Scenic Matavai Resort Niue

The Scenic Matavai was a beautiful place to stay for my week in Niue. Idyllic views of the ocean (particularly at sunset! ) and of the pod of spinner dolphins hanging out for most of the week in front of the resort. The service was exceptional and it was so lovely to stay somewhere where staff get to know you, remember your room and ask about your day. Great advice too whenever needed for the island. The rooms were beautifully appointed, clean and all had amazing ocean views. The cocktails were delicious and the food at the restaurant was amazing! My favourite was the grilled fish and chips which was grilled yellow fin tuna freshly caught. Such a wonderful experience — I will be back!

Just wrapped up an incredible stay at Scenic Matavai Resort in Niue.
The new menus are a standout. Fresh, vibrant, and packed with flavour — you can tell a lot of thought has gone into elevating the dining experience.
What truly makes this place special though is the people. Huge shoutout to Sala, Posa, Belinda, Tamasi, Toli and Lemani — such genuine, warm service that makes you feel completely at home. Special mention to James (an outstanding GM) who lead an incredible team that clearly take pride in what they do. It shows in every interaction.
The pool bar is next level — Shadow makes what are easily the best cocktails on the island 🍹. Perfect spot to relax, take in the views, and soak up the atmosphere.
A really unique addition is the newly created food forest — such a great initiative. Highly recommend making time to chat with Flo, whose passion and vision for it really brings the whole concept to life.
The atmosphere is something else — relaxed, welcoming, and perfectly in tune with the island vibe. Waking up to those ocean views, sunsets that don’t look real, and the peaceful surroundings makes it very hard to leave.
Overall — amazing service, amazing atmosphere, and an amazing stay.

My stay at Scenic Matavai Resort Niue was absolutely fantastic once again—this is my third visit, and I’ll definitely be coming back!
There are plenty of activities to enjoy around the resort, so you’ll never feel bored. Whether it’s relaxing by the pool or exploring the beautiful surroundings, there’s always something to do.
The hotel staff are truly outstanding—friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help. A special mention to the chefs, who went above and beyond for me. As a vegetarian who doesn’t eat eggs, fish, or seafood, I really appreciated how accommodating they were. They were happy to customise meals, and I ended up having the best vegetarian burger of my life, with a fresh patty made specially by the chef—absolutely incredible!
The pool area is great for relaxing, and the selection of wine, alcohol, and cocktails is excellent—perfect for unwinding after a day out.
Another big plus is the improved internet connectivity. The Wi-Fi is now much better, thanks to the IT team who were onsite upgrading the network—definitely noticeable and much appreciated.
Overall, a wonderful experience with great food, amazing service, and a relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommended!

A lovely resort hotel with very friendly staff, clean, good sized rooms and a superb view down and up the coast. The restaurant deck is superb where you sit inside or out and listed to the waves crashing on the shore. And the food was very good.
Although there's no beach at the resort, a short 5 mins walk brings you a coastal access point with a tiny beach or a 5 min trip by car or 20 min walk will bring you too a larger beach. But note these are coral beaches. The hotel however has two pleasant pools, and if you rent a car you can visit a number of other locations noted for snorkelling.
With a very small population and only one weekly fight in the early months of the year, Niue is a great destination if you just want a very relaxing time in a superb location at a well run, low key resort hotel.

Wow, we had the most amazing time, couldn't complain about anything, the staff were great, really attentive and so polite and helpful. Room was great, everything we needed, the bed was so comfortable and they were well maintained. Food delicious and plentiful, (good sized portions) Location great, and the cave under the hotel area was so beautiful to visit, sit and swim in, watching the fish and sea snakes.
Can't fault Niue, really did need a car to access all the beautiful spots, we went out of season but so perfect, quite and relaxed.

The easiest five-star rating I have ever left. While the rooms aren’t the most plush, everything else is beyond expectation. While one often reads about how nice the people are at this or that hotel, the Scenic Matavai is the poster child. Starting with James, the general manager, and filtering through the entire organisation — including Shadow, Sala, Papu and others — the staff are wonderful: they were genuinely friendly and committed to ensuring we enjoyed our stay to the utmost. The restaurant serves excellent food at prices that are reasonable. The resort has been designed to take full advantage of the amazing ocean views. There was no better place than our cliff-top room to watch the sun set. We’ll be back.

Really enjoyed our time at Matavai. A beautiful room (Deluxe Clifftop) with amazing views (especially sunset) from the balcony, also amazing views from the main deck, nice pools but a bit small, excellent swim-up bar, foods and drinks were great, very friendly and helpful staff.
Thanks to James (the manager) who went out of his way to make sure everything go well, Sala, Shadow, Papu, Jack and the rest of the team.

