I emailed a few times before booking and they were incredibly helpful and fast with their responses. Upon arrival, we were greeted with fruit juice drinks, our room is lovely, it's very quiet and the beds are very comfortable. The air con is wonderful. Breakfast is plentiful, varied and tasty. You can have freshly cooked pancakes or omelettes, various meats, fruits, pastries, yoghurts. The pool is great, it's just at the side of the harbour so you get a little breeze off the water and there are always people around for drinks or food. It's a lot of steps out of the hotel to go into Valletta and a steep walk. I would 100% recommend this hotel.

We have been coming to Grand Excelsior for 6 years and they never disappoint us. Breakfast service is impeccable from the food served to the table service. Beach/pool service is very good by the waiters all obliging and willing to offer any information we need. Issue with a leakage in our bedroom we were move immediately to a sea view room We ask a question regarding the weekly BBQ to a waitress and if they do not know they are quick to check with their superiors. Very polite professional and willing to serve. Room service excellent first time we have used this service this year 2022. It has been unusually hotter this year in Malta thank goodness for our choice to stay In Grand Excelsior when it is too hot to move 🥵

Second visit here. Good clean hotel, lots of very friendly helpful staff. Food is delicious, breakfast buffet choice is wide and varied. Omelette and pancake stations for made to your order and liking eggs and pancakes. And only a 5 minute walk from the fountain and bus depot or 10 minutes in the other direction to the shuttle ferry to Sliema. The pool is by the sea so you have the choice of either which suits us since I don’t like holiday pools and hubby doesn’t like swimming in the sea! 👍

Only arrived yesterday. The hotel is beautiful. The service on arrival was so friendly. Hubby's birthday and within minutes of our arrival complimentary cake and wine delivered to our room. Late meal in the restaurant and the food was fantastic. 8 more days of this! 😃😃

The best thing about the hotel is the staff. We felt at home. Although I must say that such facilities do not correspond to a 5 star. It has many deficiencies such as old towels, somewhat outdated istalations, lacks maintenance and lacks simplicity and a touch of elegance. It is very well located and with everything said I recommend.

I’m having a few days at this hotel and was going to use the Spa. Has anyone experience of the Spa?

Beautiful hotel, cleanliness, order, silence. A room with a balcony and sea views. Very friendly staff. There are Russian speakers, which greatly facilitates communication. We were delighted.

We are here on our 20th anniversary. We booked in early, our room was ready but had not been inspected. It was worth it, the room was perfect. A full view of the harbor with a terrace. The staff are fantastic, but as with all hotels, you will get glitches. They are very professional and quickly fixed the situation. The breakfast buffet was a taste of home to this long lost Englishman. The location is perfect for those trips into Valletta. As a 66 year old, I had no problems with the walk up the hill. In fact we were averaging about 6km a day walking during our 12 day stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a great experience. Bravo.

The hotel is located in a good place in Valletta (although you'll have to scale more than 80 steps in the heat every day if you want to go somewhere). The hotel itself looks gorgeous but some parts of it could use a renovation. Facilities are okay. The staff is generally attentive and helpful (special thanks for Valerio at the concierge desk). During my 5-day stay there, I've had plumbing problems in my room every other day and I've had to call housekeeping and maintenance on at least 10 occasions. The housekeeping and maintenance staff while helpful is not really adept at handling these kind of situations and they've made quite a few mistakes. At one point I even had to ask for a manager to handle things. Breakfast options are good enough, although you'll need to wait a bit if you want omelettes or pancakes. If you can get a good price I'd say go for it, but if the prices are comparable to other 5* hotels in the area, I'd say choose those.

Overall very nice hotel, excellent service, dissent food and great location. The 5 star hotel is located just outside Valletta — the catch is that the 10 min walk starts with 88 stairs to the road (no way avoiding those stairs if you choose to walk). The hotel itself is very nice, the design is a bit old but that plays nice in the overall vintage-classic atmosphere of the place. Service is perfect. The room gets cleaned twice a day, plenty is staff people wherever you go, everyone are welcome and approachable. The food is the weakest link. Every breakfast is exactly the same, we ate there 6 mornings and nothing changed. There is only 2 restaurants in the hotel and only one of them relevant for a proper dinner and is mostly fool at dinner times. One last small thing is that the TV in the room was lousy, bad picture (worst I've seen in ages) and bad audio. The TV brand is the hotel's which explains that. Worth the stay, real 5 stars service and great location.

