Suite was dirty and dated. Ended up changing rooms. While it was cleaner and slightly more updated, you can stay at nicer downtown hotels for less. Staff never inquired at check out on our stay or how it could be made better for next time.

This beautiful, elegant hotel in the heart of Halifax is always our first choice but as we’ve been dealing with a health crisis, the Lord Nelson has been a home away from home. A couple lovely late night dinners. Kind employees. A lovely bagged breakfast to take to the hospital each morning. Can’t express how much we appreciate it.

TERRIBLE service. Staff will go through your bags and fabricate stories based on belongs to extort more money out of guests. Wouldn’t recommend unless you like roaches.

We came from PEI and had to be close to the hospital so we picked here and we sure were not disappointed what an amazing hotel and such clean and quiet rooms and the staff went above and beyond for us.

The rooms were small for the price, the windows leaked so much cold air and the room didn’t have everything is suggested on the website. I had a nicer and bigger room at the Atlantica that was cheaper.

This is our 3rd visit & won’t stay anywhere else in Halifax great staff.

We had a beautiful suite, large rooms, very clean. Loved the fireplace. Lot of extras in the room! The bed was so comfortable! The restaurant THE ARMS in the Lord Nelson was amazing, very good food and great atmosphere.

My stay was unexpected. I went into their hotel needing a two night stay until my flight back home. I had yet received my belongings so I literally only had what I was wearing.
I can not express how kind every employee was. They went above and beyond their duties to ensure I was comfortable until my flight, made sure I had whatever I needed until I could get my belongings and overall just amazing humans.
Their breakfast buffet was delicious, my room was very clean and the hotel itself was cozy.

Wheelchair access is the best, especially for a historic building. Staff are always so helpful and nice, they remember us even when we only come once a year! Harris is the best!
The food is always dependably satisfying. We have most meals at the Victory Arms when we are there and it is always good.
Easy to leave the car there and catch the bus to shop anywhere.
We have had the same rooms several times because we need the accessible room. Comfy beds, nice pillows, and we LOVE the big wheelchair accessible bathroom with the nice shower. Easy to get in and out, towels, mirror and switches are reachable. Many modern hotels are not as well planned.

Stayed here this week due to medical reasons. We were booked into a lovely room with a view of the Public Gardens. Very thoughtful note waiting for us in our room by Belinda from booking wishing us well with husband's medical appointment. All staff from Front desk, room cleaning and the Pub smiling and respectful. Thank you Lord Nelson.

Good staff but nothing special about the hotel facilities, especially restaurants. It is hard to find parking around it and it way too expensive to park inside the hotel's underground parking. The room is super clean and hygenically taken care of. The room furniture is not bad at all, clean and pretty new. But the room has small windows and usually overlooking the internal space in the building which is little depressing. The location is good facing a major street connecting downtown Halifax together. It's far away from the highway as you need a good 20 minutes (at least) to reach the 102 outbound.

Very nice hotel. Extremely clean and well stocked rooms. Staff are very helpful. Was here through my flight being cancelled and even under the circumstances enjoyed my stay a lot. Would stay here again for sure!

Played in the Can-At regional bridge tournament here. Nice room, well lit. We did not stay in the hotel (too expensive), and the parking was also out of reach. The tournament committee had arranged for less expensive parking at a nearby hotel, but it was quite a hike from there to the Nelson for two people who can't walk distances easily. Location next to the Public Gardens was great, because we took a picnic lunch and ate amid the flowers and birds every day (again, a long walk, but at least with a rest after it).

Nice rooms. Clean hotel. Very disappointed in the hotel service. Arrived at 2:30 (30 minutes before check-in). Was told the room wasn't ready but that they would put a rush on it and it wouldn't be long. Waited for 2 hours before finally getting the key. Hotel manager ignored my email that I sent describing the experience. Elevators also had several mechanical issues. Only one elevator worked for most of our stay.

What a nice place! Very nice and courteous staff. The room was also very clean and comfortable. The hotel was close to quite a few things and a bit of a walk to the water but we enjoyed as much as the city had to offer. Would definitely recommend!

