This hotel has a friendly staff and nice rooms with good views. Also a nice Sun Deck with a great view of the of the river area of Norfolk. Also a nice pool if you're in the area I'd highly recommend this hotel to stay.

The Norfolk Waterside Marriott is a great place to have an event at. I attended a family reunion and I could tell the hotel was very accommodating. They were attentive to us and knew when to allow us enough space for our function. The facility was very clean. The food was tasty and met our standards. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Overall, customer service needs work. You're playing the price to be in that area but the customer service doesn't match what you're paying for. I'm not expecting to be waited on hand and foot but I shouldn't have to wait in line for long periods of time for everything or call for a luggage cart and end up 30 minutes later having to go get it myself. There are several other things, but overall customer service needs more work. One more thing I have to mention, the elevators really need to be updated or serviced because it was ridiculous how long it took to catch an elevator. I understand that it was a lot of events going on that weekend but the elevators were just way too slow.

I stayed here for a conference. Common areas were nice, although the AC did not seem to be operating effectively since some conference rooms were hot while others were ice boxes. The staff was nice, and it has a very convenient location for walking and hitting different dinner spots. The bed was comfortable as well and there were some nice views from my room. BUT I cannot get past the quality of the room floors. It’s well past dated carpet, coming off the elevator you are hit with a musty smell and there is literally mold coming from behind the separating molding on the wall. Not only is it off putting in general, but I have a bad mold allergy so it really disrupted my stay. I understand things get dated and they do apparently have renovations planned but a hotel should NEVER be allowed to get to the point of visible mold in the hallways.

I did not visit the waterside Marriott for stay but a social event. The staff, bartenders, waitresses and security were all very professional and courteous. Service was top notch and the event catering was excellent, however I am not sure the catering was done through the hotel. The event, the Navy Surface Warrior Ball was excellent. Can't say enough about the staff, they were outstanding.

Besides no free breakfast it's a beautiful hotel and the view was amazing.

Lovely corner room overlooking waterside. Excellent bed and pillows. Coffee machine and all The amenities in the room. Great shower. Of course with a speakman shower head. A bit disappointed in the buffet. For a holiday inn it would be standard for a Marriott one would expect more creativity. No pastries no nothing out of the ordinary. Beautiful hotel, quiet very elegant. He’s phenomenal location excellent.

I called 2 weeks before my stay to request adjoining rooms. When I arrived they stated they did not have adjoining rooms but they could put my children on the same floor. I explained that this was unacceptable and gave the name of the person I spoke with and all of a sudden hey found adjoining rooms. The next day we had to call 3 times after 9 pm to get our rooms serviced. The following day the tub would not drain. We spoke to Joe, the manager on duty about the issues and he appeared accommodating at the time but, when we checked out he was not willing to follow through with his promise to comp our breakfast for the days we stayed. He only comped 1 breakfast for 2 days of our 5 night stay. Overall, the rooms are dingy and dated looking. The attitudes of the service employees is poor, and the valet parking is decent. Expect to wait for your vehicle even if you call in advance.

Stayed in this hotel almost weekly for months on end, staff was always helpful and happy to greet me. The rooms were always nicely kept and well appointed, the restaurant in the lobby was great to grab a bit to eat in and the bar area was really well done! This was a great place to stay in the downtown area with access to all of what Norfolk has to offer!

Horrible. My husband is here for the NHA conference. Don't be fooled by the pretty lobby. It ends there. Meeting rooms are not air conditioned. Common spaces are all HOT. Room is tiny and in poor condition. Worn furniture, peeling wallpaper. I know they are planning a room refresh because they tease us with pictures of what it's going to be like, not what it really is! This hotel needs a gutting with new mechanical systems and sound proofing! LOUD! I can hear every person going down the hallway even if they are just having a normal conversation. The housekeeping room is next door and they talk very loud as they go in and out. We are on a concierge floor. This is not a 3 or 4 star hotel other than the view. Staff clearly has heard the complaints and become numb. Pool facilities are also broken. When I went to the fitness room is was a squelching 82 degrees and filthy machines. 3 days later they got it down to 75 degrees. I paid to utilize a nice YMCA for the week. The management knows we are trapped for the convention so we had to stay until today. If you're an event planner don't put your group here. Stay at another hotel or plan it elsewhere. Shula's had good food and wonderful staff, but our group had to quickly move on after dinner because we were all so hot. Convention is over and we are leaving to another hotel. See photos.