Fabulous hotel, friendly staff and always willing to help. The room was big and with a very comfortable bed. The inland balcony, amazing. The beach, perfect. Great location. The 88 stairs a blessing for health, you just don't need gym anymore :). I recommend the hotel from my heart. If I will go again in Malta, definitely this hotel will be my choice.

We were here on our honeymoon. After accidentally booking a hotel in St. Julian's without realizing what sort of neighborhood it was we booked a room at the Excelsior last minute and it was exactly what we wanted. We took a pool-view room (worth it) and it was spacious and comfortable. Amenities and service were top notch, the staff made us feel special and well looked after. Food was good though the menus were unadventurous, and Valletta offered much more interesting culinary options. Themed buffets were on offer almost daily from the hotel but the price was hard to justify at ~35€ per cover. The continental breakfast was generous, but the pastries were small, super-market style things rather than the expected fresh-baked you would get at a bakery. If you opt for the breakfast, keep that in mind. The fitness centre is reasonably well equipped for a hotel, and while I would have liked to have seen more cable attachments, I was able to make do and it hardly seems worth docking points over. All in all, we plan on returning someday… Maybe for an anniversary.

Good morning everyone, still waiting a call from Mr. Cris manager F/B department about my last payslip, I want to write a review about the breakfast in this hotel. I worked there as a waiter for 7 months and about the food, you can be satisfied for each thing that you desire, the quality is also good, the service many times is bad becouse change always the waiters. What's the reason? No one want to work for breakfast, the wage is very low and the tasks are very heavy, I worked almost always for breakfast and my task is mainly clearing! Yeahh take off the plates from the table, put these on the Tray and carry it on at the kicthen, in my last three months I claimed about this situation but nothing at the end my work was that. I'm italian, at the beginning my manager offer me great opportunity to work at Grand hotel excelsior, the Team member manual Grand hotel excelsior 2017 talk about equal opportunities employer irrespective of the race, nationality et cetera, I very much doubt! I remember a owner's Grand hotel excelsior photo on the showcase in front of me when I punched for work, he says help me to improve my hotel, I 'd like say to him maybe takes improved management about human resource!

Big hotel with nice pool area. Rooms clean and tidy. Excellent cleaners. Service in restaurants is generally OK, sometimes in the 24hr lounge they are understaffed. Reception area needs improvement, the staff never lookup when you pass and happily let you stand waiting for ages. Housekeeping have nailed it already, always smiling and friendly. Overall we have enjoyed the hotel and look forward to coming back.

Hotel beautifully located on foot of the anime center of Valletta and Quiet on the edge of the sea-arm. Unreproachable quality. Beautiful new facility. Staff devoted and friendly… Giant comparable to the Asian spa resort for a price also fashionable… to redo.

Highly recommended. Wow. You must eat in the restaurant too at least once during your stay, beautiful full flavoured meals. The staff were very professional and helpful. We went on an excursion one day and a boat actually picked us up from the hotel jetty (much more impressive than a taxi! ) Ooh and the shampoo and conditioners provided in the rooms smelt divine!

The room is great maid service absolutely spot on all are very friendly not had a problem with breakfast you do have to wait for tea and coffee but it comes eventually and you are on holiday chill.
It was our anniversary while we were here and they brought a card chocolates and wine to our room.
The bar food and the snacks are all delicious staff are so very friendly haven't checked out so can't comment on over charging we pay for what we get at the time so should get all the charge back x.

The most: the situation, the exceptional setting, the cleanliness everything is nikel despite some forgetfulness of the housekeepers (toilet towels removed not renewed), the equipment, the reception, the kindness and especially the professionalism efficiency And the helpfulness of the concierge.
The least: noise nuisance due to work, kindness does not erase the lack of experience of some servers. Not enough shuttle rotations that forces you to take taxis, 5 stars requires.

The hotel is at a very good place; close to the city center, close to bus station. Breakfast is good; big and nice hall, with wide choice. I stayed twice already in 2 different rooms. The bathrooms would need a refurbishment. The staff is very nice and helpful.

Comfortable and well-located hotel, close to the centre of Valletta. However, avoid the evening Buffet, whose price (35 €/person) is too high compared to the dishes offered. The breakfast buffet is on the other hand plentiful and varied.

No five-star stay! The food in the restaurant is bland and unloved. The wellness area has come down and not inviting. The complete system is in need of renovation. Not recommended.

Hotel really good. Third hotel that I visited on Malta and so far best. Approx. 800 meters to Valletta and fast to the central bus station.