I didnt stay there but went there for happy hour. Location was nice and Thomas made me a great cocktail but the place was dead and I was the only person there. The pool bar was also closed. So I left for the local bars which were much busier.

We highly recommend Scenic Matavai Resort. The location cannot be beaten with incredible views. The resort facilities are great particularly the pools and pool bar. We stayed in a superior room with a clifftop view, can't be beaten. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

There are limited options in Niue, and this is ideal if you want to stay somewhere with more facilities. The rooms are well equipped (fridge, tea/coffee) and can ask for iron/ironing board. Views from the resort are lovely. The continental breakfast included is quite extensive, although more local fruit would have been nice. The housekeeping services were a bit hit and miss, and the room could do with a good vacuum. Especially for the big rug that cant really be kept clean. Staff all very friendly and helpful.

It's the only resort on the island but they do a great job which. Ales some resorts complacent. Welcoming and friendly. The rooms have great showers, blinds and AC, and the resort is well maintained. The kitchen always had everything on the menu — all things that often are challenging in remote locations. The staff could not be friendlier. They greet you by name and constantly make you feel welcome and at home. A special shout out to Nemani who went above and beyond during my stay and James the manager who was great.

We had wonderful vacation with our family at Scenic Matavai.
Axcomodation was comfortable, location was good, food was great and the service was excellent. Great cocktails by the pool, Shadow the barman was skilled and lots of fun. The Restaurant team were excellent, Sala in particular was a very friendly face each morning, remembered all our names by day two and made us very very welcome.

We had such a fantastic trip to Matavai Scenic Resort and will be talking about our time here for many years to come — Niue was an unforgettable experience and truly an unspoiled paradise. Our heartfelt thanks go to all the incredible staff who made our stay so special.
Accommodation.
We stayed in a Superior Clifftop Room, which was comfortable and well-situated near the resort facilities, with comfy beds, air conditioning and ceiling fans. The views were absolutely stunning, and the balcony was a real highlight — perfect for soaking in the scenery and watching the resident chickens and cats wander past to say hello.
Food.
While the menu isn’t extensive, it focuses on fresh, seasonal local produce, which we really appreciated. Breakfast was excellent, especially the fruit platters. Dinner highlights included the Polynesian curry, steak, and the Uga crab night, which was a standout experience. The pizzas were also very good, and leftovers made for an easy lunch the next day.
The Christmas Day buffet was fabulous — a huge thank you to everyone who organised and hosted such a memorable celebration.
Resort & Service.
The resort has two lovely swimming pools, fresh towels available on demand, laundry facilities, and consistently friendly and attentive service.
Special mention to Sala and the team for excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner service, and to Shadow for fantastic bar service.

We had a great time in Niue at Matavai resort, great facilities with two swimming pools and lookout balcony to watch dolphins putting on shows for us. Our room was nice and clean (& a coffee machine is a bonus! ) with a sizeable deck. We enjoyed watching the sunset from our room. Coconut show and Coconut crabs at the resort were great. On the New Year day, the resort put on a pool party with a DJ, a very long happy hours and delicious food! Big thank you to Shadow, Sala, Jay, Babu and James who looked after us for the entire week. 🫶🏼

I love Matavai! Great customer service where everything was so easy to have bookings done, the room was clean and perfect enough for my stay, the restaurant served excellent food, breakfast buffet was also a bonus. Pool bar area was also a luxury place to sit and enjoy the views of the ocean, highly recommend this lovely resort, I will be booking again in future!

Stunning location, lovely pool, lovely staff, excellent fresh local food everyday. Niue is amazing and this resort is an easy place to relax and enjoy the island. The General Manager and staff were delightful hosts, bending over backwards to ensure a peaceful, friendly stay.
Highly recommend this resort just for the location alone which is very James Bond.

We came for our son's wedding. Our first 5 days were 5 of 5 stars. Then our flight was cancelled. We had to return and stay 3 more nights.
We were told we had to wait for 4 hours to get back into our room. Only to discover nothing had been done in our room. We got the same room with the same sheets from the last week, full trash cans and no fresh towels. The room was untouched!
Our nephew 2 doors from us paid the same rate. Our rates went up from the local rate $129 to $490 USD a night! The staff insisted that the airline would reimburse us, but we have yet to see anything from the airline. (It took our niece 3 years for her Air New Zealand reimbursements. )
We asked to speak to the manager. We got different excuses such as "Lisa off island" or "The owner sets the policy, he is in New Zealand". No amount of pleading got us anywhere.
Then there was the price of breakfast. The advertisement clearly states that breakfast is included. Yet, we were told the local rate does not cover breakfast. So when the room rate was jacked up to an insane amount … breakfast was still not included.
We paid cash for our final dinner. At check out time we were told we owed $33 for our dinner. Fortunately, we had the receipt as proof of payment!
I will never stay here again! NEVER! Buyer beware!
