Situated in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, the Dog House Hotel has a traditional bar, with an original wood-beamed ceiling, a roaring fire and a patio. Food is available in the bar and in the restaurant and conservatory.
With a peaceful, rural location, just 20 minutes from the historic university city of Oxford and just 10 minutes from Abingdon, the hotel is rich in original character and dates to the 19th Century.
Today, there are 20 comfortable en suite rooms, including 2 feature rooms. Each room has a TV and tea/coffee making facilities.
The name of the hotel has an unusual origin. Traditionally, the University of Oxford allowed their students to stable horses, but not the dogs. With nowhere else to house the animals, the proprietor of the local inn offered an invaluable dog-sitting service and the venue became known as the Dog House.

Reviews of Dog House 3*
Stayed overnight room was lovely and comfortable, dinner and breakfast was yummy and service from staff was friendly and excellent.
Had a lovely meal today served by Charlise and excellent service by lady behind the bar. Felt very welcomed. Food excellent.
The staff are amazing! Food excellent and such good value. Comfortable lovely rooms …. Could not recommend more highly!
Great pub, great service and great food. Will be back but don’t tell everyone, hidden gem.
Our two night stay was spot on. Felt home from home very friendly atmosphere, very relaxed. Staff could not do enough to ensure our stay was perfect. Comfortable clean bedroom with full bathroom. Best breakfast we have had in a Hotel and we have stopped in a lot including Top Hiltons. Highly recommended & hoping to be back soon. Compliment s to Nadine Hotel Manager x.
We had a very comfortable room and an excellent breakfast.
Lovely food friendly people beautiful place nice atmosphere loved it xx.
Great service and friendly staff.
Lovely safe relaxing atmosphere
Staff are wonderful, polite, friendly with great senses of humour. Food was lovely. Looking forward to coming back again soon.
Great food. Very Covid aware.
Spacious, warm and clean. Great value meals, good sized and very tasty. Friendly and attentive staff. Will definitely go again.
Well organised since the lockdown, food served very quickly
App works well
Only issues we had was flat fosters shandy and had to ask Garlic bread, staff were apologetic tho some not a complaint!
Dodd was great especially the pork belly and the bbq burger was enjoyed by my son
Would return.
Great service and lovely food.
Stopped off at the Dog House for a spot of lunch today. I’d heard that service and quality had gone downhill recently but I found it to be the opposite.
We hadn’t booked so I went in and gave the waiter/manager my contact details, the one way system, sanitising points explained etc I was given two menus and told I could either return to the bar or order at the table.
We ordered Prawn and avocado salad and salt n pepper squid for starters followed by Hunters Chicken and Scampi all of which was served quickly and was very well presented and tasty.
The staff were all knowledgeable and polite and were busy cleaning/sanitising tables as customers were vacating them.
All in all a well run establishment in my opinion.
The only criticism I have is the outside seating area where we sat the floor was scattered with lots of discarded cigarette ends. You could blame the smokers but with the high level of cleanliness observed at the moment it would take someone five minutes to get rid of them.
Have arrived for 2 night stay. So far very nice guy in reception. Alex. Room fabulous, goes across the whole of pub I think. Massive. Lovely old building. Dining tonight. Very busy when we arrived so must be popular place.
All good tasty food bonus that the pup comes along too as very dog friendly!
Don’t go here. They couldn’t even take our order for dinner correctly. My husband got his main but the waiter / manager didn’t add my meal
To the order so I got Nothing. Save your money and go to McDonald’s you get better service.
Nice room, friendly staff and great food.
The worst experience I have ever had. 1 hour and 25 to get our lunch order. Admittedly we did not book so was in the pub area but when looking at the restaurant there was 8 people (who were also complaining) for the delay. Once the food did arrive, there was no apology and half the order was missing. I have never had a good experience at this pub, but keep giving it the benefit of the doubt as it's normally always busy. Never again.
The right location for the party later.
Nice place. Good beer.
