Reviews of Palihotel San Francisco 3*
Loved the quirkiness and the friendly staff.
They double billed me and are trying to claim I was there two nights instead of one. I think they are working off the books because they don’t seem to have any accurate records.
We were discounted 150 euros from the total vice of 600 euros because the smart TV did not work. Without us complaining about anything. Congratulations on fairness. Nice experience.
Ambiance was great, I loved the decor and the live jazz music, and the service was on point… but the food was just medicore. I thought the starters were actually better than any of the entrees we ordered, and one entree is about $20-30 so you expect it to be higher quality. The menu is not very big so options were limited, however I did like the beets salad and the pesto pasta. The portion sizes could be a bit bigger for how much they charge!
Very accommodating. Love their white and red themes in the room. Very clean as well. They offered late check out until 1 PM. Free breakfast in the morning. Very centrally located.
Fantastic hotel. The location is situated nicely, with a parking garage available across the street. The staff are exceptionally friendly, and we're quite accommodating. The hotel itself has a very old style elevator which is neat, though a bit slow. I wasn't too worried about this because I took the stairs except when carrying luggage upon check-in and check-out. The room was nice, though quite small, which again, was just fine for me; I wasn't looking to spend a lot of time in the room itself. The rooms were equipped with a higher-quality-than-most hair dryer, and an iron and board. The bed was very comfortable, and the pillows were thick and cushy. There was a speed-adjustable ceiling fan and the window opened to allow the cool SF air into the room. The bathroom was well-equipped and comfortable for my use. There was a large stand in shower, but no tub. Overall I really enjoyed my stay here, and would definitely consider staying again.
This is evidently an older hotel and you'll immediately be geared by they're 100+ year old elevator, but fear not! Everything else has been obviously renovated and provides all the usual comforts for modern guests. I found the rooms quite comfortable and good sized for a couple. My only minor complain is the claustrophobic views, but that's expected for the price and definitely a fair compromise. The free breakfast was minimal and consisted of bagels and cereal. The hotel is nicely located and only a few blocks away from Market St and the Financial District. I would definitely consider staying here again.
The room and bathroom were nice, clean, and newly remodelled. I felt like I was mislead on some of the hotel amenities, notably the pet-friendliness and air-conditioned aspects. When I arrived with my dog in the evening, the host (newly hired) explained to me that the hotel was only service dog friendly and that I would have to pay a $250 pet fee. I chose to board my dog in a nearby kennel instead. When I entered my stuffy room, I found that the air conditioner was completely non-existent. Luckily that night I was able to cool down the room to a relatively comfortable temperature by opening the window and using the ceiling fan. The next morning, I explained my concerns to a manager and he quickly rectified the situation. I was partially refunded a 1 night stay to cover my dog's boarding expenses and was allowed to cancel the rest of my booked nights. Gave 5 stars for this hotels custom service alone.
Showed up today. They oversold the rooms. Routed me to a different hotel. It wasn't as good. Bait and switch. very disappointing experience. I don't recommend staying here.
Do not stay here. This was another lesson on why small boutique hotels are not worth it, and staying at a major chain is always a safer bet. No AC, no parking, $40/night parking extra at a garage a block away, no front area to even drop bags, trash on window seal/“balcony” area that always actually clocked form access. How the trash even got here and so much I kept wondering. Stain in the carpet. Old sketch elevator that works sometimes, and when it was working the hotel staff was always using it! So it was essentially a walk up, and hey have 7 floors. And worst off all, after pre paying for then room a week in advance, upon check in they wanted another $150 deposit, and after waiting a full week after checkout for the deposit to be returned, I instead woke up on day to another 3 night charge from them to my account, over week after we left, how is that even possible!?! Still waking to get refunded all. Be careful here.
Took a long time to check-in, rooms were VERY small without any natural lighting; the bed seemed dirty and without a sheet on the duvet; over charged for room after check-out. Good location though.
Very good bed, very clean and large room in quiet.
