Reviews of Mercure Canberra 3*
A lot of character here. A little older and a bit tired but rooms, staff and service is fantastic.
The rooms were okay& good location. However do not think it is 4 star: $15 parking fee is ludicrous, no milk in the room, no bin liners… all the little things that you would get in a 4 star were not in place. Reception apologetic about the parking fee but not fair for them to need to explain a bad management decision and not a good start to the stay.
As far as the rooms and hotel are concerned I can not complain. Very nice, clean and great food. However, please do not trust the “secure parking” we had 2 x e mountain bikes stolen from the “secure” parking. Bikes were locked onto vehicle and a code is required to enter carpark but an exit gate does not lock properly and allows anybody to enter. There are no cameras in the carpark area and the carpark backs back onto housing commission so PLEASE do not leave anything valuable at all in your vehicle.
Would not recommend this place to women traveling sole. The Vietnamese woman who was on the desk made my stay an inconvenience.
Value For Money Food Fantastic Service Very Quickly.
We had our wedding reception at the Mercure in December and it was fantastic. The room looked amazing, the food was delicious and the staff were so friendly. They have really great value for money wedding packages including alternate drop and buffet. Emily and Caitlin made the process so easy for us right from the beginning. On the day Caitlin was so friendly and accomodating and we didn’t have any concerns as Caitlin was amazing. We had a buffet and the food was so delicious with many options for us to choose from. We had a beautiful suite we could get ready in as well as use of the Ainslie room. The majority of our guests were from interstate so were able to stay at the Mercure as well and they enjoyed their stay. All the staff were incredible and I would highly recommend the Mercure as a wedding venue!
After an horrendous experience booking with Hotels. Com, it was only thanks to the great staff on reception that we could get a room here on the night we needed. To top it off, when we mentioned that we were going to celebrate our wedding anniversary a bit early with a bottle of wine and room service, our room service turned up with Anniversary congratulations, and 2 glasses of Mt Majura white. Thank you 🙏
Comfortable and quiet in our room with lovely garden view. Staff very attentive.
Lovely staff on reception.
A really warm, welcoming and friendly place. Food is amazing, a great environment and really happy I chose to stay here!
We had a birthday function organised by Caitlin and hosted by Dash and Chris. Everyone was so accommodating, organised and helpful — right from the time we initially booked until the function ended. Thank you!
Excellent hotel in the nation’s capital.
We booked the Mercure Canberra for a week, as we drove over from Adelaide to see the War Memorial. Unfortunately my husband was admitted to hospital for emergency surgery, and we had to extend our stay. Lukas and ALL the staff were amazing, and made me feel like I was cared for while David was in hospital, and nothing was too much trouble for them. The rooms were excellent, and the service was great. Olims did lovely meals (kudos to the Chef and kitchen staff) the location is ideal for the War Memorial, and a short walk to Canberra Centre, where many shops await. Although it was a stressful visit for me and David, we were well looked after both at the hotel and the hospital. So many many thanks to you all. David is improving daily, and we may come back after covid sorts itself out, and try to do Canberra again. Thank you.
Food always great both at the cafe and restaurant. We always stay here when we are in Canberra.
The bar & restaurant are ideal.
Awesome bute room cheers 🍻
Fabulous pet friendly hotel, very happy helpful staff.
Such a welcoming hotel, with everything you need! So amazing to be able to stay with your dogs! Can’t recommend enough!
Omg where to start. Room was warm upon arrival on a hot summers day. No air con on. Air cond not working well in loft. Fridge was not on the cool setting and while not their fault, was smelly from a previous tenant which they attempted to clean when advised. No water supply for part of the first day, lacking pillows so asked reception which they more than willingly supplied after requesting them. 3.29am fire siren the second day then a burst water main to top the evening off. Staff were more than happy to try to assist any requests such as fresh bottled water but for an Accor hotel I really did have expectations a little higher than what we received. The boom gates were broken over 2 of the days we stayed. While an old building you would think was solid but the noise from other tenants was easily heard at all hours.
Very helpful staff and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast.
Fabulous Dog Friendly Hotel! Also Love the Hallway photos of the hotel when being built in 1927!
Such a great deal… stayed here 48 years ago… lovely staff, rooms and amenities.
Great place to stay Old world hotel Great staff Great bar and bistro.
Fantastic room.
nice clean room.
great views.
excellent staff.
Very helpful staff, I arrived with all my worldly goods, and they helped me unpack so I could sort stuff out! Above and beyond!
Young lady working in the Bar last night was very polite & helpful.
