Visited 'mint bar' which is ajoined go the backpackers for a drum and bass night. Great small intimate venue. Had a good night. Shame I had work the next day.

Nice place, again I went in winter so I think this helped the quiet situation. Clean, staff friendly. Clean bathroom. Good.

Wifi is only available at the reception from 7am to 7pm. The rooms are fine, but during a May visit, they had the heater cranked up all the way which made it ridiculously hot. Opening the window was fine but noisy since the bar was right outside.

This place is horrendous, I made a booking just 5 minutes before to go, when Arrived I saw how dirty it was and I didn't want to stay there. The staff said that even though I made the booking five minutes eaelier the policy doesn't allow a refund, they wouldn't let me talk to a manager saying that there weren't at the moment. They told me to call booking. Com because it depends on the website, which is a lie, booking. Com told me that it is a decision that has to be taken by the hostel. Once faced with that the lady changed her previous version and said that it's their polocy and she cannot cancel the booking. How ridiculous these people are over 40$. Lucky for me I managed to call my bank in time and block any payments to be taken.

Room is warm and comfy. Staff is nice. But it's not really a good choice if you wanna have a good sleep. Too much noise!

We had a really nice stay at Base Wanaka for 2 nights in a double ensuite room. Excellent value, a really comfortable bed and clean room made for an enjoyable and peaceful stay. Location is perfect, just a short walk to the lake and to some great bars and restaurants in town. I have stayed in Base hostels plenty of times before and Base Wanaka has been one of the best!

Location fine. Room very small. Noisy fan in bathroom. I don't think there were clean sheets on my bed. I woke up itching which was a worry.

If you're staying at base, I wouldn't expect too much. At the end of the day, it's a place to stay in the lovely town of Wanaka, but it's nothing great.

Pros: good location, central to Wanaka. Supernarket right next door. Bar is part of the hostel, good array of drinks and a free drink for each guest. Cons: Poorly staffed reception, messy and small kitchen, particularly considering the size of the hostel, flimy pillows, very evidently geared toward coach trip customers and aiming to sell as many trips, tours and experiences to you as possible. No parking available, paid public car park nearby or residential streets. Costs: Wi-Fi $4/24 hours or $12/7 days. Laundry $4, detergent $2. Tea/coffee $1.50

Loud, full of teenagers, kitchen is wayyyy too small for the amount of people they accomodate, TV lounge is filthy and the TV doesnt even work. Coffee costs 2 dollars. The bar is over-priced. Showers are small and have zero pressure. Also accommodation is way overpriced for what you get. The only good things are it's location, and the reception staff are friendly.

Of course, Base is loud. Haven't seen that mentioned, but if you didn't know already, beware. This Base had clean but small rooms, and a pretty small kitchen. Definitely not big enough for the amount of people. Staff were nice and location was good, but there are many better options available.

Location is nice, free Wi-Fi until 7pm is weird but workable. Room was fine, if a bit worn. Showers were surprisingly clean, toilets weren't. Kitchen was a disaster and definitely not big enough for the number of people that base can hold. Only one working washer and dryer out of 8. Staff was friendly.

Kitchen was so small for the amount of people there. Was very dirty don’t think anyone cleans it. Nothing worked. Toasters you even had to hold it down to toast your bread. Washing up liquid dispensers were all empty. Would normally not care in smaller hostels but base is a well known one, expected a bit better. Oh and rooms were small and linen had stains and rips in. Bathrooms were also pretty meh. Was happy to see the back of it.

Cleanliness should be improved. Price is also too high for what you get. Small kitchen. Wi-Fi is charged from 7pm!

Cleanliness is ok, but you should not expect too much. The staff is helpful but cool. We are constantly annoyed with advertising for the bar in the Hostel. But otherwise.

This backpackers reviews they advertise are false for what you get. Our room was very poorly maintained. Cracked window, broken rubbish bin and no soap. The bed top sheet had hair in it and the TV sucked. The "double bed" is two singles pushed together and was pretty stiff. This backpackers is just a quick cash grab for backpackers who need a nice shower and a lay down.

Super friendly staff. Nice dorm rooms. Bit messy and there’s always people partying late here.

Good stuff: The rooms are quite roomy, there are outlets and personal lights. Showers are quite clean, spacious, with good pressure. Cheap food and drinks at the bar. Central location. Bad stuff: Kitchen was really messy and small for the size of the hostel. The staff was a bit indifferent and not very passionate.