Otherwise, no equipment: The cabinet of the refrigerator is… empty, no kettle and no glasses or tumblers…
Unimaginable considering the price of the hotel!
Finally second night very noisy (jazz club on the second floor).
So I withdraw a star.
Since quiet nights so I put my third star.
The gentleman from the interview brought us a refrigerator and a capsule coffee maker! Waouhhhhhh Great!
The people of the maintenance and/or maintenance are the nicest and the most helpful.
Stayed here for one night and I can honestly say that no one should have to stay here again. There is no parking on site and no valet. Just a public garage around the corner. Yay dragging your luggage down a dirty street with no bellhop and homeless people asleep on the street! Once we checked in we went up the tiny and terrifying elevator. It’s a historic building and the rooms are large but the carpets were stained. In the middle of the night the police arrested a man who was screaming at the top of his lungs, outside our window. They have “free breakfast” which amounts to crappy coffee. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else.
Top location just minutes from Union Square. Although the hotel is located directly behind a tunnel, the background noise was not disturbing. Breakfast was very basic (bagel, coffee, fruit) but adequate. The room was cleaned every day and the bed was very comfortable.
Frustratingly poor execution. I travel about 100 nights per year. I thought I was trying a nice boutique hotel. Outside of a stay at a dingy (low) quality inn at SeaTac airport this was the worst value for money in the last 4 years. Poor front desk service. Took me 15 min to check in. The front desk attendant prioritized 3 other calls over me physically waiting in front of him after he partially checked me in. The elevator was out of order and I lugged my baggage up 6 flights. The room was dirty with carpets were worn and poorly cleaned. The TV did not work. I did not receive an email with my receipt after explicitly requesting one. When calling back it took 10 min for them to find my reservation (and I'm still waiting to receive the email copy of my receipt). Poor value at 440$ for the night I'm SF. I liked the pastries. Towels and bedding were clean, shower was nicely spacious, nice to have a ceiling fan. Do not recommend.
Room on the 8th floor and 1 broken elevator. Noisy room, technology partially defective.
The place was really nice. It's a bit old fashioned style but I really liked that. There's a garage right across the street so the parking was really easy. We didn't get up early enough for the breakfast but the room was nice and had a really big shower. We had a really great stay.
The Mystic Hotel looked cool but once we arrived customer service was lackluster. The room was so dirty. The end tables, headboard, and table were so dusty. The carpet was very stained and needed vacuumed. The elevator was an older elevator that had to keep getting reset to work. I was so bummed because I asked if I could pay for a room upgrade or have flowers or such for my husband and I’s anniversary and they said they would handle it and nothing was done. Horrible experience.
Good location to union square, nicely appointed room. Fantastic taco place 2 doors down. Elevator is dodgy, 108 year old. Windows are single pane and you hear Every thing outside. Bar/restaurant on 2nd floor with loud music. Don't get room on 3rd floor if you need to go to bed early. Right on BART line.
I would not recommend spending your money here if it was the last hotel in San Francisco. We had booked a two night stay here over the New Years holiday weekend. Our first night with them we got locked out of the hotel with the front desk staff and other guest that were staying in the hotel for over an hour. Do to there security system going down and head wait for some staying in the hotel to come down to let us in. Then the second day of staying here we had a woke to find out the hotel had no hot water through four the whole hotel. You would think and this point you would have least have had the hotel staff try to at least be apologetic for so many things going wrong. Not to mention on also one of the most expensive weekends of the year in booking rooms and paying top dollar. I had reached out to the hotel GM through my concierge service. To never even hear back from them. It's very unprofessional and they simply do no respect to there guest.
We chose to eat Chistmas Eve dinner at the Burrit Room and Tavern. The experience as a whole was very pleasant. Prompt service with quality drinks, as well as a nice menu for the night. We would definitely consider returning in the future.
So much charm! Really enjoyed our stay from our quaint room to a great dinner. Nitro-cold brew coffee with complimentary breakfast was such a great plus. We'll be back! Hopefully soon ;)
I really like the location of the hotel. It is close to many touristic spots. However, the staff is not very caring and my windows are broken. Towels get changed every day, if you like it or not. Nevertheless, the bed is comfortable and it is pretty silent at night.
