Arrived early and was given a room. We get there and room hasn't been cleaned yet. Maids get there as soon as we were about to complain and cleaned the room for us. I appreciated the service even though we were early.

This hotel is more like a hostel in that the bathrooms are shared with the whole floor. They provide towels, soap, and shampoo. There is a sink in your room but not in the bathrooms, and not every bathroom has a shower. They also run out of toilet paper regularly. However, the place is clean enough and cheap enough that it's a good pick for someone in town on a budget, and there is SO MUCH to do within walking distance. Be aware that this isn't the best part of town so be careful walking at night, but you do have to be buzzed in to get into the hotel which is comforting and the desk is manned 24/7.

You have to use a doorbell to get in as there is a large metal security door at the entrance. The doorbell is very loud and can be heard in your room. Horrible for sleeping! We had a room with a private bathroom. The room itself was fine for the price. The bathroom was large and clean and actually had a full bathtub. My only complaint if the doorbell!

THIS PLACE DESERVES NO STARS! $200 deposit fee for a room! RUDE AND SNOTTY CUSTOMER SERVICE! Went up for 4/20 and stayed over night, just me amd two friend. We didn't even crawl under the covers of the bed, we used our own light blanket each. We came in around 930pm from spending the day in the city and pass out around 11pm, dead to the world even with the super loud street we were on. We checked out at 11am like we're suppose to and head out. The room wasn't smoked in, wasn't damaged and we didn't even use anything from the room besides the TV and beds. I paid $140 for my room plus the deposit. It came out of my account and everything. Staff told me, we'll void the deposit when the room is good it'll take 5-7 business days. Okay that's fine, I'll wait. I'm still waiting btw its the 8th day, and after calling the hotel than my bank back to the hotel. Hotel says the voided it, its all on my bank. My bank is so confused because no, they hasn't. We tried a three-way call, my banker was trying to askt he dude the questions she has and he HUNG UP ON HER! THIS PLACE WILL PLAY A CAT AND MICE GAME WITH YOU AND YOUR MONEY! The guy was seriously LAUGHING at me saying they voided it and they don't want my money, and than when I asked to speak with the manager, he tells me to call back in an hour or two that's when the manager will be back "maybe". Maybe?!? Wow okay. I ask for the dude's name so I know who I'm talking too. Straight up refused to give me his name! rude.

Low standard hotel in a noisy street: this was the cheapeast option we found, and as we just wanted to have a room to party on a Saturday night, this proved not too bad: we came back after clubs close (some noisy clubs just below the hotel) so not too noisy, staff was more welcoming than we saw on other reviews, and found no bed bugs. And the hotel is really central in Mission district. But if you want to stay multiple nights, rest and have a pleasant stay, don't go to this hotel! It is really not worth its money.

The staff was rude and pretty much worthless. They couldnt find my reservation at first so I had no access to my room the first night of my stay with no refund. Not to mention the room was shabby at best with a community bathroom. It was a slightly glorified sro. "glorified" with an lcd tv. I would recommend you avoid the place if you can. It was the only hotel available at the time, thats how I happened upon it.

Roaches in the room. One crawled on my girlfriends leg in bed. Also there was a weight set under my bed from a previous person.

I used to live here. I love this place. I miss the bed bugs and sharing a bathroom with strangers… Back in the day we paid 30 dollars to stay here… Good memories… though times but good memories…

High price, worst amenities. Slow Wifi, TV does not work, only 2 plugs to charge phone and laptop. Bathroom not with the room but to be shared with entire floor.

This place is a room and a bed. There's a fridge in the room to. Great location for visiting Mission District. You can chose a cheaper room with shared bathrooms. You get what you pay for. Staff are cool. Parking out the back $20 for 24 hours and I always manage to get a space. A no frills place to sleep.

I have received a room via booking COM for the price of 138 dollars.
Unfortunately, I am terrified of what I am offered here.

No… no. Room door barely locks. Windows don't lock or even shut all the way. Shower curtain bottom is stained red. I am not a nervy type but I don't dare leave my belongings here when I am gone.

The worst of the worst, if you want to stay to live in the middle of cockroaches and mice, this is definitely the right place.

Run down shared dirty bathroom. Great location. Paid $25 to park.

The cheapest place to stay in mission sf. Puts you right where you wanna be. Kinda crappy inside but its fine.

Worst place I have ever stayed. No AC, it's in the total gettto and nothing like on the pictures. You park on the back of the hotel and still pay to park. Entrance looks like you're walking to someone's apartment. No AC, the fan they provided did not push a feather into the air. Did not have a restroom in the room. You have to share a shower with other people. Electrical wires showing, bed was nasty and bed had bed bugs. More to list but you get the point.

I reserved two nights at the el capitan. The first night I went to sleep and I woke up itching and I had red swollen bites on my skin. I was itching badly and these bites were all over. That evening I returned to the hotel and I pulled away the sheets and pillow. They were several bed bugs running around. I was utterly shocked and disgusted. I told the guy and they changed the room. The next morning I was leaving and I went to the receptionist to complain about the situation and requested to speak to the manager. We called to speak to the manager a few times but obviously they dont care and they are trying to avoid us. This is the worst hotel. Save yourself the trouble of getting bite by bed bugs and people who dont care about you and the experience you will have at the hotel.

