The most beautiful, colorful unique hostel I've been to! Amazing pancakes and staff.

Trust me this is a nice place to stay. Huge building with ample of space to move around. I stayed in a 6 bed dorm, the bed was comfy with electrical adapter and fan. The weather and air here is simply fresh and refreshing. Lovely view from the room, u can see the harbour.
The owner Dan is a remarkable guy, he is a great chap! I came in at 4am, and he opened the doors just after 5am and got us registered and checked in before 10am. So accommodating, his staffs are also a bunch of nice people. Dan and his sidekicks prepare delicious pancakes for breakfast, their kitchen is well equipped with milk tea coffee. Nothing to complain about. The entire place is clean and surrounded with plants and flowers that treats ur eyes.
The place is not overcrowded, importantly well maintained and u get a sense of serenity staying here. I'll definitely visit again next time! Keep up the great work the people who run this place u have made it a great place to stay! Wish u the best!

What can I say … I thought I was only gonna spend 2 nights at 1849 backpackers, looking forward to escape Albany after a bad farm work experience.
Here I am on the bus home, 3 weeks later! 3 weeks spent there and my heart is filled with amazing memories, I leave behind new friends who behaved like family.
Thank you for making my last 3 weeks in Albany the best I've had here in Oz. Thank you for being exceptional human beings, with great values and so much heart.
This is not a business this is a family place where you ll feel just like at home.
Movie nights, board games, cooking all together and sharing a meal, listening to someone playing the piano, watching people playing ping pong, meeting new people, learning new languages : everything here is just perfect.
The place is clean, quiet, fun and cosy.
Danny and Paula will go above and beyond to help you if you need anything, staff is wonderful.
Being an helpx for 3 weeks is seriously one of the most beautiful experience I've had in Australia so far. I m so thankful I got the chance to be part of this and to meet so many fantastic people.
If there's a place abroad I d have to call home it will definitely be 1849 backpackers.
Love you guys, and I will miss you!

I came to Albany for work. Played ping pong. Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and free pancakes. I'll be back. Not the dodgy backpackers accommodation I was expecting. 5 stars for breaking the mold.

Excellent service, very clean facilities and friendly staff. The complimentary pancakes in the morning were great. Great prices and located right in the centre of town, would stay again.

Absolutely great staff, have been very patient when I spent 1 night there with my parents who are 66 years. Lovely place to stay, great pancakes and clean and tidy ;) thanks guys.

I like this Backpackers, it's pretty quiet and clean, staffs are friendly, and they got the best pancake in the world! In every way it worth 5 stars. I deduct 1 star cause there is a green flag writing like Taiwan is an independent country in the world. And this flag is next to a Taiwanese Flag. This would just lead us to find if any Chinese flag there and the result is no. As a Chinese, I can't really feel alright when I found that "Independent declaration" flag hang on the aisle even though we do not really care that much of this political problem. We went to reception to talk about this issue friendly, suggest that to take off the green one but the girl just told us that they dont have any complain before and they are fine with that. Guess not that much Chinese been there so they don't care about it at all. But in fact it's really a bit offensive. Still recommend this Backpackers as long as you are not from China.

Friendly people to help out. Beds are good. Pancakes are cooked for you, you might ask to leave sugar and/or orange. In shower my clothes next got wet.

The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. We extended our stay even though we were just passing through, we had travelled over 4000km from QLD and it was by far the best place we had stayed, we enjoyed it better than the hotels we stayed at previously, they have a downstairs entertainment area with a dart board, table tennis, musical instruments for anyone to play with an attached kitchen where you can cook dinner on their really nice gas cooker, and all pots pans and cutlery utensils are supplied, and keep your beer cold in the fridge. Up stairs they have a lounge room with netflix and gaming and board games etc. And every morning they do free pancakes… the guy that does it is amazing! And they give you the recipe for their amazing pancakes when you check out! If I could rate higher I would!

Very cute place. Lovely staff. The free unlimited pancakes are absolutely amazing. The rooms have a bit of an odor. If you eat the pancakes, make sure you ask the cook for 'the hardest puzzle'.

4 stars based on the amenities of this hostel… washing machines, showers, chill out area etc… really above average physically in a hostel, absolutely no complaints. To retain the neutrality of this review I’ve left this bit out of the rating but a worthwhile read if you feel the urge to want a bit of a night life… personally I would like a hostel with a bit more fun that leaves us to our own devices, I felt like we were told off and spoken about between staff (which apparently is 90% of the hostel… seriously, how many are there of you guys? ) for doing things considered very normal in every hostel I’ve visited in the past. You aren’t allowed to drink or do anything expect talk outside past 10pm here and music at 6-7pm downstairs felt equivalent ripping a fart during the world war minute of silence. Considering the night life in Albany is a drought during the weekday I would’ve been pleased to have an oasis backpackers to fall back to but that is fine, the way this place is run is for a reason and for a specific audience. But I’d like to say drinking past 10 doesn’t constitute it as a “party hostel” like you state you aren’t, most young travellers want to drink and chat to new people! It’s better than sleeping or walking past all the places closed for the night.