Fantastic place, very homely and the rooms huge.
The hotel was just okay. The room was tiny, the sheets were stained, the room was stuffy, but the bathroom was large and clean. We also had issues with the toilet and safe within minutes of each other and it took awhile to get someone to help out… Glad it didn't take place the morning we were checking out. The stay included breakfast and the coffee was good. The location might bother some as there are a lot of homeless around, but they did not bother us. It's centrally located which is good. Unloading luggage and parking are a bit awkward. As I said in the beginning, it was just ok. I probably wouldn't stay here again unless I had to.
Hotel is old and the pipes rattle in the night loud enough to wake people on multiple floors (as evidenced by conversations with both guests and staff). The walls are thin enough to hear everything happening in the adjoining rooms. The fixtures in the bathroom were broken and had been for some time. The windows open to very loud streets and have not been double panes to reduce noise. When I raised these issues to the staff, I was met with complete indifference and dismissive attitudes from everyone including the office manager and general manager, who continually interrupted me while trying to speak. Additionally, the hotel is located on an awful block near Nob Hill, but without any of the charm. There are plenty of other great boutique hotels nearby that you should choose over this dive.
Chic hotel, and nice employees. Breakfast is delicious, but due to the very small offer, a grab and go is more likely to be offered rather than sat down.
LOVE THIS HOTEL! I read a lot of the reviews and was hesitant to stay here. I must say I sincerely ENJOYED my stay. ALL of the staff was extra courteous. I dealt with 3 different front desk clerks, and they were ALL very friendly and informative. I also called for help with opening my windows and they sent two staff members immediately, who were also very nice. There is no AC, but one did not need it with the windows open and ceiling fan above. Yes, the rooms are small, but I don't plan on staying in the room while in SF, only to sleep and relax. The room was very clean and the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. There were no ice machines, but they brought ice when you needed it. I did stay in a room facing the street and not the alley, I think that is important, considering the nice view of the area. Yes, the elevator was slow, but charming as it was an almost 100 year old elevator. The free continental breakfast was Starbuck's coffee and pastries, along with fruit… FRESH and excellent coffee. A perfect light breakfast prior to going out for the day and having lunch later. The bar/restaurant next door was great for a drink and jazz. If you enjoy an off the beaten track hotel, with character and charm… STAY HERE! I visit my child who attends SFAI, and I will make this my hotel on all future visits. Thanks to all that made my experience wonderful. :-)
It is a hotel with charm. The room although small, this very cool. We arrived in the middle of heat wave (37 degrees celsius to San Francisco is a lot! ) and of course you were not prepared because they did not have air conditioning. But it was just bad luck. Otherwise, it is clean, the shower is very good and the bed is comfortable. The breakfast is not included it is paid apart, and the truth, is not anything of another world. Do not have parking, but there is a building across the street is a parking lot huge. Union square is a 1 minute walk and right in the same block there is a walgreens.
We had drinks and bites at the bar lounge. The live music was awesome which is why we choose the place. Our server, Maria took great care of us. Out food and drinks were great. Can't complain about anything accept that a usc rally was there that night.
The place is very well located and it lives up to its name. The breakfast very complete. The only drawback is the elevator (lift). Is of time, but at the worst time (when we were just leaving) it broke down, which meant taking the stairs 5 floors, carrying luggage. Really a setback.
The hotel itself has a great appeal and character. My experience in the room they put me in was unfortunately horrible. Right outside my window was a loud humming fan blower that did not allow me to sleep. I finally couldn't tolerate it and requested to move at 3am. They moved me 1 floor down and down the hallway into a room that was warmer than the others, no ac, no air and I was forced to open the windows that I had to pry open with a tissue box and allow the noise in just so that I can get cool air flowing. At that point I decided to stay up and got no sleep on a busy day. The manager had no additional rooms "so he said" and I was stuck on my visit. If you stay here ask if you can be put into the rooms on the right. (Because I do that know if it was North or South, East or West.