Very nice. New n clean. Great parking.
My mother stayed here whilst my father was in hospital for major surgery. I would like to compliment and commend the management and staff for the friendly and thoughtful way they looked after her during this difficult time. My wife and I are very grateful that you made her feel so welcome and made sure her needs were well catered for. We highly recommend Mercure Canberra.
Great staff, good bistro, nice rooms.
The restaurant is great, beautiful food, good servings and presentation was number 1.
I would come back again.
All staff, from reception to bar staff and housekeeping were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here the last two nights. Sensationally yummy meals and easy access to our room. Thank you mercure hotel and all the staff. We shall return thanks to your outstanding service and hospitality Love Jessie and Tommy xx ps Ruth our housekeeper was awesome. Hi Ruth xxx.
Check in was a breeze. I was able to change my arrival and departure dates with ease. Friendly, helpful staff, ample parking, gorgeous, spacious rooms, what more could you ask for? I would definitely recommend and stay here again.
Great food, great atmosphere, great company!
Beautiful place to stay, fun, very friendly staff.
Great visit as always. The restaurant is good and the staff really good fun.
I was there few days ago and I really enjoyed my stay. It was very comfortable, very accessable to most important places that I wanted to visit, the staff were very accommodating given me a very early check in… I was so surprised! Arrived before 10Am and explained that I need to use their toilet, get a map and come back later. But I was told that my room is ready and that I can check in… so I did!
I love the garden! the antique furniture and decore!
I had lovely dinner and posted it in Fbook for my family & friends to share.
The staff were great!
Being an Accorplus member, I am proud of this hotel group and would stay here again!
Arrived last Thursday checked out Friday! Had a reservation for the family 3 bedroom suite! Wow absolutely amazing. The staff were more than helpful and attentive. The food was delicious and in abundance and the grounds are lovely. Considering this historic building opened in September 1927 called The Ainslie to house Politicians and staff the same year Old Parliament House opened and it’s still standing is incredible. Congratulations Mercure Canberra… I will return.
I can order a menu from the night owl but can’t order desert for my son. Place is falling apart our room was nothing like we sore in the picture very unhappy. The two girls at the front desk told me they are the night owl cooks an the desert man has locked the desert doors. When me an my family arrived we were told staff is available 24/7 didn’t want much just a cheesecake with ice cream for my son. But could order lamb ribs/ham cheese tomato toastie slow cooked beef cheek veal Ossining Bucco Lamb Ribs an a cheese plate. Me an my family travel a lot will not recommend this as a family environment.
The Mercure was central for us with all the different activities that we wanted to see. Staff were helpful and very friendly — the meals were and reasonably priced.
Lovely meal in courtyard restaurant. Comfy beds and warm. Friendly helpful staff.
My husband & I got married here about a year ago — well had our wedding reception here & the lovely Rosa & her team at the Mercure Canberra made us feel so welcomed! There hospitality & customer service is so genuine and welcoming! We just had our anniversary dinner here tonight & could not fault anything STILL & it’s been a year ☺️ thank you again to all especially the lovely lady tonight at the courtyard seafood buffet that made us feel like royalty. You are all amazing! ❤️ — с Nathan Po'oi.
When we arrived the staff was very friendly, the rooms are very clean,
The bar was great, the atmosphere was wonderful.
This hotel is located within a 1min drive to the War Memorial. Rooms are large and clean. Hotel is a slightly dated however, I think this is due to the hotel just being a older style hotel. Buffet breakfast, has a few different options, well priced for the offerings. Parking onsite easy to find a carpark. We had a lovely staff member check us in called “Davidson”, who was extremely friendly, helpful and funny.
Charming hotel in Canberra. This hotel is very close to the city and all the highlights of Canberra. The rooms are comfy, the staff efficient and friendly and the pub attached give you everything you need. Great experience.
The food at the pub is 4/10, get uber eats. Hotel is decent and clean. Super old school but quirky. It's like living out The Shining. You will get lost in it's hallways guaranteed.
Informal but efficient and friendly. Rooms can vary between the ones in the extension at the back (the majority) and a few more individual ones in the main house (which I think were getting refurbished when I was last there). Breakfast is average. Not the greatest choice but enough. Good location though as only a 10 min walk down to the centre and always enough car parking at the hotel too.
Hosted an event at Mercure Hotel Canberra. Couldn't be happier with the entire experience. Staff were great, very friendly. Great function room with good facilities.
