Refreshing museum concept that brings new life and curiosity to the same old blueprint of what a museum 'should' be. Some things you can only touch with your eyes, but most things you can experience and engage with in other physical ways — a nice change for a more tactile generation. If you're ever down in Hobart, then this is a must see. Give yourself from mid-morning to late afternoon to explore the whole crazy thing (and throw in a classy lunch while there, too).

A modern museum/gallery done well. Quite an eclectic mix of old and new artworks in a range of different styles that never felt disjointed or conflicting. Great use of technology in both the installations and the incredibly useful GPS-based iPhone guide. The MONA grounds are also gorgeous. Catch the ferry in — a beautiful journey up the river — and make sure you spend some time walking around after your museum visit.

What a great attraction for Tasmania. The building itself was spectacular and the banter on signs and information points was hilarious! I loved the old art more than the new but that all was appreciated! It would have been good if there was some parenting facilities as we had a infant on board and it was difficult to feed and change her.

Thought provoking gallery, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. We took the Mona Roma, standard tickets (should be noted that you can still sit inside on a standard ticket) the trip takes only 20mins with amazing views along the way. The gallery staff were friendly and helpful, as we had missed a few works. We ate at both the cafe and restaurant, and the food is delicious and we'll presented.

Exotic and fun to see! Great architecture, great art! A must do undoubtedly. Give yourself a minimum of 4 hours to walk and enjoy this place. The staff was always attentive and nice. And don't let yourself intimidate by some reviews about been too extreme, go and judge it yourself!

The best Arts experience I have ever had. While all the exhibits will not be for everyone's taste, it will all make you think about what is art. Was fortunate enough to meet the owner David Walsh in the wine bar. He was happy for a chat and I thanked him for creating this place. Nobody can describe what the place is, as it is different to every person who visits. All I can say is that if you are in Hobart, it is a MUST SEE. It is even worth going to Hobart just to visit MONA. I will be back, as you cannot soak it all in one visit.

Very neat modern art museum. Enjoyed the ride to MONA on the hyper-foil, albeit a bit pricey for the whole experience As for the museum itself, I wish there were even more interactive exhibits. It would also be nice if they aren’t so reliant on “edgy/controversial” exhibits. Definitely worthwhile doing lunch at the FARO restaurant. Go a bit early to secure a window seat! A must-do regardless while in Hobart.

I can't believe I have never 'rated' MONA here on Google before. MONA is truly next-level. In fact, it would be a revolutionary development in almost any place in the world but because it is situated in the Northern Suburbs of Hobart, it's an incredible sight. MONA is outstanding for many reasons. Firstly, the staff here are truly excellent. There are many, and you will never be out of range from one of their knowledgeable staff. Of course, the art here is superb as well. But it's more just about the total experience. The dining, cafe, and outdoor seating options are all world-class and it is just a memorable experience and a must-do in Hobart.

Just great. Exhibitions and surroundings.

It's a museum of old and new art major part of the the museum is underground. Don't get surprised if you see some of the strangest weirdest thing you have ever seen in your life. Sometimes you would scratch your head wondering what hell is this place but believe me it's a life time experience. It has something you will never forget in your life. My favourite one is Hound in the Hunt. A must visit place in Hobart.

One of the best galleries I’ve ever been to. No labels, and a very well organized AV guide. Doesn’t take itself too seriously but also, if you want, contains interviews with artists and context that’s really useful. Some really touching and thoughtful pieces are here. It avoids the old tropes or lots of galleries and is short enough that you could have a great experience in a morning or an afternoon. The ferry ride over is charming as well, I’d recommend. Great views of Hobart. The cafe isn’t over priced for what you get and there are chickens. What more could you want?

A must see place if you’re in Hobart. It puzzled me, amazed me and shocked me. But always made me think and reflect. Loved the experience. The view from the entrance over the river was amazing. I took three young kids with me and they liked having the audio guides. However there were some exhibits that were a too much for them which I avoided.