Stayed for one night with a colleague on Business. Will be back next time I need to be in Oxford. Lovely rooms in the hotel. Very comfortable bed and fantastic breakfast next morning. Dinner involved a bit of a mix up at the beginning with 2 of us eating, but only one meal put through for the kitchen, but soon resolved once the kitchen staff had been made aware of the error. When all our food eventually arrived, it was beautiful though! We both really enjoyed our meals and would highly recommend the pies available on pie night!
Not only slow service, Each time I have been I ordered the lasagne and it always comes out cold in the centre… Definitely gone down hill over the years as used to be a regular.
I'd come again.
polite staff and great food.
Very nice comfortable stay in a very friendly pub.
Dire service and average food. Booked a table for a family meal, waited ages to be seated (despite no one else waiting). Eventually told to choose our own table. Waited for 10 minutes and then had to chase waitress for menus. Waited another 20 minutes before taking our order (had to chase again). Waited 45 minutes for food, only half of which turned up. Another 10 minutes for the other meals. Difficult to try and keep 2 young children occupied for so long, and didn’t end up eating together anyway. Quite frankly, they’re in “the doghouse” as far as I’m concerned.
Lovely food friendly people welcoming atmosphere would recommend.
Really dog friendly pub and hotel. Amazing food including a doggy menu and doggy ice cream. Brilliant staff. Amazing new management team and kitchen team too. Would highly recommend. Close to Blenheim and Oxford. Meggie and Tewks like it and they’re very fussy well traveled dogs.
Table booked for Father's Day in the bar, so we could bring along our dog. Service was excellent and prompt, good terrific. Will certainly head there again!
Personal review CJPhotography2007 on Trip Advisor, 4/5* room for little improvement needed but overall a good service and great food! June 2019, family visit, adults, teenagers and children (4 generation, 4 tables around 15 sitting)
Went in 2 weeks ago and booked a table for 8. Turned up on the booked night and they hadn’t booked us in! Service was slow! If you do go don’t have the crumble the topping is raw and not cooked!
Lovely mothersday lunch. Nice atmosphere. Our waitress absolutely first class service and friendly.
well done.
Really lovely pub restaurant with great food and super ambience. As Terminator once said “we will be back! ”
Fantastic meal, great price and brilliant service. Well done. Will definitely return soon.
The food was very nice when we eventually got it nearly an hour after ordering. This is a large restaurant and hotel but there were only three (very hard working) members of staff to deal with the hotel reception, the bar and the restaurant tables. Apparently one member of staff called in sick but I feel even with four of a staff it would be a struggle to keep on top of service. Such a shame as it has great potential.
Spent 2 nights at the doghouse and enjoyed every minute of the time there. Accomadation good and slept very well even with the window open. Food was good and a bargain for the portion size, stuffed at each meal. Friendly, helpfull and curtius staff. To knit pick, I would have liked to have a decent coffee in the morning. My friend who also had a room there was also very happy with our stay and we will both be visiting the pub again as it's a bargain.
We’ve just enjoyed a lovely afternoons Sunday lunch here. Staff were very accommodating of our table of 12 and a small child. The service and food were both exceptional. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful with all our requests and were generally a pleasure to have serve us. We were particularly impressed with how patient and kind they were to our small child who wanted to chat and wave to the waiters. Thank you for a lovely afternoon, we will be sure to be returning soon.
Go. Park in big car park. Order drink at bar. Sit. Order food. Wait a little. Nice food comes. Eat. Drink. Pay a good price. Tip. Leave. Very pleased.
Ordered chicken goujons for starters. It came out half warm half cold asked for another and again came out half warm half frozen. Cant believe they would serve chicken like that considering how dangerous it could be.
We visited The Dog House on Saturday 7/7/18
With our daughter as we often do for a bite to eat if we are out & about.
However Saturday we were left gobsmacked by the service from the kitchen!
When we arrived we had a friendly welcome from the barman Josh & a lovely young girl (which I believe was only on her second day! )
We found somewhere to sit, (the pub & garden was pretty much empty as it was after the England game had been on) …
We placed our orders, myself & my daughter both ordered the hunters chicken which comes with onion rings, (I would normally order these as a side if not included with the dish)
However, my husband & daughter received their meals first and had seasoned & started to eat, then mine arrived minus any onion rings! To which I pointed out to the lovely young girl that they were missing, she apologised and disappeared to the kitchen, after a few minutes she came back and said they had put all the onion rings on my daughters plate (which she was already tucking into! ) I said that’s fine but could I please have some also.
