Good for an overnight stay. Bed was decent, but not amazing. Things were broken in the room before arrival, most likely from earlier occupants, and were fixed to a point that if you touched it again, it would break, leaving me hoping I wouldn't get charged for it. The floor was dirty, as well as it being extremely humid inside the room. Overall though, it was a good night for me and I was out most of the day.

Small but efficient room with micro, fridge Good location. Fairly quiet. Good value for Santa Cruz.

My experience was just fine no complaints. The rooms are clean and the ones with kitchens are surprisingly big. The staff is really friendly. Conveniently located, Overall a good hotel for your average person.

The Hitching Post is a nice place to stay because it's located in a really small words with easy to get stores or the beach. They have rooms have kitchens there you can rent by the week or the month if you want.

Danny is the best its clean spacious centrally located and has a wonderful vibe security is top notch if you come here stay there hands down the best hotel in Santa cruz.

This place is great. My fiancee and my stepdaughter and I stayed here for one night and loved it so much that this is going to be our regular place to stay whenever we come to santa Cruz.

Is this place cozy, romantic, nice? NO. Does it have the cheapest rooms in town? YES. The first time we stayed there, they put us in an oversized room with a separate kitchen area. Everything was clean and quiet. For the price, it was excellent. However, on our most recent stay, the same-price room was much smaller, not super clean, and the people in the room next door sounded like they were fighting/partying/smoking meth All Night Long. So, you might get lucky… or not.

Well, rooms are fine. However, the Preuser still had a Doggybag in the fridge, which was already there for a long time from the smell. Lets look deeply at cleanliness… OK for one night.

When I checked in, the really affable host gave me a gift bag with potato chips, granola bars and a bottled water. Super clean room with all the standard amenities. But I'd trade that gift bag for another bed. It was the firmest mattress I've ever been on. Cement sidewalks are softer than this mattress.

I got the smallest room right next to the office I got the smallest room right next to the office although the bathroom was clean and spacious. The next morning I left to go have breakfast with my mom up the coast in Davenport and got a flat tire and couldn't return to get my hygiene and my makeup on my return to retrieve my belongings I was told by the owner-manager that his Maids threw away my no more than a groceries size bag full of Estee Lauder and Clinique as well as MAC makeup so I took it upon myself to go talk to the maid one of them replied with no no no and the other one said Maria and said I'm going to go to the laundry room and came back with just my shower products and not my makeup bag while the other housekeeper laughed at me I don't recommend this place at at all very unprofessional I even gave her a $10 tip.

Retro and camp! Make sure and book one of the rooms with a full kitchen, dining room, living room and bedroom. They are updated with taste. Very clean and the landscaping is lovely — I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Very decently priced. Was kept cleaned. Was nice having bedroom/bathroom/kitchen setup. Staff were all very nice. Was rated only a 2 star, but I think that's due to the area, not due to actual quality. We had no concerns.

I think the price could be better but I also think it's worth staying there vs other accommodations in the area.

Spent Christmas there and the convenience of having a full kitchen made for a wonderful Christmas dinner with all the trimmings!

Stayed a night as the price between Christmas an New Years was the best I could find and took advantage of the 10% online booking discount. Had a good night of sleep. Host seemed curt last night, but was more friendly this morning. Got a large room with the kitchen, though I didn’t need it. Posted signs tell you to see the host for amenities to use in the kitchen as it is completely barren… seems like they should have some utensils at least, but maybe they’ve experienced theft. Shampoo and soap offerings were minimal. Bring your own! This place really could do with a fresh change of furniture, fixtures and color scheme-it’s really dated. It was quiet though, and nice to be away from the downtown area.

Got the room with kitchen and was no utensils to cook with and office refused to provide any even tho their was a sign in room saying they would. Guy at front desk was extremely rude and charged 20 dollars from our deposit because we checked out at 12 not 11

We stayed here for 3 nights on a family visit to Santa Cruz and really enjoyed it. Saving money was a big priority on this trip, and Hitching Post was one of the more reasonably priced motels in the area. I made my reservations on the phone with Dhani, who also greeted us at check-in. The room was spacious, clean and cheerfully decorated. It had ample TV channels and strong Wi-Fi. The grounds were also well-maintained with flower pots and patio chairs placed near some rooms, and a nice pool area with an adjacent shrub garden. The only issue we had was that the parking lot was quite cramped; we drive a big Dodge 3/4 ton, so we had to navigate very carefully in order to not hit fellow guests' cars. On our 3rd night, someone crashed into a power pole, and severed it at the base, so the entire motel lost power that morning. Obviously that had nothing to do with the motel or the staff, but it caused some consternation, namely unable to brew coffee. Still, if our travels ever bring us back this way, we'd gladly stay at the Hitching Post Studios Inn again.

Clean rooms. A little dated but very comfortable. Book online to get better prices than the front desk gives.

Great family owned business. They take pride in their rooms. Clean, friendly, full size fridge with the option to rent cookware. The place itself is about a 10 minute drive from the boardwalk. Quiet at night and well lit.

The waitress was super nice and attentive and the view of the beach was beautiful, but the food itself wasn't anything to brag about.

I wouldn't say the place is dated at all. I've stayed all over the place and this hotel clearly is working on modernizing. Key Points — Fast Wi-Fi — Excellent AC with a digital panel for control — I just turned it on to check but the TV was decent with a good amount of free channel's — Extra standing fan to use in the closet — Huge Room — Fridge — Coffee Maker — Microwave — Parking 6 feet from your door. Extremely convenient and makes your vehicle feel more secure.