An adult's wonderland! I can't imagine going to Hobart and not visiting. We had experienced a great deal of rainy weather around our visit and thought this was simply going to be a good indoor activity to keep us busy but it turned out to be a highlight of our trip. Food and drinks are fabulous. Great escape for your imagination.

This museum is Hobarts must see attraction. It’s only $22 to get in & $20 for the bot trip which has a bar and comfy seats. The museum though is one of the best, quirky museums I’ve been too. Lots of cool things to explore, very polite staff & fun & interactive for all ages. A few exhibits are not kid friendly, you might have to explain a few of them, but it’s worth it for the adults among us. Highly recommend. Also check out the men’s toilet downstairs with the mirrors. Very interesting perspective.

Very good museums, architectural styles and collections give us a variety of sensory shocks, restaurants and wines are very unexpected, it is highly recommended to buy Ferries 55 Australian dollars VIP tickets, onboard meals are also very exquisite and delicious!

We spent the afternoon at MONA and it was well worth the visit. Amazing guided experience. They have left no detail out with thought provoking pieces in residence. The cafe was also stunning. We had a cafe in the sun with an amazing view of the water. We caught the ROMA back to town. Very easy to visit and plenty of lifts for easy access of the venue too.

Art Museum, this museum is so good. Love those art and craft in here. Spend 3 hours in 1 level, so many art pieces to see, so many crafts and information. After 3 hours, went upstairs for a break, there is a cafe in here. Food taste good, love my cake and milkshake. I should have spend 2 days here but we had only schedule for 1 day. Lots to see, yet not enough time. I would love to visit the museum again.

Lodge is great, the modern wind is overwhelming. But there were two big spiders in the bedroom at night, and reception left work at 10:30 in the evening …

MONA is what every art museum should strive to be: evocative, interactive, and delightful. Certainly the museum has excellent pieces on display, but it’s the experience of being surprised and shocked after every room and in each hallway that really makes coming here worthwhile. We had planned to stay for three hours and ended up staying six. The included “O” guides themselves made the art come alive and served to remedy one of the biggest problems modern art faces: a failure to communicate to average viewers. With the guide in hand as an art teacher and interpreter, I felt for the first time in a modern art museum I could appreciate what the artist was trying to do and why, as opposed to being baffled that said piece was considered art at all.

Make sure you allow plenty of time to walk through the exhibitions. It expands over quite a few levels and is recommended you start at the lowest level and make your way back to the ground level. Also there is a quaint little cafe outside for those who need a caffeine fix or a quick bite.

Definitely the best thing in Hobart! Been to so many art galleries and this one is unexpectedly Excellent — it's a justified hype! Very impressive esp in the mental stimulation stakes… a refreshing and awesome creative asset much needed in Oz! Loved eating on the outdoor green tables and the view from the restaurant too. Great wine list and delicious Yuzu aperitif. The complex is also nice to visit. Ferry ride a bit expensive but understandable… comfy seats and the sheep are a nice touch. It's a nice leisurely half day or day out for sure… a must visit when visiting Hobart and probably the most interesting new building in Oz for me to date right down to the capsule glass elevators!

Mona was mostly as good as we had hoped and sometimes better. We booked the ferry and entry online at the museum's website, which worked well and delivered all the tickets as a single pdf. Because it was a cold, windy and very wet day we didn't get to explore the outdoor art but our seven hour stay would have been too short if we'd been able to do that. The building is extraordinary and the art varied. A multimedia guide is available free since there are no labels on any of the works. On the lowest level there is a bar, couches and live music around lunchtime. A busy cafe on the top floor serves hot and cold food from pies to salads. When we visited living artwork Tim Steiner, whose back tattoo is on display, was talking about his life in intimate sessions ($15 a person). This was an unexpected highlight of the visit.

Pretty cool place constantly evolving with new exhibits. The Museum of Everything had an eclectic assortment of art. The food available there is amazing and the wines (go do a $10 wine tasting) are to die for.

