I was a guest at a wedding this weekend and it was my first visit to Wivenhoe House. It’s a beautiful location and despite the less than summery weather it was a lovely day. The staff were all very helpful and friendly but I would like to specifically mention Callum Hollis who went above and beyond and was a pleasure to have him as part of the staff for the evening so thank you Callum.

We had the most magical experience here for our wedding day. Nothing was too much for staff and food was gorgeous. A very relaxing day which both me, my husband, family and friends really enjoyed ♥️♥️

The best place I have been to, myself & my husband and was there for our honeymoon and they made it feel so special and the people were so nice & lovely,,, will definitely be going back.

My mother and I shared a lovely birthday celebration for Afternoon Tea, given as a gift, and we had a lovely, relaxing time, feeling very cared for, with attentive staff, excellent service, beautiful setting and great experience overall and the catering was excellent, recommend to all, thank you.

Such a beautiful location. Afternoon tea was lovely finished off by walking around the grounds. Staff are polite and look forward to going again.

Family meal with three younger children who have the attention span of Dory! Fabulous menu choice with a two or three course ‘deal’ for the adults, excellent children’s menu and the staff were chatty and accommodating. Food as always was spectacular (squeezed in 3 courses). The venue and staff make a family meal so very enjoyable. Highly recommend.

Wivenhoe House Hotel’s Brassiere is a cozy space with friendly staff; the Friday, Saturday & Sunday Specials, this time we tried 3-course with 2-hour bottomless.

We’ve just returned from spending Christmas at Wivenhoe House and it was fantastic! From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly and shown to our room the whole stay was amazing. The extra touches (stocking left outside our room on Christmas morning) made it even more special. Our 3 year old daughter loved her visit from Santa while she was eating her dinner and loved her gift. A special mention to Alex who went above and beyond to make sure we all enjoyed our stay and ensured our daughter had the perfect time. Thank you for making our Christmas 2019 one to remember I have no doubt we will be seeing you all soon :)

Have been twice in the space of 6 days and enjoyed both visits. The first visit was slightly better. The smoked salmon starter on the second visit was very chewy, and the roast beef quite tough. But we still enjoyed our meal. Hope to come again soon.

Always a joy to visit Wivenhoe House. The staff are exceptional in their professionalism and care. They made my Mother's 90th birthday a wonderful and warm day we will always remember.

Went for afternoon tea with my mum on the 2nd October and I have to say it was so lovely, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was lovely and relaxing with lovely views.

I never write reviews but this place is so lovely I just wanted to share. We had a family gathering for a 50th Wedding anniversary lunch. The food was amazing, the staff were so friendly, helpful and polite the best service I seen for years. The whole day was 5star would definitely go again and recommend. Thank you to all the staff who made our day so wonderful.

Beautiful afternoon tea for our wedding anniversary. Staff were so attentive and welcoming, nothing we asked was too much for them. Very large selection of food, all tasted lovely. They catered to allergies brilliantly and added special touches with a small celebratory cake too. The setting is beautiful and elegant. Wonderful experience and now thinking of another celebration where we can go again!

We got married here in March 19. The waiters the bar staff the wedding planner were great and it would of been a perfect day apart from the very rude receptionist. I the bride arrived with my party an hour before the wedding. You would expect the first point of contact to be very welcoming especially 5he amount of money spent with the hotel for the big day.
but she was rude and would not let any of us move from reception until we payed for family rooms that had been booked. This lady needs to gain some customer service skills before you put a dampener on someone else's big day!

We had our wedding here at the weekend & it was amazing! The most beautiful venue including the bedrooms, ceremony room & grounds, so many guests complimented on how lovely the venue was. Every single staff member was so helpful, the food was incredible, & our whole day couldn’t of gone smoother. Would like to say a huge thank you to the whole team and especially to Katie the wedding coordinator who has been amazing from the moment we booked 2 years ago to the actual wedding day. We had the perfect day xx.

I had afternoon tea and Jazz at Winenhoe House Hotel today and it was delightful. We sat on their beautuful lawn, surrounded by the park and its ancient trees. The tea was great, attentive service, freshly baked, fluffy light scones, gorgeous cakes. And I was impressed with the effort they made in creating a suitable alternative for a diabetic. I'll be back soon to try the Brasserie!

Was really looking forward to going to Wivenhoe House but left very disappointed, the £15 steaks was very small and thin. The Rooster Burger was dry and over cooked but my guest didn't want it sent back and ate most of it. The Gamekeeper Burger tasted like a normal beef burger rather than a game burger including venison (there wasn't a hint of venison at all). The buns for the burger was Brioche so much to sweet. Overall not many choices, small portions and very overpriced. Finally staff/service was poor when trying to pay there was no one in sight I had to go and look for someone. When someone did appear they made an excuse of being busy setting up for a big function sounding like we didn't matter as only being there for lunch. So I don't recommend this establishment.