Let's start with parking. They say they have parking, but it's not free. 20 dollars to park for 24 hours. Here is the kicker, if you leave parking lot anytime within that 24 hour period, someone else can park in your spot and you will have to pay 20 again to park. In other words, you can't go in and out, unless you pay again. No A/C. Beds are crappy. Bathroom bathtub not clean. Bathroom is shared. Others leave bathroom smelling like piss. I should have used the 86.00 that I paid per night to rent a clean room at motel 6 and have my own bathroom. If you were to ask me if I would recommend this place, I would say "HELL NO". Use your money for a nice hotel.

NO STARS! BED BUGS! STAY AWAY! If you still need more reasons why you shouldn't stay here keep reading… Booked through hotwire for a cheap price (big mistake) 1. Sketchy Parking lot $15 (better luck parking on the streets). 2. Not handicap friendly stairs all the way up. 3. Lady in underwear with pants around ankles in hallway (personally just ew) 4. Door won't lock from the inside and with undies lady outside … not safe. 5. Shower looked unspeakably gross and no room to sit on toilet. 6. Did I mention BED BUGS! GROSS.

The hotel was not difficult to find. There was paid parking on site unless you can find Street parking. The most surprising thing was that the rooms do not have their own bathrooms. You have to do your business and shower in a separate communal bathroom. Good to know if that is not your thing.

I had higher hopes for the El Capitan Hotel. The website was great, and the price on their website was average per night for the city, so I figured it would be decent. But no. The cleanliness is extremely lacking. You can tell that the housekeepers swept the floor, but they didn't pick up any of the dirt/dust; they merely swept it towards the sides and corners and let it pile up. The shared bathroom was okay for an old building, but the door barely locks. They could replace that lock for a few bucks, but they don't seem to care about updating anything. Luckily, the sheets on the bed looked like they had been washed. All in all, this hotel could use some work. I wouldn't stay here again.

Well it is true that on a Friday night, the patrons at the club and bar down the street were a bit noisy but then it was Friday night and our room was street side but the previous night was fine. My husband and I stayed a couple days recently in December and our experience with the El Capitan staff was better than good, they were very helpful and courteous and the rooms, hallways were simple and clean. It is a neighborhood hotel… not glam… just a straight forward place to stay when you are in a bustling part of the city. I will stay here again when in the mission district.

This place deserves a negative five stars DISGUSTING! The bathroom looked like it had been never touched the rooms wear filthy. I didnt even sit on the bed. The people wear extremely rude we asked for our key deposit back and they try to refuse it saying we never gave it to them finally after we argued they finally gave it back. Do not go here your health depends on it. Your better off sleeping in your car seriously.

El Captain is a place where you go when you don't respect yourself. The staff is marginally helpful, quiet and appear more interested in rent and security than making it a fun place. Additionally, the smell of pot is pervasive, I wrote Ellis-Tinsley (the owners) and heard nothing in return. Sadly there process of customer support is to work around their needs. I don't recommend this hotel however, I am unsure if another hostel/hotel would take the time to vett out the smokers and cheer up the place to make your time a great time.

Really bad place to stay. The area looks like you are at the Bronx. Restrooms/bathrooms are disgusting. It's smelly. Rooms are terrible. Customer service is ok but overall a bad place to stay. They allude you into thinking they have parking available for their customers when in reality you have to pay for your own parking. Definitely don't recommend this place at all.

Bugs all over me. Itchy for weeks. Dirty sheets. Had to pay what I would have on a better hotel downtown on bedbug/scabies/lice removal. Have pics to document. Im a frequent traveler with a high tolerance but this is disgusting. Shared bathroom is dirty and tenants who live there knock loudly and yell at you to hurry up showering. Never again. Want my $ back.

PErfect for temporary housing. I lived here for 900 a month, cash, no commitment. Cheaper than the average apartment prices in the city. Much better than the other RSOs on Mission.

Room was ok. Shared bathrooms are disgusting. Service was friendly. Location is good is between airport and downtown (by train a half our in both direktions).

This place is considered to be a hostel they have private rooms w/ private bath for 75 dollars plus tax and then they have private rooms w/ shared bath for 50 dollars plus tax. So I figured this place was going to be a roach coach icky place considering the outside is. But the rooms are actually remodeled with a nice look. Totally a good cheap room.

In around 2007 I had a room mate who used to live at this hotel. It's yet ANOTHER of the SF rip offs. Renting out RESIDENTIAL HOTEL ROOMS to tourists. My roommate Dan was a poor down on his luck guy — an ex vet that had to endure living here until he found the place (a private home with several rooms for renting) that I also lived at for a couple of years. He was just another down on his luck ex Vietnam Vet. He had lived here when he had no place else to go. Now they are catering to tourists. There were way TOO many homeless back then. Why are there more now? because these places are catering to tourists now. SHAME ON YOU! And this is also chronic BED BUG INFESTED AS WELL.
