Just spent three nights here, taking advantage of the special Winter Break rate, and enjoyed our time there. The locals are very friendly if you take the time to speak to them, and the staff are very attentative and again friendly. The food is plentiful, and good old fashioned pub fare with some nice specials also, was served quickly and hot. We ate the three nights in the bar, as felt that had the atmosphere where the dining room was to us a little bit lifeless.
Rooms serve their purpose, comfortable and everything that you need, including an extra portable heater just I case it's extra chilly, but as the wife said, they could do with a bit of a women's touch!
If you like an establishment to be prim and proper and somewhere to dress up to go to, then this may not be the place for you, but if you're looking for somewhere homely and somewhere you don't have to tread about on eggshells, then you'll enjoy it.
We'd certainly return without a doubt

Thanks for a couple of lovely afternoons in the bar whilst visiting. A lovely pub full of character and lovely staff and friendly locals. Really enjoyed it — thank you. Joey loved it too

Lovely place, lovely, friendly staff and locals. We were made to feel so welcome. Our dogs were treated so lovely, they loved the fuss and lying in front of the lovely log fire. Looking forward to going back for longer next time. Great food too, huge portions!

Came for relaxing weekend and Jan special offer. So quiet just what we wanted. Took our dog room cosy and clean. We ordered burgerand chips and this was spot on. Good glass pinot grigio and friendly staff.

A nice friendly village pub with a good choice of beers. Food is reasonable for pub grub. Friendly staff and you can take dogs in.

5th visit here, including 1 overnight stay. Super friendly staff, excellent beer, delicious food and a brilliant atmosphere in one of the most beautiful villages in the Dales. Highly recommended!

Lovely little bar with lovely real ales and friendly staff and people

Long walk from West Burton to Aysgarth and back. Stopped in for tea and a gin and tonic. Cozy small pub. Friendly staff and a surprise cat. Quite lovely place. Highly recommend a stop in.

We went with our 2 children and cocker spaniel. Staff were very friendly and helpful, food was lovely and a proper dog friendly pub with about 6 dogs all well behaved chilling under tables!

Really poor service, unfriendly and rude staff, very average food that had clearly been heated up in a microwave (it was all served within 5 mins of ordering). RESPONSE TO OWNERS RESPONSE No, we ordered jacket potatoes, with chicken curry and another with prawns. We also ordered 2 kids meals — 1 was chicken nuggets, the other was meat balls. The quality of the kids meals was really terrible. My 3 year old wouldn’t eat the meat balls and I could understand why — really bad quality meat, with a tasteless sauce. The chicken nuggets weren’t much better. The service was poor because the lady behind the bar with long white hair and glasses was very rude. It was midday and the pub was pretty much empty except for a couple outside having drinks. My children were a bit whingey for which I apologised. Whilst choosing a table we started placing our order. The kids (aged 5 and 3) wanted to switch tables ONCE whilst we were stood at the bar ordering drinks. At the end of the drinks order I asked if it was okay to add an extra kids meal (we’d only ordered one initially as we have young children who don’t eat a great deal). At this point the lady behind the bar asked very rudely if we were going to make any more changes to our order. She was clearly unhappy with us. I’ve worked in pubs for many years and simply because somebody adds an extra dish to an order does not justify you being rude to customers.

Always friendly and good value food. Some bedrooms and dining room newly redecorated. L

Lovely pub! Book well in advance if you want to eat!

Really poor service, unfriendly and rude staff, very average food that had clearly been heated up in a microwave (it was all served within 5 mins of ordering).

Really poor service, unfriendly and rude staff, very average food that had clearly been heated up in a microwave (it was all served within 5 mins of ordering). And myself and my husband both ended up getting really ill after eating here. I can only assume it was food poisoning as nobody else in our group of 20 got ill, we both got really poorly about 11 hours after eating here and we both had the same thing to eat (jacket potato with prawns). It’s a real shame as west burton is such a beautiful village, but our group will certainly not be coming back.

Great country pub. Open all day, everyday which is brilliant after finishing one of the many walks around the area.

Great price fabulous location for all The Dales. Soft bed clean linen. Plenty of tea etc. Breakfast good. Other meals acceptable. Plenty of other places nearby to try. Staff polite. Car park small with difficult access for anything bigger than corsa but plenty of space on road. Would use again.

What a great pub! Highly recommended for a break in the Yorkshire Dales. The kind and helpful staff made us very welcome.