5/17/18 UPDATE: The hotel management has reached out and offered us a free night and their most sincere apologies. That's a step in the right direction, though, we'll wait to see if actions match words before adjusting this review. 4/25/18 — original review: Wow. I could not have been more upset about our experience here. I know we all say this but I honest to goodness am not a typical reviewer. But the experience was this bad that I feel I have to do something about it. We stayed here for the 2018 Norfolk Submarine Ball, an event that's been occurring here for years. I booked our room months in advance. We live just over the water and wanted to have a place to get ready and then a place to crash at the end of the night. I think we were at the hotel for all of 16 hours. So they told us check in time is 4pm. I show up at 3:45 and get in the 20 person long line to check in. Make my way up there and the DO NOT HAVE ROOMS AVAILABLE. Again, this is a VERY formal event that has been happening at this location for years and was planned MONTHS in advance. Not some random weird occurrence that happened out of the blue. Someone on the management staff MAJORLY dropped the ball here. The event starts at 6pm and here I am standing in the lobby, unshowered, in my jeans and t-shirt at 4pm being told I can't get to a room. I'm not a high maintenance person but both my husband and I needed to shower and get ready. We don't get into our room until 5:30!

We arrived for a conference and vacation today and I cannot wait to leave. Nice view that's it. I am literally sleeping in a full side bed with my husband in another bed. Hotel is worn, dirty, and I would rate it 2 star. Stay elsewhere! Do not book your group here! I am looking for a new hotel! The fitness room equipment is filthy and the temperature was 79 degrees. The ceiling has rusty vents and the hall has chunks of ceiling falling down. Marriott should be embarrassed by this hotel!

Can you say ROOFTOP HEAVEN! Not only is this an amazing and well put together floor plan and decor but this hotel has amazing restaurants for your palate. The ROOFTOP Is the place to be at sunset. Amazing food and drinks with a view of beautiful Waterside. Must experience if you have not and surely bring a friend or not.

The location is beautiful and the hotel itself is beautiful as well. The valet people were really nice and very helpful and willing to help! The rooms are nice but the only complaint I have is that the toilets are very loud (inside the room and through the walls) when flushed. But other than that this hotel is really nice!

Nice hotel with a good view of the water. Looks like they're getting ready to remodel soon so should be even nicer. Decent room, only there was no mini fridge or microwave. Bathroom space was tight. Bed was really comfortable.

If I didn't have the explorer discount I would not stay here. Great location, lots to do but the rooms are tiny. I cringe at the thought of what these rooms cost without the discount. I like the location. The restaurant downstairs was great. Scenery. Lobby is amazing. Connected parking garage. Wifi. Did not like the size of the room and the carpets remind me of 70s painting, orange, vomit green etc.

Check in was at 4pm we showed up at 430pm. We didn't get our room until 8pm. We were told it was clean and it just needed to be inspected. We went with the intention of getting dressed for the work event there. That started at 6pm. Luckily a friend of mine had gotten his room after an hour of waiting and three trips to the front counter. So 7 people used his room to get ready in. The front desk couldn't tell us a reason for the delay and said we would have our room by 6pm. Room was fine wouldn't stay again due to the overall experience. Would rather have spent the money on a Uber.

We stayed here for New Year's Eve. The few was great. The room was nice and clean and comfortable. The breakfast that was included in our room was fantastic and the service was even better!

The Marriott did a wonderful job with Taste of Ghent. The Hotel is going thru a 25 million dollar upgrade which it desperately needs. The hotel is conveniently located with multiple connected parking garages and valet service.

Very helpful staff. The location is great for downtown Norfolk activities. Parking garage with hotel access and waterside access with covered walkway over the street. Valet parking if you don't mind the extra $$.

