Nice place to visit. Great spot. Gluten free food on menu but not actually gluten free as fried with other fried foods… maybe a separate frying vat would be recommended for coeliacs …?

Just visiting Hobart, had a great relaxing lunch and Cascade beers at Customs House Hotel. Friendly staff, reasonable priced food, our lumches cost $34 for two.

Great food and fantastic service. Would highly recommend the Customs House Hotel if you’re looking for somewhere to dine out.

First of all, the restaurant must warn if a food item is extremely hot from inside. The mushrooms in my breakfast were boiling hot but they didn't appear hot at all on appearance. That resulted in a burned lining of my mouth, and that means I haven't been able to eat anything solid after that breakfast, and of course no coffee. So why did I give them 4 stars? I had venison in dinner the night before and that was the best venison ever. I also had some Turkish bread and it was fantastic. Service is very good and servers are quite professional. Being one of the well known restaurants in Hobart, the place has a great vibe. Update: I visited Custom House again few days ago for brekky and lunch on my Hobart visit. The food still tasted awesome.

On Friday I and friends had lunch at this establishment. Outside were approximately 15 people. Inside there were about 20 people either who had been served or about to be served. Our main meals took too long to arrive, over 1 hour 15minutes. They were welcomed at our table, as by this time we were very hungry. The food was tasty and well proportioned. There were 3 ladies sitting between the window & adjacent to the bar area. They were there before we arrived. On paying our bill, I over heard one of the ladies complaining that their meals hadn't arrived. So, the lady in question was advised the computer was down, we are using a paper order today, we must have misplaced the order. There should be no misplacement of any orders. The staff couldn't care less. Not going back.

2014. Great location, very nice rooms, and affordable price (in Australian terms). The Hotel delivers also qua pub and qua restaurant. However, it is extremely noisy on Saturday night. You are literally sleeping on top of the bar. Overnight, all sorts of brawl burst out in the streets and there were drunk people trying to break into the place! Luckily, the door held. In the end, nothing happened and the other days we spent there went quite smoothly… In the end, I still got impressed by the food and the warm atmosphere of the rooms.

This is a little ripper. Thought it might be a pub serving the tourist trade but it’s more in tune to its local customers. Friendly bar staff, good and reasonably priced beer selection but the best by far was the $16 steak sandwich. It was a bargain and delicious. Steak was tender and cooked properly. Normally at this price I was expecting to chew on a thong — not the case. I’m going back for more.

Great breakfast, eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked on lovely Turkish style toast… Leisurely start to the day, breakfast till 10… Not the restaurant, but bar food next door (basically the same… Excellent scallops and chips for a light dinner.

Very welcoming place, discreet and mindful in approach. The environment, architecture and smoked mussels were wonderful, too.

Good heater. Watched the AFL and had a good live music acoustic guitarist.

Had dinner here, the food was of very high quality. The marinated Wallaby was one of the best meals I had eaten in a long time.

Good feed. Cheap drinks at happy 2hrs. Central location. Very close to Salamanca markets. Simple accommodation. Would stay again.

This is a great place to stay on the waterfront. Close to restaurants. Recommended.

Sitting alfresco for a cheeky red with a beautiful view of Hobart. Music piped through the undercover area with heaters for your comfort.

Nicely renovated room with a view of the water and excellent food. Breakfasts were great.

Arrived at about 4:30 pm after pre-booking weeks in advance, the receptionist made us feel like we were an inconvenience & intruders of her time. We found her inhospitable & when asked how many keys we wanted being 2 she gave us one, therefor inattentive. The young barman also made us feel like we were something the cat dragged in. So we had our few beers elsewhere.
In the morning when returning our one key, the other receptionist made us again feel like we were intruding & found cold & unfriendly.
The not so lovely ice-queen who didn’t welcome us at breakfast was a sour faced snarly young woman who we are sure should only be serving royalty.
We feel that if any of these employees smiled they would have cracked their faces.
Everywhere else where we’ve spent our tourist $ we have found people acknowledging, friendly, open, charming & hospitable & have told everyone during our travels of our not at all friendly experience at Customs House Hobart.

Room was clean and spacious. Shower hot and roomy. Unfortunately hallway and door to stairs were noisy as were the late night revellers who's shouting got through the double glazing.

Great historic room for a meal. We had lunch. Good food close to Hobart waterfront attractions.

Australian food is really salty, but miles seafood chowder seafood Good fresh! I think the fish in the soup tastes good! Asked the kitchen, the original tonight is to use gem fish soup! Is!

Very nice presentation for a cafe restraunt on the corner. It has 2 bars, an a Brilliant atmosphere. Outside the Docks of Hobart.

So close to the heart of the city. Has a nice viewing area outside, although what makes this place so good is the food. The Parmagiana here was the best Ive ever had. I think management has changed or they have a new chef, but whatever it is, its a winner. The main bar has plenty of room to have a good chat with plenty of TVs for sport etc. Will go back here to eat and have a beer for sure.

