The owner is a horrible person. But see it for yourself. I was a volunteer at Mellow, along with many others, and my only condition prior to come work was to get a private bedroom. He agreed.
The job entailed helping with branding.
Everyday I sat with the owner to report on the progesss of my work for 2 hours at least. Plus the 2-4 hours I worked there everyday.
He never gave me private accommodation. I had to sleep in a dorm with the guests, sometimes on a mattress on the floor. Eventually I got “upgraded” to the private bedroom and I had to share a queen size bed with another volunteer in the house of the owner.
Some days he would sleep in the bedroom with us, but most days he would walk in and start talking to us about work while we were in bed — without knocking — and continue to speak to us even if I was in my underwear or what not.
Next to this he would text me everyday to ask me where I am if he didn’t see me around, asked me who I hanged out with and what I spoke about.
At the end of my stay I had developed the branding brief for the hostel, the social media strategy and designed and styled the current lounge/main area that looked like a dumpster when I first arrived.
His disregard for the working conditions of the volunteer program, his treatment to us, his lack of fulfilment on promises and his general attitude drove me to a panic attack. And while I was having it, in front of him at the hostel, the only thing he said was: “ can you stop overreacting? “ and “if you want to be dramatic, go somewhere where the guests don’t see you “
Before leaving the job I tried conversing with him to voice my reasons for terminating the program and the general unhappiness of the volunteer staff. And his response was “are you done? ” And “I don’t care about you or any of them, you can all go”. Do NOT volunteer here and save yourself from staying in this greedy run place.
