Fantastic view from our room. Staff excellent.

Went to the Compleat Angler for an 80th birthday tea, which was pleasant. But despite registering our car on the ipad at reception we've now received a parking fine for parking while we ate. Quite why Macdonald Hotels think that's going to make us want to come again is a mystery to me. Even if we appeal it (the car park is outsourced, of course), it's a load of rigmarole we could do without. And no guarantee the company will accept our appeal. Won't bother coming here again — plenty of nice hotels don't put their customers through this hassle.

After Dining at the Compleat Angler, I Was Seriously Sick The restaurant's managers will tell you as they told me: "It's not our fault. We investigated. " Did they see me violently vomiting three hours after I ate their fish dinner. The nausea, dry heaves and diarrhea continued into the early morning. Most of my companions escaped falling ill because they ate the pork. Now everyone can make a mistake, but the staff refused to admit the slightest possibility that I suffered food poisoning at their hands. One other diner in our party complained she also had a case of nausea after consuming the fish. There were 15 people in our party and the staff seemed confused in trying to deliver the large number of orders. I can't imagine what was happening in the kitchen. Herewith the restaurant’s last response… "I understand your allegations, thank you. As explained, we have conducted an investigation into the Food Safety checks carried out that day and found no cause to suggest there is a connection between the meal you had in our restaurant and your illness. Therefore, no refund will be given as compensation as requested. "

I had a room with a great view. Fantastic food breakfast, lunch and (conference) dinner.

So far we’ve had a great time, and the accommodation and food is really good!

Great experience from start to finish. Great welcome, great service in all areas. David the Concierge was informative, friendly and extremely helpful. At reception, all the staff were very welcoming, Carina was exceptional. Our breakfast waitress Courtney was super especially with Mabel our dog, appearing with two sausages for her. Our last visit was over four years ago and we were concerned whether things would have changed for the worse with all the issues that Covid have caused. It was Mabel’s first stay away from home and she was treated as a guest, rather than as a dog. She was given her own jar of treats and fussed over where ever we were in the hotel. Loved the addition of the globes, going to aim to use on our next booked visit in March, as it is our 30th Wedding Anniversary, just need to find two other people to share it with, as the minimum usage is four — hope Mabel is allowed🙏

We cannot thank all the staff at Compleat Angler enough for making our wedding day the most amazing and magical day of our lives. Michele and her team went above and beyond for us, the food was incredible and the rooms were fantastic (especially the Windsor suite) we felt like royalty. Special thanks to David the concierge, what a wonderful man, so kind, friendly and helpful. An exceptional human being who just could not do enough for us. We cannot wait to come back and celebrate our anniversaries for years to come. Thank you.

The staff are very welcoming, quick to help, and extremely efficient. The hotel itself has a lot to offer with an amazing conservatory room for breakfast and an Atul Kocchar restaurant. Amazing views of the weir and river Thames. We shall definitely return when covid 19 allows. Thank you for an excellent stay.

I was born in Marlow and have not been to The Complete Angler before. We went for the afternoon tea hamper and were not disappointed. So much good quality food and in a beautiful setting. All of the staff were amazing.

Incredible service, went above and beyond to ensure we could have scones and cakes as the riverside restaurant was full. Cannot recommend enough. Thank you so much.

Lovely hotel in a beautiful area. Rooms are a little old but very clean. Restaurant food was lovely and we had a riverside table which was very nice. Little issues probably as a result of staff shortages such as room service number going to main Macdonald number and reception phone constantly busy but nothing that wouldn’t stop me staying again, in fact given the recent circumstances and the difficulties Macdonald hotel staff are facing at the moment they were very professional and friendly. Will definitely visit again.

Really unhelpful hotel following cancellation due to coronavirus.
I checked on line and the hotel has availability for the new date (which is the rescheduled pub in the park) but had hiked up the price by £100 per room per night. Still tho. We will all need a celebration when CV19 passes so I decided to take the hit. Called hotel who said they couldn’t change as the booking was made through booking. Com.
Called booking. Com who called the hotel while I waited and were able to change my reservation with no additional cost. I was hugely surprised and pleased.
Then the next day I get an email from booking. Com saying Macdonald Compleat Angler would not honour the reservation. I guess they want the extra £100. Needless to say I will not be staying here now or ever. What abysmal customer service.

What a lunch Oasis Bereavement Group yearly luncheon out at the Compleat Angler. The a staff where 5 staff so friendly and very helpful so content.
The food was amazing hot plate and food tasted lovely well presented.

