Review of Hilton Cairns 5*

Nov 2014 Terrible for a top rated hotel, Arrived at 10am, nowhere to have a coffee. Room was OK good views 3rd floor, Staff were helpful and pleasant, pool was beautiful, that was about where the good ended. No bar until 1230 room service only, even the water machine was hot and broken and not replaced. Everything now seems to cater for asians only, breakfast had tasteless peaches, pears apricots and pawpaw as if frozen and rethawed, fresh fruits were fine, scrambled eggs tasted as if powdered, poached were swimming in vinegar water and hard, fried were rubber, only improved slightly in last two days. Bacon was overcooked at low temp, Plenty of asian noodles rice etc etc, No white bread, all fancy loaves with one of those bad toasters which either burns or produces hot bread. Not a pleasant breakfast. Housekeeping forgot our bathmat (necessary as only a halfglass over bath with overhead shower) our friends towels disappeared completely. Mondos restaurant was painful too, asian food was good, rib fillet was tasteless, obviously frozen, quick thawed and then grilled sent it back and settled for ice cream. The menu was obviously asian oriented, not aimed at Aust or caucasian tastes. Changed to baby barramundi next night, so filled with lemon could not taste barra at all. No minibar in room or even water in fridge. They cocked up the Wi-Fi twice and it was turned of at cockcrow the morning of departure, although checkout was not till eleven, glad I was not on urgent business. Checked out at 11am pick up was at 1pm, No coffee, No bar. This was not even 2nd class facility and could not recommend to friends, luckily we have learned to use hotels for basically sleeping and little else.
