The Standing Stones of Stenness are a prehistoric monument located in the town of Stromness, on the island of Orkney in Scotland. The monument consists of four upright stones, which are believed to have been erected around 3100 BC, during the Neolithic period. The stones are made of local sandstone and stand between 3 and 6 meters tall.
The Standing Stones of Stenness are surrounded by a circular ditch, which is approximately 44 meters in diameter. The ditch is thought to have been used for ritual purposes, and may have been filled with water at one time. The stones themselves are arranged in a rectangular shape, with the two tallest stones at the northern end and the two shorter stones at the southern end.
The purpose of the Standing Stones of Stenness is not entirely clear, but it is believed that they were used for religious or ceremonial purposes. The monument is thought to have been part of a larger complex of stone circles and burial mounds that were built in the area during the Neolithic period.