Room was nice, but the air con broke down on the second day and couldn't be fixed. No substitute room was offered but an efficient portable heater got us through the night. Desk staff confusion between shifts over the room rate offered and the room rate charged. Eventually sorted. The restaurant? Stay in the hotel and eat elsewhere.
The mecure is a little dated in it's interior design and maybe some work could be done on furniture etc. But the building and court yard are great as well as dog friendly rooms that you can stay in. (Rare for Canberra) It did the trick and was sleep able!
Lovely hotel dating to the 1920s. It feels as though it's in a quiet suburb, but it's quite near the center of town — — that's Canberra, I suppose. Rooms are spacious and clean, if occasionally hard to find in the historic layout. Breakfast is good, though the Wi-Fi is rather slow.
Old world charm hotel. Bistro food is top shelf. Excellent breakfast plenty of parking.
Lovely Old Building, thin walls, very basic rooms, breakfast ok. You get what you pay for. Not expensive. A walk to Civic shopping centre.
Friendly and helpful staff. Allowed me to check in early and were resourceful when I asked for anything. I'm not really into the old school charm of the place. I much prefer modern hotels. Breakfast is not really special. And a three course dinner is nearly $80 a head. Best part about it is the size of the rooms plus I got a small backyard.
Dog friendly rooms. I only stopped in for Devonshire tea (which was nice), but heard they have dog-friendly rooms available at the hotel. What a great idea! Thanks Mercure.
We stayed at the Mercure Canberra in February 2018 when visiting family who were having a function that was being held in the hotel. Our room was a king sized room facing onto the central courtyard and was very good. Breakfast was of a good standard at the hotel (buffet style) and rooms were cleaned daily and early in the day which to my mind is always appreciated. Staff in general were always helpful and pleasant. The hotel is only a ten minute walk from the Canberra Center shopping center. I have only neglected to give a five star rating due to lack of a swimming pool. I would stay here again and would recommend this hotel.
Central to our needs. Our small dog "Whisper" was so at home with his own play yard. Very relaxed atmosphere. The staff friendly and helpful. Hope for a room for our next visit. Thanks to all.
Stayed one night at Mercure Canberra on a weekend. Arrived late (9.30pm) and was greeted by friendly and extremely helpful staff at reception. Rang reception to order room service and specifically asked for one quantity of a particular meal, $15. Received a very large meal (equivalent for two or three people) with two bags of chips extra. Upon checking out, I was asked to pay $30 for the meal, on top of parking costs. Not impressed considering the concierge had overcharged for more than what I clearly asked for. We didn't expect the room to be spotless, though it was quite dirty, especially around the beside tables. The only other downfall was the $10 cost for parking per day, as we were guests at the hotel I would've expected this to be waivered. Other than that, it is a lovely hotel. Easy to navigate around, plenty of available parking and a relaxing atmosphere. Standard room was bigger than average size, not cramped or claustrophobic.
We have stayed with them in the past and was happy which is why we stayed again. This time however for the first time we left some items in the room. Once I realised (before the next check in) I called the hotel to let them know and to arrange for the items to be returned to us. Reception said they would call housekeeping and call me back. 5 hours later I still had not had a return call so I called them again. I was told that housekeeping had been emailed but that they had gone home for the day and that someone would call me the next day. Well it has been 3 days and I am still waiting for that call. I understand that it is our fault that we left items in the room, but we notified the hotel and our property should have been recovered. To say that I am extremely disappointed with Mercure Canberra would be an understatement. I will never stay with such a dishonest hotel again and will tell everyone I know never to stay with them either.
Stayed between Christmas and New year's. Hotel is listed as "historic" but it's just run down in so many areas. The courtyard, lobby and restaurant are well maintained and look great but that's about it. Corridors were dirty in several areas and looked like they had not been vacuumed in some time. Most of the hotel could use a lot of painting with some very poor areas visible. Room was not very clean. Dried noodles under the bed were the first sign but then once the lights were on we could see several bad stains on the carpet. TVs were very old, unresponsive and poor quality. Iron board cover needed to be thrown out several years ago. Burnt and ill-fitting. Provided plates and glasses in the room had a bad smell to them and had to be washed before use. We had a loft room which had lovely plantation shutters on a high window. We asked the staff how we close the shutters for the night and just got a shrug. In the end I hung out over the loft railing and closed them using the luggage rack. Breakfast and staff were great and the only thing the hotel really had going for it. Was almost okay with the downsides but then I was slugged $10 for parking in a suburban area with lots of on street parking all around. This Mercure was roadside motel quality at best.
