Brilliant time, they accommodated really well to 80 of us (a class of university students). Would recommend, and the breakfast was fab.

Had such a great 9 day stay at this place. I'm not a frequent hostel guest, but this one was surprisingly super comfy, clean and felt like home. Location is amazing, main street, old town, bus stop for day tours and airport shuttle just around the corner. Thanks for having us and helping us around.

Nice and friendly Atmosphäre great bar easy to find and possible to park the car up the road for free. I had a private room which was spacious and nice.

The lobby and bar area are so beautiful and comfortable. You instantly relax. We had a king room with terrace overlooking the bay. It was so nice! Very basic but very clean and comfy with high class touches. I cannot say enough about the staff. So friendly and laid back and helpful! They truly made our trip shine! Would 100% stay here again!

Fantastic place to stay. Very helpful and happy staff, the bedroom was beautiful with a massive bed and balcony. Perfect location for Reykjavík and getting out of the city straight onto the motorway for the golden circle etc. Thank you very much for the stay — would definitely recommend.

Very clean, pleasant accommodations. Staff was friendly, and helpful if you needed any sort of assistance. Great place to stay, walking distance to most shops and bars with one inside of the Hostel itself. I would definitely stay there again, but would probably inquire into getting a private room.

The location is really great — walking distance to the city center, but also one of the main stops for any tours/excursions that include ground transportation. Beds were clean and comfy though the photos online make the (hostel) rooms look a bit more luxury than they actually are. The bathrooms (specifically the showers) were not great — tiny shower stalls with vinyl curtains that you have to try not to touch. Stayed for about 5 days and I don't think it was cleaned once while I was there. I would advise against including breakfast when you book — it wasn't bad, but it was very basic and pretty much the same every day. Great bar up front to have a nightcap or, in my case, wait out a snow storm. For the price and location, I'd still recommend it, but loses one star for the shower situation.

Nice hotel just off of main street. The hotel is older however very well maintained. The craft beer selection downstairs is great!

Excellent well-situated hostel next to bus station and pick-up point for the many tours. Pleasant helpful staff, clean facilities though kitchen not well-equipped (so we borrowed from another floor's kitchen! ). Dorm rooms have plenty of space in them with individual lockers (take own key). Recommended.

The cheapest hostel in town, on the other hand it only cleans once a day and it's really not enough with the amount of people present.

This is a great hostel and hotel. Good accommodation with decent beds, the bathrooms we’re not always so clean though. The common areas are really great to hang out, good bar and restaurant for good prices. I had my lobster soup payed twice I saw on my bank account a day later and there was no hustle to get my money back. I’ll be back.

The hostel is quite large, but it has all the services as dining room, restaurant, the place is located near the center, and the price is reasonable.

I stayed here for multiple nights at the beginning and end of my trip around Iceland. Hlemmur Square is one of if not the best place I stayed. The prices are affordable. The rooms are clean and well kept. There are shared washrooms and showers that are also well maintained. The main floor of the building serves as a bistro during the day so there is always a lively atmosphere. Beyond all that the location is incredible, so close to the Reykjavik city center and sitting right on the main shopping street. To top it off the staff were incredible. They all put in a great effort to make my stay as great as it was and I would 100% recommend anyone I know to stay here.

I just had a very bad experience. My daughter stayed at this hotel with her class, and I asked the hotel to send her an urgent message. I gave the name of my country and the city as well as the name of the school, I even spelled the name of the school and the receptionist refused to look for it saying that I should contact the group leader myself. I find this attitude unacceptable.

The lobby, bar, bistro and lounge areas are wonderful. But the rooms, kitchens, bathrooms are yucky. At least four outlets in the 12 bed room didn't work. At least two of the bed lamps didn't work. The kitchen was a dirty disaster from people being pigs and not cleaning up properly. There were fabric seat cushions in the kitchen that we're practically black with stains and grime. There was a two person shower with dingy curtains to separate yourself. The toilet room has about four small stalls and the door to the room can hardly be opened if anyone is inside. There are drawers under the beds for your luggage, and they all seemed to have garbage or gunk in them. The desk staff were wonderfully friendly and the lobby/lounge areas around the desk were clean and comfortable. Beer and wine at the bar were good and the bistro area has maybe a dozen tables for restaurant food service.