I think I got the exact worst room in the entire hotel so my opinion may not be fair. They serve instant coffee for the breakfast. No free bottle of water in the room. Nice gym and swimming pool (free) but you have to pay for sauna… Staff not so friendly as you would like. Very good location near old quarter.

Nice luxury hotel at the gates of Valletta.

Awesome hotel at an even more awesome price! Centrally located a short half mile walk from Valletta, you can easily stroll over to some of the best restaurants in the world. The hotel itself, is equipped with a great restaurant and serves up a mean little morning buffet as well. From an ocean front pool, to Tiki Bar, to gym, this place has what you need. My only criticism is that it could be time for a modernization of interior design and technology (the TVs and such are quite dated).

Very pleasant, only the Wasserspuelung sometimes makes problems. Breakfast is only recommended.

Beautiful hotel, our room was very spacious and had a fab view of pool and sea, it's quite a walk up hill to Valetta but hotel does off a lift service, the room was very well looked after, both am and room turn down service with chocolates every night which was lovely, the lad with the water is a bit too keen, just knock and in so we had to keep the lock on, breakfast was fab special mention to the lad on egg station he made best poached eggs! There is lots to choose from too, we only ate once in the hotel as we couldn't eat an all you can eat buffet every night, I believe there was al a carte but too many nice restaurants in Valetta. Only down side no changing rooms next to pool, we hate going down in our robes and slippers so got changed in loo! The jacuzzi was just warm so couldn't spend long the pool was slightly warmer. A huge thanks to the transport and concierge who helped identify the location of a church behind my mam, the picture was from 1951! I'd definitely recommend the hotel.

Full of slag. Old shabby rooms, really shabby! Shabby furniture, barely working toilet with a shaded chair and yellowed towels. Thank God came alone, without a wife and a child and only for 4 nights. Never again.

The breakfast is a joke. You have to wait to get a table, which isn't clean. The chairs are dirty too. When asking for a clean one, the dirty one was put on the next table. You have to ask 3 waiters to get a tea or a coffee, but for this you have to find somebody to ask for coffee/tea. The tea was often cold, the coffee was a desaster. The buffet for breakfast was not something special. Every day the same. Only jam in plastics. The butter stands near the toaster and was melt. People, who loves english breakfast, are in advantage. The atmosphere in the breakfast room is similar to a train station hall. 5 stars? Never!

Went for afternoon tea. Was great. Very attentive staff especially cos of our food intolerances.

The hotel rooms are large, pleasant the indoor pool also with a jacuzzi. The staff is nice and helpful. Very good location, in 5 minutes you can get to the center.

It is an old, visually beautiful hotel. The rooms are large, have a large bathroom and balcony. The furnishings are antique and the TV st is a fuzzy cheap product. The bus station and the city can be reached in about 8 minutes on foot. Front office and concierge are professional and very friendly. German does not understand the staff, nor the concierge. The evening cover service is very friendly and corrected several times the inaccessibilitys that were neglected by room women.
In the bar there is, every day alternating, piano music. Unfortunately, the smell and noise of the evening buffet rises in the back of the bar, from the open ground floor.
The grounds are spacious and perfect. The spa is unfashionable and the whirlpool is too cool. The breakfast room has a beautiful view. The buffet is clear, not varied and the juices are made of concentrates. It always depends on which restaurant chef is on duty, accordingly there is attention and friendliness. Often the staff is only concerned with themselves. In case of serious complaints, it is not necessary to apologize to the guest, not even the restaurant chef. Too bad, but according to my experience only a 3 star level.

A very recommendable hotel!
The entire hotel complex, i. E. The spa, pool and fitness area, as well as the restaurant and bar are nicely decorated and always clean.
The staff is virtually everywhere and is always ready to help the visitor or To offer something to this.
The rooms are nice sized and are also suitable for 2 people. You can find something here in every drawer and is equipped with almost all you could need, from sewing kit to slippers and flashlights. The view from my room is also great and very recommendable at night! I just missed the lack of ceiling lighting as a central light in the room, because here you have to get along with three table lamps.
The façade of the hotel definitely has its most beautiful days behind it, but this will certainly be renovated soon.
I liked this hotel very much because everything was thought of. Those who can also live with the expensive prices in the restaurant and the always professional staff, will definitely be happy here!