Rooms good value and food excellent but hospitality deserves a score of 10+ we were snowed in and it was touch and go if we could get home, without any prompt we were offered our room without charge if we wished to stay.

Just returned from a lovely 3 night stay at the fox and hounds it is the first time we have stayed there but have visited it many times before. As always we were made to feel very welcome. A big thank you to the owners and all the people who work there for a great weekend. Will definitely be going back again.

Warm welcome and wonderful hospitality. Food amazing. Well done Fox and Hounds.

Excellent beer, excellent atmosphere, always popular but rarely crowded. Stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery from the beer garden which doubles as the village green.

Good pub with B&B rooms in beautiful village, great for walking and as a base to explore the Dales

Only a quick visit, so not enough info to give 4 stars, but what we enjoyed was all 5-star. Nice trad pub in beautiful village, on the green with tables out front. Snacks all day — we were there about 2. 20 — 3 pm and had yummy homemade teabread and excellent Wensleydale cheese and soft drinks. The full menu looked very good indeed. Apparently run by fanatical Blackpool FC fans, but nobody's perfect! :P I was interested to see three thick home-bound volumes of BFC programmes dating back to July 1968 — a pre-season friendly against Partick Thistle in which a future Scotland manager played centre forward for Thistle, as did one of Hibs FC's most famous wingers of the legendary early 1970s. As a Hibs fan from Edinburgh, I was inspired to write a haiku on this, which I left on a card inside the programme. Enjoy!

What a lovely place in a gorgeous village. The staff were great, even with our sense of humour. The food was first class. We all had different meals, but we're all very tasty. The staff even let us eat in the bar, as we didn't want to give up our favourite table. Breakfast was also delicious with a choice of cereals plus cooked breakfast. Rooms are a little dated, but very clean. The bed was very comfy and the shower room too, with a plentiful supply of towels. What more would you need before you begin exploring the beautiful surroundings of North Yorkshire

Great pub, excellent food, good ale, picturesque village, great staff

Lovely little pub friendly staff and a nice atmosphere, nice pints would happily visit again.

Food not that good ordered whitby cod and chips the cod was a flat frozen bit of fish also tried other meals and they were very bland but the breakfast was nice

Michele D.

Ok room. Lovely staff. Absolutely fabulous evening meal! I had burger my partner had sausage a d Yorkshire pudding and it was out of this world. Absolutely fantastic. Based on this I expected our breakfast to be the same quality but unfortunately it was not. The gentleman serving us was lovely so I feel giving this review but the breakfast was absolutely dire! 2 slices of rock hard bacon definitely pre cooked and no way the day it was served. It had pools of fat sat in it. One egg, one pre cooked sausage and a cherry tomato fried. Cold toast. I have to say this is not satisfactory! Sorry because the guy serving was so nice but it was absolutely appalling

Tommy T.

Always friendly and a warm welcome, good meals at reasonable prices…

Have not stayed here but have visited quite a few times now every time being made to feel very welcome with a good selection of beers and reasonably priced food. The Village green is straight outside front door with beautiful views so you can sit and relax.

Trave L.

Excellent beers, very friendly staff. Typical village pub with a mixture of locals and holiday makers. Food on the menu sounds better than it actually tastes. Reasonably priced. Highly recommended for a nice pint after a walk sitting outside overlooking the village green.

I am the owner and licensee of The Fox and Hounds, West Burton and have been for the past 13 years. We sell large amounts of food both at lunchtime and evenings and are especially popular with our locals which I feel is a good reflection on the services we provide. My son Max is an extremely well mannered and popular young man, both at college and also in the pub with everybody that comes into contact with him. For somebody to call him sarcastic and aggressive is totally objectionable. We are all very proud of him! I would suggest that if you walked into a pub on a Sunday morning out of the tourist season and asked for breakfast and the staff replied that they needed to go and ask what would be available, then this a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It shows that we do not have half cooked food ready for the microwave lying in fridges which is exactly what Lisa Alden is concerned about. Furthermore if this lady had eaten at stupendous breakfast at 11. 30 at another eaterie, then she would hardly be ready to eat lunch at 1. 00 pm. We are asked by many holiday cottage owners if we can supply a menu for their cottages because the vast majority of people enjoy our pub and its home made food. We do not serve a Sunday roast, we leave this to the other large restaurants in the area.
