We have stayed at the Inn several times over the years and continue to return. The rooms are beautiful and the Inn itself is lovely. The staff are friendly and make it feel more like a home experience than a hotel. Even in this Covid pandemic time we were able to feel that life is beginning to get back to normal. All precautions are still being taken.

Amazing experience. Our room was upgraded to a beautiful third floor suite. Quiet and simple with the old southern hospitality. Margo is an amazing staff member. She remembered our names asked great questions to get to know us and was a pleasure to see daily. Highly recommend. Breakfast was made to order! Would love to come back.

The staff hasn’t failed to impress us on any level. Would definitely recommend this to all of my friends and family. They even surprised us with a bottle of bubbly for our anniversary and a card signed by the staff.

Outstanding service with attention to detail. A historic home to add to anyone’s bucket list. In my opinion, it is the best way to immerse yourself in Charleston.

Although the carriage house was fantastic. We were never told that we would not be staying in the main house… secondly, for the 3 night $1000 stay the happy hour appetizers were terrible. The selection and quality. The breakfast was average. The staff was friendly ;)

My wife and I stayed here for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The accommodations were fantastic and the service was great. Complimentary tea time with cream sherry and brandy was a sweet treat. I would highly recommend them!

The staff was fantastic; willing to go out of their way to make our stay memorable and stress-free. It was our first time here, but definitely not our last!

My wife and I have enjoyed every moment of our stay. The coffee, meals, atmosphere, etc were all amazing. My only gripe was the loud construction work going on outside early in the morning, but that obviously doesn’t affect the rating. Great place!

A wonderfully kept old home that's become an Inn. The accommodations were excellent, gracious and comfortable The concierge Margo made our visit special with her great personality and the information she gave us about the history of the house and places to eat. They served us a most excellent breakfast in our room. I will stay there whenever I go to Charleston.

A quick stay over Thanksgiving, the Rutledge House Inn has been a wonderful experience. The staff are exceptional and friendly and the amenities for being a B&B are plentiful, from delicious breakfast to afternoon tea. We stayed in the Carriage House building. The room is well sized and equipped. The beds, which are memory foam, are comfortable. There were plenty of outlets to plug in devices to charge. The fridge stocked with bottles of water was a nice touch as well.

Great location, Southern hospitality, friendly guests. Everything was perfect and, as a history buff, it was amazing to stay in a house that hosted and was home to such important people!

When I stayed here a few years ago, the great service we received was very impressive, me so I thought I should finally give them a Google review. We had actually booked a room in the old stable house but because they had a cancellation they upgraded us for free to the John Rutledge room. That was spectacular. The staff was very nice and helpful. The room were very clean and comfortable and the house was within walking distance of everything in downtown. Today I am a Charleston Tour Guide. I love taking my customers by the John Rutledge house and talking about the history now too. If you wish to be close to the downtown historical area and stay in a beautiful bed and breakfast I highly recommend this one.

We are Summerville residents who aren't too far away from Charleston, every so often we'll come down to the French Quarter and stay/play for a weekend — it's a privilege to be so close to so much history, world class restaurants and accommodations. We have and continue to see quite a lot and enjoy the unique experience Charleston has to offer. On suggestion of a great friend passing up through Hilton Head and into the Grand Strand, we settled on booking a couple of suites …at the John Rutledge Inn. He he his wife staying in the Carriage House, they had a well mannered puppy in tow with them, we booked a main suite, William Moultrie, so we had half of the main house. It was phenomenal. I can't say enough in the way of appreciation and gratitude we had to our amazing staff. From the ease of online booking, touching base with our amazing concierge, Jim (and then meeting the rest of our truly exceptional staff), upstairs hors d'oeuvre selection, a selection of sherry, porto, (and yes) we did tap into the Brandy before finding a cool spot on the balcony — the attention to detail and accommodation was truly remarkable. At my query — Jim booked us a table at 82 Queen for later in the evening, and we had a couple of warm up cocktails at Husk Bar before having dinner at the library at 82 Queen, afterward and well stuffed returning to turn in.

Staff is friendly and accommodating. Rooms are clean, beds are beyond amazing. Food at breakfast was yummy! I was sad to leave.

