This inn is a little piece of heaven! Beautiful rooms, spectacular views, have delicious breakfast on the lanai, great location and wonderful hosts. Highly recommend.

I don’t know how many years we have stayed here, but we absolutely love, love, love, this place. The Bamboo Room is “our” room. Ric & Maria are awesome hosts!

Spent two wonderful nights here. House is very nice and comfortable, with ocean-view and beautiful garden. Host and hostess are super friendly and helpful, providing lots of valuable tour advice, and made delicious breakfast.

Hale Kai is a beautiful location that can't be beat. Ric and Maria made us feel like we were visiting friends in Hawai'i. The breakfasts were excellent. They were wonderful about share ideas and info for the best way to explore and enjoy the island. The room was very nice and well kept. We would definitely stay here again.

Good location close to Hilo with beautiful views of the ocean.

The view from the lanaii was beautiful. Breakfast was buffet style and the hours were set. Good location from downtown Hilo.

Drove over from hilo side with the visiting fam. Lady at front desk was baffled we brought 2 cars. Visitor parking was as good as the customer service. Terrible.

Stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon. Absolutely stunning view and great location. We were expecting just your typical continental breakfast bright and early but instead we got amazing coffee and homemade HOT breakfast served overlooking the ocean. Highly recommend. Also, our hosts shared with us things to do locally and were available when needed. Loved it! — The Kraft’s.

Great place to stay overlooking the water. No beach access, but it was nice.

Host is not just a host but a Super host. He even gave us a lift to Downtown hilo. This location has a 6 star view of the ocean and a breakfast to match. Hope this place exists forever.

Very horrible experience in Honolulu bay bed and "breakfast" hotel. Their breakfast is self-served. They put frozen food and drinks in refrigerator. However, almost all foods are expired, and the rest of them even doesn't have an expired date. We found that after we had the food which really harms us a lot. I won't recommend it to anybody. Since when we reflect that problem to the owner, she is really regressive and rude to us. Just hope tourists be cautious on choosing hotel. You may have really disgusting experience. Good luck!

No frills accommodations, but nice and clean with plenty of room in our single suite. Clearly well taken care of. The hosts were great and the home cooked breakfast with the other guests on the lanai was a perfect start to our Hilo adventures.

We were very happy to spend a few nights in Hale Kai during our honeymoon. Friendly hosts who advised us very well on how to handle tropical storm Darby. Spacious and comfortable rooms. Unbeatable views. Good starting point for trips to Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls and Volcano. Excellent pool area with a good sized pool and hot tub (very nice to switch between them). If we visit Big Island again, we will return. Mahalo.

In the spirit of full disclosure, my spouse was less than excited when I made reservations to stay here; he doesn't particularly like the idea of a B and B… but how could he refuse after the marvelous (and accurate) reviews?! Luckily, Hale Kai is beautiful: breath-taking views, comfortable bedding, delicious breakfasts and accommodating hosts. Hilo is a great little town with a funky-cool vibe and the people were sooooo gracious, welcoming, and polite. Hale Kai makes going to see the east side of the Big Island/ Volacnic Park a piece of cake. Mahalo Ric and Marie — — we'll be back.

Absolutely amazing B&B just a few minutes from downtown Hilo. Stunning, unobstructed views of the ocean from your room. We were able to sit for hours, watching whales just a few miles away jumping and spouting. Fabulous, friendly hosts that prepared tasty meals with fresh local ingredients. We hope to make it back here again one day!
