Roast beef Sunday dinner was ok. Plenty of veg but not much meat. Yorkshire pudding was over done. Dessert was cheesecake that was just alright. The whole place is a bit like gods waiting room. The decor is a bit dated, back of the car park is a bit scruffy. Room 102 and 104 are next to the noisy refrigeration units for the kitchen. They never stop and it's REALLY annoying. Front of house is tidy. Nice gardens with a lovely view over the river All the staff are very friendly and helpful though Unexpected swimming pool (booked for a work stay so unknown before arrival) shuts at 9.30pm Very quiet hotel, occasional rally drivers testing their cars on the surrounding country roads I hope breakfast is good to redeem its self.

I had a great weekend here, room was lovely and clean with a really big shower. We sat and ate lunch overlooking the river which was amazing. The pool was lovely and warm and the jacuzzi was very relaxing. Thank you to the George Hotel staff for making our stay so enjoyable.

After walking all the way from Heddon-On-Wall, we really enjoyed the lamp shank :D.

The gym is well equipt for a little gym and the pool, sauna and jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are just heaven. Come relax and have lovely meal and bottle of wine sit outside in the prelit garden under the stars just lovely.

Visited the restaurant at the George tonight. Awful! 1970s ambiance and decoration, ambitious menu but clearly not the chef to pull it off. Everything was bland but yet somehow sweet at the same time. The one bright spot was the view of the river which is stunning. I wouldn't have minded so much but they also charge top prices. £50 for a 2 course dinner for two. I would expect decent food, nicely presented and we'll delivered. Sadly none of these were forthcoming.

Room are clean and comfortable, food is good and prices are not too bad. Leisure facilities are a little tired despite recent refurbishment but much quieter than those in nearby Hexham.

Excellent rooms, staff and food. Great value.

Friendly helpful staff, good sized rooms, fantastic location next to the Chester's Bridge overlooking the River Tyne.

It was OK. The room was a long way from reception and as we are knocking on a bit didn't enjoy the fact we had to endure two flights of stairs with our luggage. But our own fault for not mentioning in booking.

Had a lovely few days here. Very clean and staff very friendly and helpful. I would love to return in the summer as it's such a pretty location.

Service was excellent, restaurant was not too busy but didn't spoil the late lunch, always worth the journey.

Relatives stayed here after Christmas. Found someone's false nails in cabinet, shower tray blocked and heating went off at night time with sub zero temperatures outside. Staff were not helpful when this was reported. Rooms very dated now.

We only stopped in here for our evening meal while travelling however we were able to gain an impression of the place. It appeared to be a more upscale place than we would have preferred and the dining room certainly too formal. Of course that meant that the pricing was upscale too. The food and service was good but we didn't feel comfortable. The location was very nice beside a river that had a pleasant walk along the bank.

Don't expect the sauna or steam room to be working or pool or Jacuzzi to be hot, even if they say they are. Haven't stayed in the hotel but lie to you when you ring to check if everything is working and hot. This has happened on more than one occasion and no refunds are given.

Sadly standards have slipped at this hotel. I visited 4 years ago and had a great time. It's still a nice hotel and the food is good but the restaurant staff are a bit haphazard. One night it took over 2 hours 2 eat a three course meal. Bedroom cleaning is lacking. In fact it's non existent! Such a shame because the hotel is in a wonderful setting.

I love the beautiful views surrounding the hotel. The Tyne river and the bridge is spectacular. Breastfast was lovely.

Warning to Hadrian's path walkers — do not stop here, keep on going. Takes advantage of a nice location. Rooms are dirty, hotel is over priced and the room staff can't read the do not disturb signs, they just walk on in anyway — even though they can hear you're in there. Dinner is awful, just frozen food reheated. Breakfast is horrendous, poorly cooked food, not enough milk so you can't have a cup of tea and they run out of everything. Avoid at all costs, book a cheaper and nicer hotel down the road and use the money you saved to get a cab to and from the route!

Distinctly average. Over priced considering the disappointing dinners featuring chips and onion rings straight from the freezer. Breakfast is a farce. This place looks the part but takes advantage of a nice location and being the only place in town.

Stopped off for afternoon tea. Sat outside overlooking the river and enjoyed a delicious tea — sandwiches, cream scones and cakes! The waiter/barman was chatty and pleasant, great service from Fran!

Arrived @6pm and checked in. Room ok but toilet door locked so could not use nor make drink. Reception came (maintenance personnel gone home) and tried to fix but had no idea what to do or what tools required. Got tools from my car and mended door. This sums up the place could be good (location excellent) but needs work and is overpriced for quality of service and facilities. Also Stayed at Matfen Hall nearby which is much better and was cheaper.

Really is one of those hotels that you should avoid if you can. It's in a terrible state of disrepair and is very very overpriced. They have attempted to do work in some rooms but honestly. It's just terrible. The staff are very lovely. But the owners of the chain need a rethink. Look at that for a bit of finishing work.