Actually, a very nice hotel.
Modern furnished in old building fabric.
Unfortunately, deductions do exist.
Unfortunately, the safe did not work despite several repairs due to the house technology.
The toilet was once clogged during the stay, which was fixed very quickly during our absence of the evening, however, the room door was not closed again so that every stranger could go into the room.
The windows were — badly insulated — as in almost every hotel on our round trip.
The included breakfast consisted of coffee, croissant and some fruit in the hotel lobby.
Very minimalist even by American standards.
Despite the very good location of the hotel, we would probably not come back.
The cost is not proportionate to the services offered. Small rooms and pretentious furniture.
The hotel itself is nicely situated, the SF highlights are close-by or can be reached easily via Uber. The service in the hotel is not that great, which we have encountered in all our hotels during our 2-week round trip, no hotel receptionist has welcomed us or thanked us for visiting their hotel when we left, I don't care if you mean it but at least you can sincerely pretend you do. To our big surprise the second morning the breakfast buffet was relocated to the reception area with just some leftover croissants, fruit, coffee and tea, whereas the day before breakfast was in a nice big room with lots of choice including juices, cereals, bacon etc. So if you do want to stay here, don't include the breakfast (at a price of $14) and don't go here during hot summer days as there is no ac and the ceiling fan makes a "ticking" sound which makes you think it can drop down on your bed anytime.
Both the location and the hotel are magnificent. But if you have any problem with your reservation — as in my case — don t even expect a response from the staff no matter how hard you try. Lack of professionalism…
Great place for live music and drinks. Dinner was great. Really good beer selection as well.
The service was prompt and the waitress was very polite. We got our drinks in a reasonable amount of time for a busy bar. They were above average for a typical bar. The atmosphere was dimly lite and the decor featured interesting paintings on the walls.
Pleasant place to stay positive overnight. Very helpful staff, rooms are clean. It can be bit noisy as there are some humming generators/ac/no idea what outside.
Very expensive drinks. They were okay, fancier than I normally prefer but tasty enough. Live jazz was actually quite good. Great service.
Nice Hotel, great breakfast, clean rooms, friendly staff.
DO NOT STAY HERE** (see attached picture for bed bug bites) A friend and I booked a room at Mystic for 2 nights to spend the weekend in SF. Little did we know we would eventually wake up in the morning covered in bed bug bites! Right after checking in, we were told the elevator (THE ONLY ELEVATOR) was out of order and we had to carry our luggage up 7 flights of stairs to our room (#707). The elevator was out for the remainder of that day and the next day. The room itself looked nice and was a compact size which we honestly didn't mind, it was perfect for two girls here for a weekend but it was all deceiving. My friend woke up the first morning and her right eye was swollen. We didn't think much of it and thought it was allergies so we quickly dismissed it. The second and final morning we woke up and there was a line of bug bites along her left arm and her right hand. We thought it was hives from an allergic reaction so we quickly checked out that morning and went to Travelers' Urgent Care (Dr. Savage) who then confirmed it was indeed bed bug bites. We rushed on back (after picking up prescribed cortisone cream) to explain to the hotel staff who was not accommodating by any means that Room 707 was infested with bed bugs. The man covering the front desk at the time seemed baffled and didn't believe us. He ACTUALLY asked if we had written record from the doctor confirming the bed bug bites. (?
Loved this place. Great quality rooms, okay breakfast (it wasn't horrible, can't complain for the location and the price), lovely staff, helpful whenever you needed and Jazz nights! Definitely consider this, it was about a 20 minute walk to Market Street and 10 or so minutes from Bloomingdales and a collection of other shops. Tram stops are a stones throw away. Thank you very much guys, greatly appreciated everything.