I loved it, we were out of school. In a room of twelve, can be a lot. But otherwise the bar on the ground floor is very appreciable with a good atmosphere and good beers. We are also close to the city center and a bus stop is placed right in front and 5 minutes from the ocean. I agree and recommend.

The hostel is very well located, not more than 10 minutes from the new cathedral, and is also on the liveliest street of commercial and restaurant shops. The rooms have bunk beds but they are spacious, and the common areas are very cozy. The site is perfect in value for money.

There are good mattresses, the bunks are high so if you sleep below you feel no burden, there are great drawers with the possibility to put padlocks for all the members of the room and a sofa, a table and a sink in each room. The cleanliness of the bathroom was very good and the kitchen (there is one on each floor) was only dirty when some guest had left it like this (but cleaned it a couple of times a day). The guests respected the food we left in the fridge. The staff are attentive and help you search for information about sites and they will lend you the hostel phone to call you if you need it. The location is very good, it is close to the sites you see in Reykjavik and there is a bus stop from the excursions right at the door. The facilities are not modern but they fulfill their functions perfectly. It also has several living rooms where you meet people.
The cold water from the kitchen on our floor did not work and with the hot it was hard to scrub as it was really very hot. Maybe some chairs are missing in the kitchen and everyone picks up and cleans their stuff. It has no parking although you can park very close without having to pay the Parkimetro.

Nice facilities, large shower and clean bathrooms. The staff is super friendly and above is very close to several interesting points of the city. A great success staying here.

Welcome and staff very nice and has listening. Spacious dorms. Comfortable and clean sleeping. The toilet showers and sinks are ok. In the heart of the city center ideal for discovering reykjavick. Bus stop to airport just outside the hostel. Many restaurants nearby.

Very helpful and friendly staff, ample common areas, kitchens and bathrooms available on each floor and dorms equipped with electrical outlets (1 per bed). Very central location and low prices.

The staff were incredibly kind helpful, I arrived 8 hrs too early for check in and they let me stay in the socializing room while I waited for a bed and allowed me to store my things if I had wanted to leave. The entire place is clean and it’s got a great community feel with pretty good social vibes. Was able to connect with people and get groups to travel with and go out with. The bar is nice but not cheap, I recommend buying alcohol in the airport or liquor stores!

An amazing place to stay for are grip to Iceland. Good be quility and nice rooms which all much bigger then expected. The ground floor social area and shared kitchens allow for conversation between groups. A great place for food down stairs and good breakfast. This only problem is the few drunk users and the occasional broken bed light. Would come again.

Clean hostel with comfortable beds. It's relatively affordable by Icelandic standards and the front desk is staffed 24 hours (good to know in case you're coming in off a late night flight). It's a good location, close to lots of the sites, and the shuttle stops right outside!

First off—I had a very hard time finding the entrance. There is not much signage to direct you to the reception. Also upon entering the building I wasn’t even sure if it was the correct hostel. The rooms—nothing special. I had one bed in a four bedroom dorm. Large open area. Small windows with limited airflow. Hot room. Semi comfortable beds. The rooms and floors in the rooms could be cleaned a little more often. The kitchen is ABSOLUTELY disgusting. I would not want to eat off of any of the silverware or plates. There is food everywhere, most of it probably expired. Very smelly. Bathrooms were dirty and cramped. The soap to wash your hands. I didn’t use showers but if they were anything like the bathroom m, I wouldn’t of used them anyways. It’s a perfect location to bus pick up if that’s what you need. Location is good for restaurants, grocery stores and souvenir shops. Front desk staff was nice and very helpful. However, I would not sleep here again. You pay for what you get.

The place is good if you want a hostel that isn't full of party youth. However the place desperately needs to be fix up. Our door knob was wobblely. My bed was broken so I slept in a slop. Plus more. But I liked the Icelandic dinner and the breakfast buffet was good. The kitchen has the basics, and the beds were comfy. Location is amazing. Shuttle pick up is outside and the staff are amazing. Overall I would recommend it.

Nice hostel, ideally located in the center of Reykjavik with a bus stop for tours not a meter from the front door, and a museum and supermarket directly across the street. Spacious, clean rooms; and luxurious showers. Nice common room with a few board games, and polite and helpful staff.