Beautiful hotel. Lovely architecture. A throwback to the olden days. We got a pet free friendly room for our furry baby and the room had a small grass patch with that big tree. Prefect for any doggy buddy. The room even came with a dog bed and a dog bowl plus a few doggy toys. Can't ask for more. Very thoughtful.
Stayed for a conference at the convention centre, walking to and from each day. My room was ready extra early conveniently and the staff were friendly, helpful and well organised. Also worth noting the building is absolutely lovely and the pillows very comfortable.
Room was nice and clean. Good customer service. Although a little confusing in the layout of the hotel. Otherwise it was lovely and I would stay here again.
I had a good time staying at Mercure Canberra. The room was nice, and the bathroom looked like it was updated recently. I liked the courtyard in the middle, and having breakfast overlooking that was great. The hotel is located close to Canberra Centre, and just below Mt Ainslie, which offers a great walking trail to the top with lots of wildlife sightings on the way.
Room and bed were comfortable and breakfast was very good. You may, however, consider having a dedicated toaster for the gluten-free bread that you have available. We particularly like the fact that your hotel welcomes well-behaved pets.
Our experience was really good, specially at our arrival to our room. A lady named Rosa made sure we were really well welcomed with a personal letter, chocolates, and games for my grandchildren. The kids enjoyed very much that beautiful touch.
Staff friendly and accomodating seafood was great value beautiful sauces very flavoursome breakfast was let down all the condiment jars needed refilling at 9 : 10 am and were not refilled by 10 when we left. Also ordered fried egg which never arrived when I mentioned this waiter said didn't it arrive I do apologise. The tvs remote needed attention very hard to work only one extra pillow and one double doona for twin beds rooms very dusty it was quite a rabbit warren to get around long distances from reception to bedrooms. Bathrooms very clean bids ok bistro meal vet nice bar staff obliging. Do not think rooms are value for $200 a night not happy with the Accor groups choice here.
The loft room was good, however I found the railing upstairs to be quite loose which was a worry. The steps down were quite slippery in places and also very narrow on the corners. We tried to dine in the bistro (as the restaurant was full) and found there was a very strong smell as if someone had vomited in there earlier. The breakfast buffet was very well laid out and the food was nice. Staff did not rush us out once we had finished eating. I think that being charged $40 for a roll away bed is quite ridiculous.
We've had a mixed experience staying at the Mecure over the last five nights. Staff at reception were friendly when checking in however, the first room we were shown to was the size of a shoe box. When we complained to reception they were very accommodating and gave us a free upgrade to a huge two bedroom suite. Thank you!
Our new rooms whilst much more agreeable are still in need of an upgrade. The curtains are very thin and keep out little to no light. Not all the power boards work and you can here constant running water in the pipes through the walls.
We accidentally left my computer mouse on the desk in the first room however, when House keeping checked they said it wasn't there? I feel a little extra effort could have gone into locating this.
Breakfast was average. Other guests ordered eggs, completed their entire meal and were still waiting for them to arrive.
We had a two course meal for dinner at $55 per person plus drinks. We waited over an hour for our main course in a half empty freezing room. The waitress had bad body odour and the waiter charged around like a bull in a china shop, all service staff were running thought the restaurant and seemed incredibly flustered. Several diners complained regarding the service and it was definitely not the experience we thought we were going to have.
Mercure Canberra was a very pleasant surprise. The room was very comfortable, the split level worked well and the warm fires added much to the feeling of a home away from home. But the meal was the my most enduring memory. The Entree of prawn fritter and the main of herb encrusted lamb would be listed as my preferred last meal but it was you wait staff that really took the cake. Thank you for an amazing 24 hours.
As I was travelling with my 84 year old (very slow, very arthritic) Mother, I was extremely aware of the improvements that need to be made for differently abled people. A ramp at the entrance would be appreciated. As there were no ramps through the garden courtyard we had to walk the very long way around (we were in the back, Rm 308) plus use the ancient lift to get to Reception & the restaurants. This necessitated passing the world's worst fish tank… either clean & update this atrocity or free the fish & make it a giant planter! All Staff were lovely & extremely helpful. We enjoyed the breakfast service, though the automatic coffee machine is a real disappointment. I bought a coffee from the vendor in the foyer on my second morning, such an improvement! We enjoyed a meal at the Bistro, a good varied menu. We also appreciated the newspapers on offer.