Food was amazing, so different from other Asian restaurants, staff really good, and the view is lovely as its right on the water. This is my 2nd time there, and would go back again.

Had the most delicious afternoon tea (white tea with fig). Fresh sandwiches, beautiful scones and yummy cakes all served on tasteful tableware. The waiters were friendly and attentive. It was most pleasant to sit by the window watching the boats on the river. A very relaxing, enjoyable afternoon indeed!

Our first impressions are that this hotel is exquisite with a fabulous ambience, their service so far is second to none.

Sadly found hair in my food. I discreetly went to the bar to explain and the meal was whipped away by a waiter. I then waited 10 minutes watching my husband finish his meal whilst no member of staff came to talk to me. I then had to find someone to explain I was put off and did not want a replacement. They insisted a new one was being prepared. I felt I had been given no choice. They then said they would refund the meal and promptly took our card. We walked out and looked at the receipt which showed us they had charged us again for the meal not removed it. We had to return where the manager was very apologetic and refunded the now 2 meals. Appalling service and we were still charged for service. It is in a lovely location and one suspects that they feel they do not need to try to hard where service is concerned. Very disappointed.

Perfect spot for a weekend in Marlow and the surrounding area. Staff are first class, special mention for the concierge, Chris, who organised the use of the hotels boat.

We had our family wedding here on the weekend the set-up was fantastic, the rooms were lovely with beautiful views. The catering staff were fantastic especially Hamza who went out of his way for us yhe entire time… he is a great Asset to the Company. The reception / checking needs a bit of work as twice once on the 1st and again on the 2nd day we were called to ask why we were not vacating the rooms even though a late checkout was arranged and written on the booking form. The General Manager was very accommodating and great too.

Excellent lunch, very accommodating of young children. Staff were all polite and helpful. Would definitely recommend and visit again when next in Marlow.

We had a great night DJing for Catherine and Jon at their wedding at the weekend. All the event staff were friendly and super helpful and the venue is perfect for a medium sized wedding. We decided on blue uplighters with the starlight DJ booth. Great venue, great staff and great location!

I booked the hotel for long weekend via every escape website. I use this website a lot and was looking forward to going on this weekend. We had a bottle of wine plus three course meal at restaurant. I paid for the whole package plus booking fee which included the breakfast. The best things I like are having your dinner sitting next to River, wonder full food, and made to measure breakfast. Before dinner we went for a drink and I loved the town with exclusive boutiques, what a wonderful break, what a wonderful place.

Afternoon tea — disappointing. After booking this over 2 months ago, we were very much looking forward to our anniversary celebration afternoon tea. When we arrived, we said we had a reservation & were told to pick anywhere we like to sit, didn’t even ask our name! A little odd as we had previously emailed to advise of a dietary requirements this obviously wasn’t noted as they didn’t know who we were or even what time we had booked for!
Table very basic & chintzy, not laid out particularly special, removed a fly from my cheap Willow Pattern cup.
Ordered our tea & champagne. Tea arrived, no extra hot water given or offered throughout the whole period. Sandwiches basic, scones average & cakes looked like they were made in bulk & then cut into 4, certainly not individual or delicate. I can understand hotels cashing in on what is a very popular past time & money for nothing, however when you are charging the same as 5* hotels that offer 1st class Afternoon Tea you need to get it right.
I have been extremely lucky to have experienced Afternoon Tea is some amazing places, this one was below average. Just because you have a beautiful location does not mean you don’t have to try. Toilets also smelt awful of poor drainage & I can see from other reviews this is an ongoing issue.
I had initially liked to stay at the hotel but I think I have changed my mind.

Nice location. The Indian restaurant is the nicer of the two. The in house fine dining gourmet restaurant is anything but fine. Poor service and overpriced mediocre food. £30 for a bog standard steak and no chips. £22 for mac and cheese! Chips extra but never turned up. Sindhu restaurant is much better but again not perfect but I'd go again for the location and mooring. 5 star prices. 3 star service.

Great views but it's not for the faint hearted if you want a value for money meal, but if you want quality, it's the place to go…

Visited the Compleat Angler for a coffee with family. Very expensive, but that was to be expected and the service was good. Great location right on the river with a nice view over to the old church on the other side.