Awful room, awful treatment by management — August 2017 We booked a 2 night stay in a 4 bed dorm room as a couple. We were given a dorm in the Sweet Suites area of the hostel which had its own private bathroom. To begin with, we were very happy with this. The bedding provided had some stains on the covers and there was a big wad of hair sat on the plughole of the shower, but we thought 'it's a hostel, we can deal with that. ' During the first night, I was woken up by water dripping onto my face as it leaked through the ceiling. I went to reception (at half 2) and spoke to the lad who was working the night shift. He said he would bring something to soak up the drips, but only offered a change of room when I suggested it. He sorted us out though. In the morning, the stuff we had left in the leaking room was soaked as a huge puddle had formed. The lad who was now on reception was brilliant, offering to launder our wet clothes for us. He informed us that management would be on later to discuss the problem. When we spoke to the duty manager, she said how unfortunate we were and that it's OK as we had another room. And that was the end of it. I would suggest that Base send their managers on a customer care course as I would have expected some sort of compensation for a completely ruined nights sleep. No offer of a refund for that night or even reduced rates was made.

Is can be good but a bit expensive and the Internet costs after 7pm to 7 o'clock.

Booked in for 8 days at Base Wanaka. Checked out after the first night. I don't think you have to be a clean snob to appreciate a clean place to stay and unfortunately Base Wanaka really needs to get its act together. So many independant reviews saying similar issues can't all be wrong and rather than apologising or making excuses whoever is running this place just needs to sort it out. Just a couple of things I noticed in the few hours I was there: — Crusty stained bedsheets with long dark hairs over the pillowcase. — Lots of hairs in the shower like someones had a personal shave. — Broken toilet (with notice on it), but its okay because the maintanence guy is busy hammering a table together out of some pallets for about 3 hours outside your window. — Disgusting kitchen appliances. A kettle that looks like someone tried to boil a turd inside it. — Super hot room with windows that only open 1 inch presumably to stop you jumping out and trying to end the misery. I barely slept. I get the impression whoever owns Base hostels wants to make as much money as they can without investing in their staff or the accomodation. If you're thinking of staying here, do yourself a favour and take a walk over to YHA backpackers hostel over the road. Or just sleep on the park bench.

It is very convenient place for visitors. There is supermarket close by and not far from city center. Yesterday, there is a big group of 48 students from University joined the kitchen and a bit noise around 3am. This is the way it is … We share… no problems.

The first problem when I open the door smell like a just finish painted after that I changed the room. Second problem when I got a new room smell like a smoking! (I booked my room non smoking) 1. Extremely bad smell 2. Noisy from outside and inside! 3. The room very dirty I haven't seen like this before 4. Power outlet not enough 5. Heater it doesn't work I was freezing at night Finally I really unhappy to stayed. I don't want to come back this Brand again. I paid 95 Dollars I think this room suitable price is 40-50 Dollars.

There's ear plugs on your bed when you check-in… sums it up. Rooms are tiny (6 dorm) with no storage facilities which is poor. Pool table in reception is cool and has a movie room. 1/4 dryers were working which was a huge inconvenience. It's cheap for a reason.

Yeah… Rooms are really small. Some beds have no power are personal lightning. They allow the mint bar to play music till very late that will keep you up when if your not a light sleeper.

When we arrived check in was smooth and quick. We stayed in a double room and found parking easy. The room itself was reasonably priced for the location and very clean. The room wasn't huge but what do you expect from a backpackers? The bed was very comfortable and bigger than the standard double. Overall a satisfactory experience.

Good location but the free Wi-Fi does not work (it coincidentally they have just a paid Wi-Fi service), it's noisy and they charge to keep the bags the day in an open room and accessible to all.

Friendly staff. Stayed in an ensuite room that was pretty good. Was in a good location in Wanaka on the edge of the city centre but it was still easy to walk to nearby places including the supermarket for cheap (-er) eats.

This is a sleeping quarter for drunk teenagers. I am writing this review from my mobile phone from one of the dorm rooms at Base Wanaka. 5 drunk kids came in at 4am this morning after bashing doors and swearing down the corridors. 2 Kids are having sex in the bunk bed below. There is no staff here. My husband and I are considering leaving to sleep in the car in the parking lot. This the absolute worst place we have stayed anywhere in the world! BASE WANAKA SHOULD BE ASHAMED.