We have a king size room. It is comfortably appointed and even has a nice balcony. The inner courtyard area it overlooks is serene and I have found some lovely relaxing spots to sit throughout the hotel. I love the Mercure chain. Staff are always friendly and professional and the rooms are always clean. Have stayed here since my original post. I get next level service and as an Accor Hotels member I also get a few extras when I stay. Staff are always fabulous. The rooms are always comfortable.
It was a relaxing stay, and the staff were friendly. However the Hotel itself is showing signs of age and obviously needs some work. Appreciated the complimentary sparkling wine and biscuits in our room for my 60th birthday. Did request that we would have tablecloths on our table in the Bistro (where friends were gathering to celebrate my birthday), but this did not happen. Overall pretty good.
I love the decor in the rooms. They are spacious and we always like to look out on the courtyard. It is great to be able to sit by the fire. However I felt the decor in the bar area needs upgrading. It is a very ordinary atmosphere to have a meal in. I am sure it was better last time we stayed.
I felt the hotel ambience left much to be desired. I understand it is an old hotel, but the public areas and hallways really it looks as though it hasn't had any update in decades. There was paint peeling off the walls, the windows were dirty, the carpet was old. An old hotel can maintain it's history and still be up to date. The rooms were quite nice and it was good to see the bathrooms have been modernised. The food and service were superb though.
We coincided our stay with the last weekend of the month seafood buffet. The buffet was varied, fresh and lovely with some Asian touches and a great dessert and cheese section as well. We were thrilled to be upgraded to a King loft room with a comfy bed, a kitchenette, The breakfast was good with eggs to order and a varied spread of the usual items. We enjoyed relaxing after dinner in front of the open fire. It is a few minutes away from the city shops, plenty of free parking and very comfortable in an old worldly way.
Nice old style hotel. We stayed in loft style and room was in good condition. Staff were all helpful and curteous. When we arrived the Sofa bed wasn't ready and I couldn't get the TV to work but we went for a walk and all was ready and fixed by the time we got back. The bar attached to the hotel always had a good vibe in the evenings. And the buffet breakfast was good. Would stay again.
Incredibly expensive, Ive stayed in hotels that charge 4 times less, and offer more amenities to guests. Everything is an expensive add-on. Wifi, breakfast, parking, even water in your room, its a bit ridiculous. It doesn't matter that its the "busy" season, and that its a late check-in, you would think that for $499 you would get a great experience. Its also very old and dated, would not recommend unless you have no other options for the night, which is the only reason I chose it, as I needed a bed.
The hotel facilities are well maintained in line with the original building's purpose. Nice meals in the bistro. Lots of parking, quiet location, guests seem happy.
Beautiful, charming Hotel. Very professional, friendly Staff. Lovely, clean comfortable room with great air-con. Hotel is easy access to War Memorial. Foodwise. Recommend new chefs in Breakfast kitchen. Food was cold, tasteless. Bacon was old and hard, nearly broke my tooth. Both mornings only saw the remnants of the hash browns. Had to ask the waitress to empty the grains from coffee machine and find cereal plates from kitchen. We would love to return but, will eat out.
This was a beautiful hotel with a great piece of history. The bed was very comfortable, but the bathroom was peculiar. The breakfast in the restaurant was worthwhile, and I enjoyed it. However, I certainly didn't enjoy lugging my heavy luggage up those stairs in the original building! Oddly, the floor of our room was uneven on one side of the room, but this wasn't a real problem. You get that with these beautiful old buildings. Worth the stay.
Stopped in at the Mercure Canberra on our way to East Gippsland over the recent Christmas break. We were traveling with our dog, and booked the pet friendly room about a month in advance. The room was very spacious, clean, and also had a private backyard. My wife and I were very happy. London Circuit is only about a minutes drive away, so plenty to choose from for dinner. The price of the pet room was in the $219ish range, but included breakfast for two. I have stayed in other places in Canberra (for business) that charged $40 per person for the same breakfast. Overall, I would highly recommend Mercure Canberra, especially if you are traveling with a pet. Well worth it.
Rooms were big and spacious and the bed comfy. The place is a bit of a maze but pretty. Didn't like that the TV couldn't be plugged into with a laptop, it was locked put so you could only watch TV and their pay movies, plus internet was expensive, then 2 drinks at the bar and a pack of chips came to $18, service was pretty average. Would prob try somewhere else next time.

Beware this place overpriced and overrated Small room big price at least 5 things wrong with the room and a bag of garbage in the corridor for 24 hours Parking is per day no mention of that at all. When booked was told breakfast was included, it was not. All in all a bad experience and I have stayed in other Mecure hotels and been very happy with them.
