Great staff & peaceful area.

There is no self catering. You have to book breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nearest centre for food is about one hour back. The road up to the end of R57 is extremely bad. Potholes, potholes and potholes, you literally have to dodge and play minesweeper with the potholes. You cannot go faster then 40km/hour. Beautiful lodge, you feel enveloped by the Mountains around you. Hiking on day 2 and 3, the main reason for visiting. This definitely ticks my bucket list.

Just a beautiful rustic place. I was here 30 years ago, and the place is still as unspoilt as then.

Food mmm delicious, nature that refresh the mind, atmosphere very good for repairing your own life plans. It so naturally.

Wonderful place! Highly recommended. Great walking, great food and you get the bragging rights that you've slept in the highest lodge in the country.

Witsieshoek Mountain lodge offers comfortable accommodation and friendly service. The Wi-Fi at the lodge is free. Although they offer a limited menu, everything we've eaten during our stay was well prepared and tasty. If you want to go on to one of the many walking trails in the area or just stay at the lodge and look at the magnificent mountains this is a great spot.

We had recently stayed @ witsieshoek lodge n absolutely loved the place. The staff were so friendly n cooperative and went out of their way to assist us. Special thanks to fifi @ reception n Tebogo, the porter. Loved the views, the rooms etc.

Spectacular views, amazing mountain walks and the iconic chain ladder climb to the top of the Drakensberg's Amphitheatre and the Tugela Falls. Not to mention the wonderful staff, excellent accommodation and really good food.

At witsieshoek mountain lodge you get every morning a breathtaking view with your breakfast, easy to get to the sentinal peak hike and they have some great mountainbike tracks.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and the staff is friendly. The food is priced just right. … My new favorite place.

Hot showers, warm beds and lots of heating, reasonably priced meals and interesting hikes close by.

The most beautiful hike ever! But it's really over priced. I paid R50 to enter, R80 to hike and R135 to get to the hike because the roads are bad. They also paving the entire hike to Tugela falls. This is ruining the natural feeling of the rugged mountain. Be prepared to be transported in a dilapidated5 car up a very steep, rocky road (for R135)

Very good, second time we stayed. Hospitality brilluant, staff friendly, accomodation comfy and clean. Will surely come again.

Stayed 2 nights to hike up the Amphitheatre. The gravel road to the hike was too rough for our hatchback luckily the lodge provided a 4x4 shuttle to the start of the hike. Buffet breakfast included with a few options for vegans/vegetarians. Stayed in the hikers cabin with warm duvets and clean self-catering kitchen. We washed the dishes even though they would have done it anyway. Beautiful views around the lodge.

We really loved Witsieshoek, the staff were all helpful, friendly and wanted to make our anniversary stay excellent… sadly, water and electricity became an issue out of their control and we had to leave ☹️ will definitely be back…

Firstly you pay R50 per person to visit the hotel. This is for the local communities or something. The road is well maintained and its a beautiful, scenic drive up the mountain. The restaunant is very old fashioned and looks like it has very little life left in it even though it was revamped a few years ago. Its clean but looks like something from an 80's movie on the inside. We ordered soup and toasted sandwiches for lunch — what a surprise, the soup and bread was heartily prepared. Well seasoned, full of taste with fresh bread, what more could we ask for on a chilly afternoon. The toasted sammie tasted like when I was a kid, loads of cheese and toasted nice an crispy. Their fries are to die for, real homemade.

Honestly loved this lodge so much. If you're one who's keen on getting away from the city, like hikes, like nature and ready for no cellphone service. Not forgetting peace and quiet. It's just one of the many amazing getaways that South Africa has to offer.

Very very pretty place to be. The only thing I would say is that this place isn't ideal for long stays as it is very very relaxed and peaceful but the activities are very limited. The actual hotel is lovely and consists of a few individual type units. The view is unbeatable as well.

This is awesome place to be in Free State. I love this mountain top and see all the best view. The place is breathtaking.

A mountain escape like no other. It's like living on top of the clouds. Bright and sunny at times, misty and chilly at others. If it's mountain walks and views you are after this is it. Breathtakingly beautiful!

An absolutely amazing place to stay. I loved it. The views all around are amazing. It's so peaceful and quiet. The rooms are pretty and clean. The food was absolutely amazing, the buffet is delicious and definitely worth it. I would go back just for the food… Very friendly staff and great service. Definitely my favorite place to stay ever!

Nice views and a good starting point for trekking but be aware the weather can be quite tricky. Quite good restaurant and helpful staff.

This lodge has got a very nice view from the drakensbur mountain and the rooms are very clean and the beds are very comfortable with heaters on the wall. Resturant and very delicious meals. I love this place the waiters are very friendly and ever smilling.