I used to stay here alot as I needed the hospital. We came back in March and loved it. The upgrades were great except for the bathroom. We had complementary early check-in as I had a doctor's appointment at 1. Also we were upgraded. Everyone was extremely nice!
I am expected to go back to the hospital next month. But when I emailed about booking, the price has gone up significantly… they're now charging for early check-in… not to mention the $28 that is charged for parking.

I was at the Lord Nelson Hotel for a special event re Victoria Day. The hotel has always been one of my favorite places to stay. Clean, comfortable, modern, with atmosphere. I like the location. It is close enough to downtown, you can walk to the beautiful waterfront. It is across the street from the Public Gardens where you can stroll, admire the flowers, trees and beautiful nature. Stay for a night or a week and you will have lovely memories. If one does not want to stay overnight, just stop to have a bite or to quench your thirst.

The rooms didn't have room service menus in them, went down to the front desk and they said "Oh, sorry we don't have enough to go around, we'll have one sent right up" — Not a problem. I sit in the room for 35 minutes… after travelling 8 hours and wondering how long it takes to bring a menu upstairs. Finally, the menu comes up. I thank the guy, close the door. Sit down, open the menu and it's "The Breakfast Menu". Go downstairs, explain again, that I would like a SUPPER room service menu sent to my room… Wait another 30 minutes. the rooms are nice, but the staff members do not care about the guests. I would NOT come here again. If I can't get a SUPPER menu from the front desk then I cannot even imagine what the cleaning staff are incapable of.

This place was incredible. The staff pay incredible attention to detail and go above and beyond the needs of guests. Was on a birthday weekend trip to Halifax and they happily upgraded our room. Zelorah checked us in. Five minutes after settling into our room, we receive a knock at our door. The concierge hands me a bottle of wine and slickest birthday card. Well played. When I visit Halifax, this is where I’ll stay.

Lovely old hotel where we attended an event. Very good servers, ok food and lovely setting. This hotel is very fancy, but also very historical, so there are some oddities. For example, the washrooms are one and a half floors above the lobby and the exit to the parkade is a maze. Also, if you're only there for an event, look for street parking. We were only there for less than 3 hours and it cost $16 to park underground, which is high, even for downtown Halifax. Decor is one of a kind though!

Went into The Arms recently for dinner. Got some wonderfully cooked steak with potatoes and had the fruitiest margarita they could make for me. Absolutely fantastic food, drinks, and service. Small place though, but I would definitely recommend if you're nearby.

This hotel is very pleasant. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are pretty, there is a Nespresso machine in the room, fridge also. I have no complaint against this hotel. This was a positive experience, in my opinion.

So not a great experience. I was planning an event and the Lord Nelson offered me a space. After getting the contract and days of planning they came back as they had double booked it and we were out of luck. The alternative suggested was not ideal and no other options offered and long delays between emails. Not a good first impression at all.

A friendly old hotel that’s been (mostly) tastefully renovated. Dog friendly (although the $60 pet fee is a tough pill to swallow when they also mention a $300 fine for any disruptive noise). Underground parking for $28/night is dear but handy in a city that is otherwise a bit of a gong show to park in. Super conveniently located and just off some lovely parks.

Beautiful old charm. Helpful staff and lovely appointments. Rooms are a bit small, but typical for boutique style hotels. Really enjoyed my stay.

My wife and I attended an event in one of the banquet rooms and stayed overnight. The banquet room looks amazing with the new renovations, and the room we stayed in was also great. The staff at the event were really nice and looked like they were enjoying themselves. I would recommend anyone local or visiting to stay at the Lord Nelson!

Great hotel. All the staff is amazing and kind. Rooms are renovated but very small. With the renovated rooms, comes a downside. They removed the carpets which is amazing and much cleaner in so many ways, but now the floors are absolutely frozen! Bring some slippers! I’ve suggested they offer those hotel slippers so that our feet are not frozen when getting out of bed or out of the shower, but haven’t heard back or seen any changes. Hotel is well situated near lots of restaurants, shopping, and bars. Their gym is small but offers enough machines for a decent workout. In general, great hotel, great staff, and great location.

