Checked in with my wife for a four day break to visit our son who was working in Malta for a year. We wanted a good value, budget hotel and cleanliness, value and location were our priorities. These priorities were most certainly met and exceeded. We arrived at approx. 22:00 hours and immediately encountered a problem — we understood that we had paid in advance while the hotel stated that we had just booked a room and had not paid. However I believe the manner in which a problem is dealt with tells much. In view of the late hour, the receptionist issued us with the keys and said the matter could be sorted out in the morning (it turned out that while the fee had been reserved on my credit card, it had not been taken by the hotel, while my credit card listed the reserved cash as a debit). We has a room on the 6th floor overlooking the bay. It had a small balcony with a wonderful view. The room was spotless and cleaned every day. The staff were very friendly and eager to help. Breakfast was served in a beautiful penthouse room with a magnificent view. The bus to Valletta stops across the road — Tip, if using the bus network buy a day pass. It costs just over double the cost of two single tickets and will give unlimited use for the day and evening. Yes, the lift is small and there is no bar or restaurant. However there are a number of restaurants and bars within a five minute walk, we can recommend the Plough and Anchor bar next door. This is a clean, friendly budget hotel that more than meets the expectations of those on a budget. We required an accessible base from which to tour Malta. The Carlton did this excellently. It was great value and I highly recommend it.
