Cute little plantation apartment house turned hotel. Private rooms are quite comfortable and the only complaint is the plantation-era thin walls that share all the noise… not recommended for a honeymoon. But my room stayed cool enough to be comfortable with a ceiling fan.

So much aloha here! The staff is the best. The food is delicious.

Smack dab in Hilo town, the Wild Ginger Inn offers convenience, quite, and a relaxed environment. The grounds are equipped with greenery and an awesome view of Hilo Bay. Highly recommended! I’ll definitely be back again. Thank you Christie, along with the entire staff, for your friendly and warm hospitality.

Well priced, friendly staff, great location.

The shower makes me feel tall. Room comes with refrigerator and microwave is a plus. No A/C, but even on mid summer overcast day not needed.

I haven’t expected miracles but the place is not so bad. I’ve liked the big garden and jungle around.

Interesting room on a cliff. Staff was super friendly and helpful, area was a little questionable. Room was very reasonably priced.

This is one of the cheapest rooms you can get in this area and you get what you paid for. This is an old building, old showers, old beds, small rooms, college aged kids carrying on outside your room until the wee hours of the night. This isn't a place to take your family, it's for budget travellers. Breakfast is fruit, bread, rice pudding of sorts, and a variety of quick breads. Nothing fancy, like the rest of the place.

Really really rustic place.   They put me in a dorm with the volunteers of the hostel. So the room was extremely messy. No bath towel, no blanket (you have to pay an extra for it). Because this was the dorm of the volunteers, they didn't clear it… So disappointed about the place.   There is a kitchen, but bring your own glass or cup, there is no. … Also, it's impossible to book online, you have to send your credit card number by email, with is not super secure and not super "2018"…

WorkAway place! As a young traveler, working here is really convenient! The rooms and beds are fine, the only down part was the showers… The view and service is also very good!

Even if it doesn't look good at first, the Wild Ginger Inn is a nice hotel, with clean and nice rooms. The staff are attentive and helpful.

Stayed 2 out of 3 days. The facade doesn't look like the website fotos … I think this place, structurally, has seen better days. The staff were friendly and the continental breakfast was generous with good fruit and goodies. Probably we got less for what you paid for!

I love coming back to this beautiful place and feeling so at home. The Love family, their staff, and fellow travelers all make The Wild Ginger a one of a kind accommodation. They serve a great breakfast daily of tasty breads, toast, fruit, coffee, juice and a to die for rice dish not to be missed. The kitchen, laundry facilities, exercise area, and grounds all make the Ginger a great place to stay while visiting Hilo. It is an easy and safe walk to downtown. The biggest highlight for me is being treated like family. I would look nowhere else for my stays in Hilo. Highly recommend!

If your looking for a place for spiritual healing, This is the place. For my experience, when I walk into this garden I felt and saw wow this is the garden of adam n eve. Before they were deceived by the snake. And the people I met was good.

Super nice and very informative with local attractions and events. The staff even let us barrow beach towls for the day. The 2night stay was very relaxing. Others staying we're polite and quiet during the pm hours. Awesome price and the arch bridge has a awesome view.

Lost a customer because they demand a government issued state ID from every person staying, no exceptions. As someone who has worked at a hotel? Ridiculous, not necessary, and extremely unreasonable as they are also a hostel; traveling people from many different walks who run into losses and problems with paperwork and need a place to stay come to expect more flexibility from establishments featuring themselves as travel-friendly. Not cool.

I've been traveling around the world for a very long time. They did not make me feel welcome, and, in fact, they made my distinctly uncomfortable. I won't be back. My money will be at the Dolpin next time. It's a shooooort walk.

Definitely worth a stay. Laid back atmosphere, close to the ocean and only two minutes away from downtown. Super friendly staff!

My family and I stayed for 1 night when we visited the Big Island to fly, hike and bus the volcanic action. I can honestly say that if anyone is looking for the perfect place to chill out then The Wild Ginger Inn is it! The rooms are basic but neat and tidy; its a stone throw from the centre of Hilo; the vibe is one of rest and relaxation; the home made breakfast was delicious (Loved the rice pudding. Can you send the recipe please) ; and the hosts were fantastic, welcoming, accommodating and great Pokemon raid buddys. From the bottom of our hearts, mahalo.

An old hotel in the Hawaiian style. The room (#16) is small, and the floor is sloping, but it is very clean and the bed was very comfortable with nice quality linens and towels. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a Hilton or Sheraton this is not the place for you. But if you want to enjoy the charm and ambiance of old Hawaii, you cannot beat this stay for the price. ps. Very nice island style continental breakfast too.

A group of 20 of us stayed one night. I was lucky and had room #13… upstairs, clean, good size, ensuite bathroom and shower that was clean. TV — frig — and microwave although I didn't use any of the amenities. The bed was comfortable and the ceiling fan was perfect for keeping cool. (Who needs A/C in Hawaii? ) The reception area was comfortable and the owners were lovely friendly people.

Very cozy and comfortable. Extremely comfortable beds. Great local continental breakfast. I'm local and I stay here! :) Great value for the price. Many complaints I've read are things that just happen in Hawaii and don't reflect poorly on the hotel itself. It's all around a very consistent, nice space with a kitchen downstairs, refrigerators in the rooms, 3 block walk to downtown Hilo restaurants and shops, if you're on any budget or just don't like paying overpriced stuffy ritzy hotels… this is your spot.

I stayed at the Wild Ginger for nearly a week in April 2017 and wouldn't think of going elsewhere now. The room was comfortable and the staff hospitable and friendly. This place is REAL, not some kind of plastic tourist trap, and the homemade baked goodies served at breakfast every morning are just one example of how this place is special. I loved being there!

