Had a comfy stay and really enjoyed the suana and the T. V room awesum. Assistance GREAT GUYS!

Very clean throughout my stay at YHA, however the manager is a nutcase who is very intence I dont reccomend staying longer then 2 nights max. Cheap prices but bad vibes.

Cold! Seriously freezing. I had just tented in the Able Tasman and my sleeping experience there was comparable. I literally didn't shower because I didn't know if I could warm up with wet hair. The room heater was on a timer and shut off every 30min! Absurd. I had two blankets but was warmer in my tent with my sleeping bag. Internet was terrible. Continually disconnecting if you could get connected at all. Impossible to do anything and didn't reach the room at all. It was obvious that the staff was Woofing and took minimal interest in the patrons. I came down and asked the front desk about the sauna and the heater stating I was freezing. The sauna eventually worked after flipping the switch several times. Only stayed here one night. Good thing because had I had multiple nights booked I would have requested a refund and changed lodgings. Worst hostel experience I have had in New Zealand.

Close to downtown Neslon, this hostel offers good accomodations, perfect for a good night sleep, after a good hike at Abel Tasman National park.

We had stayed here for 4 days. It was fantastic. All the staff members are friendly and really helping. They have provided details about local shops and tourist spots. Different types of nice daily bred available in the kitchen. Good location with plenty of parking nearby. Competitively cheap.

Cheap dorm rooms and nice, clean common facilities. Competent and friendly staff as well.

All staff were super nice and friendly. The kitchen was clean and has everything we need! The location is convenient And close to everything!

The owner he is awesome. Only stay one night. Will be back again. Great staff. And Saturday market is just around the corner.

Central location, great hostel. The price-performance ratio is perfectly fine. There is free bread from Nelson in the morning and there is also free washing powder. The bathrooms are clean and tidy. The rooms are okay. In the room of 10, for example, there were no ladders for the bunk beds on some beds. There are 2 kitchens and a large dining area. There is also an outdoor area and a lounge. In the lounge there is a TV, books, armchairs, table football and a slightly older air-hockey table. In the morning, birdsong is played in the hostel and later music.

So great for the price! Clean, well stocked on the utensils for the kitchen, love that it has an oven, good security at front door (code changes often). Downsides would be lack of hooks in the dorm rooms, no mirrors and no bathmats for the showers… Otherwise I had a great stay! Staff are really nice, helpful too :) would highly recommend.

Downtown Nelson is pretty noisy during the day if you are unlucky enough to get a room facing the street. Rooms were clean. Beds are as uncomfortable as they come in hostels. Limited kitchen capacity, like every other hostel. Other than that you can't go wrong here.

Spacious and clean. Great location in the town centre, as with all larger hostels kitchen space and number of bathrooms is limited.

Convenient location, some staff were quite unfriendly and this is the first time I have come across unfriendly staff in NZ. Rooms were okay, slightly dated. Kitchen was quite clean and met our expectations of a backpackers hostel overall.

Decent hostel, close to a lot of great spots. Larger facilities with high ceilings. Small lockers in the rooms, only big enough for some things.

Location is really good, close to everything including bus station. Rooms were a good size and beds were comfy. Not many charging ports but you could cope. Wi-Fi didn't work in my room which was annoying. All staff that I spoke to were helpful and friendly. Facilities were also really good, their shower was the best I've had yet.

It was relatively well maintained and had a good sitting room the location is also good.

Good stuff: big and well equipped kitchen, friendly staff, free bread all day, boiling water tap, lots of showers and toilets, central location. Bad stuff: few hooks in showers, a bit coldish.

I stayed in 6 beds dorm, the room is big enough, there're sofa and coffee table inside. The shower/toilet is comunal (outside the room). Luckily it wasn't so full so there's no queue. The room is not well-heated, it was so cold during the night. The kitchen is big and there're free fresh bread everyday. There's baggage locker for $2. One of the reception staffs, a japanese lady was very kind and polite, unlike the other staffs.

As far as customer service, this place is being run to the ground by an atrocious manager with a complete lack of people skills or any sort of reasonable passion for what he does. No breakfast — just bread that you can slice yourself. Despite the decent amenities and fast Wi-Fi I won't come back — ever.

The WORST yha ever… The staff weren't welcoming n hospitable. One of staff keep asking us to move out aggressively. He said we need to hurry. Cuz the housekeeper is waiting for cleaning… and we just sit in the public area for eating our lunch n waiting for our bus. He came to us again. He said we can't stay here … plz choose another backpacker! This one won't ur best choice.

This is a real nice hostel. Pros: • Well equiped kitchens • plenty of space in the lounge • separate movie "theater" room • stainless steel basins and dry ledge in shower cubicle • separate reading lamp per bed in dorm Cons: • Only 1 ladder in room with 3 bunks • primary light didn't work in room • insufficient notices with regard to the locking mechanism of the room door We had some unfortunate events happen while staying there: 1) We received a parking ticket indirectly because of below. 2) Another woman in our dorm room had her wallet+travel papers stolen by a stranger who snuck into the hostel. By the time the office opened and the camera footage scanned, the perpetrator was gone. PS: The stranger was photographed by the CCTV cameras and his description was given to the police. IMHO The hostel staff was very supportive to every guest connected by the incident. Even after the theft and parking ticket, I would recommend anyone to stay here. Just follow my recommendations down below and you should be fine. Recommendations for the hostel owners: • Put notices on the inside of the door near the handle explaining the locking mechanism. • Add large notices at the entrance after office hours: "Be vigilant and never open the hostel doors for anyone who doesn't have a key/code". • Install doors that require cards to open (see YHA in Wellington) and doors that lock automatically.

The staff at this hostel were very rude and not welcoming or hospitable. We ended up moving to other hostels in the area and have had a great experience! I suggest you stay somewhere else cause Nelson is an awesome town but this place doesn't do it justice!

Worst YHA ever. We'd booked a 3 beds rooms and they gave us a 4 beds rooms saying that the price was the same. Hard mattress. Noise of the toilet flush earable through the wall. What a shame regarding to the standard of YHA which are usually pretty awesome.

The public place is great. Free breads, TV room and even a piano there. Love it!

Stayed here for one night in Feb. 2011. It was decent, but we were so tired when we got there that anywhere would have been nice. Fortunately we could only stay one night and found a better place for the next night (Accents on the Park).

We stayed here for two nights in November 2009 in a room on the first floor. Pros: very clean and functional common premises like kitchen, laundry et c. Very kind and helpful personnel. Cons: The room was cramped and smelled terribly. I do not understand the use of wall-to-wall carpets in places like this. No stowage in the room. A disappointment for a senior like myself.

The Nelson YHA is an exceptionally good hostel by world standards: comfortable beds, copious hot water for showers, convenient and well-stocked kitchens, pleasant and helpful staff and, best of all, a standard of cleanliness that is well above other NZ YHA's. Only one negative comment — the noisy game in the lounge was a source of annoyance to the majority of visitors of all ages who were either trying to read, talk or compose mail on the Internet.