Stayed. At hotel while husband was in hospital for a lengthy time, I was well looked after and at times I was baby sitted free with the hospitality of the the hotel. Breakfast was a one of a kind buffet excellent. Lovely gardens across the street from the hotel if you have never been there take time and enjoy a weekend at the hotel and really enjoy your holiday you will not be disappointed, The ladies and gentlemen at the desk were wonderful in all ways and the doorman always called me by my name which was a bonus because even if I was a lone it felt that I was with family I would throughly recommend this hotel to everyone the rooms were lovely and clean and the ladies cleaning the rooms always a smile.

We have stayed at this beautiful hotel several times and everyone working there have always been very courteous, friendly and very helpful with information… We have been very pleased with the door person, receptionists, kitchen staff and all the hardworking people who look after our room… Thank you very much.

Excellent location, wonderful staff, the best continental breakfast. Underground parking connected to a small mall. Beds are comfortable but sheets are poor. Rooms are very variable probably due to age of hotel.

Great location, some of the staff were great while others should consider a career change. They really shouldn't be dealing with the public. Times are changing rapidly and management should try to keep up!

I have stayed at the Lord Nelson before and never had a problem until this trip. I had to come to Halifax on a Saturday evening without any notice as a family member was receiving an organ transplant. The Lord Nelson is the closest hotel to the Victoria General hospital where the transplant was taking place. Upon check in I spoke with the front desk clerk about the possibility of extending my stay if need be and told her because of my situation I was unsure about how long that I would be in need of a hotel. (Families of transplant patients often stay in hostels or extended stay but because of the urgency to get to Halifax and that this happened to be a Saturday I wouldn't be able to speak to someone about family accommodations until Monday. ) She assured me that once I knew how long I would be in the city that I could come back to discuss extending my stay. She even provided me with a complimentary upgrade on my room. After the stressful day that I had had this was such a nice gesture that I decided from now on to only stay at the Lord Nelson on any subsequent trip to Halifax.
On Monday the day before I was due to check out, I went to the front desk to ask about extending my stay until the following Saturday. Again, I explained my situation to another front desk clerk stressing that I would like to stay due to the hotel's proximity to the hospital. He empathized with my situation and had booked me into the hotel until Saturday.

The initial impression was disappointing: at the check in we were offered an upgrade because we were too early for our booked room. The employee made it sound like he was giving us the best deal… charging us only extra $35 instead of $55 for bigger, better, recently updated room. We said yes since he was giving us such "a lovely room"… not so much: bathroom was the size of a closet with shower only. The closet door wouldn't open. There was one creamer in the fridge, hair on the pillow and filthy clump of hair and dirt on the floor (the stuff one finds at the bottom of a bucket after mopping the floor) We went back downstairs and declined the "upgrade". The room we booked and waited for till 3 pm checking time was same size, nicer and bigger bathroom and clean. Our upgrade, in our opinion, was a fraud. From now on, we will inspect our rooms whenever we are offered an upgrade on site, as this looks like a practice hotels use to increase revenue. Parts of the hotel look run down: elevators, window coverings… place lacks attention to detail. The beds are very comfy, linens and towels are good quality. Good location. Staff generally nice.

Our room was pretty nice, the location isn't great, the parking is very confusing, not directly attached to hotel elevators like most are and very expensive. My biggest disappointment has been the service. I stayed there about a month ago and have called about 6 times and no one can ever help me look for an item that we left in our room. They send me constantly to a voicemail and no one ever returns my call. The item is very sentimental and at least being able to have a discussion with a human would help me understand. I called the same day that we left just a few hours after check out the first time.

Fantastic location for us to stay during our visit to Halifax. It's right downtown, away from the noise, but ever so close to it. There are some very nice bars and places to dine close by, and a beautiful garden park across the street. The hotel was nice and the rooms were fairly chic and modern. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The only reason not 5 stars because our check-in was at 3 but we didn't get our room until maybe 5:30 which was a bit of a downer. Aside from that I would stay again. If your here in the summer check out Still Wells beer garden in the evening!

We had a freshly renovated room and the furnishings were quite nice, but we were surprised to find that the bathroom had no ventilation — it was super foggy after showers. The location is great, good food options near by and an easy walk to the Citadel and the harbour, and the service was excellent. The construction next door, however, means that you have to walk several blocks to get to the outside self-parking if your vehicle is tall or has a roof mounted cargo box.

