Over 100 Year Old Building, Regardless of the Connections. It's History.

I am hoping Scott didn’t do a runner with our group booking deposit Total paid $3, 120 USD — $4, 749 NZD, that was paid to his wise account which due to Covid cancelled our trip to MM in 2020 which was taking us to stay at Hilo bay Hostel.
Initial Comms was great and option to refund half our deposit too.
We chose to continue to support Hilo Bay Hostel by carrying our booking over in the hope we’d get to travel to MM in 2021.
On finding out MM are not having physical audience back in Dec 2020, I emailed Scott to ask about our options to gain a refund of sorts or to carry over our booking again.
Unfortunately I have had any response since Dec 2020, I am sad that this has occurred and that my family and I are out of pocket by $4, 749 NZD/$3, 120 USD with no further communication 😢
On a brighter note, our surprise edition to our family arrived safely on Thursday morning, a little boy 🌀

Stanley, the owner, is extremely kind and gracious. The building is over 100 years old. We enjoyed the authenticity of the Old Hilo Town vibe. Being a hostel, it has a more functional feel for the traveler. There is also a selection of to read and enjoy. Community style meals can also be enjoyed. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m sure my fellow travelers will agree this is a nice spot.

Wonderful staff. Walking distance from island-wide bus stops, pubs, restaurants, parks, grocery stores, gas stations, farmers market, countless shops, museums and not to mention the Pacific Ocean. Fully stocked kitchen and clean rooms and bathrooms. I could go on and on. Hilo Bay hostel made my vacation.

Amazing. Hilo Bay Hostels has been one of the highlight of our trip. The new owner, Stanley, gave us the most heartwarming welcome when we first arrived. The hostel has a lot of space, cosy, clean, kitchen is big and fun to cook in, free coffee and the location is the best in town. Nearby coffee shops, the grocery store, nice restaurants and the ocean is less than a minute walk away. We could even watch the sunrise from our window every morning.
Price is fair and even cheap for Hawaii. We were suppose to stay 2 nights and ended up staying for a little over a week. People were very friendly and the layout of the hostel makes it very easy to meet new people. Hostel is calm and it's a good vibes only zone. Free Wi-Fi too.
Loved our experience. Couldn't recommend enough staying at this place. Stanley is putting his heart and soul in this place, and it shows. Cheers to a great place, even better memories made there and to our friendly hosts!

It was very quiet and clean a good place for rest and in a very convenient part of hilo.

A little pricey. But a great old place, right in the center of things. Shared kitchen, bathroom, YiFi. Cleen.

Pretty nice place, staff was very friendly, the lady who cleaned the kitchen allowed me to come back after the kitchen had closed so I could get my clothes out of the drier, and the staff made an effort to strike up conversations and be personal. I had a good stay there!

First, something I really didn’t appreciate is how the staff will opt to kick you out at check out. I had to argue to stay to get a little more work done before leaving, but I paid for my night and I was literally the only one in the building, it’s not like I had taken up someone’s space. I found this to be rude enough for me not to stay here again. I was also told that prior to “officially” checking in a guest was denied the Wi-Fi password and another guest denied the ability to check in early even though there were beds available (I just let him sleep in my bed because he was tired). So service-wise I’m disappointed and would recommend a stay elsewhere. Cleanliness is a solid 3. Some pets are ok but mostly an old, musty feeling and bathrooms aren’t terribly clean. Beds were ok. Water pressure and showers would get a 2. All in all, for the price, they should be spending more for better building upkeep and be a little more flexible toward their guests; they’re literally driving guests away. That’s upsetting to me.

Shows availability on Hostelworld and let you book… but office is closed at 9pm… arrived at 10pm and they tell me they are sold but. On hostelworld beds are stil available the time I arrived at 10pm.

Haven't stayed overnight but from what I saw of it, the Hilo Bay Hostel was very spacious, clean, and had a good bathroom set up. The location is great as well!

I've stayed there for years oartly because I liked the owner and the manager. It's recently changed hands and that friendly family feeling left too plus the lodging prices increased by 50% Ouch! I guess good things don't last forever…

Inn Ok! They charged me one night too many and I wanted to get a refund after my trip and I never got an answer!

Nice location downtown, the lady at reception was welcoming and pleasant. Interesting building, would have preferred it being more clean or modern for the cost compared to other hostels on the island but overall it was a good experience. Fresh bedding is provided for each guest and check in is straight forward. Kind of an awkward vibe but it's good if you just need a place to sleep, not so much meet people.

There is nothing really wrong with this place but I wouldn’t call it a "hostel". Some facts: — you feel more like being in some kind of training camp: kitchen closes (for no obvious reason) at 9.30pm, light in the common area gets switched off at 10pm, you are only allowed to whisper after that, there is no other room to sit together and talk, no alcohol on property after 10pm — the admin staff barely talks to you, only for check-in. When you have questions, you don’t feel welcome to ask but actually you have to push actively to get information from them. You get the feeling that they are annoyed to answer you rather than happy to help you out — check-out is at 11am, so I got out of my room before that and sat in the common area to book the next accommodation. At 11.10am I was approached and told to leave the property completely, not only leave my room/bed. I could stay a few hours longer and use the kitchen and internet, but only for an additional fee. There is of course nothing wrong with that from a law and property conditions perspective. However, I've never experienced something like that before in any hostel. Conclusion: The place is okay to crash for a night or two, but you should not expect any kind of kindness and for sure no typical positive hostel vibe but rather a depressing atmosphere.