Ideal for occasional guests, good value for money and strategically located for those who travel the Hadrian's Wall. Nice staff, pretty good food and tidy and clean rooms.

We were camping close to The George Hotel and went in for some drinks after a long day of walking. The selection of drinks was very limited and the deserts we had were average. If you fancy a drink and can face the prospect of a 15 minute walk go to the Crown Inn just up the road. We had breakfast at the hotel in the morning too. This was great! Nine pounds got you as much as you could want. Though ordering of the menu (also included) was much better quality than canteen style buffet breakfast.

The hotel needs updating. Corridors to narrow and dark wallpaper old room looked ok, bathroom was horrible shower not working. Dinner food was blant and overcooked. Breakfast ok staff like robots. Beautiful location.

The newly decorated and revamped gym and swimming pool are fantastic.

Well where do I start, from the moment me and my wife entered the hotel we were given outstanding customer service, Abby the receptionist was efficient polite and friendly. We were shown to our room (the hadrian suite) which was absolutely nipping clean, the views from the hotel room where of the river North tyne, The evening meal was pleasant and we both cleared our plates, special mention to the waitress who's name I've forgotten (blonde hair served us evening meal on the 5, 2, 16 and breakfast the following the morning) … After the meal we retired to the cocktail bar which has river views and a open fire, (what's not to like there) the bar has a selection of real ales and reasonably priced spirits. The breakfast was delicious and had a great range of choices with complimentary tea and coffee. I would just like to thank all the staff at the George from Heather and her house keeping team, Abby and her front of house team plus the waitresses and bar staff for an amazing time, just what we needed. You are a credit to your hotel we will definitely be back for a real ale by the fireside or wether permitting the river … Thanks again Liam and Kerry room 301

Charged an absolute fortune to stay there Christmas eve and Christmas night. Place is in desperate need of a refurb. It's dated and it smells. Bed destroyed my neck and back. Bathroom was horrible, shower was a warm trickle of water. Breakfast was alright. This place should not be charging more than £50 a night anytime of year. For what I paid for these 2 nights I could've had a few nights in a vegas strip hotel. Tried phoning the hotel a day or so later because I thought I. May have left something in the room. No answer. Left a message on their machine and no one phoned me back. Will never stay here again.

The (dated, tired-looking) spa is the only redeeming feature really. Food is decidedly average, both breakfast and dinner. The hotel is geared up for older clients and it shows. Better food and atmosphere found up the road at the Crown.

Lovely views in the well kept garden of the river and arched bridge. Pleasant front desk staff on arrival. Immediate reception area has been done up in a really nice modern style. Unfortunately the carpets in the hallways further into the hotel give it a musky smell, they may be due change! Only issue with room was a obvious public hair on the duvet cover. My room had a really nice view of the garden and river. Bar staff (or lack of) was struggling to keep a smile on his face, probably due to his shift as sole bar staff until the bar closing at 11pm. Breakfast was pleasant enough, could of had more on the quantity side. Just one slice of toast, one sausage and one rasher of bacon seemed on the stingey side. Obviously came with egg and beans but they definitely should try harder. It's a very nice hotel but it could be a lot better too.

There is not much I expect from a hotel: a good bed, a good shower, a bar and bedside plugs. This hotel failed spectacularly to provide a bar on an evening where they knew a wedding was happening in the village. The night porter tried his best to rouse the duty manager but was unable to secure a key to the bar. The bedside plugs were set to only accept special plugs so phones etc have to be charged at the two desk sockets provided. I would give this hotel four stars if the bar issue had not happened, and five if the rooms were renovated to provide plugs. Apart from these issues there was nothing wrong with the room.

Bed linen mauchit, had to get it changed. room worn and left with previous occupier's discared rubbish, none too clean either. bathroom in need of major clean, extract fan encrusted with human? detrirus. in short try anywhere else.

3 night stay at the George Hotel Chollerford Hexham near Newcastle room 316 Nice friendly staff on reception bit of a trek to the room but helpful staff gave us a hand Lovely room very spacious shower as well as bath with hand held shower Fabulous breakfast very attentative staff lovely dining room overlooking the river Dinner excellent value for the price catering for fussy eaters no problem Excellent position for many outings we went up the coastal route to Alnwick and called at Craster for their superb smoked kippers The Metro Centre not far and easy to find good day out if weather inclement Hexham is a nice but steep town and if you get the chance call at Hartside 1903 ft above sea level spectacular views Lots of other places to visit at the next visit Excellent value for money even though the drinks were a bit dear Would recommend our room the pool looked inviting perhaps next time Spacious areas to sit and relax Overall super place in a lovely setting with lots of very different places to go and visit Thank you to everyone for making our stay so enjoyable Chicken Lady.
