We did not stay at the ryokan for accommodation but we had lunch here on a day trip to Matsumae from Hakodate. Service was friendly and there was a basic English language menu available. The star lunch dish was a nabe set, which was delicious as well as being attractively presented. We can certainly recommend the Yano izakaya even if you are not staying in-house.
At ¥600, the onsen is a little expensive, but you can use the hotel's free Wi-Fi.

Great place to stay at a quaint little. Town. Rooms are big with attached toilet but no bath or shower as usual — use the onsen for bathing. Dinner is good but not great. Its also right next to the Matsumae Castle.
