Good spot for solo travelers! The room is clean and cozy, perfect for one person.
Reception is friendly, and there are useful extras like water dispensers, a microwave, and a fridge. Shared showers are decent.
Gotta take note that the rooms/doors aren’t very soundproof — I can hear people walking past my room or talking outside. There’s a bar right next door, so light sleepers might have a rough night. It wasn’t a problem for me though.
Solid stay overall.

The room itself is very nice — spacious and clean. I felt secure within my room/the hotel and the staff are very friendly!
The bathroom/toilets need to be cleaned more, however are usable!
The pub next door blasts really loud music until 3am (despite it being empty) and the bass carries through a lot. Some reviews state that they don’t hear it/it’s not too bad, however it was too loud for me to sleep. Perhaps it’s the location of the room? They provide earplugs at reception however they were not effective at blocking the sound.

I stayed at Sleep Box from 5–7 January 2026 and booked a Deluxe Double Room through the Sleep Box website. I was assigned Room 304, located at the corner with a long window.
At first, the room felt very small, but thankfully all the basic needs were well provided. The bed was extremely comfortable (I had a really good rest! ). The room also came with clothes hangers, rubber slippers for the bathroom, a mirror, a glass and water container (water can be refilled from the dispenser outside the room), a hair dryer (very helpful for a girl like me! ), power sockets next to the bed so I could charge my phone while sleeping, and a good AC.
The shared bathroom was clean and well maintained. There is a clear separation between female and male areas. For women, there are many sinks, 2 shower rooms, and 2 toilets. There are also 2 washing machines and an ironing table available. Honestly, I felt a bit nervous at first because the bathroom is shared, but since the doors close properly, I felt safe using it.
During both nights, I could slightly hear music from the bar next door. I’m a light sleeper, but it didn’t really bother me. Because the hotel is located on a main road, you can also hear traffic sounds, but the area is always lively. As a female solo traveler, I actually felt safer walking around because the street is always busy.
The location is very strategic.

I’ve stayed at this hotel many times and it never disappoints! The room is always very clean and tidy, and the atmosphere is comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Koko, who always goes the extra mile to make my stay enjoyable. Highly recommended and will definitely stay here again!

As the name suggests, the rooms are small and box-like—more about efficiency than spacious comfort—but they’re thoughtfully laid out and perfectly fine if you’re traveling light or only staying a night or two. I appreciated how clean the rooms were, and the shared toilets were kept clean and dry most of the time, which made the experience feel more comfortable than many budget options.
Where the property could really improve is soundproofing. Noise from the downstairs pub carries up quite clearly until around midnight, and the insulation between rooms isn’t the best either. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs, consider a white-noise app, and, if possible, request a room farther from the street or on a higher floor. Once the pub quiets down, sleep is fine, but early sleepers or those with early mornings should plan accordingly.
This place suits travelers who value cleanliness, efficiency, and affordability over space and amenities. It’s ideal if you’re out and about most of the day and just need a tidy, reliable place to rest. If you need lots of room to spread out or require near-silence, you might find the setup limiting.
Overall, I’d rate it 4 stars. The cleanliness and practicality stand out, and with better sound insulation, it could easily become a top-tier budget pick.

Great for solo travelers! I booked two separate days and got the same room, super convenient. Good value, walking distance to attractions and a convenience store. Heads up: there’s a loud bar nearby from 11 PM to 3 AM, so light sleepers should take note.

This hotel is one of the best I've stayed in Penang.
It's close to many restaurants and bars, making it feel lively at night. The hotel is also very comfortable, making us feel at home for a longer stay.
Although the bathroom facilities are outside, everything is clean and well-maintained. There's also a refrigerator, microwave, free water dispenser, and free laundry facilities.