Fabulous place! Wonderful hospitality & 5 Star accommodations! We stayed in the George Washington Suite which is absolutely incredible! Our Concierge Margo was so personable & amazing! We appreciate everything she did to make our stay in Charleston such a great time for our family! We will definitely be back! Loved the history of the house, the southern charm & hospitality! Delicious breakfast served in our room at our choice of times! So much fun for my husband & son who are both named John Rutledge to stay here!

Splendid stay. Margo the concierge was great and they welcomed our dog Zeus with open arms (60 lb Airedale).

A wonderful vacation experience. The staff was welcoming, freindly and at all times helpful from the time we thought about booking a room through our departure. The carriage house room was lovely, comfortable and relaxing. This is a trip I won't forget and this Inn is a significant reason why.

The building is beautiful. The room was nice. We were put in the Carriage House, which we weren't expecting. That was not so great. In order to get coffee in the morning you had to take two keys (one for the room and one for the house itself) and walk across a courtyard (in the rain I our case) and into the main house. It would be nice if they put a Kuerig coffee maker in the rooms not actually in the house. The staff was not friendly — other than Maurice who brought our breakfast. And we had to wade through 4 inches of water in the parking lot with our luggage when we checked it. Outward appearances were much better than actual experience. Wish we had made the tea — but we were drying out from our check in ordeal!

The house is everything you would expect from a beautiful historical house. But, what makes this place really special is the staff. They treat you like a VIP as if you're the only guest staying at the property.

Loved it! I was a little skeptical of the B& B component, but this was truly fantastic! the staff was awesome to a person! The rooms were nicer than most hotels, from the Tempurpedic bed and pillow to the chocolate turn down service, just great. One thing I have say is the breakfast was not like most of the included free breakfasts I've had over the year, it was a made to order breakfast (you place your order the night before) and was fantastic! I can't go back!

Stayed in the carriage house for honeymoon in 1994. Maybe again in '96 (memory fades). Very comfortable, service was excellent. Loved the breakfast in bed. Location is great, easy walk to everything you'll want to see in Charleston's historic district. Chose this B&b based on Frommers review as the best in Charleston. Since then we've stayed in a lot of other b&bs and I can say I agree with Mr Frommer.

The cleaning manager was rude asked her to contact me she never did. I asked again to talk to her was totally ignored. I'll never set foot in that place again.

As a young couple experiencing Charleston for the first time, we lucked out to discover the John Rutledge House. Not only was the house incredible, the service was fantastic! Concierge service does not get better than what Mike Jackson and Jim O’Neill provide. The room we stayed in was awesome — it tastefully blended period elements of the home's bones with modern amenities, and just felt peaceful and tranquil. After a great night's sleep, we met other amazing couples down for breakfast and were treated to a world class breakfast and a great cup of coffee. We had such a great experience on our first trip, we will definitely come back to Charleston with other couples in tow. To sum it up: Historic. Cultured. Southern Charm.

When I take my time to visit a place for information and go in to see what they have to offer and amenities and the concierge does not have time to give me this information and I am told told I can get it off their web site, I am not very impressed / My wife and I travel extensively and are able to pic and choose anything we like, I am an humble person but do not like it when some one in a position acts this way. We were not even offered a chance to view a room etc.

Beautiful bed and breakfast. Loved the history and the great location. It is within short walking distance to the wonderful restaurants that charleston has to offer. The staff is very courteous and extremely friendly. Our room was amazing. A very romantic setting. The only shortcoming that we encountered was that our breakfast ticket was lost, so we missed out on breakfast. The staff was very apologetic and offered to prepare our meal right away. We would have waited but we wanted to go enjoy the city. I would still recommend this destination as a must stay for anyone visiting charleston.

As far as friendly, helpful staff, a great locations and a beautiful hotel, it doesn't get any better than the John Rutledge House Inn. Be sure to take advantage of the free breakfast, the food is fresh and of a superior quality. Just an example of how great this place is; we checked in to their pet room with an old sick yellow lab (we came to Charleston for water therapy) who began barking after we went to dinner. The young lady at the front desk, rather than bother us at dinner, went to the room and walked our old dog! The Innkeeper even approached us at check out to give us her best wishes, as she had lost a dog to cancer as well. There is free port, sherry and snacks in the afternoon as well! Please visit this great place.