I did not have a good experience this time! 1. I could clearly hear conversations, water usage, and TV from the room next door. 3. Regulating the temperature inside the room was very difficult. 2. There was a water issue from the ice machine right outside of my door, that took two of the three days I was there to fix, causing a horrible odor (mold or/and mildew? ) to seep into my room and all through the hallway. I reported the issue of the odor the first night, but when I left on Sunday, it finally seemed to have gotten a little "better". 4. Shula's Restaurant inside the hotel was closed the entire time, so we had to eat on the second level with a very limited menu, and room service was only available for breakfast before 11 am. Not convenient, not pleasant, and not typical of Marriott's that I have stayed in before Good news, the staff was friendly and helpful as possible, but they were short — staffed as well.

The room and service was great. The view if the city and the Elizabeth Rover was beautiful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

First off, this hotel has some older features. This only adds to the appeal! This hotel is very nice and everyone is friendly here. The gym is top notch with a full set of life fitness workout machines, treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights. The pool is a descent size good for lap swims. The jacuzzi is also nice. Good for you plus 3 close friends. Free breakfast for gold members until 11 made my mornings. I was able to sleep in, get a workout, and still have time to eat without rushing. Only advice… before you stay here call and get information for parking location. It is across the street and around the corner. If you can swing it just use valet.

Just misses the mark in pretty much every category. Marriott used to be an upscale hotel but not anymore. Rooms could use repairs, especially air-conditioning which disrupts sleep by loud starts. Service is spotty (e. G. Front desk would not pick up calls, neither would valet service). Makeshift restaurant during their remodel of which you of course only learn after arriving. Bare minimal of coffee and tea in the room. And, the first in all my bad travel surprises, the off-putting but persistent scent of toiletries. Would not stay here again.

The hotel is in the middle of a renovation, so I will definitely edit once completed. The location is nice, near the water and in downtown Norfolk. The lobby of the hotel is grand with the staircase. The room was the Marriott usual. The bathroom definitely needs some updating. I was most disappointed with elite concierge lounge. It was nice enough, but small and missing the usual nightly drink options every other Marriott offers. Room views were lovely.

Very comfortable hotel. Very professional staff. Excellent Breakfast. Set a bit dated and decorating a little bling-bling.

I give them this score and it is only because of their staff and the view from the room. I expected more from the Marriott name but the room needed work. We we're missing the handle on the bathtub to turn the water on and the fridge didn't work. The staff made it the best stay with how professional and polite they were. Everything that I had questions about they were there to help. I could not have asked for a better experience from them. I would stay there again and recommend them because of the professional staff.

Staff was very friendly. Bathrooms need better design & maintenance. The door does not completely open to the bathroom, it hits the toliet half way open. One light didn't work & also missing part of handle on shower knob. Room was clean & comfortable. Breakfast chef was very accommodating. Will be back, over all great place.

High school event/ party. Staff took very good care of the students and their chaperones. Alert security, Extremely patient at the conclusion whilst herding out hangers on. Immaculate facilities. Pristine bathrooms with over a hundred high school students.

Hotel is situated right on the waterfront. Lots of good dining within walking distance. My room had a great view of the harbor. Hotel staff have all been very helpful. Room did not have a mini fridge but hotel delivered one upon request.

The main ballroom we used was directly accross from the parking garage and sky-bridge which was very convenient and it was very easy to find our event room. Our event was from 6pm — midnight, and the servers took good care of us. The open bar at our event lead to a lot of fun, even though one of the bartenders didn't seem to know what they were doing. Hotel staff in the lobby was quick to provide assistance when we had requests from them.

My husband and I were guests for the military Christmas party on the ground floor. We love staying here because the view from any room is exquisite! The restaurant has some of the best food, and you're within walking distance from the popular Waterside and other restaurants. The only issue we had was our drain in the the tub, but maintenance fixed that!

We stayed at the Marriott Waterside lastnight and let me tell you it was horrible. This damn bed is hard as hell.
When we first got here I noticed that one of the beds in the room was handing off the box spring and the sheets were inside out. We did not sleep in that bed. That usually means they just flipped sheets after the last guest. Part of the shower knob was missing and we had to take the plug in tub off for it to drain.
We will definitely not stay there again.

