The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric temple complex located in the town of Tarxien, Malta. This unique structure is believed to have been built around 4000 BC and was used for various purposes, including as a burial site, a sanctuary, and a place of worship.
The Hypogeum is made up of three levels, with the lower level being the oldest and most intricate. It is carved out of solid limestone and features a series of interconnected chambers, passageways, and tombs. The walls and ceilings of the Hypogeum are adorned with intricate carvings and paintings, many of which depict scenes from everyday life, as well as religious and mythological figures.
One of the most striking features of the Hypogeum is the Oracle Room, which is located on the second level. This room is acoustically perfect and is believed to have been used for ritualistic purposes, such as oracles and divination. The room is so acoustically perfect that even a whisper can be heard throughout the entire chamber.
Due to its historical and cultural significance, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a popular tourist attraction and is visited by thousands of people each year. However, due to its delicate nature, only a limited number of visitors are allowed to enter the Hypogeum each day, and advanced booking is required.