To be perfectly honest I was pretty underwhelmed by our afternoon tea at The Compleat Angler. The sandwiches were a little stale around the edges as was the hotel. They are in the middle of, what appear to be, some fairly large renovations with scaffolding up around various parts of the hotel.

Comfortable, well appointed room overlooking the river weir, but I don't personally like the dreary, contemporary decor which I find rather depressing.

This was a midweek stay whilst the hotel was good and staff where helpful we had to keep asking for things that should have been done with out asking.

Afternoon tea at the compleat angler was a compleat disappointment… thank gawd it was a present and that we didn’t pay for it…
Cold tea, dried up sarnies x 6 fingers… rock hard scones (mini) and an assorted of half a mouthful cakes, which were not nice… we were in there for an hour and left… no atmosphere, couldn’t understand the waiter which was bad as we asked if there was meat on the platter… when we’d asked for no meat… and then there was ham! Never mind… been there, done it and won’t do it again…
And the toilets stank…
But… a lovely view…

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting but the in house restaurants are very expensive. Some nice and more reasonably priced restaurants within easy walkway distance.

A unique hotel in one of the most beautiful locations in the UK. The restaurant overlooks Marlow Bridge and the Weir in the Thames. Service standards are high and the hotel has been popular for generations. The menu could improve. It lacks appeal. It is too small and unoriginal. To succeed today the restaurant needs to take a quantum leap.

Had a team Xmas lunch. Lovely surroundings and great staff. Food was a just a standard Xmas dinner, nice but nothing to write home about.

Picturesque location and helpful staff. The rooms look a little old fashioned but they are clean and suit the building. If you can get a deal, the feature rooms overlook the river and are worth going for.

Very comfortable and upmarket. The staff were friendly, helpful and very well trained. If you go there you need to dress up a bit… it’s cosy and intimate and a great place to on a date.

The hotel has a fantastic location, sitting over a lock on the Thames. If you were here as a tourist, it would probably be the only hotel that you would want to stay in. However, as a business traveller it was less ideal. The interior is quite dated and genetic in the room areas, the room was extremely hot making sleep difficult, and there are no fitness facilities. Although less historical and a bit soulless, the Crowne Plaza is better for business — probably why it is always booked up.

Comfortable yet small rooms, slightly dated. Pleasant river views to one side. Close to town centre, walking distance. Nice breakfast, spoilt by receptionist giving us and an elderly couple the wrong finish time which nearly left us without. Hot drinks in rooms. Came here to eat at the Indian restaurant which was a disappointment. It's website showed beautifully served food when the real experience was not and included waitress' thumb in food as she put the plate down.

Stayed here for my husbands 50th birthday. I booked an executive four poster room, at a cost of £216.00. One of the main reasons I booked the hotel was the locality to marlow and also the lovely Champagne garden bar. We had a lovely walk around Marlow and returned to change for our evening, at 6.30 we went to the garden to share a bottle of Moët to be told there were no tables. Around 7 tables were free but reserved for a wedding, but no one was seated. I feel we should have been offered a seat in this circumstance. Very disappointed with the service. The rooms are old worldly, quite a few cobwebs around. The bed wasn't great in terms of comfort which I did state to reception. Would not stay here again I'm sorry to say.

The place is nice, the reception not so. Boiling hot day, air conditioning didn't work in our executive room. Only after threatening to move out they offered a room with air-conditioning, which was a downgrade. They refused to offer any refund and couldn't care less.

Inexperienced staff let the hotel down. On arrival we were greeted by 3 different staff members, each of whom took our booking information and then disappeared. More training seems to be needed. Otherwise tea was splendid.

I was brought here by my daughter for afternoon tea as a birthday treat. The setting was lovely, however the service was very poor. A catalogue errors occurred. The staff directed us to the terrace as we arrived a little early, and then proceeded to forget about us! Eventually we were shown to a table and offered a glass of champagne, lovely, but it didn't arrive without being prompted again! When the sandwiches arrived they were curled up at the edges and some still had the crusts on! There was no explanation of the different teas on offer and the crockery was not even bone china! The portions of jam and clotted cream were very mean and whilst it wasn't a problem for us to have more we had to find a member of staff to replenish and then had to chase them for that to be brought to us! All in all a very disappointing afternoon tea. I would recommend the management visit and experience tea at other comparable 5 star establishments (Stoke park or the Grove, Watford spring to mind) which charge very similar prices but their attention, food and service is vastly superior.

Quite quaint. Seen better days, frosty reception staff and a bit overly pretentious without the quality to support it. Never seems to have hot chocolate.