I really like the atmosphere here. Very relaxing and cozy space. There weren't many things to do and go nearby but if you have a car, it wouldn't be a problem. Surely I would like to stay again.

Great place, awesome service and advice, super clean, ultra friendly guests, I fully recommend! Need any advice? Mariano will gladly inform you and he knows virtualy everything about the island. Thanks for a lovely stay!

Place has potential, beautiful old building. It is dirty and they don't provide simple things like soap in the bathroom? There is a group of families living here and the vibe is really awkward. There are random people living here I feel like I'm intruding in their home and I'm not welcome… Just a weird place and lots of homeless people right outside.

It's alright. Like it's fine there's a few niggles and I'm an experienced hostel traveller. There's bugs in the room, cockroaches and a lizard on my last night. The windows were open and flies and things you kind of accept but cockroaches no. This whole it's Hawaii thing doesn't fly I've stayed on the other islands and Australia that also have cockroaches and have never seen any in the rooms. They'll charge you to use the facilities if you stay after 12pm on the day you check out which I've never experienced before. Hilo isn't exactly a place you want to hang out in either. Rooms could do with a good blitz there were clumps of hair and dust. But I've seen worse on that front. It's got a bit of an odd vibe but you still meet people. There's not really any security people can just walk in off the street and often sheltered from the rain in the entrance. It's very close to bus stop for the Volcanoes and on the same road as some beautiful waterfalls. So overall could be worse but it doesn't really have any competition so doesn't have to improve just keep cheap rates.

Old place but a ton of character. Big open common area with a variety of rooms around it. Staff was most helpful if a bit mellow.

This is a great hostel! Friendly staff, helpful when we asked about the last open restaurant in Hilo after 9pm! Giant and equipped kitchen! Very clean bathroom. Possible to do laundry for $1.5 and $2 for dryer! I recommend!

Good place, not free of cockroaches, but it's Hawaii so that's expected. Bathrooms are small, but everything's fairly clean!

Albert G.

Friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. The common area is large and comfortable. The shared rooms have bunk beds. There is a common use kitchen that has everything you need. The farmers market is right down the street. There are a ton of things to do within walking distance.

Jasmine J. H

Friendly staff. Soft pillows. Almost new beds. Great tea. Cute puppy and they have these parrots that kiss aaaaaa lot.

Francisco P.

A very comfortable, economical, and access to various things and places.

David P.

Clean rustic vibe. Beautiful wooden tables and chairs. The owner Scott is super kind. I never stayed overnight but my interactions there were great.

Kaysley K.

I really liked this hostel. I wasn't sure where to park so that was confusing. The host let me check in late which I appreciated. Seemed clean enough. The area outside was a little noisy when trying to fall asleep… building was unique. The staff was a bit distracted and unprofessional but I would stay here again.

I liked this place a lot. It was way less expensive than a hotel, & if you're ok with sharing a room with others it's in a prime location. Located a hop, skip & a jump away from the heart of Hilo this place is old-timey, the staff is kind & the showers hot. The only reason it's not a 5 star is because it can get kinda loud from parties around the area. Still definitely recommend. Barefoot Approved.

Paragon L.

Highly recommend. Will stay again. Great historic spot, great location close to everything.

Miroslava F.

Great place with amazing service for the price you pay.
My girlfriend and I got stacked with no place to stay in a rainy and cold night.
Brad's smile was so comforting when he checked us in.
We made new friends there and enjoyed so very much our 2 night stay in the hostel.
Keep up the good work guys!

Doug S.

I would Highly recommend the Hilo Hostel. I've stayed here 4 times when flying into Hilo and provides for a soft arrival. Scott and Terry are great people and make you feel very welcomed… The others people staying also are part of the whole Hilo Hostel experience. Multilingual and broad diversity of people with reasonable rates. … Everything I was looking for.

James T.

This hostel isn't perfect. It's in an old building (former hotel), and the showers aren't hot. But what makes the place worth five stars is the management. I had checked in on a Thursday morning before going to my property in Naalehu to do some work. That afternoon, while on my way back to Hilo, I blacked out and hit a solid lava embankment, totalling my pickup and putting myself in the hospital. Not too long after being admitted, I received a call from Terry, the HBH manager…. He said, "We're here for you. What do you need? " I almost dropped the phone. I had spoken to Terry for maybe five minutes. We were a small step from being total strangers. I mentioned that my reading glasses had been lost in the wreck. Fifteen minutes later someone from the hostel appeared in my hospital room with a new pair of reading glasses. That is the aloha spirit, and that's worth far more than a hot shower.

Paul B. D.

I do not enjoy sharing a room with strangers, but this hostel rocks for the over night kick it spot. Great Wi-Fi, cool history, and much aloha. I will definitely spend more time here on my overnight trips to Hilo.