She again went into the kitchen looking very nervous & embarrassed, and came back a few minutes later after being told to count how many onion rings my daughter had! (She had 4! )
I asked her if they were really expecting me to retrieve them from someone’s dinner plate that they had seasoned & had started eating some time ago by now?
Instead of serving me 2 FRESH onion rings!
Sadly this was not their finest hour. Really poor service and all our food was significantly over cooked. There were so few staff working that it wasn't even worth complaining. Has been good in the past. Putting this visit down to a severe lack of good staff. Please get more!
Wow! Where do I start?
I think I will start with just thanking every single member of staff that worked so so hard on June 9th 2018 to make our wedding so great!
General manager Jean P is an absolute credit to the hotel, along with the two girls that worked all day (Caroline & TJ) on helping set up, serving drinks all day, waitressing and all had smiles on their faces ALL day! We are both very great full for all the hard work these guys done that day.
Would also like to tha…nk the chefs for the fantastic meals, everyone absolutely loved the food and the generous portion sizes!
We stayed in the superior room which was lovely, clean, lots of space and a lovely view of the garden.
Anyone looking at having the dog house for their wedding reception/hotel stay/ meal out will not be disappointed!
We can not fault a thing from our whole experience so a big well done to all staff and a huge thank you from the new Mr & Mrs Hosier!
Very friendly staff and efficient service (even though they were also serving a party of 50! ). Food was very good.
Me and 12 work colleagues went to the Dog House for lunch a couple of weeks back and the experience was not at all what we had expected. We had booked a table in advance so the restaurant knew we were coming. When we arrived there was only a few other tables seated so wasn't overly busy at the time. We ordered food and waited… Over an hour later our food started coming out and it was not nice. Everyone said their food was only just warm, the ribs were dry and fatty, my seafood platter was I would say, only just cooked through, the lasagna looked like a bowl of slop. We all left very disappointed. Would not return again.
I like this place because of it's character. It's definitely a good feeling being here.
Come, see and taste, delicious food & beer yourself.
Perfectly customer orientated service by the staff!
Manager must be an idiot. Hasn't addressed the problems from the last visit. Terrible service. Terrible system. Poor menu. Classic caesar salad: gem lettuce, croutons, anchovies and dressing: £8.49! I know that the anchovies are only 20p because they are missing from the vegetarian Caesar which is £8.29. However this dish is not on the till system anyway. Had rump steak instead, asked for medium rare, but got well done tough as old boots. Never got English mustard I asked for. I had to go to a shed to get cutlery whilst dish got cold. Queue to pay was 10 minutes. No other staff rolled up sleeves to help at bar. Left it all to one poor girl. Manager apparently not on site. I do not think the waiter had ever been a customer in a restaurant and never received any training either. Altogether a gruelling experience. Shan't be back for a long time.
Service was a bit slow but food was excellent and accommodation was good.
Lovely friendly pub nice a warm. Food was grate didn't have to wait to long considered it was busy would recamond a visit. Will visit again next time we are in Oxford.
Fantastic food. Cooked to a high standard. A very welcoming but relaxed atmosphere. The staff really are helpful and freindly. All in all a fantastic pub. Well worth a visit.
Very nice meal, but we sat with empty plates for about ten minutes after our main course as all the staff were too busy rearranging the tables and didn't notice us despite walking past us on several occasions. Our desire for a dessert subsided and we decided to leave. A shame. It was as if we were not there.
Lovely Mother’s Day dinner, efficient and lovely service, didn’t wait long at all for food which was delicious and all for great value! Even gave us a little Thornton’s chocolate I mum bar. Will definitely come again and recommend!
Exceptional food, particularly amazing pudding selection. Nice environment — staff attentive even when they had a wedding reception going on elsewhere in the property.