A well located, equipped, and smart hotel. The views from our room were great and the balcony was a good spot to sit and enjoy the warm weather (we visited in November). However, you could easily see into your neighbours' balconies, so don't expect any privacy when using it. There is a rather grand series of stairs down from the main road through terraced gardens, but once you're out on the main road take care when crossing! There is a slight bend and trying to get across was a bit of a pain. The rooms themselves were well-appointed and had all of the facilities that you would expect from a 5 star hotel. However, our bathroom was in need of a bit of maintenance with four cracked tiles, a hole in the skirting next to the bath and the paintwork needed touching up. The breakfast buffet was fine and included a wide range of different types of food to suit most tastes. We were going to try one of the restaurants but there wasn't a menu available to assess whether they did the type of food we wanted and we didn't necessarily want to risk that their buffet option didn't suit us either. That being said, the staff were all very friendly and we would probably go back if we stay in Valetta again.

Great hotel and facilities. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The only problem I found was the actual location: although at the back of the hotel you have great views, a private beach and a small marina, if you want to walk to town (Valletta), you have to climbs a lot of steps, then cross a busy road and continue up the hill for about 10 minutes. Personally, I would rather be a bit closer to town… but of course if you are going to stay in the hotel most of the time this shouldn't be a problem for you. Also the outside steps were really hazardous due to the rain: they were VERY slippery and a few people almost fell (myself included) going down from the top of the entrance.

Luxury and good service… Eye with stairs.

I was in November for four nights in this supposedly 5 star hotel: to the positive: — large, clean and quiet rooms — central location. Ideal for Valletta-excursions — very friendly reception area — private sea access to the negative: — The hotel has a strong effect on the years. Furniture is tapped, upholstery is frayed, the carpet floor throws wrinkles, in many places scratches and quirks characterise the facilities.
— The breakfast buffet is a pure Vollkathastrophe. Unfriendly and incompetent staff manages to serve an aqueous coffee in an hour. For all juices, the disproportion seems to be 1:5.1 liter of juice is punched with 5 litres of water. Bread and baked goods (such as croissants etc) are soft (as stale) and taste-neutral. There are open containers around which, for example, Are filled with chocolate cream, peanut butter and honey. In this, the whole morning can be happily coughed in and spit in. Overall, the breakfast restaurant is not a place of rest and relaxation. Due to the high noise level, one is happy to be able to go out again. All in all, a price of €18 is completely unacceptable.
— The hotel's own taxi calls for an airport trip €20. A public taxi costs just €17.
— Room service disturbs the rest several times a day. On the one hand the rooms are cleaned, then someone comes over and fills the water, so that later another person will distribute chocolate tablets.

5-Star Hotel just outside Valletta's city centre. Excellent service, adequate to the rank. Great view from the dining room! Only "problem": 88 Steps to exit. Highly recommended.

Great hotel with nice pool area, access to the sea, very courteous staff and very comfortable Vintageeinrichtung. The breakfast buffet is varied and tasty, the proximity to the sea, to the buses and the city is another plus.

Great facility. A little dated. But all efficient though not flawless.

We had 24 people previously reserved to stay at the hotel. When we checked in after a long day of hiking no one had told the hotel staff we would be arriving. The front desk clerk apparently lost the dinner reservation as well and tried to double charge the rooms even though we had documentation of the prearranged reservation and payment. As far as customer service goes, I've had far better at least prestigious hotels who genuinely care about their guests. I feel like we tore a page out of Jacob Tomsky's book. The rooms were clean and save the front desk, the rest of the bar and restaurant staff were attentive and kind.

One of the best hotels I stayed in. Service is excellent. Staff very friendly especially Eileen and Maxine but in general staff everywhere around the hotel are very friendly. Facilities around the hotel are great from swimming pools to bars and restaurants everything just marvelous.

If this was a 3 / 4 star hotel then it would deserve a better rating, but no way does it deserve a 5 Outside appears grubby and in need of a power wash with black areas on the outside of the room parts Hotel rooms are meant to be available from 1500 but this doesn't happen
Receptionists seem to change shifts at 1500 and leave their colleagues on a late shift to take the complaints
Reception staff are rude and unhelpful
Duty manager had to be called to sort out late rooms on the day I checked in Pool staff are far than helpful if it comes to anything more than spending money
Pool is good but no policing of reserved sun beds. Notices everywhere that glass is not permitted by the pool (which is fine) but they are happy to sell large glass bottles of water at extortionate prices Don't expect to be offered tea/coffee at breakfast … you have to beckon a waitress over when they decide to look at the guests — except when a manger is visible and they all appear to look helpful —
There are far better 5 star hotels in the area I would suggest looking at them before making a decision Perhaps the general manager could also make a visit to them to see what is expected from a five star hotel I have seen/listened to many unhappy guets in the reception area and many guests are sitting with duty managers to express dissatisfaction We have stayed in many 5 star hotels but this one is without doubt the worst.