Very nice hostel. We had a private room right in Hilo for $55 per night. We shared a bathroom with only one other room. Kitchen small but passable. Lobby area was very nice with many tables and easy chairs. Breakfast consisted of fresh papaya, various sliced bread and banana breads, spreads, and a rice pudding type thing. Close to Richardson's beach where we experienced the best snorkeling so far this trip.

This place is rustic, antique and fits right in. It's obviously authentic to Hilo. Built as housing for plantation employees in the early 1900's it's changed very little, if at all. Wood floors, slatted windows and just the basics, but clean and the beds are very comfortable. The surrounding reserve is FILLED with native plants and the bay is within view. Staying here makes one feel as though it's still the early 1900's. I love it.

I could not express with words the love I have for this place. Best place to stay in Hilo, best staff, best garden, best Al. Mahalo every one, I felt just like home. See you very soon.

The accommodations was simple and had a home feel to it, used to be a plantation. They provide breakfast everyday from 730-9. The employees are very nice. If you just need a bed to sleep in and a warm shower this place is for you. It is very affordable.

The manager stole a bottle of vodka to share with the staff. Dangerous pesticides were sprayed every day during cleaning. Curfew is enforced. Limited Wi-Fi. Charged ridiculous prices for poor quality surfboards. Massive tree on adjacent property drops massive tree limbs. Don't stay there the place is below quality. The frogs will keep you up at night if you are a light sleeper.

The son of the lovely owner wouldn't allow me a cup of coffee in the morning. His wife was even worse. Many nice places to spend your money and be treated treated with respect. The place could have been clean.

Quiet and romantic hotel, family run, but in the years come — rooms and bathrooms are outdated. Wi-Fi is free of charge can be received only in the reception area; a deposit will be required for cash payment.

Generally pleasant, clean and good service. They have three floors for the hotel rooms with private bath, and a kitchen on each floor (at least on the lowest and the lobby level as far as I know). The lower floor kitchen area attracts some shady characters but we did not have any problems except some noise in the wee hours of the night. They have a nice breakfast with fresh fruit and cakes.

We stayed here for 16 days and will be back again. The rooms are clean and quiet. The staff is very friendly. We love the lobby area that is open all day and night with a beautiful view. Breakfast is home made and plentiful. We love that the location is within walking distance of the downtown area. Looking forward to returning!

I loved staying here! It was great and the people were sweet as well. I recommend staying here and enjoying the chill laid back atmosphere. If you love sweet chill vibes, please stay here and dig the great orchestra of tree frogs that will sing you to sleep. The breakfast is delicious and the beds are comfortable.

Awesome hostel, nice garden/gazebo, friendly staff, fresh papaya for breakfast. A much better vibe than some other hostels in Hilo.

40€ the night without a TV with a fridge with a communal shower is good and inexpensive!

The staff were very friendly and the hotel had a unique character. The breakfast consisted of some fruit, breads and rice pudding. There is a nice courtyard with a volleyball net and grass. Fresh orchids were placed in vases outside the rooms. Some downsides: (i) internet is available only in the lobby area, (ii) a few roaches, (iii) showerhead was made of cheap material and broke the first morning, (iv) warm water availability in the showers seemed to be activated by flushing the toilet, but this was not discovered immediately.

Great prices, clean rooms, and friendly Staff! Best place in Hilo for any price, whether you just need a spot to park your tent for the night, want a dorm, or private one person room, even if you would like a full on hotel room this place suites anyone. *Unlike some Big Island Hostels didn't appear to be any roaches or bedbugs. *BONUS, you can rent many useful items. Umbrellas, boogie boards, coolers, and more.

If you ever find yourself in Hilo without a place to stay, I would highly recommend the room at this Hotel/Hostel with the king size bed. It was so comfortable, with it's scarlet sheets and kingly spaciousness, that I preserved it not only in my memory, but in my phone's as well. Undoubtedly the most comfortable $75 night I spent in Hawai'i. And to the very nice attendant at the Hilo Bay Hostel, thank you for finding me this place! Your kindness left an indelible impression upon my spirit.

We have stayed here twice and like the laid back atmosphere. Owners are very nice and while the building is very old, they have done a nice job with a Hawaii'iana feel. I would call this place a 1 star hotel with a 4.5 star experience.

It's roots. Dormitories as the rooms are not very clean (especially the bathroom) is pleasant and the breakfast perfect.

I call to stay here for the night and I tell them how my boyfriend's id was stolen and we just have his expired temporary one that's faded. We find a ride right before it's dark and get there with all our stuff and they tell us we can't stay there. I asked for the owner and he said he was the owner and it's their policy to not accept the temporary id. Would have been nice to know before we got a ride there instead of them leaving out a pregnant woman out on the street. His response, "that's just our policy". Clicked the phone on me (was talking to them on my cell as I was walking down the street as I was to upset to stay in there and talk in person) NO HEART. No aloha.

True Aloha! Wild Ginger has an Old Hawaiian feel that's missing at other hotels on the island. The staff makes you feel like your in the company of old friends; no doubt you'll make new friends there. I was pleasantly surprised: the Hawaiian Plantation feel, the ocean views, the natural surroundings, the central location, the value for the $, and most of all the hospitality! I will fondly remember my first stay there and look to come back soon :).

I love the Big Island and I love the Wild Ginger. The accommodations and staff are welcoming and wonderful. One of the best parts of my time on the Island was receiving a beautifully woven palm frawn bird as a gift from Charlie, a kind man whom I met the the Wild Ginger. If you are out there, thank you Charlie! You are a beautiful artist and you make the Wild Ginger and the world a better place.