Very nice clean and quiet hotel. Offer self and valet parking. Restaurant on site. Lounge with bar on site. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay here again.

Rooms are very nice. Breakfast snacks are somewhat lacking options but good none the less. They do need to get better about climate control in their rooms. Some rooms were hot and some were cold and there was never a balance. Otherwise very nice.

Always a solid choice in downtown Norfolk. The staff is competent and responsive and the rooms are super clean and well attended.

Marriotts are known for luxury and for upscale service; but, this one falls profoundly short of its history. We booked a double and couldn't get in the room because the key failed to unlock the door; so, the hotel offered an "upgrade" to the 24th floor which is the concierge level. How this level is an upgrade is still a mystery because there's no difference between rooms. In fact, we were downgraded to a much smaller room with only one bed. You'll notice the outdated carpet, paint chipped doors and elevator immediately. If Marriott wasn't clearly stamped on the doors you wouldn't know you were in one. Parking is also "a thing" because what the concierge tells you about validating differs from what the city's parking staff conveys.

Loved the view, but this hotel needs updated immediately. The housekeeping staff sucks. We were given a bed with what appeared to be dried blood stains on it and it had the nerve to have a card saying enjoy your stay. We were moved to another room with no problems. For the amount of money that it costs to rent a room here the experience can be way better (room wise). There was a really nice janitor who took us through an employee elevator to our floor because the lobby was packed. Also the food at Shula's was AMAZING!

It's beautiful outside. Great scenery. Nice places to walk. The only problem is that the new buildings in Waterside are more like a food court of bars with loud TVs. This could have been designed much better.

It was a nice hotel. The decor is a bit long in the tooth. The hotel definitely needs a face-lift. Otherwise it was a great stay.

Ate at Shula's at the Marriott. The food was good, if not a bit overpriced. The service wasn't great. The waitress was very nice, but the only 2 baby high chairs available in the dining room had broken clips (there were apparently more high chairs in a banquet area that couldn't be brought to us). Also, the kitchen forget to add the scallops to my plate for my surf and turf (although they did make it right by bringing me extra scallops).

Would give it zero stars if I could tbh. They were not prepared for the amount of people that were attending the event they were hosting and multiple things kept breaking and people I know who were staying there were getting sick! The only redeeming quality this place has is that its pretty but looks alone cant save this place.

This hotel is located near the waterfront, and is a short walk to some really nice restaurants nearby in downtown Norfolk. In other words, the location is superb. The room itself appears renovated, and the decor is quite modern. While you can tell it's a historic buildings from the lobby and the elevator, I really enjoyed staying here. Breakfast is standard, but the restaurant on the first floor is amazing. Food was surprisingly good for a restaurant in a hotel, and prices were fair. You can get really great food without having to go out. Short walk to water front (I can see it through my hotel room window), so good for joggers or walkers. Overall, very pleased.

Stayed here for business. Room and bathroom were clean. Breakfast is a bit pricey, but pretty good.

I went to the Marriott for a community event. The service and staff was outsanding and helpful with anything we needed.

Beautiful hotel in a great location. There was an easily accessible self parking in addition to valet. The room was beautiful with a great view of the water which made it even better. Room service was quick and the food was tasty as well as reasonable. Wish I could have stayed longer.

Very nice rooms and common areas. Parking directly across the street with enclosed walkway connecting to the hotel is very convenient. Overall great experience.

Great location. Welcome staff with chocolates on the desk. Rooms were clean and nice and Wi-Fi had good speed. Only negative was no microwave in the room.

The room was clean, people where nice, me and my family checked in because of the indoor pool and hot tub both of which were awesome. The pool is only 5ft deep but it was still fun and warm (because it was winter)

The staff was very friendly. However, the rooms were not what I was expecting. I did not have a safe in my room or a refrigerator. In fairness, I did not request either. However, other rooms did have refrigerators. These things ordinarily would not matter to much to me. However, because of the purpose of my stay both were an inconvenience to not have. Would suggest requesting either if it will be a need of yours. A friend of mine staying in the hotel at the same time had several problems with multiple rooms and cleanliness, though I cannot speak personally to the issues.

Our stay at the marriott waterside was wonderful, the staff was very helpful, and our bed was amazing! my recommendation would be the (riverview)!