Really enjoyed our stay here. Bedrooms were quiet at night, the pool wasn't too busy during the day as there wasn't a lot of children about. Everything was very clean and well looked after. The lifts were busy though, we found stairs but they were for staff rather than guests. Breakfast was ok with a decent choice. We went out to eat at night time but the evening buffets looked good.

This is a beautiful palatial grand hotel. Staff are very helpful and friendly ready to answer any questions. Location is quiet and a good uphill walk to local amenities. However luxury cars which are airconditioned are always ready for you. Rooms are spacious but if you are a non smoker you can smell smoke from the balcony when people have smoked on them leaving the doors open. Otherwise everything you need except body lotion which is always a nice touch. Being picky because it was a fantastic special experience. Lotion arrived on our last day. So all in all a great hotel.

Rooms, leisure & layout areas certainly 5 star. Lounge and dining staff are, let's say "laid back". Not 5 or 4 star level. Self service/buffet breakfast excellent including porridge. Evening buffet o/k and a bit tired. Front face of building requires freshening up. Room prices are 5 star. On balance probably stay there again if we travel to Malta. 7.5 to 8 out 10.

Beautiful hotel, strategic location, nice pool and mythical breakfast, according to the standards of a 5 star I think the cleanliness of the bathroom in the room could be improved.

The best 5 star hotel in Malta!

Lovely staff hotel is a bit tired in need of a bit of of work.

Good hotel, staff is mostly friendly, and swimming pool is crowded.

From the outside, it makes not the best impression, the room could z. T. Also once again brought up to scratch. Service and facilities but 5* value. And that is not as expensive compared with what on the island-4*Hotel called. Beach towels, underground Parking free of charge. Where's the else? Highly recommended.

This should not be a five star hotel, not by any means. The hotel needs renovation, inside and out and new, friendly staff! I had multiple light-bulbs (those still exist? ) stop working in the time of my stay, and although room service clearly realized that (they simply turned the next light on) they did not get them replaced. There was also a wall outlet ripped out with cables exposed. Also, the bathroom has seen better days. That being said, I had one of the better rooms, I heard tales of the low priced rooms that seemed to be even worse. However, what bugged me most was how the staff behaved. From the reception desk at check in (requiring a 50€ deposit per night that is still blocked on my credid card after checkout) that was not very friendly when being asked any questions, nobody was really helpful, and at breakfast the people that showed one to the table were super unfriendly, waving hectically to hurry and sit down. Also, don't expect to be leaving the hotel easily, after a lot of steps you will have to cross a quite busy street, with no traffic lights or walk ways. But at least afterwards it's only 5 minutes to the city center. This hotel wants to be high class, but acts a lot like a simple tourist joint. Whoever gave it their five stars rating has not visited in a while. But Malta, and especially Valletta is great, go visit, but stay somewhere else.

Like the Grand Hotel Budapest in the movie. Unfortunately in the latter years. Good things: the location, setting and grounds. Bad things: had to request they replaced the used towels from previous guests, exterior needs work, reception offers hotel cab to centre for €15 for 1km and refuse to call or even provide the number for normal taxi in a thunder storm.

Currently staying at this hotel. The rooms are well appointed and have all you'd expect from a 5 star including effective air-con. Located 5 mins from central Valletta. Food is excellent. Great breakfast choice with habour view. Dinner buffet is good but also consider Valletta Waterside which is a 15-20 minute walk away with a great buzz and wider choice of food (beware there are over 120 steps back though unless you get a cab). Indoor and outdoor pools and habour-side sun deck but loses a star for lack of steam room and poor gym.

Nice pool and closeness to old valletta which is very nice. Far from city centre and away from shops. Food and service are not great. Rooms are basic. Air conditioning sounds like a plane taking off. Definitely not worth the price.

A very nice hotel with a great location. Close to downtown and the bus. Ideal for going out in Valletta or visit the island. Very friendly and impeccable facilities. Breakfast continental good but lacking a bit of variety (same every day) and the tail to be served an omelet or waffle (a single post and cook). Beautiful indoor and outdoor pools. Small "beach" (a little overused term! ) which also allows a small bath of sea. The rooms are large and well kept with a balcony (we were on the 3rd).