We went for a meal of 20+ people. Service was very poor and by the time our main course had been eaten, we still had not received the veg. How they could then deliver it to the tables is beyond me. I would have been too embarrased. The staff were sour. The head waiter prefered to tap in his computer rather then respond to an enquiry. Only one gave any kind of smile and we really were made to feel like we were putting them out. Starters were ok, main was nice (except without veg), desert was nice, location great.

We stayed here last year and everything was perfect. Something has changed for the worse as our room and dinner this time were a huge disappointment and all our complaints were a waste of time. Such a lovely place and such a huge disappointment. The management seem to be absent. Now very overpriced for below average accomdations and service.

Having entertained my VIP GUESTS to Atul Kochers restaurant, I would put down my experience of fine dining to be most disappointing. Vegetarian food was far too expensive — small portions with no mouth watering taste. Indian breads were cold and poor quality. I would never go back. Total hype. I will never trust Michelin Star ratings ever again.

I was just picking up a guest at a wedding reception, but the place was very well done up and a good choice for the reception as far as I could tell.

Stayed in 2013 and would go back. It does not have a "Modern" feel, it's a very old quaint hotel on the river. Very friendly staff and really no complaints, it all comes down to what you prefer when staying somewhere. This gave me a good feel for local life, as opposed to a commercialized modern standard hotel chain. Easy walk into downtown main street made it a great location every night.

Rooms are nice, food is good and good service. The bathrooms are not great. Expensive.

Our stay has been fantastic! The staff are brilliant, and the place is amazing. The room wasn't ready until 4pm, much later than expected. There was also no wine, as promised. The room was also not made up by the time we got back around 3pm after a meal. Apart from that, very good!

My husband and I got married in June and we had an "all-inclusive" package through Abbey Catering. Booking this package was the best decision we ever made! It made the entire wedding planning process so stress-free.

Lovely Hotel, Lovely Staff, all very well trained. Was nearly a five star experience but… Breakfast was not good at all. At £15 a head and a lot of advertising banners in reception screaming about the quality, my hopes were set high, sadly it didn't deliver. A fly on my fried egg! While I thought on the day "it's just one of those things" having thought about it later, I don't think it was good enough. Surely they're supposed to check the plate before bringing it out? It would be hard not to spot a fly sitting there on the egg! They then brought me a "new plate" a few minutes later. I knew it wasn't a truly fresh plate as they claimed, as nothing on it was piping hot — only medium warm. How can you cook a fry up from fresh and get it to medium warm in 3 minutes? Hmmmm. Upon checkout there was a £45 charge to our room — nothing to do with us, but removed by the receptionist. Disconcerting that I nearly didn't check at all. Then my follow up email bill was confusing and full of discretionary charges, card charges etc, also splitting drinks bills into two charges for some reason… Confusing and felt like they were trying to add costs on at every conceivable opportunity. Please just be up front — I will gladly pay for a hotel if it's great quality… It's worse to claim lower prices, then leave me feeling a little duped when all these extras appear. Fix the breakfast and fix the billing system and be up front with added costs and kaboom, you'll have a truly great hotel.

Stopped by for breakfast at the Compleat Angler — beautiful location overlooking the river weir and Marlow church. I did not try the buffet. It looked pretty standard fair. Ordered the eggs benedict and they did a good job. Presentation good, nice tea and coffee and table service. My request for brown toast was ignored but overall I would rated this for a good quality experience for a quiet upmarket breakfast meeting place.

We went their on a friends recommendation. What a let-down it turned out to be. They have a great location right on the river, but that is all they have going for them. They seem to use that to justify the lousy food and lousy service. We went for lunch and after waiting for 30 minutes just to get the menu, (asking twice) probably an hour for the food, we did what most people would do, we eventually complained about the time and asked for service and food. Well they looked down theor nose and then rolled their eyes so far back into their heads, I thought they would go blind. Not even an apology. This just left us feeling awful, like "why did you come here", not a nice experience. Then onto the food, it was very basic, bland, not what we expected for the price or reputation. Price wise you pay alot, taste wise, get a cheap meal for two at Tesco or Sainsbury's. What a rip-off. We eat out quite regularly and very few restaurants come close to this level of bad service. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Steelasophical steel band has performed at this venue for weddings and found it to be one of our most fav venues. Stunning river-side location.

This is a very peaceful town and the view from the hotel of River Thames is wonderful.