Beautiful, really special place. Held mum's 80th tea party here so much food! Family stayed over said the rooms in the old and new buildings were wonderful. Staff are excellent, food in the Brasserie was lovely too.

Our third visit for afternoon tea, thanks to Birthday vouchers! It is very close to getting 5 stars, but could improve on the following for me :- I would rather have a savoury option, more sandwiches, less cakes. Sauasage roll & fruit cake would be nice instead of all creamy cakes. We left lots of cakes, as did several other tables. Otherwise very nice staff & surroundings.

I've been here several times, mostly accompanying guests out for lunch. The staff is professional and competent, the place is cozy. In the menu you can find some salads, burgers, and seafood, including fish and chips. I'm not crazy about the food, but it's definitely not bad. Actually, this is the best food you can find close to the university campus. I recently had a a venisson burger with triple cooked chips and I enjoyed it. I suggest wivenhoe house for taking guests out for a business lunch. I'll certainly keep going there.

Nice rooms, but on a university campus. We thought we were gwtting a period room in the main house but instead got a modern room in the new wing with a wet room (my personal dislike). Brasserie is on the gound floor, a bit cafe like.

Today I took my mum for a belated birthday treat of afternoon tea at Wivenhoe House. I must say it was beautiful — the food was lovely and fresh, the setting stunning and the staff so eager to please without being in your face and nothing too much trouble for them. The price made it value for money. Will definately be coming back at some point!

Went there for an afternoon tea hen party. Food was lovely, the scones tasted amazing, the grounds were beautiful and the service was really good. Cant fault the staff at all. Definitely recommend it!

Have been here for a Christmas party and a wedding and the food isn't up to scratch when mass produced. Maybe they are better for ordered meals but I won't be trying at the cost. Colchester has a lot of great restaurants and a taxi will only be a fiver into town. The hotel and grounds are lovely though and the staff are friendly. Bar is ok for a hotel, they had an appealing choice of wine. There's not much room in the bar unless it's sunny.

We had a great stay. Beautiful surroundings. The staff were very lovely and the food was great. The only downside was the finishing touches to the room (for example big crack in wall, not enough tea bags for the amount of people in room), but would defo recomend, and return.

Booked for an evening meal with my family to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday. Chose this venue specifically because of the menu, and it’s location, I wanted somewhere really nice for his birthday celebrations instead of the usual high street restaurants. I’d sent the menu to my mother in law who agreed it was lovely, that’s why we chose it. I also made sure the venue was aware we were celebrating his special birthday to ensure everything was perfect. I got a phone call two days before to confirm my booking and I was asked if I wanted the fish Friday menu, I specified we were going to stick with the a la Carte menu and was told this wasn’t a problem.
We had sat down just ordered drinks.
And were given the fish Friday menu. I told the waiter we were having a la Carte so he brought one a la Carte menu to the table and gave it to me. It wasn’t the same a la Carte menu that was on the website that initially attracted us to book with you. After being advised this was the only menu other than the fish Friday one and going back and forth arguing over it, we were informed that menu was reduced as it was fish Friday. Then a waitress said the chef offered to do the a la Carte me u for us.

I attended a conference at the WHH. The staff were friendly and professional. The food provided was delicious and the service was impecable. Would recommend and would definitely return there.

Had a lovely sleep and it was very posh but not too posh if you get what I mean.

We had a lovely three night stay here. I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it! We were visiting family in the area, but needed a place to stay at night. I actually wish we had a little bit more time to spend at the hotel, since we loved it so much! The breakfast was fantastic, and I appreciated the wonderful cappuccinos I started the morning with every day.

Went there for a special birthday meal. A beautiful old Manor House, converted to a luxurious hotel with themed rooms. The food was superb and the service was excellent. A well hidden little gem.

First class break in a luxury suite. Every thing about this break very very good. Would recommend to any one.

The food was lovely but we waited for over half an hour for it to arrive in an empty restaurant. Nice settings and friendly staff.

Fantastic for special events, weddings, afternoon tea or just an escape from city life. The manager Oliver is a really attentive and helpful guy with a flare to succeed. This is one of the main hotels to invest in students. It is liked to an advanced education program in hospitality. Cannot rate this highly enough as a place to stay or even to just visit for dinner.

Had dinner in the Brasserie on Thursday evening. Reception and service were good, young staff helpful and friendly, and if they couldn’t answer our questions about the menu they were willing to find out and report back. Food was generally very good — we had pork, lamb and trout for mains. All were tasty, hot and well-presented; the lamb portion was rather small, and the Alsace cabbage rather uninteresting. House white was palatable. The refurb of the Brasserie is a big improvement over the previous design. Altogether an enjoyable evening.

4* hotel, very contemporary looking rooms and traditional outside, having Mac instead of TV that can be used as TV and computer as well.