Spectacular views and a great base for hiking. Our room was clean, the bed was very comfortable and the shower was hot! From the outside the rooms look a little old fashioned and don’t sit comfortably in the environment — maybe a bit too geometric and not much use of natural materials — but I’m nit-picking. It’s well run, comfortable and the location is amazing.

Cosy and Comfortable… Great place to stop at if you want to hike the Sentinel or get to the high points of the Royal National Park.

Pretty basic accomodation. We stayed in the small 2 bed room. Perfect to stay in before you head up the drakensberg. Has a kitchen with stove, oven, kettle and fridge. Good base to use when hiking up the amphitheater.

The lodges are high up in the mountains of the Drakensberg giving you stunning views and crisp clean air. The lodges themselves are cozy and have heating for the cold nights.

Food was very good and very cheap. The room itself wasn't huge but the bed was very comfortable and the shower was very nice. The staff was very nice for the most part. Keep in mind that the only real hikes in the immediate area appeared to be Sentinal Summit via Chain Ladder/Gully, Amphitheater, and Crack/Nek/Maha Falls hikes. You'll need to pay a $15 transfer fee to have them drive you to the Sentinal Summit hike if you don't have a car with high clearance. Most of the hikes on their website were ones I didn't see on the hiking map they gave us at the front desk. Also note that the trails can be unclearly marked in areas! Overall, amazing scenery and hiking trails though. Also only 5 mins of free Wi-Fi per day that we could only get in the lodge.

Witsieshoek has a warm and friendly atmosphere, and caters to the hiking crowd and lovers of the Berg.

This community-owned lodge nestles spectacularly beneath The Sentinel literally 'at the end of the road'. Rooms — even in the hikers cabin — are great and clean, the beds very comfortable, the bathrooms modern and beautiful. Food was aplenty, delicious and there is a large selection — also in the small, cosy pub. The management went out of their way to support our groups' launch of @climbfork9 campaign, even providing complementary coffee at the Sentinel car park in the morning of 25 May! We could not have asked for better — thank you so much to Jan and the entire team!

Great view, good bed. All the rest is terribly disappointing. Overpriced, over-rated. Probably the worst place I've ever stayed. I wouldn't call it a hotel…

Always a good stop over. Must come back in the winter to experience some snow. Good hikes in the area. Bar is well stocked. Food and service was good.

Great view. Quiet. Food not great and a bit expensive, but edible. Right next to the hiking trail. Great place to stay if you want to do the Chain Ladder route to the top of the Tugella Falls.

We began our anniversary with such high hopes, little to mind that it soon would change. We traveled for hours to our destination. We were greeted with a R80.00 charge at the entrance to which we asked why we needed to pay as we were already paying R1500 for the night. Needless to say, the security shrugged his shoulders and couldn't tell us where the money was going. It was a misty rainy morning so our "hike" was put on hold, we in actual fact were quite happy to relax in the room under the covers watching a movie. Our room had no TV, we kindly went to reception and asked if there were perhaps another room that might have a tv. We were bluntly told that there are no Tvs and we can watch in the dining area (Where the staff were watching tv). We were rudely told that "This is a hikers accommodation". We completely understood that, and it was our intention to hike but nature held its course and we were confused as to why we were being treated so rudely when paying such a huge amount for the night in a tiny room. We then asked for our money back, to which the lady didn't say a word and just took money out the register and began a conversation with another gentleman in an African language. We could only pick up "tv" from the conversation so knew the conversation was about us. We left without our R700.00 deposit to which I think is pathetic. The service we received was awful and I will never recommend you to anyone.

Lodge in the Drakensberg. Ideal starting point for hikes. Rooms were clean. Here and there reparaturbedürfig but broadly OK. The food was delicious.

We have been coming to witsieshoek for over 15 years. It has always been "low cost, low quality" accommodation, but this time: they have clearly evolved. The rooms have had a modern re-do and you could be forgiven for assuming you're in a new, urban guest-house. Rooms now have simple but new and functional furniture, bath-rooms are completely new and feels like my bathroom at home, mattresses, bedding and carpets leave nothing to be desired. There's an in-room coffee-stat…ion, plenty power-points, wall-heaters and double-glazing to keep the warmth inside. Rooms are serviced daily. the restaurant and lounge areas have not been re-furbished, but the kitchen must have had a re-think. We had buffet breakfast and dinner (although there is an a-la-carte menu) and I found myself going for seconds (… and thirds). The food is simple, but home-cooked, fresh and well prepared. The salads and bread have a "just made" taste to them, and there is a freshly brewed pot of filter-coffee available 24/7 to all guests. the lounge has large leather couches and a TV and games for entertainment. The bar is well stocked with the winter regulars and I found nothing wanting. there were fireplaces in the lounge that were sadly not burning, but heaters nevertheless keep it at t-shirt temperature. staff are always around and service is prompt and straight-forward. lastly, the short drive up the bad dirt-road to the sentinel car-park is why we come here.