Food was fairly good but service quite slow. The roast dinner and the ribs came with an unusual selection of veg, and a ridiculously large amount of broccoli. The childrens' starters were called "chicken lollipops". I'm not convinced they know what a lollipop looks like as they were just strips of chicken. The childrens' starters also came with a massive salad. In an ideal world I'd love to think children would eat the salad, but I doubt hardly any do. In this heightened time of food waste discussion I wonder if they might reconsider the amount of salad and veg they provide as garnish. That being said, it's a lovely pub with very friendly staff.
I am not going to blame the staff on duty today in the restaurant for a hugely disappointing Sunday lunch experience. I am questioning the management and parent company about the dire drop in standards (have been patrons for 25+ years), and the embarrassment of taking 1st time guests today. We had a pre booked table for 6 for 3pm and we were early. We eventually got served at 3.50. There were no Yorkshire puddings to accompany the beef, and a polite request for 'pink as possible' beef was met with a dried up offering. The pork was supposed to come with `apple sauce ', but this emanated as half an apple, complete with pips which had been barely cooked. I would have also thought that a Hotel of such history in a prime location could have given us a grown up choice of veg and gravy from which we could serve ourselves at the table instead of having it all dolloped on the plate. It was like a canteen. And the serviettes/napkins?! Beyond anything we`ve ever seen in a * place. A single sheet of what was almost bog roll. Tawdry and cheap beyond belief. Please get your act together Chef and Brewer and the Dog House. Our single is for the hard working front of house staff who were severely unsupported. Please get your act together as there were other disgruntled customers, and I have never ever posted a complaint before.
The B&B was clean and tidy. Comfy beds and warm. With breakfast included it was good value.
The bar and restaurant were very cosy and nicely furnished. It wasn't busy when we were there and the staff were very friendly and attentive.
The breakfast was very good but dinner was a little disappointing for me. I had sea bass with scallops and risotto. The scallops were a little undercooked but the seabass was ok. I had never experienced risotto quite like it. It seemed to be risotto rice with a creamy sauce stirred through which is not how risotto should be cooked. However the burgers had by my teenage children went down a treat. It would seem that burgers and grill food is ok but the chef hasn't quite grasped food that is a little different.
A country pub. Great for families. It's typical pub fare with the food a notch above average. You'll need to drive here but there are better and cosier pubs out there. It's perfectly serviceable though and good for a heart lunch. They do a ploughman's lunch which always wins points in my book.
The car park is spacious but on the other side of the road (with a few spaces available on same side too). The waiting staff were very friendly and polite but weren't too sure how the vouchers (from their own website) worked, and we (with a baby per adult) had to go to the bar to get the bill split so we could use BOGOF vouchers. There are vegetarian options (inc. Halloumi as fish and chips) and food was good but not amazing. Seemed a bit slow to arrive despite being not that full (lunch time), about an hour from arrival to food but we were slow ordering. We booked a table in advance and they gave us a big one with lots of space for all the high chairs and were very good at clearing the table so little hands couldn't grab things.
The room was a good size and the bed was comfortable. But unfortunately the room was dirty. I'm sure it had not been dusted for a. Long time and the head board was in tatters. There was hairs on the shower mat and a lot of grime and Stan's around the wall behind the kettle. I would have complained had work not paid. I won't be staying here again. The food in the restaurant was OK, it was. Very standard pub grub.
Excellent Sunday roast, large portions, Value for money. Busy between midday and 2.00pm so advise going around 3.00pm. Friendly helpful staff. Ample parking and wheelchair access. Children welcome.
Lovely bar, refurb has really helped. Need to do more in the outside area.
Nice food, decent price, and a nice place!
Pretty enough pub, food looks a little dated (the broccoli was almost grey) but still tasty enough.
We had been to this Hotel 4 occasions before and found the service good. But we recently stayed over the bank holiday and it has gone down hill big time. We asked for a table to be booked for dinner for 8pm when arriving at the restuarant the waiter had no reservation for us and then he admitted it was his fault as he should of booked it for us. By the time we ordered it was 8.30pm the main course was finished by 9.45pm then when we went to order a sweet the waiter said the chefs finished at 9pm and has gone home. The coffee and tea facilities was in the room but no milk provided also left with only half a toilet roll between us. Standards have dropped and staff do not appear to know what there doing. We did find out from the two original members of staff (who couldn't of been more helpfull) that it's under new management. We won't be going back.