Great place to stay! Wonderful… and so clean! Yes it is dated… but has charm… and the owner is very friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend the Hitching Post to anyone visiting Santa Cruz. The full kitchen was an added plus!

Great safe place to stay. Clean quiet with amenities and even a little gift bag from the front desk. The place was centrally located between downtown Capitola and the beach boardwalk. This place was very reasonable in price and it was very quaint. Danny at the front desk was a very lovely man. Would definitely stay at this place again.

Bottom Line Up Front: Sleep quality problems and noise issues are abundant here. This is a good place to stay for price-obsessed people only. There are other options in town for $10-20 more a night, and though I can't comment on their quality, I would not recommend picking this one purely for price. Reasons for 2 Stars: 1) Online reservations do not charge your card, you have to re-swipe when you arrive at the hotel. 2) Do not, under any circumstances, agree to sleep in room 100; request a refund and find somewhere else to stay if this is the case. The hotel is owned/operated by a family (which I empathize with entirely), but their personal housing is directly next door to room 100. A couple issues are caused by this: First, there is a door from their unit into your unit, with no ability to lock it from your side. Second, you can hear everything they say and do. Third, their housing is connected to the front office and a bell rings any time someone comes through the front door, which you can also hear. 3) I requested to change rooms after my first night, which was graciously accomodated (this is the reason there is more than 1 star). However, the second room (103) had no AC (it had a thermostat which didn't work and upon inspection, had been disabled). 4) Of the two rooms I stayed in, you could easily hear noise from outside.

We pulled up super late after driving for 12 hours. The manager was very friendly and inviting (even gave us a little snack bag). The rooms are very large and feature full kitchens, dining areas, walk in closet and a nice hot shower. Only spent the one night but it is a cool place!

My daughter and I stayed here for a week in July of last year. Manager was very nice, area was pleasant and the room was very comfortable! Will definitely be going back this summer!

I have stayed at the Hitching Post more then 10 times in my life, and always thought it was a decent place. But when I tried to get a room the last time, apparently I can't stay there anymore, because last time I stayed, I checked out about half an hour late! Seriously?! I don't know how the motels/hotels stay in business in Santa Cruz?! So many of the people running them are just rude! They lost my business, obviously, and my money is green & spends the same as anyone else's!

Newly painted everything here is pretty nice and new, and the management is excellent. Seriously clean, and smoke free. The outdoor smoking rule is obviously militantly enforced now. I've heard bad things about this place in the past but they just aren't so.

Daniel at the front desk is very rude and inappropriate. A sorry excuse for a man and employee. Every room smells like smoke and the service is terrible. Don't go here unless you want your vacation to be ruined!

Terrible customer service the person at the front desk was extremely rude and did some very inappropriate things. I will never be going back and unfortunate that this hotel's employee tainted the ending of our trip. Would not recommend to anyone!

Well we booked a double bed room with kitchenette. Pricing was over 300, rediculous. The unit has no air conditioning and amenities in the room are minimal. The kitchen is large, but they give you no sugar or creamer for coffee. At the prices we paid, I at least expected the room to stay under 97 degrees. My advice, book a room elsewhere.

I'm normally okay with the average motel that I end up booking last minute. But this motel I would recommend for anybody. The smell that I encountered inside the bedroom was horrible and the service was ridiculous. My mom who was visiting from out of state couldn't even eat lunch with me inside my hotel because the owner was standing outside and told her it was 25$ to hangout. I would strongly recommend everyone to choose a different place to stay for the night. This place is a no go.

Greed best describes this Business. I had booked a room for a Funeral I was to attend, and unfortunately the date had changed twice, and then cancelled altogether. "Danny" was the person I dealt with. He let me change the date for a $60.00 increase, but would not let me cancel. When the Funeral was cancelled, I called back and explained, 5 days before the due date. I even cancelled my Card. Well this Greedy company took $189.00 from me, taking the Bus ticket funds for my Daughter to get home from Texas. GREED! why would you take money from someone you gave nothing to? GREED! I would never use this Motel.

This is an excellent place to stay on a budget. Especially the unit with the kitchen. The stag=ff is superb. The manager will take care of any needs you have and the cleaning staff is wonderful. They really get an A for effort.

I stayed july 2013 I payed $111 as well as my sister did. I was gone all day from the room because their was fighting from neighbors. When I came back it was 12 at night and chilly so I asked for exta blankets and the owner try to charge me 10 dollars I was upset I coulndnt get blackets and she would try to charge me 10 dollars to get the exta blacket. After I spend all that money for a room that wasnt peaceful and when taking a shower the water smelled like bleach even when you drink it, I dont recommend it.

This hotel is a complete and total rip off! My husband and I went so spend a weekend in Santa Cruz, We called this place and asked if they had rooms, they said they did. My husband asked if they could hold it until we got there as we were in traffic and it was already 1am. They said they could hold the room just needed a credit card number. My husband provided them with his number TO HOLD THE ROOM ONLY! We ended up stuck in traffic and not making it until the next morning. We NEVER checked into the room yet they still charged our credit card $200. My husband called and the wonderful lady said oh yeah we charged it and pretty much told him we are out of luck they would not refund our money! Really? You are going to charge someone for a dump that they didn't even get the chance to sleep in? There is NO signature from either my husband or myself to charge that card. You would think they would treat their customer better. Well, to small claims court we go. See you in a few.
