Always clean, older hotel. Nice people, great location with nice view of the channel and the ski hill. Ask for the water view.

My hubby and I stayed at the Magnuson FSI this week. Our waterfront room was very spacious and clean! Breakfast on the 7th floor at Bonfire was awesome—very friendly staff and yummy food. The view was spectacular! The FSI staff was very professional and friendly! I would highly recommend staying here—-as we will next time we are in Houghton. Being so close to downtown was nice as you could take a walk down there or on the waterfront. Thank youuuu to everyone at Magnuson FSI in Houghton, Michigan. You made our stay so pleasant and wonderful! Have a wonderful day!

I rented a whirlpool suite a few weeks ago. I paid almost 250$ for the room and my daughter had a friend stay with us because it was her birthday coming up soon at that time. We had cake and ice cream for her and some balloons in the room. The balloons we had gotten had the round confetti in them and the girls wanted to pop them before we left. I used a trash bag and cleaned up all the garbage, I piled the linens for the housekeeper even! I left some money and all the pop can…s for a tip and checked out early that day. This week in the mail I received a bill for 150$ for a carpet shampooing fee! They sent me the pictures (thank god so I have them for proof)
So my boyfriend and I went to the hotel to speak to the manager. He told me that I’m lucky he didn’t charge me more than 150$ and the head housekeeper (dawn I think) yelled at me for not leaving a bigger tip for the housekeeper! I have this all recorded I can’t make this up. Moral of the story don’t stay here and accidentally spill a soda or anything because they will charge you 150$ to shampoo the carpet and tell you you’re lucky they didn’t charge more.

This comfy hotel starts off a chain of charming and quaint businesses along the main street through Hancock / Houghton. It's always a good night sleep in the very big bed ann the rooms are ginormous. If you get a room with a view of the water, it's breathtaking in both the summer and the winter. Their breakfast upstairs is hearty and plentiful for the reasonable price and the staff are always accommodating.

The room is clean, spacious, and well designed. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. The restaurant on the top floor is fantastic as well!

The hotel was definitely older and musky. The staff was super friendly though, and the rooms and views were nice.

Just stayed 1 night as a stopover on our way farther up into the back country and we were SO pleasantly surprised! We had our dog with us and dog friendly hotels are frequently gross. Our pet friendly room was dated but very clean! No smell, etc. Breakfast in the morning was good, though the coffee was miserable. The front desk staff was SO NICE! We will definitely be back the next time we are heading up into the Keweenaw.

Wow! The restaurant alone (food and breathtaking view) was worth it! All of the staff were awesome! Would definitely stay there again.

Decent hotel, nice location & comfortable bed. Friendly staff, but they need more workers in their restaurant. Sunday breakfast, the restaurant was under staffed & I felt bad for the 1 person trying to manage service. Still, overall, a good place to stay!

The rooms were clean. Cleaning staff and bar staff friendly. Front counter girl at check in was rude. Pool was closed the first day here for maintenance. A wedding was booked 2 floors up. Would have been great to be forewarned about this. As you have drunks up and down hallways slamming doors and the music was thumping late into the night. For 121 bucks a night? I will not ever be coming back here again.

Comfortable room. Clean, well stocked with towels, bedding, etc. Breakfast was a good step up from standard hotel fare. Very friendly staff. My only issue is that the external doors, even those fast away from the front desk have no locks in the middle of the night.

The Franklin Square Inn in Houghton was the perfect location for our stay. It is situated on the river right downtown in charming Houghton. The staff at the hotel are very welcoming and you can definitely feel the Upper Peninsula. I would definitely choose The Franklin Square Inn if in Houghton again for its welcoming atmosphere, location, comfort and cleanliness and incredible view!

Hotel is great. However, service at the restaurant has been consistently slow over the past few years. I would order another drink as soon as you get your first. The next one probably will finally be there by the time you finish the first.

The restaurant had okay food… But the service was awful, the glasses and utensils were dirty. We were the only ones there, and they could not properly check on us for drinks or anything. It was like we were all by ourselves. Such a shame, because it's a great looking place with a great view. It's a diamond in the rough… In the right hands it would rake in the bucks. Sadly… Its mismanaged.

Breakfast credit offered, though breakfast was the only downside experienced here. Merit's only 2 stars by this reviewer due to poor food preparation and decidedly substandard service. Awesome food and drink menu. Definitely recommend the steak bites and guacamole! On the drink menu, Houghton County Fair is amazing, with or without the alcohol :)

Good food, and polite professional staff who are very cheerful. I attended a conference banquet on the 7th floor and had a really pleasant time. University functions which I've attended at the Magnuson banquest room have been a real treat and enjoyment as well.

Comfy bed, large tub and shower, the room itself had more space than most other places. Friendly staff from front desk on. The restaurant up stars was convenient and so good! Getting the complementary drinks upon check in was nice too! The perfect evening after a long day of travel! Thank you!

