One of the most recently invented and familiar of the Shaolin historical narratives is a story that claims that the Indian monk Bodhidharma, the supposed founder of Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism, introduced boxing into the monastery as a form of exercise around a. D. 525. This story first appeared in a popular novel,  The Travels of Lao T’san, published as a series in a literary magazine in 1907. This story was quickly picked up by others and spread rapidly through publication in a popular contemporary boxing manual, Secrets of Shaolin Boxing Methods, and the first Chinese physical culture history published in 1919. As a result, it has enjoyed vast oral circulation and is one of the most “sacred” of the narratives shared within Chinese and Chinese-derived martial arts. That this story is clearly a twentieth-century invention is confirmed by writings going back at least 250 years earlier, which mention both Bodhidharma and martial arts but make no connection between the two.

This is an awesome experience with the kung fu guys. I liked it very much. My experience is un-imaginable. L saw the masters whose each cell is kung fu. One of them personally showed me some of his best items. Iliked their kicks, punches. They also showed flips and some other mind-blowing movements.

The temple itself is beautiful but honestly nothing special. Too commercial and full of tourists for my liking. The show included in the price knows little and the story that is the background is only spoken in Chinese of course. If you plan to go there, take the whole day because it's really worth getting on the cable car and taking a walk on Mount Song. Fantastic views and walk to get to the temple at peak quite challenging, mainly due to the truckload of steps LoL.

Very nice location. Great buildings. Impressively I found the cemetery with all the steles. Would have the impression that it is very commercial. Designed for tourism.
Very easy to reach. We travelled from Luoyang (Hotel Peony) by coach about 2 hours.

I have not gone there but I want to go there and live there forever I am mad about martial arts I want to lear it… By going there its my dream and I will fullfil it.

I love kung-fu and gupt vidya like kundalini.

A very nice mountain temple, good for hiking and walking around. It's not very overtly kung fu-y, or at least the parts we visited were not. That wasn't really a disappointment to me, but I can see how it could be for some people.

Most important historical sites. Beautiful and amazing. The building is thousands years old but well preserved. The shaolin kungfu is the world best martial arts. Ancient history with many attraction for tourist. The price is reasonable. Enjoy the kungfu show.

Dreamed of getting into Shaolin as a child when watching Kung fu militants. An unusual place. The temple itself is quite kommercializirovalsja: all for sale, grandmothers with Rosary. But in any case, there is something to see. Especially inspired by the rise in the cave Bodhidharma-this is probably the most amazing of all the experience. The cave is high on the mountain and you need to overcome many-many-many steps to climb there. Having overcome a rise you get in a small cell. In which Bodhidharma spent several years meditating, turning to the wall. Very powerful feeling. Then you can climb up to the top of the mountain, and see the whole Shaolin.