We booked a last minute stay at Sleep Box and the service and stay was exceptional! We checked in very early in the morning and luckily the hotel had a 24/7 desk. The owner was very accommodating and even gave us an upgrade on our room 🩷
The room and bathroom were very clean and overall we were really impressed with all the facilities here. Each floor has a little kitchen area which is very handy too especially for refilling your drink bottle.
Although the room is small it has everything you need. The beds are really comfy and the decor is super cute! Wish we stayed here longer. ⭐️

The front desk staff is friendly, and the room is clean, tidy, and cozy.
Roadside parking is limited, but there’s a private parking area just across the street, RM3/hour.
The hotel is located next to a bar with a live band, so it's a bit noisy at night, but still ok, acceptable to me. Is depends. 😇 staff will provide earplugs as well if you need.

I recently stayed at this hostel, and experienced an incident that left me feeling an uncomfortable, a staff member knocked and then opened my door without waiting for my response and I think the staff should prioritise guest privacy.
I hope the team can look into this and remind the team to always wait for a reply before entering a guest’s room. With that addressed, it could make future stays much more reassuring.
The sound can be very loud as the bar is just beside this hostel.

I stayed at Sleep Box Penang for 3 nights and overall, it was a pretty good experience — with a few things to note if you’re planning to book.
📍 Location:
The location is super strategic. It's only a short walk to the nearest bus stop, and you can easily get to most tourist spots around George Town. It’s really convenient.
🛏️ Check-in & Deposit:
Check-in starts at 2:30 PM, and you’ll need to put down a RM50 deposit. Early check-in usually comes with an extra fee, but I got lucky the staff let me in early for free in exchange for sharing my experience. Fair deal.
🔊 Noise Level:
There’s a bar right next to the building, so it can get noisy at night. If you're a light sleeper, this could be a dealbreaker. But for me, it wasn’t an issue I can sleep through pretty much anything, and I actually slept.
Really well all 3 nights.
🛠️ Facilities:
They provide a washing machine and dryer, big plus if you're traveling for a while and need to do laundry without extra cost. There's also a shared fridge, microwave, and water dispenser in the common area.
🚿 Bathroom:
Yes, the bathrooms are shared, but they’re kept clean and maintained regularly. I never had to wait too long to use one, and the water pressure was decent too.
💸 Value for Money:
For the price you pay, I’d say it’s worth it especially with the laundry and kitchen access. It’s perfect for backpackers or budget travelers.
Would I stay here again?
If I’m back in Penang and still on a budget definitely yes.

I stayed in a cozy, minimalist single room and really loved it! The space was compact but super clean and well-organized. The bed was comfortable, and the air-conditioning worked great. There’s a small desk, TV, mini fridge, hairdryer everything you need for a short stay.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The location is convenient close to cafes, local food, and public transport.
Overall, it’s a great value for the price. Simple, clean, and peaceful. Would definitely recommend!

For solo lady traveller, highly discouraged. This is not a gender separated concept, men can enter the women bathroom ANYTIME. They do not separate genders in different levels, zero safety measurement was taken.
The room is not a hotel level clean, it’s more like a dormitory cleanliness. I don’t think they change the bed sheets / towels everyday, it still smells. The toilets and bathroom smell urinal and not ventilated, feel more like a public bathrooms that are used in the sports complex.
Price is quite similar to actual hotel nearby, overall, just go book the hotel next street. I must’ve been blind when I book here.

Pro:

— convenient location.
However, the flaw of the bathroom is too big, which is why it is 2 stars.
Con:
— the bathroom smells of sewage.
— the bathroom is extremely dirty, and has no TP (need to bring from room)
— the flush did not work this morning at 8am and there were no signage warning of it. The receptionist said it would take 1 hour to fix.
For this reason alone, I would recommend this place to only those who do not mind the conditions of the bathroom/only need one nights stay.

It's my first time in Penang and I was solo traveling too, boy, I have to say that this hostel was the smartest decision I made. From the convenience, to the cleanliness, to the accessibility and to the staff, everything about this place was so brilliant and cozy. I 100000% will recommend and will be returning to stay here ☺️

We came in at 3 AM after our bus got in 6 hours late and our original hostel was closed for the night. They accommodated us and were so nice. The staff was so sweet and the rooms were also very clean and comfy. The bathrooms were also new and clean as well. Would highly recommend to any traveller.
