended stay to leaving and not having a room the next night. Air conditioner is not seperate to your room so any temperature above 80 outside prepare to sweat in your room its a shared system with the whole place. I could go on and on about my 7 night adventure and the spiders. Stay somewhere else.

Ok so this place might have been a swinging place back in the sixties but today it just reminds me of my grandmother's basement. Our room was clean and looked to be recently renovated but the over powering smell of mold was distracting and even tho the beds were comfortable they have a serious mold problem in this hotel. If you have issues with mold book elsewhere.

I book a room for 2 night stay July 20 and 21 2016. We check in and they gave us room248 we went to are room and as soon as we open the door and turned lights on there were bugs flying around I called front desk and the night manger hung up on me. I then went down there and was told they had no other rooms available and that the room was find the day before. They charged me for both nights even know we did not stay it will be disputed. I would recommend this place to anyone.

The worst stay I have ever had at a hotel in my life! One of the room service mades tried to hit on my wife when she didnt acknowledge him he started cussing her. They took right around 1000 dollars from us in two days off our card and the rooms were terrible. This place was the most unproffessional hotel I have ever seen and their management is a joke. Do not stay here! They tried acting like we were wrong and they didnt take our money and I asked her how many more people was saying the same thing right now she said oh not many. Warning!

Loved the atmosphere a friendly staff and a quaint little Tiki Bar very neat and clean! Soup had some excellent conversations going at one time without missing a beat-!

They are crooked and charge your debt card at the end of the month for whatever days are left and then charge you for 7 more days rent. They act like they are oblivious to the charges when questioned and then charge you again. I was fortunate they only got me for 220 dollars but there are other people staying here who receives 700 dollar extra charges If you stay here pay a $100 deposit and pay cash only.

Our stay lasted for about five minutes because we walked into our room and it was filthy and smelly. The sheets were stained by some red substance. Everything was dusty and it looked like had not been cleaned in weeks. We asked for another room and we got it but received the exact same quality of room. The hotel has potential, but with poor management and lack of cleanliness it is not worth a dime.

We booked this room for a wedding in town, it was literally the only room available in town at that time due to Steamboat Days or something like that going on down on the river. There was trash out in the hallway the entire time we were there and it really did not seem all that clean, at least the pool seemed to be well chlorinated so the kids had a good time. For a non-smoking room it sure smelled like stale cigarettes. We could not get out of there soon enough.

This hotel could be completely amazing however it is not. The rooms and common area are completely filthy. It used to be a beautiful hotel and I was recently informed by a friend who stayed there that he was bit up by bedbugs. They switched him to a different room but when he asked to be comped for a night for his trouble they refused and denied having bedbugs then called the police and had him escorted off the property. This is only one of MANY problems at this hotel. With the exception of the bartender and the maintenance guys the staff is rude, lazy, and unhelpful. None of the staff is in any type of uniform to distinguish them from hotel guests. Not to mention how dirty the hotel is… I would NEVER recommend staying at this hotel. Spend a little extra and stay somewhere else.

Rude customer service! Asked what the rate was for the night and was told two different prices, one for interior and one for exterior. I asked what the difference was between interior and exterior and was told, with attitude, interior is when you step into your room and exterior is when you step out of your room. I asked for clarification since this to me does not make any sense to which the front desk lady said "oh my God! " And hung up the phone on me. I called the hotel manager and left a message as to why I won't be spending my money there tonight. Simply unexceptable.

The maid service is good n friendly n hard working I give them a 5. Now the desk clerk has been rude to me 3 time and rude to several other customers. She sat n watched a video on her phone as I trued to speak to her she barely responded. She is black n when another black woman came up in the middle of our conversation she became sweet n nice n walked off to attend to her. Racism is wrong n so far I have not been able to even speak to a manager to handle the problem. One was supposed to call its been an hour n a half. The other desk clerkd r courtious. Something should be done but nothing has been done so far. Howsrd johnson apparently supports racism. U make you decision. My rooms noce n cleam n maid staff is great but racism is wrong even when its african American against Caucasian. If something is not done I will fil a complaint at better business Bureau.

Pesticide on the front counter, overall scary appearance and the hotel and trip advisor would not refund my money even though we refused to stay there.

Oh my, don't go there. We, Anne and I went to Burlington on July 25 2015 for my sisters 90th birthday. There must have been something going on in town, Motels were all booked up so we wound up at Howard Johnson. Checked in in the middle of the afternoon. Turns out that I got charged $140 for a $70 room we'l get to that later. We were assigned an outside room, we went in got unpacked, then all hell broke loose outside, some guy was setting near our door getting drunk, beer cans all lined up on that little two foot wall. Pretty soon a whole bunch more showed up. A few doors away, several guys setting in and around a pickup, radio cranked up, l Guess it was party time for them Meanwhile next door, it got worse. Skid Row at the front door. Went on until evening, I asked the girl at the front desk to do something, she said she would didn't happen. Anyhow abutcalled again she said she would quite them down or escort them off the property. Well the rap (music) did go down to a roar. And continued until maybe three or so O'clock We considered just leaving, but to where and we had paid $140 for this room, so we just laid there hoping for morning to come. Finally it came. Looked outside, looked like a dirty Skid Row. Went to the front desk talked to the day clerk. She said the manager was not due in until 3 Pm but she could take notes and pass the message along. I described the worst motel night ever, for us.

This was the dirtiest hotel I have stayed at during the last 15 years of traveling for business. The cleaning staff is not to blame, it’s the management and owners, they only allow the cleaning staff 15 minutes to change all the bedding and clean each room. The buildup of grime and stains on the carpet were pretty amazing, I would never stay here again!

I would give 0 stars if I could. Dirty, clogged sink, rude staff. A chair was missing armrest, when I told the front desk they said they would have it fixed. They fixed the chair by tearing off the other armrest. Not worth 125 I paid per night. Gross hotel.

Very worn down. Our room was filthy. Stains on the floor, walls, ceiling and the bed. My husband and I left immediately after seeing the state of our room. The cleanest part of the room was the bathroom. The manager was nice. Would not recommend this hotel.

For 50 bucks a night this place still isnt worth the money. There are cockroaches just hiding in the cracks in all of my room. It also smelled like milder and mold, which overall made the room feel damp. Service was terrible especially by the owner Alnoor. This place is not worth any money.

For $50.00 a night this place was a disaster. Carpet in the room was filthy and they needed updating. Remodeling was inconsistent nice fixtures next to sloppy painting and when the staff cleans they need to clean the air vents. Staff was courteous and friendly, but with the amount of construction workers staying there they need to clean the walkways better. Howard Johnson you can do better than this. I have never assimilated the name of Ho Jo with a No tell motel.

The hotel is not terrible, it's not great. The room was affordable but not premium. The sheets are clean, fresh towels, and the water hot. The room however is dilapidated and well used. Things are old and sometimes stained, the furniture scratched, and ceiling tiles stained as if the roof had a leak. However I would stay again if I needed a place to put my head, but not a weekend away with the wife.

The absolute worst. The staff was most difficult. The room was nasty. Sheets were sticky and burn holes in the carpet. Smelled of mold/mildew in my room. Outdated everything. Breakfast area had bugs crawling and some of the food appeared to be leftovers. Never stay here! EVER.

Had an 8 yr olds birthday party there. So with just me and 5 girls they were entertained with the pool, and making waffles in the morning. Switched us to an inside room when learned had 5 girls with me. Thank you cause going from pool to outside room in Oct. Would not have been fun. But didnt have to cause moved us to inside room. Not the fanciest but would stay again.
