While the cottage is a great value and cute upon arrival, it quickly becomes apparent that this is a mismanaged property that's very hard to get comfortable in. A huge part of Volcano's charm is the town's quaint nature, but that inherently results in limited dinning options. This is normally not a big deal, because you can just pick up some food and toss it in the oven or BBQ. But not here. After picking up some great local food to cook upon our arrival, I was shocked to see a sign stating the oven didn't work. We made the best of it and just ate some snacks, but as we hunkered down in the surprisingly cold bedroom the heater blanket went out. Since the main heater does not reach the bedroom and the space heater looks too dangerous to sleep next to, I was happy I had my down jacket for Mauna Kea to sleep in. Aside from the above, there were many other "surprises" like rowdy drunken neighbors screaming through the night, but perhaps the most shocking was the realization, that after charging a cleaning fee, and providing no dish washer, they required us to hand wash the dishes. Thankfully, the days passed quick and we moved on to a great vacation rental further north on the Island. With so many AMAZING options nearby, you might as well book a place you can be comfortable in.