Beautiful restaurant with lovely atmosphere. Food was good. Staff were very rude and inattentive. Had to ask a few times for dessert menus and to get drinks. Kids food arrived piping hot so it had to be left for a good ten minutes to cool down. I would come back as it was a good family restaurant but would hope the staff were different.
Comfortable, clean room, had everything we needed. Good choice at breakfast. Very nice hotel.
Attended a pre arrange party for approximately 50 guests. The food was adequate, service slow and half a guests soup was on the plate the bowl came on. I expected better.
Had a nice bean chilli. Food is good and reasonable price. Very nice setting, lots of seats.
Large party, food mass produced. Meals not served together. I had finished my main course before my husband even got his. Food adequate.
Nice hotel to stay for a couple of days. Personnel was very friendly. Rooms were clean, food was good. We had a room which had been smoked in though, but we got an other room immediately.
I complained about a meal being over cooked and was then presented with a cold meal. After complaining the "manager" accused me of being obnoxious to his staff and was told to leave and never come back. 100% on your customer service. I wouldn't recommend this place even if I was paid to do so…
Classy atmosphere but still distinctly pub (perfect in my books). It was a rainy day but the beer garden looked lovely.
Used to really enjoying eating here, but management seemed to change a while a go. Food and service gone down hill a lot. We don't visit any more.
Came to eat on a Sunday afternoon. Good service and food was pretty good. Will go back!
Nice quiet location near Abingdon. The rooms are spacious, the shower powerful and the beds extremely comfortable. The beer is good with real Ales. The food was OK, although the Tom Kerridge Meat Pie that I ate was poor — pastry too thick, not enough filling and overcooked. Service was not great both in the evening and the next morning. Food in the evening took a while to arrive, not everyone in the group were served together, some were missing a course and this had to be quickly prepared. Neither of the individuals serving seemed to have much waiting experience. Breakfast was tasty enough, but the coffee was a little Cold.
Great service, great food, try it.
Parking at night maybe be troublesome as it isn't very well lit. The establishment is very nice, clean and friendly. Food for the price is acceptable. Cheap and cheerful in my opinion, meals averaging £10 with the option of having cheap £4.99 basic dishes as well. All in all not bad, would have expected table service for the "look" of this place. But it's grab a table and order at the bar.
We use the Dog House regularly for meals on Sundays. The food is consistently good pub grub. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mice atmosphere and friendly staff, a nice clean English pub. Good food at a reasonable price.
Thank you our stay was great, room clean and tidy, everyone very welcoming the food was fab and the price to stay even better :).
Goog experience, I will do it again. Bathroom is not really comfortable but you know, it's a country house. Otherwise the resraurant is fantastic, nice atmosphere and the location is good. To move call the local King's taxi, very nice people.

RespondSaddened the place seems to be going downhill. I have had some good meals here in the past but today, after waiting 50 minutes for my order to arrive, with only one half-hearted communication of "sorry for the delay" I left. Empty of stomach but full of disappointment. I cannot rate the food because it never arrived, but 0 out of 10 for service. Our patronage has now stopped.

RespondWe stayed 5 nights at the Dog House, having been able to secure a 5 nights for the price of 4 deal with Old English Inns. Having read other reviews I wasn't expecting a great deal, but was pleasantly surprised. The first room we were given was spacious, but looked out onto an internal space, as there was very little air movement, the room was hot and stuffy. However, the receptionist moved us the next day to another room at the front of the hotel. The staff are friendly and polite and are certainly an asset to the hotel management. The location is good, being ideally placed close to the A34 and the A338. Salisbury is about 90 mins drive away and Oxford just 10 mins from the Park and Ride. Plus for all fellow petrol heads its just 10 mins from the Williams F1 factory at Grove. The Black Horse pub in Gozzards Ford is a good place to go to for delicious food if you fancy a change from the Dog House.