What an experience! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Hobart or just generally Australia. We spent time stretching from a Ferry Ride at 11:00 AM until departing at 5:00. It gave us time to walk through in a relaxed format and spend time at the wine bar, which is worth the stop. As it gets built out I would say you could definitely spend the whole afternoon here or even more. It challenges you to wonder about art, wonder about the motives of David Walsh, ponder why you would watch a piece of art actually poop, so many questions.

It is MONA, it doesn't have a high rollers Casino yet and it certainly has no vile Pokies. You will not be same after your visit. Visit by Boat and if you can afford it try the 'Posh Pit'. The heavy metal kitchen food is terrific. The Seasonal Rose on a hot day is better by the Carafe sitting on the lawn enjoying the market. Make sure you leave plenty of time to see everything as there can be queues for some exhibits. Catch the lift down to the Void Bar to start. Grab a cocktail, stare at the sandstone wall, acclimatise to your surroundings then start your journey to the surface.

Fabulous and intriguing art at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Walked through the 27 rooms for the exhibition 'Museum of Everything', and it was very much thought provoking. Some odd things, some moving, some beautiful and some infuriating. Just what a museum should be.

MONA is a stunning and must see museum. The iPod guides was so helpful in allowing me to understand the artist and the story behind their artwork. Currently the museum of everything is running and I really enjoyed listening to the commentator for this exhibition. He made art very easy to understand (for a novice like me), funny and not pretentious at all.

I've been to a lot of museums by now, but this was certainly the best so far. Every piece of art in there tells a story all for itself. The way everything's shown and how the museum has been built is just astonishing. I can't say more than I LOVED IT.

Had a massively good time here; was at the museum as a part of the MOFO festival. First piece of advice, regardless of when you go to the museum: wear comfortable shoes. This is a labyrinth of a museum and goes on forever, come well equipped and you'll be fine. Has some lovely permanent exhibitions, though my personal favourite was the temporary exhibit, 'On the Origin of Art'. If you're in Hobart go here. It's well worth it.

Enticing, thought provoking, confronting. You can fall in love with the building alone. Then there's the exquisite artwork, friendly knowledgeable staff and top notch food — makes for a glorious day out!

Only managed to have two hours here, but should have stayed for a full day! Full of so many artworks, intriguing pieces etc. I'm not a fan of museums or art galleries but this was something else. Make sure to take the ferry for the full experience, and if you can pay for the premium ticket on the ferry.

A Museum of contemporary art disappointing, visibly primarily designed to shock, rather than to open new avenues or promote original artists. The relatively high price of the entry, without significant reduction for the younger ones, confirms the impression of disinterest in the expectations of the public. The café closing at 4 pm or the late arrival of the ferry from the museum liaising with the city centre, leaving the passengers waiting on the quay, are still two signs of the little interest that the management of this museum carries to its visitors. The architecture of the place is on the other hand worthy of interest.

Certainly worth a visit, important the structure, extremely modern, some "works of art" were not well understood by me and other members of the group. Adjoining there is a nice bar. All very modern, on the other hand the museum is only 6 years old, you can also receive by mail the information about what you saw through the visit with the special device with headphones.

Likely the most unique art museum on earth. It it the private collection of one very unique man and the theme is " sex and death". Also none of the works are marked, although you are given a iPhone that will give you all the info that you want if you choose. I found it really added to the experience as you just looked at things and liked them or not. I did use the iPhone but not nearly as much as I expected. Some of the work could be considered disturbing but those areas are marked. The collection is eclectic to the extreme. You will either love it or hate it. I didn't talk to a single person who had an intermediate view. So it is worth seeing just for that as it is rare to see a museum on this scale that is based only on one person's taste. If you go take the fast ferry from Hobart and go out on the deck. There not called fast for nothing and if you hate it at least you will have a fun boat ride.

Excellent site of the Museum. Very good collection, excellent Pinot Noir!

An indispensable place for lovers of contemporary art but transgressive. Highly recommended, its exhibitions, its restaurants and the location. Can also be reached by bike by following an old via train. It is very well signposted. But, a bus or a ferry to take you for $20.