I'd like to put out a warning to anyone looking to stay in Hobart, to never book their accommodation at this place. How the staff and management have treated some friends of ours has been absolutely appalling. Our friends had booked months in advance to stay on Christmas night and had attempted to confirm their arrival time with no response from the hotel in advance. Customs House didn't make contact until later in the afternoon on the day while my friends were still on the plane on route, and out of phone reception. On their arrival to the hotel, they found it unattended, locked up, but with a mobile number to call for out of hours. On calling this number, they were told "it's Christmas night we're closed" and that there was no way they would be able to stay. You would think if this was going to be a problem, the hotel would have contacted them a few days in advance to make arrangements. Why take the booking in the first place if you're not going to let them in? Luckily for our friends, we were able to travel down to Hobart to collect them from where my family lives. Since then, and after my friends submitted a formal complaint, Customs House subtracted payment for their non stay from my friend's credit card (unauthorised). She has since been trying to get them to refund the payment for a stay they didn't have, and has been ignored and not called back each day.

Was not a great meal even though it arrived before the drinks. We booked a table but the restaurant was taken over by sailors from the Sydney to Hobart. The staff did the best they could but I would recommend for a quiet meal to avoid the area during the yacht race. And Congratulations to all those who competed.

Great location, very spacious & modern rooms, lovely staff and delicious food. What more could anyone want? It's not exactly cheap but definitely worth the price. Breakfast is à la carte but included in the price. Would stay here again any time.

The place to be for yachtsmen and women after the Sydney to Hobart. It's said you don't complete the race until a pint here. Good ambiance and great selection of beverages.

Great location, central to everything you need to visit in hobart. Exceptional customer service esp from the restaurant staff. Amazing breakfast. Rooms at the back is quite.

Just popped in for brekkie. Whilst my granola was a generous serve & quite tasty, my husbands pancakes were dry & over compensated by too much cream.
The service was less than average. People getting meals out of sequence. We finished our food before coffee & juice even arrived & staff did not apologise for any delay.
To top it off, coffee was undrinkable.

Great stay and the breakfast is better than average hotel offer. Some people commented noise issue but we stay at 1st floor, no issue of noise at all. Be caution of parking as you would need advanced reserve for hotel parking, otherwise you need to park at pay-parking in 1~2 blocks away.

Nice and friendly atmosphere. Breakfast — a la carta — is included and it was awesome. Big portions nicely cooked and presented. Close to Salamanca street and the city Center. Staff was very friendly and supportive. Recommended.

Unfortunately this has been a thoroughly frustrating and unfortunate experience for us — we never write reviews but this deserves a special mention. The hotel is run by the second generation and as a guest there is little to make you feel welcome. There is no secure place for luggage and the staff are poorly trained to deal with customer relations. The bathroom was filthy upon arrival with hair in the basin and shower. The water pressure in the shower was dismal and the temperature kept changing from cold to luke warm. The basin was blocked — we were so put off we took pictures of all of this. The bed was well worn and uncomfortable. With all of the above we did not even bother to speak to management — it would be unfair not to warn potential new customers of this place.

Good place to stay, has all the necessities you can relatively expect from a hotel. The rooms are quaint, small, comfy and soothing. The place has Wi-Fi and almost every meal preference is catered. On the downside the reception doesn't operate 24/7 and you will have to ask its services before 6pm in advance.

Great food, good service, nice warm escape from the cold night air.

Don't stay here on a weekend. It's 5am and the thumping music is still going. (Update) I just bumped it to 3 stars because of the great breakfast. The thumping stopped around 5.30…

Impossible to get any sleep due to the tavern downstairs. Headboard reverberates to bad 90s covers into the small hours, loud banging ensues at 6am in the morning — presumably setting up the resteraunt. A shame because this is otherwise a good hotel — friendly staff, comfy rooms and decent breakfast.

Noisiest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Stained carpet in room and dangerously high step up into ensuite. Breakfast choices very limited, specially for vegetarians. Yesterday's offering: small portion of quiche on thick bed of raw spinach leaves. Room rates grossly overpriced. Amazing how staff attitudes change for the worse when complaining. And to rub it in … breakfast room not open 'til 8am at weekends, even though guests had planes to catch. Hotel rated 3-stars … I wouldn't give it one star. More of a pub than hotel!

Extended family had four great rooms with various harbour views and beautiful old sandstones walls. The bar had a fun and relaxed atmosphere even passed around some seafood tapas. Excellent menu in the restaurant catered for everyone. Staff were friendly and engaging throughout. Didn't really need to move.

Greatest place we've stayed on our honeymoon yet! The room is charming with its convict hewn stone wall. The food is amazing and everyone has made our stay so wonderful! Also, the only place we've been to that acknowledged it was our honeymoon.

The bouncers are homicidal thugs. Stay away they front you when just passing by.

Great location on the waterfront, wonderful staff, friendly bar, beautiful restaurant. In the heart of all the Salamanca action Customs offers a lively experience whether you are enjoying their accomodation, bar, restaurant or function room. Customs 'breathes' Hobart.

Excellent views and really good local beers on tap and specials.

Everything is great, except for the parking. If you aren't out and about, you have to pay for your car to sit there. Make sure you buy a pass off the hotel for each day.