What you would expect from a Marriott. There was plenty of space and good accoustics for our meeting.

We checked into our room and immediately turned the air down. (we like it COLD when we sleep) Shortly after, we left for the night. At 1am when we arrived back to our room, it was still warm! Despite the air being turned down to 60. We called the front desk and they sent someone up with keys to a different room. I am impressed with how quickly they handled the situation, however, this was the middle of the night. We had just gotten in from having a few too many drinks and dancing the night away at my husband's work Christmas party. We were intoxicated and exhausted. In the midst of us trying to gather our belongings and change floors and rooms, we lost our picture that we had just gotten at the Christmas party. The staff is supposedly unable to locate it. This is especially upsetting due to the fact that, having 2 small children at home, we do not get to get dressed up and have a night out to ourselves very often. These yearly pictures really mean alot to us. Had we not been placed in a room with a broken air conditioner, I feel confident that we would still have the picture in our possession. On top of that, we were told breakfast was complimentary, only to be given a bill when we were finished. There is no way we would have paid $15 per person for that buffet had we known. The waffle tasted terrible, like it had been sitting out for days and gone bad. The bacon and potatoes were both cold.

This hotel is glorious. The location is very convenien, the beds are the most comfortable I have ever slept in, and the staff is very friendly. I would stay here again if I could afford it.

The service is very accommodating as to be expected from Marriott. The location is good and close to many restaurants, although the area seems to be not very lively. Parking is a pain since it is city parking and can't be added to the room even though the residence inn down the street is able to add city parking to the room.

I stayed there last night. I dont know about the food cause I I didn't eat there but I had a great time. The room was nice. The view was spectacular. I love the lication on the hotel. I definitely would stay there again.

Beds are comfortable. We had a great view of the Elizabeth River from the 21ST floor. Staff was friendly and helpful. I have always considered Marriott as among the top hotels and this one definitely lived up to the brand.

My husband and I decided to do a staycation for the weekend and attend a festival at Waterside Park. Wow! Our room was beautiful. Customer service was amazing. The staff were consistently professional, attentive to detail, courteous and friendly. Room service always arrived early and the food was excellent. I would recommend the Norfolk Marriott to anyone. We will definitely be back.

ABSOLUTELY, LOVED IT! We had a spectacularly glorious view on the 24th floor. Ordered room service, the food was wonderful and arrived 15 minutes earlier than promised. The service was impeccable. I would stay again in a heart beat.

Was good — — not great. Was here for a conference and stayed 3~ days. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful but the rest of the staff never went out of their way to help. Lots of places right now around this hotel are shut down (Starbucks, half the restaurants in the area, ect) because of construction. I'm sure it'll be a nicer spot once that's all done.

I stayed here for 3 days for a theatre competition in late October. The rooms were very nice and clean and the service was good. The hotel as a whole was beautiful. It's within walking distance of a mall which is great and a Starbucks is right across the street! My entire experience was lovely. I recommend anyone to stay at this hotel.

Great hotel in a beautiful part of town. Within walking distance of a large mall, however the area surrounding the hotel is up and coming. Great workout room and cute little gift shop in the lobby.

Visited this hotel for a conference. Convenient location, lots of good food choices within close distance, very nice hotel, great staff and service.

I simply love staying at the Marriott hotels. I've stayed at this hotel several times as well as the other marriott lines (spring hill suites, etc. ). They all offer top of the line service, with room service, very clean rooms and bathrooms plus many extras. I will be staying with them again in the future.

Spent a great evening at this hotel. All the nice little, convenient things were in my room (coffee, hair dryer, ironing board, etc. ) and it was very clean. Room service at night and breakfast in the morning. A very good stay. Will be back.

We stayed at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott recently. The room had awesome views of the Elizabeth River but the AC/Heat unit wasn't working properly. We were offered a move at 11:30 at night but refused, as it was so late! The BEST part of the stay was meeting Henry, the bartender in the Piano Lounge. He was so interesting to converse with and went above and beyond getting info for us on a store that we wanted to shop at. He made our experience at the Marriott one that we will go back-just to visit with Henry.
