Great ryokan in quiet location but a short walk from Kyoto's main attractions temples. On foot you reach the station in just 6/7 minutes and numerous supermarket bar restaurants. To try Japanese room with tatami and romantic private garden. Standard Japanese measures for which small for Italians but rooms are more airy than average.

Best ryokan in japan Awesome staff with perfect english for everyone, they even gave tips to speak in japanese (which is rare) Rooms were super clean at any time, super convenient place with public transportation very close!

Staff were disorganised during check-in. We had to repeat the same thing numerous times as a a few staff were involved in the checking process, when only one was required. They were in a rush to usher us to our rooms, and did not even hear us telling them that our luggages are still in the car. We had to raise our voices over the group of staff, to be heard. In the room, staff giving the instructions were very rude. We had requested for assistance to setup the tatami beds, which they rejected and requested that we do it on our own.

We were swamped by 5 staff at one go during check in, asking the same questions over and over again. There was a rude one that raised her voice to make us move our car when we paid for the parking for 2 days. When we rushed out to move the car, we saw that there’s no urgency. They were rushing us all over the place, we expected more coordination and standard check in practices. In the room, the staff guiding us was quite elaborate to the extend to insist to show us how to use a normal air conditioner remote control, which is a bit insulting. Toiletries are only available beside the reception desk. Overall bad experience although their staff speaks relatively good English.

The staff was very friendly, English is very good, there is a even speak Chinese, said to be in Yilan study yo XD stay the next day, and no special instructions, but peer partners birthday, on the same morning sent a birthday dessert plate, the evening back to our photos, very memorable. The location is also very good, the room is clean and beautiful, although need to make the bed, but really need also can ask them to help ~ lived the second time, recommended everyone to go ~

Great location, 15 minute walk to Kyoto station. Clean rooms, amenities are lacking, as is bathroom quality. Great for the money.

We really enjoyed our stay. The hosts are kind and accommodating. Location is nice — in heart if Kyoto. Sadly this place does not have it's own onsen (and the public ones are a long walk). Also the service does not include any room served meals or having your bed prepared for you — perfectly reasonable given the quite reasonable rates (however a bit of a let down relative to a full service Ryokan which is a really cool experience). In any case this place is definitely worth the great rate, we would definitely return.

Hidden away in the little streets of Kyoto but within walking distance of Kyoto station, the Imperial Palace and many other Shrines and places to visit. The place was quiet, immaculate and staff including were warm and accommodating eagerly wishing to be of service to us. Breakfast was great, choice of western style or traditional Japanese. If you're keen on Ryokan style, I truly recommend this little treasure. Always pleasing to return to after a busy day. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay memorable. Location quite good, 15 minutes walk to Kyoto station and similarly close to busses also. Rooms are traditionally sized and quite comfortable to stay in. Breakfast options are varied and tasty. The front desk is manned from quite early to very late and they do offer cheap drinks also. Service exceeds expectations in terms of English language and customer interaction and recommendations. All around very happy to stay at, just watch your head on some of the low support bars if your over 6'!

Very very nice Ryokan. The property is easily reachable from Kyoto station also on foot (about 10 minutes), the staff is extremely polite, competent and speaks excellent English, the building both outside and inside looks very new, the hall with the inner garden of Front of the reception is great. The Japanese Style Tea Room with garden in which I stayed with my partner was perfect, new, big enough (I remind everyone that Japanese standards are different from European ones) and especially spotless, as well as the bathroom, which by standards Japanese is of normal size but for us Europeans it might look small. The beds, or rather the futons (traditional Japanese beds), were unexpectedly comfy! I was a little skeptical about it since I have problems with my back but then I refused because when I got up in the morning I was even better than when I sleep in the normal bed. Returning to the hotel, booking a minimum stay of 4 nights through the official site are offered various discounts and gifts. For example we chose the one-day City bus Pass, which allows you to use the Tokyo city bus line free of charge for a full day, and the tea ceremony, the classic Japanese tea ceremony (to try! ). The prices are in line with the competition. In conclusion I can say that I can recommend this beautiful Ryokan to anyone who is in Kyoto, especially couples!

Perfect location to visit Kyoto (2 steps from Central Station). Welcome and staff to the small care. A convenient ryokan to rest after a day of mop-up.

When we first arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Our room (western style) was clean, visually appealing and cosy. The beds were large and comfortable and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We felt like they cared about us on a personal level. The location is close to both Kyoto Station and the more traditional areas of Kyoto. We will certainly return if we come back to Kyoto.

