Moon Tree 47 has a unique charm, but it’s not for everyone. The café, housed in an old heritage shophouse, has a rustic and vintage feel that gives it character. The mismatched furniture and antique décor create a cozy atmosphere, making it a decent spot to sit and enjoy a drink.
That said, the place could use some upkeep. It leans more toward “old and worn” rather than “charming and nostalgic, ” with noticeable dust and clutter in some areas. While this might add to the appeal for those who love a raw, untouched vibe, others might find it a bit unkempt.
The food and drinks are decent but nothing particularly outstanding. The menu is fairly simple, and while the coffee is enjoyable, it doesn’t stand out compared to other cafés in Penang. Service is friendly but can be slow, especially when the place gets busy.
Overall, Moon Tree 47 has its appeal if you like vintage, slightly chaotic spaces, but if cleanliness and well-maintained surroundings matter to you, it might not be the best choice. A solid 3.5-star experience—nice for a one-time visit, but not necessarily a place you’d keep coming back to.

The photos do not reflect the current state of the hotel. We did not have a good time there. The showers are dirty, it smells mouldy and like insect spray, the hotel is noisy, the cat meowed loudly all night. The owner is unfriendly and did not accommodate us. We cancelled our stay early.
I wouldn't wish such a terrible stay on anyone.
The price-performance ratio is not right. Please look for another hotel.

MoonTree 47 is definitely a unique experience with some real charm. The rooms were not terribly comfortable however: concrete floors, "king bed" = 2 twin mattresses on a concrete floor pushed together with a king sheet pulled over it, "AC" = minisplit that was ancient, moldy, and ultimately only gave off a very light, relatively warm current, the second story needed to be climbed to via an incredibly steep ladder. Definitely overpriced. I would strongly encourage a little shopping around before booking here.

Excellent central location in a charming historic building, with gardens. Great for experiencing the old Penang feel. Not a concrete modern hotel and thats just fine because if you want to have the old orient travel feel this is it.

One of the best guesthouses we've ever been to.
Located close to Chulia street market means youre close to all the streetfood you might desire.
The guesthouse itself is one of the heritage houses, so the place has an authentic old patina.
In adition to that it is richly adorned with tropical plants — the result being a beautiful lush experience.
There is a cafe in the ground level that operates in the morning hours until mid afternoon which means you can always have a breakfast or a drink just there.
The host is excelent, helpful with tips for exploring Georgetown. I will miss our coversations :)

We loved this guest house, and Kent, the owner, is such a cool guy with so many tips to explore the city.
So green, so cozy, and the location is great and close to lots of attractions.

We spent a week here, taking our time to enjoy Georgetown at a leasury pace. This place was perfect for that. The street is very quiet, the shower on the roof is charming, internet is good and the room upstairs was big and comfy.
Kent is very friendly and gave us nice recommendations for good places to eat and general infos about Malaysia.
5/5, would come again!

I stayed here 5 nights and can definitely recommend it. Great location, close to restaurants and bars, but on a quieter street. Kent was wonderful, providing lots of advice and information when I asked. It's a bit rustic, but good value for money. And the cafe downstairs is a lovely spot to do some work from.

Authentic and pleasant.
This historic building is an oasis in the middle of this city, with its small inner courtyard full of plants.
The owner is very nice, helpful and respectful.
The café is decorated with taste, with many antique objects.
The rooms have a real charm, high ceilings and very airy. This is a real bonus if, like me, you prefer a fan to air conditioning (although it's also available).
It is clean and comfortable.
The sound insulation between the rooms is not really great, as some other comments says, but it is a detail that would not make me remove a star.
I've been to other hotels in Penang, and most are very noisy, mostly because of the traffic of the roads, while Muntri Street is pretty quiet.
I had a very pleasant time there.