We stayed there 2 nights. The room was fine but what took the edge off the stay was the attempt to charge money for an extra hour for check out and then when leaving, we overheard their attempt to charge a guest money for an early check-in. Living overseas and having traveled the world extensively for the last 30+ years, this is clearly not the norm — anywhere. However, I was assured by the lady at the front desk that she had a full 9 years in the industry and that she had seen this before. Really?! The charging for self-parking was a bit steep as well.

My husband and I checked in yesterday and our suite with king bed was close to the noise from the elevator, so my husband asked if we could be moved to another room. Without any hesitation, they upgraded us to an executive suite which was beyond our expectations. It was amazing. We have stayed here on several occasions and have never been disappointed with the friendly service. We love the convenient underground parking and enjoy dining at the Arms Restaurant. They have a great menu and the food is prepared to high standards. We always enjoy the yummy breakfast buffet too. Top notch!

Beautiful hotel — one of the best in the city. Recent renovations give the hotel rooms a very modern feel, but they do a great job to match the elegance of the rest of the property. Great service from the event staff and the reservations team — never a single issue.

Fantastic hotel! We came to Halifax as part of our honeymoon trip and were put up at the Lord Nelson by a family member as a treat. When we checked in, we asked if we had a view of the Public Gardens from our room. The room they had booked in for did not overlook the gardens so they upgraded us to an executive suite at no cost so we had a view of the gardens. Amazing customer service! We woke up feeling so refreshed thanks to the amazing mattress. Recommend staying here whole heartedly!

I stayed here during a christmas party for work. It's nice, some of the rooms are nicer than others. I got a really fantastic view of the city. I would definitely give hotel four stars without a second thought.

I had to stay close to the IWK children's hospital after I had surgery to remove my tonsils, so my mom and I stayed a night at this hotel. When we arrived I was dizzy from just coming out of surgery and not feeling well. I decided to start walking straight to our room, while my mom was at the front desk paying for the room. I had to take the elevator. While in the elevator I started seeing spots and everything felt like it was spinning. Once I got out of the elevator and nearly to the my room I collapsed in the hall. A young man who worked there rushed to my aid. He was scared something was seriously wrong. Once I came to He wanted to call an ambulance but I explained that I had fainted just before being released from the hospital and that the nurse sent me on my way despite how light headed I was. He went to go find my mom who was just coming up the hall to explain what had happened. Later on the young man gave my mother a get well card with a gift card for Dairy Queen to give to me so I could get ice cream. I felt absolutely terrible and if it hadn't been for his kindness my stay at the Lord Nelson Hotel would've been one of my worst nights away from home. This young fellows act of kindness has given me unforgettable memory. One I look back on with fondness. I highly recommended the Lord Nelson hotel because the staff are very friendly. The hotel is in great part of Halifax, you get to see the historical side of Halifax. It's easy to travel to and from.

I had a great time at the Lord Nelson. Our room wasn't ready by check-in time, but they upgraded us to a suite for that reason so it was totally fine! The room itself was really nice, with hardwood floors (very welcome in a hotel where god-knows-what gets on the carpet…). The location also made it really easy to explore downtown Halifax! The only negative thing was that our pullout couch didn't have bedding at all, so we had to call the front desk to request some.

Service is very good but the bathrooms in the rooms are too small. This being said, the hotel is well located is the price is good compared to the other options.

The atmosphere is wonderful though the beds and the couch in the room seem to be of low quality. That is the impression I got.

The hotel is wonderful, it definitely lives up to the boutique label. The room wasn't huge but suited our needs and staff is friendly. Complementary Wi-Fi is fine for light browsing, and there is wired 70mbit as well. Premium Wi-Fi (20mbit, $10/day) or a personal router is recommended. One star knocked off for inaccurate information given over the phone for how to get to the hotel from the airport. We didn't make alternate travel arrangements because we were told there was a hotel airport shuttle. There was none. We ended up over an hour on local transit buses plus a hilly 20 min walk to get there. A cab from the airport would have run $70. This was a major inconvenience on a late arrival flight.

