Without exaggeration, Haiya is the best ryokan/hotel that I’ve ever stayed in. Period. The price you are paying for service and food of the highest caliber is more than fair. Take the room with the private onsen if you really want to have the whole treatment. Awara is now a must-stop for any traveler who would otherwise pass through this region.
I stayed here with a friend in July 2024. We stayed in a Japanese style room for one night. I had never stayed in a traditional Japanese inn before and wanted to experience it on my trip to the country. A shuttle bus picked us up from the JR station and we were greeted by many of the staff. Everyone was very friendly and sweet. Both me and my friend speak almost no Japanese, but there was an English-speaking staff member who kindly attended to us and explained everything. In addition, everyone else was extremely friendly and kind. The meals (dinner and breakfast) included traditional Japanese food. We enjoyed it thoroughly and found it to be very good value for the price. The room was comfortable and clean as well as very quiet. The air conditioning worked quite well so even though this summer is very hot, we were comfortable. After we checked out, they watched our baggage for us and arranged for a shuttle to JR station later on in the day even though we were checked out. I would recommend Haiya to anyone visiting Fukui Prefecture.

This was my first ever onsen visit. If I was to ever feel like Japanese royalty this was the place that made it happen. Perfect manners, atmosphere and food, even the head hostess spoke English and thanked us for coming. Thank you for a lovely visit.