While it is widely recognized the Magnuson name has a less than stirling reputation acrossed the Great Lakes region, Franklin Square is a happy exception. The rooms need updating. And I just don't mean new lamps, new countertops. Im talking about the peeling wall paper, the brown spots from leaks on the ceilings. The "Jacuzzi tub" only had one properly working jet the others barley bubbled. The fridge shelves fell all the time and froze everything. The pool area is slightly awkward, no windows. The restaurant upstairs had horrible service and even worse food. My husband's scrambled eggs smelt and tasted horrible, he couldn't even eat them. My over easy eggs were not done. Our friend asked if she could have green pepper in her omelette and the waitresses response was " well I'll check but we're really busy" her boyfriend ordered eggs and bacon, bacon smelt and tasted like it was old, his coffee didn't come we had to ask for it again. Overall, fine place to stay for an overnight situation. Will say that the staff in the hotel we're nice and friendly.

Rooms need to be remodeled. Seems to me it may be an old hospital? Not sure. Nice that they give food and drink vouchers but I soon realized why; the food in the lounge on the 7th floor is terrible; and the service even worse. For what I paid (250$\night) this place is a joke. I've gotten much better for much less. Great area, nice people. Hope this place gets it together; look forward to bringing my kids sometime.

Great pet friendly place to stay. The complementary made-to-order breakfast and drink tickets were an added bonus. We'll definitely stay here again.

Bonfire Restaurant on the seventh floor has top quality food and drinks with the best view you will find in all of Houghton.

A decent highrise big city feel hotel in a smaller size town, featuring a top floor restaurant and bar with panoramic views of waterway and downtown, while serving substandard fare.

Nice place. Great restaruant and bar. Centrally located. Easy walk to great food, the KBC for a local brew and tge sights. Will be back again.

Unexpected fridge and microwave provided in the room. Very clean. Large bathroom. There was a discount for Tech Alumni, which was a pleasant surprise. Overall, very nice.

I've stayed at this hotel a dozen times and this last time they went above and beyond by giving my room a call to ensure that I had the proper taxi shuttle to the airport. Without that call I would have missed the flight, not to mention I was the one working the flight. Thank you!

This is the best place to stay in Houghton! You are within walking distance of their quaint downtown and the view from their top floor bar and restaurant is so beautiful. The food is fantastic as well. Rooms are a bit outdated but as I have stayed here a dozen times for work, never had a single problem there.

Spent 4 nights while attending a conference. While the building is older it's nice and clean. Food has been very good. Enjoyed the breakfast and drink vouchers.

Great hospitality and they have done well to give the rooms the modern commodities it needs. It's still an older style hotel but it is very cozy and makes you feel at home. Overall a great location and would definitely stay here again.

The food in the hotel is usually good but in thr graduation day of MTU their food and service was not good at all.

The hotel was very dated, but it very nice. The rooms were spacious and clean. The restaurant food was pretty good, and the view from the restaurant was amazing. We received coupons for a free appetizer and free breakfast. It's extremely close to the MTU campus which is convenient if you're a parent up there.

Great location right on the river. I stayed here for three nights for a work trip and my experience was great. The staff was really great and friendly. They have a good sign lection of beers and cocktails at the bar with a great view on the seventh floor. The only problem is that this hotel is extremely outdated. The décor is something out of your grandparents house, the gym has a treadmill and one of those one in all cable machines. Overall a great hotel but could definitely do with some upgrading.

It's a nice hotel. I go to school in the Area and its location in town has always made it simple to visit my parents when they are in town. The rooms are nice but sometimes get really warm. The breakfast in the restaurant on the top is also pretty good.

Went to stay there for a doctors appointment in Houghton. Once you walk through the front lobby, the hotel looks very nice. I was very, very dissapointed when I walked through my room. The first thing we noticed is that the room stunk. It was not a big deal at first but the smell never went away. It was as if there was old food hidden somewhere in the room. The bed sheets and bed also did not smell that great. They weren't completely dirty but they did not smell clean. The whole room felt dirty to me, like it was not sanitary. The price of the hotel was very high compared to the looks and service. We wish we would have stayed at the hotel down the street: it looked nicer and was cheaper.

Avoid expedia! front desk here did heroic efforts to undo the mess from Amoma who are subcontracted by expedia. Clean rooms, nice view. My only complaint is the coffee was a little watery.

Comfortable beds, decent shower pressure, everything was clean and perfect upon our arrival. Great place to stay and it's close to the water if you want a water view room.

Excellent. This hotel offers their customers a wide variety of good quality options. All in one place. For example, the staff is meticulously nice, the staff to the restaurant is abundantly equipped with excellent food, entertainment, and holds great manners towards a individual or a crowd. ; overall, the hotel is the best on the waterfront as far as location, hospitality, educated staff and management (michigan technological university) and excellent business ethics for themselves and their customers. Great. They are pet friendly to friendly dogs and offer a great place to stay even if you are not from the upper peninsula of Michigan.

The restaurant has no one else here and its 7pm night of career fair. That should have tipped us off.