The room we had was very noisy from the roads, despite being on high floors. The limited toiletries (do note: no cups in room, no shower cap, no toothbrush etc) was not replenished daily. The super slow elevator broke down on one of the days of our stay, and while climbing up that night, my husband was harassed by drunk people standing outside the Lvl2 bar. Customer service via reservations@mystichotel is poor — I did not get reply on my pre arrival questions. But that is not the worst part. We checked out and was told by front desk that we were all set and everything was fine. 2 days later, I got a bank alert that I was charged 5 USD from the Hotel. I wrote to reservations@mystichotel to ask what this was, and was informed by Mohammed that it was for Fiji water from the mini bar in the room. I was really angry because I did NOT consumer anything from the room and I was also told that all was fine when I left the hotel. So why a charge only 2 days later? I wrote back and demanded for the charges to be waived since I did not consume it. Its been 7 days since that email (did not call as IDD will be even more expensive and I already left San Francisco), 4 days since I followed up and still no reply!
Stayed for 2 nights this time and have stayed here previously. Decent size room for the location, clean and comfortable. If you are concerned about noise, ask for a higher floor, since the music from the lounge is fairly audible on the third floor. Customer service was good, I would stay here again.
Centrally located boutique hotel within walking distance to pretty much everything (Union Sq & Chinatown the closest). Great service, but a but noisy as traffic and construction noise can be heard (audible enough to annoy but not loud enough to make a fuss about) through windows fr the 6th floor. The elevator was interesting at the start (it's one of the really old school ones left), but got old quickly as it's quite slow.
Close to Union park and China Town gate. Nice small accolades, but hot and cold continental breakfast items available for guests daily. Clean rooms, historic elevator, not much view from rooms since it's right in the heart of the city. There is a public lounge area behind the lobby desk that can be reserved for private parties but when open is a place to meet other guests. Also a great restaurant and bar on second floor, open most days except holidays.
Nice staff, comfortable rooms, and good food. It is noisy though. I had lots of noise from adjoining/above rooms.
Loved staying in this boutique hotel. Prices for hotels are a very relative thing depending on your source and timing. We took advantage of a hotel tonight (phone app) deal 7 days prior to our stay and got a great price for this charming and modern hotel within union square on a saturday night. Best things about this place: Rooms are beautifully decorated with many sporting exposed brick. Our room was on the top floor in the corner across from the elevator… 802 I believe. On the floorplan it appears to be on the smaller end of the rooms and I thought I was HUGE. Bed was sooo comfortable. That is my requirement for satisfaction at a hotel. Bathroom was huge. Shower was huge. All very modern and chic. Complimentary bee toiletries were very nice. Complimentary breakfast! massive and satisfying breakfast… when I hear "continental breakfast" I think, muffin and OJ. This spread had assortment of fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs, sausage, sliced baguette, bagels, mini croissants, danishes, quiches, starbucks coffee, tea… and maybe im forgetting things because it was quite impressive and expansive. Conveniently located near BART stations and bus stops. Visitor's paradise. Hotel restaurant with live music. We went to check it out, seemed cool but the jazz band was trying to be a rock band and was ear piercing so we didnt stay long. The hotel will give you 20% of vouchers for food and drink, which is cool, but we never hit that up. Few complaints: 1.
Very cute hotel — one of the cutest I've ever stayed! Rooms are lovely and the staff was helpful. The complimentary breakfast was insanely good. Tons of options and all real food (no boxed eggs)! Was a great value for how nice the stay was. Would stay again in a heartbeat.
Good, clean, nice room, comfortable, breakfast is amazing, only complaint is that the bathroom light is on a timer so if you're showering or pooping you will be left in the dark.
Rooms were not well insulated to noise. I could hear the staff outside at 6am. The internet did not work as it dropped connection every 5 to 10 mins. Very nice atmosphere otherwise and the hotel had a free breakfast every morning. I would stay again if they could fix those issues.
Crazy and lovable Hotel.