I have an issue with their service. They told me they were going to call me to resolve it. That was a month ago and they never called. When I call them, the manager is "busy parking a large vehicle" or "left on vacation yesterday. " Handy.

They must have a person who's only job is to polish brass. It's a nice hotel.

Staff super friendly, and the amenities were good. But it doesn't take out the fact that it is super noisy! The walls are paper thing, I've been woken up at least 4 times tonight with drunk people coming in loud, the street side is also loud, and keep in mind I came in on a Thursday. :s all in all, the insulation in this historic old piece of nothing is terrible. Stay away.

It was a nice hotel, looks good. We attended for a wedding inside the hotel. When we left, the hotel charged me $50 for bottles of wine that I did not even drink. Someone made an error. I called the hotel and was told the manager would return my call, the manager never called me back. I then emailed Lord Nelson and never got a response. For $50 not worth starting a small claims file but fairly disappointed. I will not be staying at Lord Nelson in the future.

Very nice inside, staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Not much of a wow factor, booked it on Expedia since it had the best price.

My partner and myself stayed here and booked the Savour Love package for an early V-Day. To start everything off, we had to ask them to park our car. She had no idea the valet parking came with our package. She didn't really know anything came with our package. The TVs in our room was really hard to use. We called the front desk and they just said we had to push the remote buttons harder. We did that and still nothing, We went out for supper at the Waterfront Warehouse and that was the best part of our stay in town. We thought we would be getting our "Turn down service" while we were out for supper. We stayed out until late that night and when we got back, our beds weren't touched. My partner called down to ask about it and they said that our "turn down service" was the wine they had waiting for us in the room when we checked in at 2:30pm that afternoon. Then the girls laughed at my partner for calling and asking. (Worst white wine ever. Must have cost buck, if that) The walls are super thin. We could hear the TV next door all night (at least they had a TV to watch). Our shower didn't look like it was cleaned (had hairs all over the walls). In the morning we went down for breakfast. We got a plate between the 2 of us and picked up 2 cold hard boiled eggs, a strawberry each, a few cuts of melon and a yogurt. There wasn't much else to choose from (and we are not picky people at all). We sat down and a lady got us some tea. Then she came to our table asking how we wanted to pay.

While it's nice to have a doorman to open the door for you, it would be nicer to have properly functioning Wi-Fi internet service.

I have had the opportunity to stay in many hotels and a variety of locations. Some of them were excellent some of them were sketchy. I have also been lucky enough to stay in some older hotels both in and outside of Canada. Prior to staying at the Lord Nelson, my favorite hotel was the Fairmont in Banff. Now, I cannot honestly tell you that the Lord Nelson is as wonderful as the Fairmont in Banff, but it is in Halifax and not in Banff. That geographical distinction aside, the service and the attention to detail was similar. As I was waiting to get breakfast I spent 10 minutes watching them polish the brass railings on the mezzanine. Given that this is a Victorian-style hotel, there is a great deal of brass all over the place. All of it shines. I had the pleasure of staying in a small suite (a king size bed in one room, a small sitting area in the other). This more than met my needs at an affordable price. Additionally, the walls were thick enough that I did not hear my neighbours nor did I have much disturbance from the street. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were fluffy and enjoyable, and the rooms were quiet. It is located across from the gardens which are beautiful, and is within walking distance of pretty much anything you would want to see in downtown Halifax. It is definately hotel I will stay in again.

Very impressive. This is not your cookie-cutter hotel (it's way better! ) The Atmosphere: This hotel is like walking into another era. Beautiful, Victorian-style, historic decor and pristine service. I've been to upscale swanky hotels and this one tops it (and it's not even in the upscale genre! ) Love the warm hospitality and talking to the doormen is like you've known them forever. The rooms: they are standard rooms with older decor but functional. I love walking through the halls to get there (passing the old-style gold elevators it's filled with sparkling chandeliers, glass mirrors, and glass tables. Stunning! ) The Gym: very clean and functional The neighbourhood: right in the downtown core so all the city is around you. Lots to see and do. Other tips: Perfect for wedding photos with a 1900s theme.
