Such a disappointment, booked a weekend away to celebrate my wife's birthday and within 30 minutes of arriving wished we had gone elsewhere. Arrived around 4pm which we had been informed was check in time, were immediately informed that the rooms weren't ready and could give us no indication of when they would be ready "We had a big turnaround today" was all the information we were given, asked to wait in the lounge and would be informed when the room was ready, finally got into our room around 5.30pm. Visited the hotel bar on our first night for dinner, having got checked in late it was around 7.30pm when we ordered from the bar meal menu, nothing difficult, Scampi and chips and a burger, an hour later it was served, given it was frozen chips and scampi we failed to see why it should have taken so long, nothing exciting, acceptable but for the price paid pretty poor. By now a pattern was emerging, breakfast was served between 8am and 10am every day, turned up for breakfast on our first morning around 9.15am and were asked if we would mind waiting in the lounge until a table became available, so we joined the other 12 people in the lounge and got in for breakfast at around 9.50am, ordered the full Scottish which when it arrived looked less than full, they had forgot the Stornoway black pudding, a favourite of mine so obvious in its omission, and the scrambled eggs looked more like a half cooked omelette which had been cooked half on the floor and half in a dirty frying pan, never in my life have I witnessed such a disaster of an excuse for scrambled eggs, it even had a skin on it, we noticed around the dining room that the majority of those who had actually ordered omelettes had left them almost in their entirety. The room to be fair when we finally got in was comfortable if as others have stated a bit dated, the hotel is not modern in any way, shape or form but has a feeling of a grand home which very much is in need of some TLC. The hotel has a feel of being short staffed and under great strain and I definitely feel that this was behind the delays, the food, well the hotel claim to have a chef in the kitchen, I'd be surprised if that was true as the food was poor in comparison to other hotels, in fact we ate at the Queens View on our way to the hotel and the lunch there was of a better standard. I can only give our opinion and views on our stay but please make your own mind up before visiting, there are other more modern and better hotels in the village, we ate there thankfully on the night of my wife's birthday and the food, service and surroundings were much superior, if we were to visit again we would be more likely to stay at this hotel than at Macdonald Hotel, in fact given our experience I doubt we would stay at another MacDonald hotel again.