Amazing and engaging staff, free travel tips, maps, and advices made our trip easy and enjoyable. Owner and family make scrumptious pancakes! Clean room, amazing coffee, well-equipped communal kitchen, bathroom water temperature is difficult to control (probably due to shared plumbing hence when someone else is using water elsewhere the water temp changes) but it was not enough to turn the experience negative. Lounge to chill, plenty of instruments to play and hang out at dining hall/living room, self-service laundry available, ample rooms and carpark. Will definitely be back!

Well what a great place to stay. Staff at a 1849 backpackets are so welcoming. Nothing seems a problem. The place has everything you need, great kitchen area so you may do your own cooking. Plus if you need your Clothes washed they have dryer and washing machines. If you've come off the bibbulmun track like me it's a just the place to relax. I would recommend this place to anyone great value home a way from home.

Can not rate this plae highly enough. The beds are great, the facilities are clean and well organised. The free pancakes are brilliant too.

Hello! It was indeed a very decent stay. Friendly & helpful staff, friendly fellow travellers, it just feels like home, especially having an adorable cat that made me extended my stay! You must not missed out the place! Its so wonderful, we planned to come again! Did I mentioned they give free delicious pancakes in the morning? Cheers, Dila & Bob.

I initially came for 2 nights, choosing this place for the price, the location and the included pancake breakfast. Ended up extending my stay twice, staying 5 nights in total for all this + the warm homy atmosphere, the friendly staff and the super clean and functioning great amenities, the bike you can lend from the hostel, the many lounge chill areas, the outdoor area that make you say ' I'm home! ' after a long hiking/riding day, the cats, and still the pancakes — a delicious treasure, and the best way to wake up and get ready for the day! 1849 Backpackers is not your usual backpack. It is one of the best hostels I've stayed at — and I've had my share of hostel nights around the globe over the year, but most of them don't come close is reuniting everything necessary to the best stay ever.
The owners Danny & Paula and their staff are amazing people doing everything to welcome us at their place, make our stay in Albany a great time. Only down side of the place: it makes it so hard to leave and get back on the road! Thanks again for such a great time and beautiful memories in Albany! Valerie N.
Room 9 — between 5th and 10th of April 2017

1849 backpackers is by far the best hostel I've been too! The garden is beautiful, full of flowers and so well kept! The kitchen is clean, spacious and well equipped! The indoor garden (downstairs area) is full of musical instruments, board games, puzzles, darts and a ping pong table! I've stayed in a few rooms during my 2 month stay and each have been clean and comfortable with lovely well made beds on arrival! Each morning there was free homemade pancakes served — each cooked to perfection — honestly the best pancakes I've ever tasted! Also two adorable cats — Max and Tigger! The owners — Danny and Paula and the managers Shannon and Robbie were absolutely amazing throughout my stay — they went out of there way to make me feel welcome! 1849 — thanks for making a hostel feel like home!

The best hostel ever! The staff is friendly and really nice. Always helpful whatever you need. A big kitchen, a nice big area where play various instruments or play ping pong and enjoy your stay with your friends. It's clean a well looked after! In a week there I met so many nice people, they have been like a family, and we all know how important it is feel at home when we are travelling. And don't forget the all you can eat pancakes every morning!

This place is in a great location, beautiful area and very homely. The staff are very friendly and the rooms & amenities are great too. Just one bad point, if you want to sleep, this isn't the place. Music and talking through the night followed by people talking & walking around on the wooden floor boards very early. Beds are still comfortable at least ☀️

Not a gd experience during the Winter stay. We were freezing at nite as there is "No Heating" machine provided in d room. Had read their room facilities, it was described there is, but it was not. We booked the double bed room. Hoping it can be improved in future. Bathroom is spacious but dont dare to take a shower too, you can feel the wind blow in d toilet, its freezing cool. Lastly, the only credit I can say is good, helpful staff, good kitchen facilities & great pancakes for b/fast.

1849 backpackers deserves much more than full scores！ I was robbed by theft before I checked in 1849 backpackers on last weekend, all my wallets and backpacks were stolen. I had no money to live in at that time. Manager still let me live in the room and gave me towel, phone chargersweekend and lent me cash. After owner Daniel knew what had happened to me, he helped me with everything! Much more than a person that haven't met before~ He let me live in hostel for free so I can arrange all the things after being robbed. He helped to post my story on facebook and asked if anyone can help me in this tough situation. He also helped me to call and beg car rental company if I can cancel the rental with no extra charge as all my valuable were stolen. All the other staffs also helped me clean the broken window in my car, looked for my missing laptop, comforted me… etc~ Although we were only together for few days, Daniel was like my father and the others were my family members. Thanks all of you again for helping me through this tough situation!

Great hostel. Beautiful garden and also nice inside hostel. Nice clean condition everywhere. Just one small problem old toilet and shower room. But just looks old everything is nice working and. I'm really like bath and nice free breakfast. Friendly staffs are also made me comfortable at there. I great time with friends at out side garden. I will go this hostel if I go to Albany again.

Facilities are dated compared to other backpackers I have recently visited. The kitchen and the bathroom need an upgrade. The wine bar at the corner/ basement is extremely noisy until 24:00, but luckily then stops. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Are you under 25 and are you looking for a good party? Don't miss this place, the best in town. If you are more mature but enjoy the lively atmosphere of backpackers, you may want to explore other options in Albany.