Nice staff. Seem more concerned with the way things look than the functionality though. Hardly any surface area to place items on which is a pain when you're staying here for multiple days on end. Internet is kind of a joke. Don't expect to watch anything (even youtube clips) while staying here. Elevator is kind of scary but I guess if you're not on the 8th floor it's not too bad. Windows seem thin, lots of noise from the street. No A/C but I stayed in the winter so not totally relevant to me. Shower never got hot, just fluctuated between warm and kind-of-warm water temp. Since the hotel is owned by a chef I thought the food would be amazing. Breakfast was always good and sometimes really good. Never great. Dinner was super expensive (even for SF) and did not strike me as anything special. I've had better from food trucks =/
One of the best places to stay on San Francisco. The hotel itself is cozy, with nice rooms, comfortable beds, amazing and helpful service. The food is excellent. The surroundings of the hotel are safe and enjoyable. I've walked all time while there, on March 2014. Not expensive at all.
Great Hotel. Amazing room and loved the complimentary breakfast.
This is the 4th time I came to San Fransisco for a work related conference and this hotel has been the best out of the ones I have been to. My room was on the 8th floor and for the most part was pleasant. The complementary breakfast is OK, nothing special there.
This hotel seduced me by its façade and its charm with a hushed atmosphere worthy of 50s style. The room was small but quiet and clean although I found some traces of dust.
Put aside that nothing to say. Breakfast buffet with all possible versions (sugar and dirty).
For my part I had a room on the 3rd above the bar, and I have not heard any noise.
Really enjoyed our stay here! Very charming and cozy rooms and fantastic breakfast!
This place was excellent! Just the right everything for my one night stay. Bonus points for the chocolate chip cookies in the lobby and helping me arrange the best way out for an early departure. Tip: save your money and just order more cookies if you're at the restaurant. The "cheesecake" is all cheese, no cake.
I liked the hotel in spite of the old and slow elevator. Remained me of Paris. Clean and comfortable with a good breakfast, great restaurant and bar. The staff were really helpful. The location is great. Close to shopping, restaurants. Powell St Bart station, China Town, you name it. Check out the lounge that is also available for private events.
I liked the well kept old hotel along with the old and slow elevator. Everything was clean and well maintained. However, I'm a business traveler and the Wi-Fi was unacceptable. Sitting on the only seat in the room by the window was out of range, forcing me to work from the bed. Download speed is comparable to dial-up. There's no excuse for this being so bad in San Francisco.
Cute hotel in an old building with cool interiors and large rooms. Also in a good location. Downfalls were no air conditioning in the room and paid parking was across the street but was at least cheap.
Was charged for mini bar usage I never touched. The manager avoided to discuss it. Had to dispute it with credit card issuer. The managers consider no one will fight for several bucks. Cheap business.
This hotel was really a great location. Complimentary bites for breakfast and the room was clean daily. I stayed for 5 nights. I was going to give this hotel a 5 star until I realize those rashes on my lower back and my side were bedbug bites. ROOM 707. I don't know if I'll go back now. Bummer.
This is my first time staying here. I used to stay at Hotel Abri, however Mystic Hotel will be my new goto hotel when staying in Union Square. The staff here is way more welcoming, the rooms smell much better, and this bed is so incredibly comfortable! I would give 6 stars if I could.
Great location for business travelers that will be in Union Square, or for tourists that want easy access to shopping. Quick walk to China Town, not a terrible walk to Fisherman's Wharf, and close to transportation to get you to the Mission District, Golden Gate Bridge, and other fun stuff. Room was small, but cute. It's probably best for single travelers or young couples that really just intend to use the room for sleeping. Very helpful staff, good breakfast. I'd stay here again.
Incompetence of the Frontdesk. Buy two rooms for 4 guests We are assigned a a little more spacious with a bed and a sofa uncomfortable… After several complaints we climb the price and offer us breakfast… The night loud, you do not sleep! The only advantage is in the center!
The rooms are very good Beautiful bathrooms. Free breakfast and Wi-Fi! Recommended.

Super cute room! Awesome friendly concierge (s). Convenient, literally a walk around the corner garage — valet parking at fair (for the city) prices. Close to shopping district, great bars, and foods! Planning to stay again for sure!