Shooting a groom prep for someone's wedding. The staff were fantastic and very helpful, the location and scenery is absolutely gorgeous.

Afternoon tea, lovely place — afternoon tea should have been stunning. But it wasn't!
Sat next to cleared tables, but with very dirty tablecloths. Tea was pored without leaving it to brew making it weak. Scone was raw in the middle, eclair was dry with no filling. Was left too long without a refill of tea.
Whole experience didn't feel special. Couldn't wait to leave.

Attended a wedding at the wivenhoe. Staff were extremely courtious and professional. The venue is in a beautiful setting and a perfect place to hold a wedding. Brilliant venue.

Excellent service as is to be expected from a service training school. Asked for custom order when booking which arrived perfectly without reminders on the day. Beautiful location and interior. Very well turned out staff which makes it all the more worthwhile dressing up oneself. Wide selection of seas and luscious cakes for afternoon tea. Highly recommended.

Very nice Hotel and grounds. The suite we had was clean, large with good views. The food and service was excellent. Must mention Daniel who works in the restaurant, his customer service skills are very good. The only downside was the reception area, checking in/out was shambolic. People queing, more staff needed. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Afternoon tea for a birthday. Lovely spread but the tea was not free flowing. Idyllic surroundings, very helpful staff. Can't comment on the hotel as not a guest but would try it out.

Attended for afternoon tea. Price was very reasonable (£20 each). Sandwiches were very good and extensive selection of teas and coffees.

Never stayed the night here but been in just to have a look! I have played sports a number of times just outside and the building is just stunning! Well worth the visit!

I surprised my partner with afternoon tea and a one night stay at this beautiful place. We used to live in Wivenhoe so this was a lovely return to the area. Stunning, well equipped rooms, attentive staff (our package included a glass of bubbly which they brought to our room after we had checked in… it was lovely sat on the balcony enjoying the bubbly and the view) Breakfast was also included, which we couldn't fault. A good range of food and drink. Lovely staff and pretty surroundings… what more could you want? Waiting for my partner to treat me with a return visit! Good food and drink. Attentive staff. Stunning grounds. Peaceful surroundings. Easily accessible (lifts to all floors-I checked before I booked as my partner has a disability and would not have been able to stay otherwise)

I stayed here in a deluxe on a business trip and ate here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hotel Clean, smart and spacious. They have iMacs instead of TVs which was really quite cool. Also the building is pretty good looking and set in a nice location. Food Breakfast was great, as was dinner: The venison at dinner was brilliant. Lunch wasn't quite as good, but 2/3 isn't bad. Service What's nice about this place is that as a hotel school it has university students making up what appears to be around half of the staff. They are an absolute credit. I wish all hotel staff were as attentive and enthusiastic.

Waited 45 mins to be served a cup of coffee, and was then brought out tea! The service was terrible. No one came back to the table after our afternoon tea was served.

We visited for the food tasting for our wedding. The food was delicious and the staff were incredibly helpful and attentive. I look forward to our wedding here in July!

Rooms are gorgeous and the staff are excellent. I'm getting married there in July this year and I can't fault them. We just had our tasting session which was excellent, the head chef even came and had a sit down with us as he had other suggestions he wanted us to think about.

I visited Wivenhoe House Hotel recently for a friend's wedding. The service was lovely and the reception was excellent. The staff were the best part — so friendly and helpful, especially with my 18mo who kept running around the corridors ☺

We had a wonderful evening in the Brasserie on Friday to celebrate our Anniversary. The food and service was excellent. The attention to detail was faultless. Looking forward to our next visit.

Disappointing second stay. The room doors slam loudly — disturbing at night — and the view just looked across at the new block, giving them a full view of the room. The double bed was narrow and 2 lights were not working in the bathroom. On a hot day/night, it seemed the room was even hotter than outside, although a fan helped. Breakfast service on the first day was poor — had to ask staff to refill 4 separate items, which they should have been done before they ran out. OK the second day. A pity, as we had such a great first stay.

Great food, friendly staff.

We went to the Brasserie for the first time on Friday and had a fantastic meal. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we walked in, with very helpful and friendly staff. The wine list was very comprehensive and complimented the set and a la carte menus. It also made a nice change to be able to dine while live music was being played. Our thanks go out to William and all the staff at the Brasserie who made this such an enjoyable experience, we will definitely be returning soon.

An 18th century manor house with beautiful modern wing extension. One of Britain's very first hotels that doubles as hotel school. The result is very pleasant, with top notch service. We stayed in the modern wing, a brand new building with all the trimmings. Rooms have a patio with comfy chairs and lovely view overlooking green fields. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and an iMac in every room! Need I say more! The attendant makes you aware that Firefox is available for browsing the web. My kind of place. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine and has been awarded two Rosettes in the AA guide. Once again, great service. Highly recommended, and will certainly be back for more.