After a short walk from the train station we arrived at the fantastic Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Honganji. I really wanted to book into a ryokan (Japanese style hotel) at least once on the trip as a) it’s one of the first words you learn and b) the experience was supposed to be quite different from a standard western style hotel, even a Japanese western style hotel. And it is. And it’s better. We were met by the wonderful Szymon who gave us some tea while he checked us in then explained a few of the differences between their ryokan and a hotel. A lot of those are to do with the tatami mat room and the arrangements for sleeping on futons. Basically change into slippers, don’t drag your case onto the tatami, and if you spill anything get help quick. When you want to go to bed, get the futons out of the cupboard and make your bed. They like to treat you as if you were a member of the family and it really shows. We felt properly Japanese, especially after putting on the yukata (lightweight kimono) and sliding the shoji doors shut. Obviously there are concessions to modern life like a TV and aircon (essential! ) but images from Shōgun of Blackthorne waking up for the first time in a Japanese room kept running around my head. We’d been in Japan a week but this felt like we were in JAPAN. That might come across as cliché or corny but it’s true nonetheless. The following morning we had the Japanese breakfast that we’d booked the night before with Szymon.

A beautiful traditional ryokan. The staff were helpful and friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and they offer day passes for the local buses, which are all easily accessible. At the time of our stay they were also offering guided tours of the nearby temple. Our bathroom had a nice, deep bathtub that felt great to soak in after a long day of exploring Kyoto's many temples and shrines. Of all the places we stayed at during our trip, I miss this one the most!

Very accommodating staff. We chose a traditional modern room which about twice the size of our Tokyo hotel room. It's very nice with just the right balance of traditional and modern for me. Also, the traditional Japanese breakfast was quite good. They also have a western breakfast options as well.

Located 15 minutes away from Kyoto Station. 2 minutes away from a convenient store. Service, staff and the rooms were great. Would recommend and stay again.

This place has everything you could ever want in an ideal location within Kyoto, being close to a temple complex and several bus stops. The staff are some of the friendliest I've ever met and will do anything to help you. The rooms are clean, modern and traditional and although you do need to put your own futon beds up this isn't an issue as it takes next to no time. They hold several activities throughout the week including tea samples and others, there is a smoking area, a choice of breakfasts including a western breakfast, a microwave, a selection of books and their local guide books are fantastic. The staff are knowledgeable about local amenities too and most speak a good level of English. If you require it there's also a laundry room. We had a small issue with our room (102) in that it smelled of radishes being cooked on a daily basis but the air purifier provided on the wall soon took care of that. It did, however, have a wonderful little garden with big double doors that opened up fully which was a nice touch. Internet access is available in the lobby and the signal stretches to most ground floors, not sure about others. If we were to stay in Kyoto again we would definitely come back.

Stayed in the ryokan for 3 nights. Great location, friendly knowledgable staff, room was a perfect blend of modern/traditional. Very satisfied.

This ryokan was amazing! They are so welcoming and many English speakers work here if you need help with anything. They have little classes in the morning sometimes and we did the origami group and it was a lot of fun! Laying out our beds on tatami mats felt very traditional and it was a great experience.

Very nice Ryokan. Wonderful rooms with decent sizes. Great budget style Ryokan. Most I had found when searching required extra fees for food and events while this does not. (Which may be seen as a downside as it is not offered otherwise. ) Staff are friendly and speak english, and there is no curfew. The only downside is the walls are quite thin. So if you have noisey neighbors you can hear them. The inn kindly asks for people to be quiet at 11pm, and it is decently respected from my time here. Close to busses and tourism. Would stay here again!

We stayed 4 nights at the Sakura Honganji. Hotel very clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. The location is very quiet and fairly well connected by public transport.

Stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of May 2016. Arrived well before our check in time and left our luggage at the venue. The staff were more than accomodating. They spoke English. Price was very reasonable and room was as described. Got the breakfest options for an additional 800 yen each. Prepared by the lovely staff the meals were like what you can find at any 7/11 except fresh and delicious. Rooms were nice, had our own little zen garden, bathroom, Wi-Fi and yukutas. About a 10min walk from Kyoto station (JR). Easy to find. Nice venue.

Very friendly, room large enough for what is Kyoto. Very well communicated and near a temple.

Everyone is very nice, the room we rented is very traditional. The ryokan is clean and they have a later curfew than other ryokan. If you cannot make back to ryokan by curfew time, there is also a side door available with code which makes it very convenient. They also have daily events going on which adds a special touch to the place. I would recommend this ryokan to everyone.

Traditional Japanese style. Really nice rooms and fantastic friendly staff. We are a family who have lived in two separate rooms under our staying. The distance between the main station and the hotel is only 15 minutes walk.

It is an inn very comfortable. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, as you can easily walk from the central station, or you can walk a couple of blocks away you can take the bus. Near there is also a convenience store Lawsons, where you can buy something to eat or drink.

Excellent place, rooms are small but very clean and sufficient. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful with very good English. Location is great, I would definitely start here again.

Superb corner of paradise, minutes from the station of Kyoto and temples, all is easy accessible.

Good ryokan, but I find that it is quite expensive. Has to be the same thing for less in Kyoto.

It is a wonderful, comfortable and nice hotel, traditional-style rooms, many places of interest very nearby, just to walk 10 or 15mn arrive at the central station of Kyoto.
