Review of Fundu Lagoon 4*

Our family had a fantastic time at Fundu Lagoon and the place was truly stunning. Our rooms had their own mini-pool, a complimentary mini bar, and private access to the sandy beach with our own sunloungers. The food was good, with their fresh pastries served at breakfast and dinner being the highlight but the fresh fish options at dinner were also quite good. Otherwise, the food was fairly average for a hotel and not particularly above our expectations or of the same standard of the other hotels we had stayed at on our trip. As the water on the beach is relatively shallow, it gets to temperature's upwards of 27 degrees Celsius making it perfect for a morning swim or to hide from the sun during the day without sacrificing the comfort of the heat. Snorkelling and diving is also available at an extra cost. We tried the snorkelling but our experience was somewhat marred by a windy day which not only created big waves but also made for quite bad visibility. However kayaking and paddle boards are provided by the hotel, so you can just use these whenever you like at no additional cost. What's keeping this from a five star, however, are a few minor issues that prevented our trip from being outstanding. Firstly, our daughter's allergies were poorly catered for as despite them having knowledge of them and acknowledging them at the start of the trip, we were never told if there was anything on the fixed menu that she was allergic too and alternatives were never provided. Furthermore, even when we asked we were sometimes told that it didn't contain nuts or eggs, only for her to have an allergic reaction several minutes later. Following on from this, some of the staff's English wasn't always good enough to be able to communicate with us and we were misunderstood a few times; they also would sometimes make you feel slightly uncomfortable and rushed when choosing your food by waiting there and asking every 30 seconds if you'd chosen yet. Another minor gripe is the amount of smokers there were at the hotel and that they were allowed to smoke almost everywhere (in the dinner room, the bar, the swimming pool, even the speedboats when we went snorkelling/diving). Although it might make it a better experience for them, it slightly lessened ours. Finally, at the start we were told we would have dinner in different locations every night, starting in the traditional dinner room and after perhaps at the swimming pool or on the beautiful jetty but this didn't happen.