The Hotel/hostel is in the prime place to explore Reykjavik, and for pickup for all the tours. It's within walking distance to the main attractions within the city, or hop on the city bus or tour operators buses right outside to explore further afield. I stayed in a very warm & comfortable hotel room, with a balcony overlooking the main street. The staff are welcoming & helpful. Prices at the hotel were reasonable, giving that Iceland is not a cheap place to visit. They offer a square meal at 7pm which is good value for money. I pre-booked the breakfast which was tasty and filling. I can't recommend more highly the location & comfort of the Hllemur. New year's eve WOW!

Great location for a meal or drinks. We ate the chicken enchiladas and they were extremely good! They came with nachos too which was an added bonus. Certainly not shy on their filling as it was stuffed to the brim. Lots of choice here with various type of cuisine so something for everyone. They even have a dessert place serving liquid nitrogen ice cream!

I enjoyed my 8 night stay here. You cannot ask for a better location — close to all major attractions and RIGHT beside the city buses. Shopping and restaurants were right at the doorstep. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I found all the rooms and facilities were clean. I only gave it four stars because on the last day there was NO toilet paper in the bathrooms the whole day! But that’s a first world problem if there ever was one. Overall, I recommend this hostel to anyone coming to Reykjavík.

Great location, in front of bus pick up point. We stayed in room 313, basic but clean and very affordable. Breakfast very good and entertaining… hope the Czech guy behind the bar on his first day has recorvered from burning his hands to pour a cup of tea for me! :)

Fantastic location, right in the centre of Reykjavik. We rented a car and overnight parking is just outside the hotel on the road (although pay and display between 8am and 6pm). The room is spacious and the bed comfortable. Haven't tried the restaurant yet, but the menu does look really good. The staff are very friendly and very helpful, going out of their way to help us enjoy our stay in Iceland and get the best out of our trip. The blue lagoon is only a 30 minute drive, the airport is only 45 and the Golden Circle is not far away. Despite all of these great features, the price is very low. We stayed in the hotel rooms (there is also hostel accommodation available) and the price was very reasonable. Just beware of the local food and drink prices though, it's an expensive place to visit.

Reception is always helpful. Perfect place to stay Central. Everything is mostly walking distance and great vibe of people. Loads of free food. I stayed in all female form and the view from the huge windows were amazing!

Really cool hostel located in the heart of downtown Reykjavik. It's got a restaurant and a bar located in the lobby area and there's always people milling about and meeting and talking to each other. They also let you check your luggage if you arrive early in the morning from the airport (like most American travelers I imagine) so you don't have to carry around your luggage all morning and afternoon while you're exploring the city because the check in time is 3pm.

I stayed in one of the 14 person bedrooms which was a surprisingly nice place. They have a good system set up, the appearance and comfort was better than I expected. I am a light sleeper and we had some very loud snorers in my room which is definitely something in hindsight I should've anticipated. Overall, I don't think the $10 price difference between this place and an airb&b was worth it, but if you're looking to meet a lot of new people it may be.

Location was perfect! Staff were very helpful and sincere making a great visit. Excellent craft beer bar in lobby with daily happy hour. We stayed on 5th floor hotel area. Comfortable accommodations — it is not a full service hotel so no coffee in regular rooms although coffee daily in lobby. Minibar/fridge, down comforters & pillows. Terrace was nice to enjoy morning coffee and evening drinks. Very easy walking into downtown. Good value and great place to stay.

Location is perfect and the staff is really friendly, amazing breakfast every morning. But the kitchen is not clean at all, yesterday night I cleaned all the cooking top because I hate to cook in a messy and dirty place. They should put someone in the kitchen to check if everyone cleans after himself and say to do not scream as the room 304 is next to the kitchen and if someone scream we cant sleep at all. 2 showers for women (3rd floor) divided by curtains, one is ok the other one is quite weak. The toilet are almost clean but there is not toilet paper, only small tissue… o cmon! I hate this I want normal toilet paper!

A few down point would be the men shower, I stayed on 3rd floor there are two showers in men shower room, seperate by curtains. One of the shower was kind of loosen screws with water leeking under the tap and the other are just witha weak water flows. In the bed room 304, a 10 mix domitory, the coat hanger fell off screws. I have been here for three nights, it still has not been fixed.
Although overall, I enjoyed my stay at Hlemmur Square, the atmosphere here was kind of a come and go business hostel and passing through travellers. The bed was confortble, though I got the upper one, it's quite high which made the climbing a little difficult. If the frame is made of wood would be more pleasant I think.

Large rooms, depending on the season, or whether it's a British holiday, the hostel maybe almost empty, or completely packed with schoolchildren. There's a nice restaurant and lounge area on the first floor, and it's right across the street from a bus station.

Great, except for the kitchen. Room are nice and clean. The beds are very comfortable. The kitchen amenities are pretty bad. No coffee maker. One beat up frying pan, hardly any utensils. I also wish there wasn't a constant glowing blue night-light in the rooms. It's in a good location however and walking distance to most things in the city.

Stayed for 4 nights, nice place for solo traveller, cheap prices, location good, it has a kitchen with the basics (to save some money in food outside), 10-15 minutes walking to main street.

Rooms are nice and big but we were appauled by the lack of cleanliness in the bathrooms and the kitchen. Upon arrival we waited behind a customer who was really just taking his time at booking through the reception. We stood there behind him without any acknowledgement from the receptionist. Not a "hello" not a "wont be long" or anything. 15 minutes went by and finally when they were done she didnt even mention a "sorry for keeping you waiting ". Its not like I need to hear these this but it seemed she simply didnt care and it didnt give us a warm welcoming. Also I would like to mention on level 3 right outside the kitchen we found a wet towel laying flat on the floor which absolutely stunk and there were 3-4 shower heads and pipes which looked as though they were recently replaced just resting against the wall in the corridor with no tradesman to be seen. Not really enjoying this place so far.

Good hostel for meeting new people. Perfect for solo travellers. Kitchen with all the necessities so you can cook (Iceland can get expensive. ) Good location on the main road. Chill vibe down in the bar. Across the street from a grocery store and the airport shuttles pick and drop you off right at the door. Hostel reception was super helpful! Helped me arrange a northern lights tour and a car rental.

A hostel is avarage, but very well located and very good price. Ideal if you're not very demanding and do not want to spend much.

We arrived here around eleven thirty pm which is never a good idea for hostels. The front desk guy was cool… but I wasn't too happy when he said 'you're in room 102, I think I saw a couple open beds in there'. The ~12 person room was packed and there were no clearly open beds. We had to sneak through the place rearranging people's bags to finally get a bed. Also, the bathroom smelled like a dirty diaper covered in burnt hair. Reykjavik backpackers was much better.

This was the most that I've ever paid for a hostel, but it was worth it, especially considering that it's quite cheap by Icelandic standards. Waking up this morning, I noticed that someone had puked all over one of the toilets, but they must do a great job cleaning up, because there will be no trace of the mess later. Well situated near a metro line and along the main shopping street, which takes you right into the city center.

Nice and clean dorms, great atmosphere, helpful staff, good location. And a great selection of beers at the bar!

Everyone talks about KEX but I have to say I was so impressed with the atmosphere, the employees, and the accommodations here. Extremely clean. Less rowdy crowd, the perfect place if you're here to get away and not to party every night. All of the reception and bar staff were very knowledgeable and had answers to questions I hadn't even asked yet. Listed as charging for linen but it was supplied at no cost. At least when I visited in April which was a plus. Best price on craft beer in the area at happy hour. You won't find viking or gull on tap here.

The best hostel / hotel that I've stayed in for many, many years — very clean, friendly and lovely dorm beds. Only problem was finding the place. It would be good if the sign outside didn't just say "Hlemmur Square", but instead had Hotel or Hostel in the name. Or maybe a second sign advertising it. I thought the Hlemmur Square sign was just a sign saying that this was the name of the bus station square.

Beware the budget rooms. We were given a budget room and ended up in the hostel part. The room and bathroom were small, no TV and old amenities. It clearly didn't reflect the price we paid.

Klaus (the owner) is a great man! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the accommodations are better than any hostel we have ever stayed at (we are a well traveled group of 5). In fact, it's better than most hotels. On top of that, it's a party every night if you want.

Good Selection of Beer. It truly captures the essence of the location.
